COST OF LIVING on a NARROWBOAT Winter 2022

- By the end of this video you will know the rise of costs from 2021 to 2022 living on a narrowboat.
Hey, I'm May and I live solo aboard my canal boat. With the cost of living rising you may be looking at alternative lifestyles, like tiny home life!
Please note: Every boater and boat are different. We all have different needs and wants. This video is an example of one boater and her way of life.

Remember you have to move on every 2 weeks if on a canal without a private mooring . A marina costs a fortune every month . Lots of other costs and realities as well . Carrying shopping on board in pouring rain on a canal side turned to pure mud by mountain bikers using the paths . Also getting used to living in a smartie tube doesn't suit everyone . If you have a job you cant move far and parking is a problem unless in a marina . Gave it a go for 2 years but a lot of things that are not mentioned that change the image of the life style . Good luck to those who try it hope you succeed .
Thanks for your thoughts 😃me love it!
Yes this additional info was missed in the video about mooring, which as you say can be a big ticket spend every months.
Thanks for your input. It's honest and interesting 👍
This is May’s costs. She’s constant cruising so no regular mooring costs. Everyone’s core costs differ, even the licence cost varies as it’s based on length and whether you’re permanently moored or constant cruising. The cost of living life the way you want? Priceless.
She is continuous cruise so no mooring fees in theory, but it could be drudgery in winter and isolating.
I don't see that dog walking would pay these costs, but if in London anything is possible and there are excellent transport links not found anywhere else
hi may loved the video good luck for this winter take care
Love how you ve put the video together , made it fun to watch along with the informative information. I am sure this would be of benefit to anyone considering this way of life , look forward to the next ……. Very honest too, like it !
Thank you Clare, next one coming on Sunday

Very Informative May, thank you!
Youre welcome
Really informative May, love hearing about your life. Thank you!! ☺
Hey Oliver, thanks so much. Super nice of you to say 😃
Terrific video May....love anything about canal life... you are really smart I have to say......Go girl.....!!
Thanks Phil 😁
I love this May! I can tell it’s a lot of work, but so worth it to live in nature - I need to come see it 🥰
Please do!
Just found your channel, so far so good.
I've been 18 years on board now. This winter is 1st time I'm genuinely concerned about costs. They're coming for all of us.
Were all in this together Phil! Hold tight we got this!
Hey Phil, just being nosey, it is a path I might like to take, I have seen videos by May. In her costs she ignores insurance, she believes she is insured by a one off, this cannot be true. Do you pay an annual premium, if so can you advise her. To me it is scary that a small mistake could lose her everything.
@@nicolagraham1678 Have a think on that Nicola.
Have a nice day.
Who's coming for us ?how exciting?
@terrywillett7208 your not being rude just realistic.
Thanks for the really good insight may, something for me to consider in my quest to sell my home and edge towards a narrow boat lifestyle 😀
Yeeeeeeah baby! Amazing. Glad to be a help toward that 😁
Great job. Very informative. Thank You!
Glad it was helpful!
Wow you did your maths girl! Nice to see this broken down. I love that it calls you to be more creative with your work and with your hands!
Thanks Von, my hands are starting to show the experiences on them! In beautiful way
Really good informative video. Many boaters don't go into so much detail. Nice one May.
Glad you enjoyed it
Very informative, thanks, my wife and I are considering the lifestyle
Go for it! You won't regret it
Gorgeous morning! Love the photos/videos. My gosh you are smart about costs and options for heat and other power. Yes, she was "born". :-) A wood boat is born for sure since the wood is/was living. Best explanation of "chine" I've ever heard. Oh, engine maintenance is absolutely necessary. I'm a retired diesel/gas engine mechanic boat/car/truck. The cost of a breakdown is way more than the cost of preventive maintenance. Good on you! I hope everyone listens to you. I sewed up covers for my caravan roof, and the two largest windows, still allowing two other windows to let light in, and still allowing access to my door. Yes, thermals, red caps, two showers a week, etc. 🙂 Life is grand.
Brilliant. Very interesting to be honest. Just found your channel as UA-cam advertised it on me screen. Subscribed. Best wishes
Great! So happy to hear you found this interesting. Yay go youtube! I guess costs and stuff is trending at the moment 👍
Hi May, that must be the most informative breakdown of costs that I have seen thank you. I.really can't wait to get my house sold and get out there too, thanks again, Brian.
You're welcome Brian! Glad it was useful for ya!
What a great informative video, im buying my first boat this week.. Cant wait to get into my new life.
Wow best of luck! you wont regret it!
Thanks for the video - very useful!
You're welcome, i'm glad you found it useful
I'm hoping to buy a boat next year so thank you for this!

Great video, thanks for helping me with my decision 👍
Ooo so glad I could help! 😄
Highly informative and educational .

Very educational. Good luck!

Go single handed girl!!! You make it look easy ❤️
Its not haha!
Hi May just found you on UA-cam and subscribed. I enjoyed hearing the info you gave us. Thx 🙏🌸
Hey Katelyn, thanks so much. Glad to have you aboard 😃
sounds amazing thank you may i would love this i dont mind the cold
Glad you like it! It's not as cold as people think!
@@wellbeingonwater that is awesome i see them in london all the time i keep thinking maybe one day i can join you all if i can find the money for one
Hey, I love what you are doing and i am inspired to take the plunge into narrow boating, it would be a complete change of life and scary entering the unknown. I guess fining the right boat is key.
Hey Mick! Yes. I suggest having a want and need list. You'll never find the perfect boat unless you build it yourself! Best of luck to you 😃
And a job to pay for it
£2000 pa for maintenance is not unusual. So while you will be warmer and use less electric, that his partly because you are in a tiny home made of steel not bricks and mortar
New sub here. I’m considering narrow boat life in the future because I’m looking for an alternative lifestyle. I’m looking forward to binge watching your videos for research 😊
Welcome aboard! Lovely to have you here ! I hope you find what you’re searching for
Thanks for the video. I enjoyed it.

Fantastic work , my dream has always been to live on a narrow. Enjoy your adventure ✨️
Hey Mark! I hope one day you make that dream come true! All the best
Perfectly done! keep on :)
Thank you! Will do!
Fantastic info thank you x

Thanks for the video, very informative. 👍👍
Excellent, so glad it was helpful! Thanks for your comment 😁
The temptation is real!!!!!!
I feel ya!
Love your vids may.. Cnt wait to buy one too.. Currently shopping 😁
So glad you like them! Happy shopping!
I spent 4 months at my mate and his wife who had a waterside lodge in zooch in Nottinghamshire and all the narrowboat people were happy and smiling living the dream I would so consider the life keep up the channell its amazing
Hey Ryan, thanks so much 😄 yes we are a happy bunch!
I always like your vids, im uming and aring about getting back on the water, 25 years ago when there were less boaters, free seasoned wood was easy to find, coal and gas were cheap, moorings were a fraction of current costs, we didnt have mob phones, tablets, tv or internet, it was great! The costs you shared show a huge, dramatic even, increase! As someone considering retiring onto the canal system its a worry, but do-able. For us oldies a marina is a better option, if you fancied a project to compare marina costs across the country i would love to see that vid! I also support Sea Shepherd btw been a diver most of my life. I wish you well May ❤
Hey Chris, thanks for this great comment. It's so interesting to hear your perspective on things having changed so dramatically. Great idea for a video thank you! I hope you do decide to come back to the water!
Just found your channel - enjoyed this vlog was very informative. Have subscribed.
Thanks Wendy! I'll see you next time 😊
Nice to hear you say the crt is the same as council tax. It's so nice to hear how you manage. You take care stay safe. Blessings to you XXX
I'm glad you think so Karen, boaters pay their way too! Sending you lots of love xx
Really informative, thankyou.
You're welcome! Glad you found it useful 😃
Really interesting watch!
Glad you think so!
Love the fact you have a arga not many have them
Met a lad recently with one too! Felt like we were part of a cool club
Thanks for your sharing 😊
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for this interesting video - I really enjoyed it :)
Glad you enjoyed it! 😄
I lived and worked a few years in the Thames valley and I did not think of living on a narrowboat at the time. I'll come back to the UK one day and catch up with that.
Hey Marco! Yeah you should, NB life is sweet but also hard work!
This is something that's always appealed to me, especially in the summer months. I could imagine some winter scenery from the canals would be fantastic too though. UA-cam algorithms did good this time 👍👍
It's beautiful in winter, when all the smoke is billowing out of people's chimneys and there's frost - epic! Thanks for your comment 🙏
@@wellbeingonwater the one thing i liked about winter was my french ceramic wood burner would heat the boat up toasty
Found this really interesting, thanks for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for commenting 😊
…and happy new year 🎉
Same to you 😁
Good luck with everything. Enjoy
Thanks Mike 😄
top lady, full respect. I am to old now but I miss the life
Thank you 😄 maybe you could do it for a nice long weekend sometime?
Hi May, nice to meet you. I've just jumped on board and am loving your vids. Very interesting and informative. Thanks!
Ps an Aga is very different from a raeburn even though it's the same company. Aga is fed from the top via a 3 inch hole so logs won't fit
Cheers from Cornwall, May.
Thanks Paul 😀
Hi, I’m about to start looking for my own narrowboat to live aboard, thanks for all the useful information! It seems the nearer the day comes to my own life on the canals, I keep finding new amazing youtube channels to follow…yours included 😌🙏
aww so sweet thanks 😁 i'm excited for you!
Very informative May 👍
Im glad you think so
What a great vlog, really enjoyed it. Subscribed and liked. Thanks for sharing 👍
Thanks Steve! Loads more videos in the pipeline! Your feedback is always welcome 😃
@@wellbeingonwater you’ll have to do a tour of your boat. Must admit I prefer the older boats they are more quirky, maybe more work but that’s fine. Anyway you take care 👍
@@steveparkes1266 💯!!!
Regarding Internet..... I purchased a very expensive Wi-Fi aerial and a router with SIM..
Turned out to be a waste of money you don't need them ..my phone acting as a Wi-Fi hotspot works better than the router and the aerial.... you have to pick your spots you can't expect to have Wi-Fi everywhere you go... it depends which window you put it in as well the left hand side of the boat can be better than the right on side of the boat....
Coal prices are absolutely stupid this year I've just managed to buy 8 bagsx20kg for £100
which was a 40 pounds saving which I would have been charged if I went to the Marina near where I was stopping. luckily a fellow boater told me about this place which was only a mile away.... FY I summer of 2001 the same coal was £8 per bag..
It would be worth learning how to do your own engine service the labour charges at some of these marinas is a complete rip off....
Buy spare parts when you can for instance I have just bought 4 injectors for a very reasonable price just in case I need them things are only gonna get more expensive...
When it comes to blacking do it yourself if you can paint a wall you can paint a boat....
For all you new boaters don't get ripped off...... I learn my lesson very quickly...
Great info Kev, thanks 😀
Great video! Lovely lady too 😍 I have future plans so am surfing for ideas etc. I have subscribed so keep up the amazing vids 🙌🏻
Hey! Thanks for following 😄
I've been mulling this over since a visit to Diglis Dock many, many years ago. I've watched loads of videos on the subject of narrowboat life and should really have taken the plunge by now.
One omission I noticed by May is insurance premiums and levels of cover. That's important in case anything out of your control happens.
Having said that, thank you May, your presentation here is a good aspect show of narrowboat living. Merry Christmas to you, and all boaters out there.
Thanks so much for your comment! Yeah things are rising and there's never a right time. Just gotta take the leap and trust all will be well
I started off with a premium of £12 75 pcm but it's now £25.
Reflects increase in value plus the way Craftinsure deal with personal property. I did not spend long on deciding so there may be better deal
I had a claim due to accident which did not help. There was no hassle but I'd a small upgrade so that was really maintenance.
Thank you! loooking to buy a narrow boat in 2023
Best of luck!!
Would you say this is still quote relevant and how likely is it to change in the next 5 years
Pause the video at 19/20 seconds in . . . . . . does that not take your breath away. lovely video May, well thought out and presented.
Beaut sky !
And thank you for your comment 😃
Well May, you have made my mind up I'm going to sell up next year and follow my dream and I'm buying a boat .I've been thinking of this for the last ten years I could ask you so many questions about boat life would probably make your head spin ..,stay safe Nick 🏴 x
This is fantastic Nick! So happy to have helped you make your mind up! Amazing 😃
@@wellbeingonwater I hope I see you on the cut,and if you are coming any where near Wales let me know ,and lunch or dinner is on me 🏴
Very honest appraisal - its not "cheap" as such, more of a lifestyle choice I guess and, as you say, a little less secure than a house....... but houses have their issues too and often far more expensive to fix than a boat.
Right on the money. Its definitely not cheap!!
Just come across your channel loved the content I have sub looking forward to watching your other videos.👍
Thank you 😄😄
Nice video May, very refreshing and honest approach 😊
Just subscribed 👍🏻
Cheers Neil
So glad to hear! I was wondering whether i'm being too honest! 😂 Thanks for subscribing
@@wellbeingonwater stay with the honesty May and avoid the BS. In the long run people will like you more and have greater respect for you.
I found that with my little engineering channel. Subs dont come as quick but they stay with you. I dont have a boat at the moment but planning on it. My garden backs onto the Mon & Brec canal. It's not navigable at the moment where I am but I will get wet in the future 😊😊
Keep up the good work!
Cheers Neil
Two showers pw!? Brave statement right there.
tbh i was going too buy a boat , but i found all the overheads too much , and plumped for a campervan its not the same but running on a very tight budget , great info btw
Cheers dave!
great vid . . thank you
Glad you enjoyed it
What a cool and inspiring way to live. Best regards
Thanks Tim 😄
@@wellbeingonwater if you ever need a travle partner let me Know:)
Thanks for the info ;)
You're most welcome 😀
New subscriber enjoyed the video and your presenting style .
Thanks Paul
I have thought about doing this for so long, I know I wont do it.. This is not a negative, just a reality. What watching this has done has just helped remind me how expensive boating can be. I hope to find my end house at the sea and have a little tender boat, to sail/motor, or sit reading in it. I completely appreciate why you do it and love following you.
Thanks Jonah!
Than you lovely May @@wellbeingonwater
Delightful and informative thank you. And I have taken away notes. Lots of notes. Notes on Post-its, notes in a moles skin notepad, notes reserved for that special, all be it limited space in my brain ;) Oh and Subbed.
haha! I also live off notes. Notes on the phone, notes in multiple books! I even have a note in my car to remind me to turn off my lights! Thanks for the sub! 🙏
It's interesting that you have the same diesel tax differences as we do here in the US. Lower tax for utility and agricultural use.
Glad you found it interesting
You go girl 👏
Love your enthusiasm thank you 😄
@@wellbeingonwater you are welcome 😊
Love the life your Living May ,really appeals to me ,Any spare rooms 😉☺️
Haha sorry, its a one woman boat 😄
😂😂😂👌🏻
Your boat is 3 years younger than me... which just goes to show that the 40's are not that bad. We need a bit more maintenance, is all. 🙂
Thank you for making these videos, at the moment I can't buy myself a boat and try that lifestyle, but I will - hopefully within the next 5 to 10 years (if all the canals haven't evaporated by then). So, you and a bunch of other narrowboat-tubers are serving as my surrogates for the time being. 😁
Greetings from Switzerland!
Haha hey Christian, totally the 40s are great! Do you have leaks too?! Exciting, we're looking forward to you officially joining the community 😄
I've honestly wanted to know the cost for ages. Thank you
Happy to help! 😄
FYI, we spent $6,000 on varnishing our log house, bought a new washer and dryer and dish washer this year so houses are no bed of roses either.
Wow log house!
@@wellbeingonwater Yep. Needs constant oil/varnishing
House maintenance can be expensive when the boiler goes for example, still needs painting council tax is a lot more expensive than a licence so expenditures just different types
100%
What a great way to live in harmony with Nature. You’re an inspiration.
Thank you 😊😊
That was great thanks. Not so cheap..
Glad you enjoyed 😄
That's a great life and a beautiful lady x
Thank you Ian 😄
Brilliant 👏
Thank you
Same as a house: the cost ranges from fek all ,to the GDP of a small country dependent upon who you are, and your boat. But a good informative video nonetheless. My heating costs are £11 a month at 0 degrees C ambient temp, and still I wake up covered in sweat. However, my cooling costs can be big at anything above this...
Thanks for your comment 😄
Red diesel is taxed but at a slightly reduced rate
When you live on a narrow boat you might as well put a slot in the top of it for the constant maintenance. Plus dont forget the boat safely certificate every couple of years . Your canal licence fees all the things like batteries that need changing every so often to including your leisure batteries. Inverters always break down so get a much bigger one than you actually need because anything less than 2500watt ones burn out like no tomorrow. Sump pumps bilge pumps . Water pumps always break down no matter what make . The electrics need an annual going over to stay on top of any electrical problems. Keep your engine well serviced to. Make sure you grease up and wad the prop shaft .important after every single time you move the boat. As they always let in water. Once every few months clean out the water tank. Make sure you paint and treat all the wood in your boat . To stop it rotting. Because boats rot from the inside out. It's a lot of work but a fantastic way to live.
Wow loads of advice there! Thanks for taking the tme to write it out! Have a great Christmas 😄
I live on a narrowboat mid 70's early 80's i love it meet the wife now live cornwall. But i looking for a other boat.
Amazing! Cornwall is lovely but no canals! Good luck finding your boat 😊
Love it.
Thank you 😃
local boaters here have access to showers from the canal people I think its included in mooring cost
Fancy!
Thanks that was so useful. Barb
Yay I'm glad you found it useful 😀
