1. DOKAN VILLAGE
ADDRESS: Dokan Village, Merek District, Karo Regency, North Sumatra, Indonesia
🇮🇩BABI PANGGANG KARO / BPK (KARO-STYLE ROASTED PORK) + PIG BLOOD SAMBAL: Mix pork with a pinch of salt and lime. Roast pork on firewood. Make pig blood sambal from salt, ginger, Sichuan pepper, forest eggplant, lime leaves, torch ginger, garlic, green chili, lemongrass, and pig blood. Stir constantly for 5 minutes. Dip pork in pig blood sambal to serve.
🇮🇩CIBET (DRAGONFLY LARVAE): Mix dragonfly larvae with forest eggplant, coconut, candlenuts, turmeric, Sichuan peppers, garlic, lime leaves, chili, and torch/aromatic ginger. Pour mixture into the bamboo tube. Add coconut milk to the bamboo tube, then seal the tube with ground lemongrass. Grill bamboo tube on firewood.
🇮🇩GRASS FROM COW STOMACH: Feed cow with klorofil grass for four days. On day 5, slaughter cow and separate the first chamber (stomach) Clean up bones and innards. Squeeze grass in the first chamber to extract “juice” into a bucket. Boil the juice for 1 hour. Add bones, then wait for 10 minutes. Add meat, then wait for 10 minutes. Gradually add cassava leaves, tree bark, candlenuts, forest eggplant, ginger, torch ginger, lemongrass, and green chilies. Add spices. Let boil for another 30 minutes - 01 hour, then add coconut milk.
🇮🇩TASAK TELU (CHICKEN BLOOD DISH): Boil cassava leaves, then chop. Slaughter chicken and then drain blood into a bowl. Clean the chicken, then boil the meat. Once the chicken is boiled, shred the meat, then mix with coconut and chopped cassava leaves. | Blood sauce: Same as pig blood sambal, only pig blood is replaced with a mixture of chicken and pig blood. Serve shredded chicken mixture mixed directly with blood sauce mixture.
🇮🇩LEMANG LEMANG (BEEF STEW WITH COCONUT MILK). Grind ingredients including garlic, onions, candlenuts, ginger, turmeric, chili, and coriander to make spices mixture. Add cooking oil to wok. Fry the ground spices, then add beef. After 30 minutes, add coconut milk and cook for another 30 minutes.

Hey, I’m Sonny! I’m from the US but I’ve been living in Asia for 10 years and started making food and travel videos to document my experiences. I travel to different parts of the world, hunting down and documenting the most unique food each country has to offer.
If you see any factual food errors in my videos, please feel free to politely let me know in the comments. I'm a huge fan of trying different, interesting foods in each country. My show is from a Western point of view, but more importantly, MY point of view. It is not meant to offend any person or culture.

His vibes were just laid back and chill.
Willie is the MVP of this Indonesian Series. Amazing vibes and really get along with Sonny. Hope you can collaborate with him again in the next Indonesian series.
Sonny. I'm an Indonesian. After the Papua series that you did back then, I tought "okay, this is it the last indonesian strange food series from BEFRS". And now you got this video. Amazing. Respect for you and your whole team
@Baise Duezcke I'm going to tell you, this food, is..very uncommon, i never once eat this, so does all my family and all my friends, i actually don't know anyone who has ever eat the dish.
I'm just an average indonesian and I swear I never heard about this cuisine before.

I edited this to say his IG link is in description
I LOVE how Sonny isn't afraid to try anything once and even if he doesn't like it, he's so respectful to the people that are sharing the food with him. That is just one reason why I love this channel so much! Not only does Sonny show us different foods from all around the world, but he also shows us different cultures and the BEAUTIFUL people who make up part of this world. 🖤🖤🖤
The most important part is that it's genuine respect. If this were Mark Wiens you just know he'd be rolling his head and tilting it doing his "MMMM" like always because he doesn't want to offend them. They could serve him plain boiled rice and he'll do the same thing.
I’m very open minded to eating different things in the world but the things that Sonny dares to eat is at ANOTHER level! I’m sure his Vietnamese cameramen and producer pack their own “lunches” when they go to some of these remote places as they can be out there for days at a time!

Indonesian here, i myself is not a karonese but im from a very related tribe to karo. I always hear about karo using blood and strange stuff to their food but my tribe is a muslim tribe and adjusted these foods to make it halal and often these adjustments just makes the food unique for itself. Really great video btw im an javanese alasnese just north from north sumatra in south east aceh you can try our food if you are interested!
I was just in Kutacane - Blankejeren a week ago. First time trying Manuk Labakh, Jurong Bakar, and Pacik Gule. The first two are decent but nothing special, the Pacik Gule tho...Wow!! I've tried so many different types of fish gule in my life, the best one is between Kutacane n Blankejeren. Even better than the best Arsik in Toba, just slightly.
@Cracxy yep, one of my favorite food is called tasak telu in karo it is chicken mixed with chicken blood and spices while here we interpret the name tasak telu meaning cook three and still use the chicken but also replace the blood with 3 special ingredients they are onion, green chili, and lemongrass. Both have the same name but almost completely different
@@wenderis hehe glad to here someone loving our food
@Cracxy if you are in Indonesia, and in Muslim majority area, than most food are halal. Unless they specifically mention Babi/b2 (pig), snake, etc. Some restaurants put the animal pictures on their stall. Also, franchises have halal certificate logo.
If you're in majority non Muslim area, it's the other way around. Muslim food/restaurant usually have halal logo, or there's Arabic writing like "assalamualaikum" in front of their house/warungs (the latter usually found in villages). But don't worry, just ask people.
Even if you're in remote places and non Muslim area, if you ask nicely people usually direct you to halal restaurants or just give you veggies...
@Cracxy you don't have to be so vigilant. Everything is clearly said in indonesia, large majority of restaurant are halal and will proudly display their halal certificate so you'll know. If it's not halal, or contain pig etc they will also put that information very clearly. Usually anyways
Karo culture is the best, I'm proud to be born here

Haha, so glad to see familiar food in Sonny's channel, those pepper that they commonly used are called Andaliman cornpepper (Zanthoxylum acanthopodium), they're very similar to Sichuan's (,Zanthoxylum piperitum) but not exactly the same.
