Lovely thought provoking video May, I’ve found that people this summer seem to have a very short fuse, lack of patience and consideration to others. Shame they haven’t seen your video 🙏🏽🙏🏽💚💚
In 1968 I attended the Moncton Comb School for year. I'm an American. The boat house for the rowing teams is the Avon river on the East side of the Dundas Aqueduct which spans the river. The aqueduct is part of the Kennet and Avon Canal. The canal in those days was in disrepair. My mates and I would walk along the tow path and dip into the shrubbery for a smoke. On the South side of the aqueduct at the bend in the canal was the work shop of Terry Page who made racing shells. A few years ago I discovered that Prunella Scales (Faulty Towers) and her husband had a long boat and did a a series called Great Canal Journeys. One episode was on the restored Kennet and Avon Canal. I just started watching your videos and they remind of the peaceful walks in my school days. When the mechanic finally fixes your transmission watch him carefully so next time you can fix it. Happy canalling.
The gearbox will be fine, just replace the oil every now and then. Having a boat is of continous work - every know and then. More boat, more stess, from experience. "Which is OK, I can still go forward", the best attitude to boating. 😁
@@wellbeingonwater Some might be OK as normal wear and tear, the question is the quantity. When you drain the oil after some hours of operation 20-50, then you can guess better (you can reuse/refill that oil). Would replace it for you, I am bit far off with roughly 2k kms.
It looked hard work stopping the boat without reverse. I’m pleased you managed to sort it out without expense! Great to see lovely George again. A really thought provoking vlog thank you May. xxxx
Good advice, not judging others. It's refreshing to see you (sort of) get your hackels up about the lock, but then face your own "Uh Oh" moment re: not having a place to tie up. Thank you for posting this, we can all use a reminder that everyone is going through something - and likely those challenges will remain unseen.
Omg May, You made that look so easy, I’ve just completed my solo handling of going through locks, it’s so hard anyway, you made it look so easy, good job your so fit and fearless 😅
12:47 cable throttle, glad you got it fixed. You are totally right about showing compassion when you come upon something that feels like a simple goof-up. That's a lot to fo before you go to work

Talk about making work hard for yourself with reversing the boat through a simple oversight but easily done hehe, I hope you can get your gearbox sorted out soon though may for your own peace of mind, you seem very loving towards your friends whenever I see you with them on your videos which is a nice thing to see as long as they don't take advantage of your loving nature. Keep safe and have a great week hun xx
Welcome back George and May you did wonderfully well with the lock and overflow stream the canal has a funny way of bringing out the happiest in people. (Even if that's little things stopping gear linkage cables moving)
May, I just watched an older video where you were splitting wood. You might want to look at getting a Froe. The tool has a heavy blade, 12" or so with a handle at 90 degrees. You place the blade on the wood, hold it all with the handle then hit the back of the blade to split the wood. Froes were used to split out shingles for house siding & roofs. Safer and more controlled.
Still loving your videos, its always interesting to see your adventures. I have to admit you help to encourage me to finally buy an air fryer (15-1) so have been baking bread and making meals in it, so massive thank you
You could have the bollards at the side of the lock. You will get there. Also always keep a rope with you on the bank, once had a gust of wind and I had to get into the water to get to the boat. 😅
I'm sure the same etiquette applies to lock gates as farmer's gates - close them behind you. As you pointed out though there may be a very valid reason for it. I imagine opening and closing is not as easy you make it look. You truly put life in perspective with your thoughts and advice. I chill out every time I watch on of your videos. Don't try that on wet grass or you're likely to end up sitting in it. It's a gear lever sweetie.
Hey! Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts. Yes it does indeed, it's always good practice to close the gate behind you but sometimes it can't be done!

Hi May, Your channel is great and an absolute asset to UA-cam. I haven't seen such beautiful and relaxing videos on UA-cam for a long time. I've been following you for about a week now and except for your yoga videos I've seen all the others. Personally, I don't know anything like that from the canal boats.
