May sweetheart, this is what I'm talking about. Safety is a mindset. "Worries and anxieties intrusive scarry thoughts" NO! NOT until AFTER. Replace it with watching that Bow, NO "observing" from outside of yourself. IT IS HAPPENING to YOU. Replace mentally all these thoughts with being IN THE MOMENT, BEING THERE. You have data. YOU did it. And you will do it again.
Safety is being there in the moment mentally and spiritually. CONCENTRATE. "Do or do not, there is no try" THIS you have done!! Calm and safety will flow through you.
"A Narrowboater must have the deepest commitment, the most serious mind. All her life has she looked away…to the future. Never her mind on where she was. Hmm? What she was DOING!”
From portable radial saws to electric drills to being near the contacts on your batteries, CONCENTRATE.
You a Hero!!! Be Safe and Happy Travels!

May, my tip for the horror that is lift bridges is a ratchet strap the type they use for securing loads on small trailers and car roof racks. It might be slow but its not as strenuous as what 198 put you through. They also work when loopd into long lengths to move very heavy Lock Gates if there is a convenient post or tree to wrap the strap around .

Look up a bit of kit called a "come-along." It's basically a block & tackle with a ratchet handle (like your windless), with a steel cable and snap-hooks at each end. I don't know what it's called in the UK. (Might be called a "cable winch puller.") A lightweight one should cost somewhere around £35. Best place to look for one is probably somewhere that sells tools to farmers and mechanics. I've often thought one or two of those ought to be part of every boater's stash of equipment. You could have gotten that lock gate and bridge opened without any struggle at all.

Nice one May. I normally nose up to a lift bridge, tie to it, climb up. Lift the bridge, pull thru, then lower it. Well done for fighting that bridge down! Try tieing your rope to the ring on the ground, up & thru a link of chain, back down to and thru the ring, then pull up on the rope. That way you can use your strong thigh muscles, your weight doesnt matter & you have a two to one mechanical advantage to make the pull less.

In the whole history of UA-cam I have never been so invested in a video 😂 I'm a singlehanded narrowboater too, and it's great but just occasionally the struggle is bloody real. You need what we here in the U.S.call a come-a-long! It's a hand winch with hooks on either end with a length of cable with which you hook one end to the bridge, the other to the piece at the bottom, then you could ratchet the bridge with one hand.

I feel your pain May, a few years ago on the Oxford canal I had the same problem. The design of the lift bridges was such that it was nigh on impossible for a single handler to operate them. I was more fortunate as it was summer and just waited for another crew to help. I sincerely hope that CRT see your vlog and make all lift bridges on the system solo friendly. Otherwise it's an accident waiting to happen! Love your tenacity and good luck.

Regarding the Bridge. Carry a length of line from a sailing supply shop. Even a 1/4" dia. line is very strong. With the bridge, tie one end to the ground loop and then thread the line through a chain link as high as you can reach. Through the ground loop and through another chain loop. Pull down. You've a block and tackle like tool for mechanical advantage. While at the sailboat supply buy a single Harken block and a double and triple so you can you can make a block and tackle as required. As I said sailing gear is extremely strong for its size. Take great care with heavy stuff. Oh, the pole was a good idea but too long. Might want to carry the odd pole for prying or in that case supporting.

Well this brought back many memories of the Oxford Canal! Those lift bridges north of Somerton Deep Lock are usually chained in the open position, and yes, there are very difficult for single boaters if they are left down. Early in my boating life I was going south from Banbury on a very windy day (too windy for safe boating I now know) and on one of those bridges the hasp that the chain is secured to had been pulled out of the ground by the force of the wind. I managed to get onto the bank, holding the boat with the centreline, and open the bridge but there was nothing to secure it to. The wind caught the boat and the window on my brand new cratch smashed against the bridge. Luckily two dog walkers appeared and held the bridge open for me.
Happy cruising! Peter of narrowboat Bandoneon 🙂

  • @user-xw6wj2qh5n
    @user-xw6wj2qh5n 6 місяців тому

For the next lift bridge just make sure you have a piece of rope ready. Tie one end to the chain, pass the other end through the ring on the ground, then through the next link down the chain from where you first tied the rope, then through the ring again. That gives you a 4:1 power advantage. If still not enough add through another link of the chain and the ring again for a 6:1, then pull. There will be very little tension on the end of the rope as you tie it off and so after you go through the bridge it is easy to let it close again. You MUST reclose the bridge after passing through. You can be in real trouble for leaving a bridge open if you are caught. Let your rope and brain do the work instead of risking injury.

This episode was fun to watch.
Having some experience from sailing, I would have straight away tried walking up the lever to see if I could outweigh it.
Eventually had a hammer, a nail, and some rope handy to lock the lever down with a knot, then go through, pull the knot open, gain my rope back, and have the bridge down again.
However, everyone has an individual solution...

Attaching one of your ropes to the chain on the bridge and feeding the other end trough the eye of the hook on the floor and then pull the rope, might have made it easier.but the important thing was, you did not give up and succeeded in the end.
