No 2 voices have ever been so married and in unison. That sound is something exceptional. After 40 years the magic is very much there. They are simply musical geniuses.

Ode to Freedom is one of the most beautiful songs I've heard in a long, long time. This album simply grows on you each time you listen to it - The whimsical 'When you danced with me' immediately appealed to me on my first listen as did 'No Doubt about it', however, the ballads on this album are simply enchanting. I am loving this album!

You exactly say the right thing. These songs grow on you.
Some people listen just once and don't grasp the deepness and many layers of sounds and harmonies. Then they call the songs "thin" or "simple". Too bad, because they really miss a lot.

Björn and Benny are two geniuses of our time, I can hear these songs play in 50 years just as their old music plays today.
The ABBA story had a good ending after all😊

There is a song for everyone and every mood on this album. It is the return of ABBA at their best. The intricate harmonies of Agnetha and Frida are just sublime - nothing's changed in 40 years, absolutely brilliant. Congratulations ABBA!!

Thankfully Abba have always done their own thing nd not followed the pack, that's why their music lives on while lots of groups artists have disappeared

You reaction makes me so happy! I was an ABBA fan when I was in high school in the 1980s... so I was about the only ABBA fan that I knew and I drove my friends nuts. Most Americans thought ABBA was that throwaway disco group that did Dancing Queen. So getting to first see ABBA's music make a come back after the success of Mamma Mia was such a joy to me, and watching reaction videos from all around the world and people going "Damn they are good!" made me feel vindicated after all these years. And when I wastched the live announcement on 5 September, I was a mess... and now getting to see you react... so much joy. They will never know how much joy they have brought this 56 year old woman in the US... but they really have. I connect with your joy.
I feel like some of the songs are either continuations of stories or bookends... Don't Shut Me Down feels like the sequel ot One of Us (she left and then went back)... and Keep An Eye On Dan is a follow on to SOS.... I saw another interpretation of that one... it's apparently a mom dropping off her son with her ex for visitation, and the verses are how she really feels and the chorus is her stumbling thru talking to the ex to keep from crying.
ABBA has given the world a gift in a way only they could.

Great reactions. "I Can Be That Woman" could be a song about alcohol abuse. The woman is regretting having sunk so low, but hopes her relationship can survive. It is evident that things are so fragile because even the dog seems to know there is something wrong. Bumblebee is about our environment and whether we will have a world in the future like we have today, with all of the beautiful things..... like bumblebees. Dan is the woman's child, and she wonders if she still loves her ex. The pain of giving up her child to her ex tears her up inside, and she worries that her ex won't "keep an eye on Dan." ABBA has chosen topics that we never hear about in pop music today. They have the same great musicianship they have always had, and now have added profound and relevant simplicity to their lyrics. They are "truly "Now and then combined."

Great to see such enthusiasm for Abba in one so young! I was 14 when I fell in love with Agnetha in 1975! This album is so much better for us older fans because it’s been such a long wait, but the stand out track for me is I Can Be That Woman. Nobody does these sad story songs better than Agnetha. Bjorn has said that it is dedicated to Tammy Wynette (hence the dog’s name) and is about alcohol/drug abuse, and the desire to get clean. Bumblebee - no metaphors needed. It’s a straight out plea for the insects we need so much and are on the brink of wiping out. Try listening again with that in mind and not welling up!!

So glad and grateful for the younger generation that is discovering ABBA!
I find almost all of ABBA`s songs/lyrics are personal. Agnetha, Björn, Benny and Annifrid are all humble, nice, honest and decent human beings; down to earth people.
They are just like anybody else, with all of their flaws, traumas, embarrassments, difficulties etc. They know that, and they do not put themselves over anybody else. In addition, they are even generous with sharing those painful experiences with us, so that we have the opportunity to feel our own pain - and heal it. They also share their joy and happiness with us; all their precious feelings. That is why their music touches all of us, young as old and everyone in between. That makes their music so GREAT, and SPECIAL. I think. What do you think?
In addition, all about ABBA is natural. They could easily have artificially “fixed” the ladies “older” voices and other things, but they refrained from doing so. Their music it is genuine right through.
As far as I know, no other band is doing the same today; the temptation is too big to fix almost everything to perfection. ABBAs music is therefore REAL MUSIC. Today it is unusual, which makes them so BIG!

A little Trivia .. Did you know that they were once offered 1 Billion Dollars to perform a series of concerts basically 100 Million a show & they turned it down..
Because they felt that they would not be able to give the level of performance they demand of themselves & if they could not perform at that level they would not subject their fans to an inferior performance.
Times & technology have changed & while you can hear a bit of the years in their voices...
Not owing us anything they gifted us with an absolutely stunning album.
This album is the capstone to their careers & puts the seal on their truly being the greatest pop music group in history.

When I saw the track listing with Ode to Freedom as a title, I worried it'd be some arrogant celeb bombastic preachy thing, but if subverted that completely, saying no, we aren't going go preach, that if we did, our privilege would make us suspicious.

Hi Emily. This reaction video of yours is magnificent! Most reactions are slightly slanted with a "It should be this way" kind of thinking. Yours was pure reaction as it should be. Bravo to you! I am now a subscriber based on your reaction video. I think ABBA's "Voyage" album is a masterpiece & a special gift from ABBA to their loyal fans. I am a big fan of ABBA like you (If they release a CD of them coughing & sneezing...I'll buy it!!! My top ABBA song of all time is "Honey Honey". This song is so uplifting & motivational for me. Listen to it on headphones without distractions (Phone off, door locked, lights off, when everyone is sleeping). It has so much in it! I love how the orchestra seeps in & makes me feel like I'm flying on wings of melody! It pays homage to the oldies with the "oom bop bop bops, the call & response structure, after the chorus rev-up for the next verse, etc. I Abbasolutely love this song!!! One more thing. Your reaction video was pure reality. Keep all your reactions real like this one & I'm sure your success (& subscribers) will grow. Take care!

Bees are dying in huge numbers due to insecticides and with government action there is a real possibility that future generations will not hear them. This is ABBAs environmental contribution with a timely release.
One expects a song with the title "Ode to Freedom" to be a pretentious ode to freedom. Cleverly this is NOT. It is, as the title says, a song ABOUT an ode to freedom! Brilliant.

I think many of us get choked up when we hear them 40 years later because we were fans in the 70s and 80s. To hear them now is such a brave move! I tear up because I'm proud of them!!
One thing I've learned as I age (and heard from my then 89 year old nana years ago) is that I still feel as young on the inside as I ever have...it's just the outside doesn't match anymore!

Enjoyed your reactions. Although you had heard them before, I think it's a pity you didn't do the other three songs because they are all great and an integral part of the whole, if you understand what I mean. I've been so excited about this album since it came out. Such variety showcasing their wide scope, but all having a distinctive Abba sound. My favourite (like the majority from what I've read so far) is the brilliant emotional and danceable "Don't Shut Me Down" but honestly I love them all and as you said there are various back-stories and deeper meanings as well as the on the surface storytelling. There are songs for different occasions/ moods (such as Irish/Scottish Ceilidh: When You Danced With Me, Country Song: I Can Be That Woman, Christmas Day: Little Things, Feel good dance-along about starting a relationship: Just a Notion, Mature themes like the struggle of leaving your child with your ex or dealing with friction in relationships: Keep An Eye On Dan and No Doubt About It, Environmental: Bumblebee, and that final fantastic clever musical treat that isn't an Ode to Freedom! What an album! Brilliant first time you hear it and gets better with every play. 🙂

Great, youthful reaction and I had to chuckle a bit, about the young generation hearing big orchestration, immediately think about movie scores. Myself, being grown up with ABBA, when hearing "Ode to Freedom" right away remembered Verdi's "Hebrew slave choir" and Offenbach's Barcarole.
Benny is definitively more inspired by those classics.
With "I can be that woman", Agnetha delivered the most emotional and intimate performance of an ABBA-song since "The winner takes it all". She is and always was, a true, emotional and sincere storyteller with a fitting, gorgeous voice. She's a tear-maker.

Thanks for sharing. UA-cam channels have made it easy to find out how others like the album. I feel like I am listening with people all over the world. Loved it. I am so happy they got to do something that some bands like the Beatles never got to do. Such a gift to the fans. I am impressed. At the age of 75 they still have it. As a college professor I wonder how many of my students would give this a chance. It just makes me happy to hear their sound again. I listen to so many other diverse things but this brought me back to a sound that no one can do like they do. I didn’t read all comments but I am sure some said Bumblebee was about global warming (Frida has done some work here I understand). No Doubt is so fun. When We Danced is just plain cool. Ode is landmark. So much discussion could happen on this song alone. I was not surprised on another video it was voted 2nd on the album. Your expression after the first line says it all. Of course the early release magic 3 are epic. I can’t stop listening. Thanks for letting us be part of your experience.

I have connected with you and just a little reminder from listening to others reactions .. someone said that youtube blocks the channel if you dont stop two or three times with every song .. it´s a little frustrating not hearing the whole song but they have weird rules, maybe check it out and I look forward to your next reaction .. Greatings from Denmark

Emily....first of all...you are so cute. I just love your reaction to ABBA´s new album. I´m a Swede and I am soo proud of ABBA as a group and that they are Swedish. Just love that you, the younger generation appreciate their music. They have a way of touching your heart with the music and lyrics. I know that the US wasn´t their strongest market for them back in the day due to the fact that Agnetha had a scare of flying so they couldn´t perform so much in the US as they wanted. However, with this album they reached number 2 on the Billboard. Very Impressive! Btw The Dan song is about a custody battle. Maybe not a battle but it seems like both of them still love each other and are very concerned about their son Dan wich `get´s out of hand´.Much love to you and stay safe!♥

Apart from your musical taste, which I share when it comes to ABBA, your appearance in this video is so nice, spontaneous and cute, that this makes this video one of my favorites. Ik really like you and the way you show your enthousiasm and emotions. Keep up and never change that! Oh, about Don't Shut Me Down, I really love the hints to Dancing Queen in Benny's small piano parts in the transitions and key changes, and in the second chorus at 3.00 (wow!), the hint to the sad mood of The Day Before You Came in the first verse (the way Agnetha sings it) and the groove that makes me think of SOS... To me this song contains many aspects of a wide ABBA's repertoire! A masterpiece it is.

Emily, I think you capture ABBA's greatness in the first few seconds of your reaction to Ode to Freedom. It perhaps is not their best song, but your reaction is interesting.
Being Swedish, I wish you could talk to my girlfriends (not girlfriends) back in 70/80's when they pretended the end of the skipping ropes to be microphones, imagining themselves to be Agnetha and Frida.

Hi Emily! Greetings from Spain. I would love to be able to tell you all the emotions that this new ABBA album has brought to me, while I have been listening to it, since it is true that with each new listening it grows within you ... until it blossoms. And I want to do it because you’ve impressed me, you are so natural, fresh, cute and emotional... but I don't have time or space here 😅. At least you have a new subscriber in me! Now I'm looking forward to seeing your reactions to Voyage's first three released songs. Keep it up!
Ps. Oops…! You didn’t make any reaction video on the first new ABBA songs… 🤦🏻‍♂️ Well, now I see that this is your first ever reaction video 😅… I suggest you to do many more! And not only ABBA… music from the 70’s perhaps? The hippy and psychedelic era? Which other musicians do you like…? I am very curious about (I am a music lover…).

My favourites are I Still Have Faith in You, Don't Shut Me Down, and No Doubt About It. I also just bought the album Ring Ring - it's new to me. And I've created a huge playlist of lots of their lesser known material such as Tiger, Happy Hawaii, The King Has Lost His Crown, Eagle, One Man One Woman, I'm a Marionette etc. ABBA is exploding - not least in my mind. lol. Fabulous!

Now that a few months have passed since your reaction, I'd love to know what your thoughts are on the album now, after several listens. There isn't an ABBA song I don't like, but there are some on this Voyage album I didn't love the first or even 20th time of listening, but have since grown to become songs I do now love (No Doubt about It was instant, I Can Be that Woman and Bumblebee took a while)

Great reactions to the songs. You rightly noticed that at the end of "Keep An Eye On Dan" there was a piano from "SOS". It's like two stories linked together.
    P. S. Your friend is probably one of the crazy ones :)
Play her song "Head over Heels" :)

*No Doubt About It* is a rearramgement of this older song that was considered at the time a simple throw away song that at the time no one really thought much of ..
*Bumble Bee* if you take it at face value is a gentle plea to protect all smaller forms of life & without the bees we're pretty much doomed.
*Keep An Eye On Dan* is dealing with coparenting
*I Can Be That Woman* definitely dealing with addiction & the fallout from it in a relationship
    Easter Eggs.....
Did you catch the small keyboard run of SOS at the end of Keep an Eye on Dan??
And The Fernando Pipes on Bumble Bee??

"No Doubt About It" is a brand new song. "Just A Notion" is the from a 1978 demo that wasn't finished. They kept the original vocals and added a new backing track with guitars, horns and Benny's amazing piano wizardry. It's pure joy.

I'm not a sappy kinda guy, but "I can be that woman", kinda made me almost unhappy. The sadness, no.. grief... over a 2 year old break-up came back to haunt me. Anybody who has been through a breakup knows how it feels. When first, you're so in love that it feels like you've met your soulmate, the person you've been waiting for all you life, perfect for you in every single way... and then to have it all fall apart. All you wanna do is to go back in time. You see things spiraling towards the inevitable end, and you just don't want it to happen. You fight it way too long, and along the way there is only pain.
You can really see how their songs progress, as if the album is their life. The fall in love, have children, break up, deal with the aftermath, share custody of the children... all those mundane things that are about a million miles away from the glits & glam of "Dancing Queen" "Money money money". etc.
The only error I see with this album, and it's a pretty severe one... is that "Don't Shut Me Down" should have been the last song on there. Because it's about her, now several years later coming back to him. They've both grown as people, and now she is back asking if they can get back together. I know that song is also about them as a group, and how they're asking the listener not to judge them or compare them to what they used to be, and see them for who they are now. But the other songs on the album but "Don't Shut Me Down" in an entirely new context, and it should have been the last song. Because... I wouldn have wanted that happy end.

Agnetha is the lead on “I Can Be That Woman” 😊 Björn stated that it’s about a woman who’s battled an addiction, not necessarily tea/beef between them 😬
“Keep An Eye On Dan” is about a woman sharing custody with her child, Dan :) The ending of KAEOD is part of the SOS melody 😬
Overall I really enjoyed this album! Agnetha and Anni-frid’s voices aged beautifully, while Benny and Björn’s music composition has stayed the same (in a good way!)

No it doesnt break any new ground! Wasnt suppose to. You either like the sound of the band or you dont. I personally was blown away by how wonderful the musical arrangements were on many of the songs and how wonderful a couple of 70 plus year old women can still sound together.

I'm not quite sure why people keep referring to "When you Danced with Me" as a "sea shanty." Sea shanties are usually rather dour affairs designed to keep seaman in unison when hefting sails or rigging. This is a joyous folk dance song. It's even in the lyrics. Village Fair, music and dancing. Which is something they still do en masse in Sweden, especially during the long summer nights.
