Yesterday, for some unknown reason, the algorithm brought up your “Solo Summer Cruise” vlog. So glad it did.
The first time we heard about narrow boats was on the Inspector Morse/Lewis/Endeavour shows. Of course, the shows dealt with bodies being discovered caught in a lock, in the reeds, floating face down, or narrow boats set on fire to get rid of someone. But, they did show the locks in operation, albeit very briefly. It looked like a neat way to live a relaxing style of life (except, of course, in Oxford!).
Today, my wife wondered what your boat looked like below, and, lo and behold, this video popped up. We’re greatly enjoying your videos and have subscribed.

DIY picture frame video in the future, perhaps? Very easy little winter project. Get yourself to a little DIY shop, they should have some wood strips that would be a perfect width. I'm sure B&Q do them too. A piece of hardboard and a little hacksaw, stanley knife and steel rule - dont cut your fingers off! Measure your pictures, apply those measurements to the centre of the wood strip, cut at a 45 degree angle, cut the hardboard to the picture measurements plus half of the width of the wood strip on each side. Bit of wood glue round the edge. Sandwich the picture between the hardboard and strips. Job done!
She's a lovely boat. I love the little glimpses of her past life, the exhaust and the classic grandad tobacco tin sorting cupboard, mixed with the new technology of the air fryer and battery pack thing. Just wonderful. Thanks for the tour!

How often do you empty your toilet and where can you, l don’t think emptying it in the canal would be appreciated. The solar power battery pack, is a real game changer. Think of all the wonderful meal you can make in advance and just warm up over winter. Wellbeingonwater winter soup. As for the water tank I think you can buy water purifying tablets that could be helpful. (If and when you feel like doing that job) it wonderful that you see and share the past, present and future of your boat.

Thought about your problem with water coming in from the sliding hatch, came up with an idea for you to try.
Attach a short piece of string or rope (using tape) to the corner of the hatch, ideally from the inside of the corner. Let it hang down a couple inches below the corner. The rain water should use the dangling end as a downspout, and will not want to follow along the wall of the narrowboat.

It might be a good safety feature to fit an Alde gas bubble tester in your gas locker, you would be able then to check your whole gas system for leaks, and then when your BSS is due you I believe you don’t need an expensive gas test. I have one on my boat which I live on, and is moored on the Thames upstream from Oxford take care and enjoy the life

  • @thegregdavieschannel

    This was really well timed.
I'm trying to spec out my boat project and source the bits with an almost non existent budget.
The water issue is right on topic for me. I'm currently debating whether to fork out £500+ to build water tanks, I don't have the space for one single tank of a decent enough size. I'd also have the same concerns about maintaining it to drinking water standards.
I've actually been thinking about one of these reverse osmosis setups. Apparently they can produce drinking quality water from rivers, canals or the sea. They are cheaper than water tanks and take up a lot less space.
I didn't realise you could get solar panels as powerful as the ones you have. I've been looking at second hand panels and haven't really found anything more than about half a kilowatt each.
Even for a seasoned engineer I'm finding it pretty challenging to find solutions to small boat issues.

Wow I'm not surprised that chimney scares you if you forgot to put it down. It must get hot? We had a cruiser with a big leather top to keep the rain off, so we would have to put it down when we went under a low bridge. How well do the solar panels keep you topped up without having to run the generator? Great idea with the air fryer, yeah it would be too hot to run that over in the summer. We had a small gas oven with two hobs so it wasn't too bad cooking in the summer. Why don't you use the water tank? Eckhart Tolle on the bookshelf, nice. RE the bedroom buy some dehumidifier packs, I use them in the car they work great. Nice boat.

I thought for a second from the title may that you were thinking of moving into a tiny home *gasp*,you can change the boats name by (copied from the internet) "Start by taking any and every item bearing the boat's name off the boat this means documents, decor items, nameboards, and even life rings. Then, strike the name from every record, ranging from log books to maintenance documents." However, before the name is revealed or anything with the new name enters the boat, a purging and ceremony (party) of renaming must be completed if you need to change the name of a boat.

Unfortunately Your solar isn't 1.5kw per panel, lol. More like 330w per panel.

I think she has got her terminology mixed up, no doubt she has been correctly been told that they are 1.5KWp panels but as you know that doesn’t equate to kWh.

Maybe 1.5kw in total for the system, which would be 375w per panel.

      They look like 360w panels x 5 = 1.9kw.

Lovely and very interesting video! Does the shower water come from the water tank, or also the jugs? Can you get a warm shower ie. is there heated water? I guess there's a pump to create the necessary water pressure?

morning May. I have a question about the water, if you keep filling the same tank, and there is water left in, how do you keep it santised, ok for drinking, that sort of thing, and do you clean that tank regular.
the reason i ask, is that, the refugee barge, and i said to my wife, i bet they have trouble with the water, couple days after refugee's arrived on it, they were removed, because of the water. you answered my question as usual half way through the video lol, great job May

@@tao6085 i agree with that, even if the water is supplied by a hose, for 500, it has to be stored, ready for when needed, the air con, wow if they go air con great for them, as we dont usual have air on british homes, i have worked in food factories, hospitals, gmys, and other public palces, where we have to run the water, for 5 to 10 minutes per week, so there is no stagnant water, and sign for it, showers sinks, and the likes, i said to my wife a week before this is going to be a problem, im just a cleaner, not government official that should know,

Legionella thrives in warm water. Hot water should be above 60 degrees Celsius to kill it. Hot water systems which are not regularly used or do maintain that temperature are at risk from it, including domestic systems. Some types of aircon have a humidification function and the vapour from the evaporators for the condensate where bacteria thrive can contaminate it. I think May said that she doesn't use the water tank for drinking water and does not want to open that can of worms, potentially quite literally 😀
