I'm glad Google still allows you to feel like you own the phone you bought from them
So does apple.
@@dream_77707 so true, your parts are even paired to your own phone!
A small victory when their OS is literally adware as the number-one objective.
@@YearsOfLeadPoisoning it's the absolute opposite, are you ok?
@@realnoscope He's talking about Google
Nice to see it’s more repairable than most phones, the free fingerprint calibration thing is a nice touch.
Yes, but it doesn't work one the pixel 7 pro for a few people.
@@gavanraine1787 if the fp loss is due to persist.img it wont bring it back.
Doesn't work on my pixel 6a
Wow, that’s just sad. Companies like that love squeezing money out of people.
Thank you for inciting manufacturers to make repairing their products easier, and also to avoid using clickbait titles and thumbnails for your videos.
Makes for a much shorter video when the swap only results in one fixable error. I've carried a Pixel since they came out and am happy to see Google continue to make repairable phones for the end user. Thanks as always for your hard work making these videos.
Possible idea for removing the battery.
It seems to me like the clear plastic pull tab in the centre is one long strip held together with a bit of glue. If you were to pull it apart so you had one end of the plastic in either hand, you should be able to slide it back and forth like a saw and possibly then slice through the adhesive on the underside of the battery.
Might not work but worth a shot for next time maybe?
JerryRigEverything i think tried that method.
Or Hugh with the last model. Didn't worked
Ever since the Pixel 3 XL, Google went overboard with the glue
I’ve seen someone try that on YT and it still wouldn’t budge
That’s exactly what google says in their repair manual, but you have to preheat the adhesive before the “sawing”.
Or the cutting thread for display can be used as a "saw"
@@szecsit13 Yeah that's what I thought...heat, maybe isopropyl alcohol, then "saw". At least it's better than Samsung
My only subscription where I can hit the thumbs up right at the beginning and never get to change my mind. Huge thanks Hugh!
The finger print sensor needing a re calibration honestly makes sense. If someone could get into anyone's pixel with a dummy finger print sensor, it would be a huge security issue. The face unlock still working is another issue though, but unlike apples it's just a camera face unlock so I'm not sure how secure it is to begin with? Other then that, google still makes some of the best phones if you're looking for user repairs or software modding, they have a VERY active rooting and custom rom scene, it would be cool to see you cover it on newer pixels in a future video!
the camera on pixel 7 has depth sensing, so it's harder to bypass
So, I kinda understand why Apple pairs some of its biometric components like the FaceID, TouchID sensors, but pairing components like the battery is a little bit too much imho.
No, doesnt make any sense. Samsungs(except A51) didnt need any pairing and no one ever got hacked by replacing the scanner. ITS JUST AN INPUT DEVICE, THE VERIFICATION HAPPENS IN THE CPU OR STORAGE. If you really wanted to hack someone by replacing the scanner you would need to know their hash and make a scanner that sends out this specific hash/checksum everytime but you also would need to get past BEFORE FIRST UNLOCK bc scanner disabled.
Also even if its for security why cant we just re enable it, if we already verified its not tampered with??!??
Even door locks from the 90s with fingerprint scanners allow the replacement, BECAUSE THE VERIFICATION HAPPENS INSIDE THE STORAGE OR PROCESSOR.
If you could hack door locks with a fingerprint scanner LPL would have already covered how to readout the Data and input it into a tampered scanner and assemble the thing.
If you have proof otherwise tell me, but this is how Ive learned it!
A dummy fingerprint reader wouldn't do anything for you anyway.
The reader is just a sensor, but the result is evaluated by the security chip on the phone.
6:00 With the right amount of alcohol... Story of my life.

@@Shivvy_ Cheers! 🍻
I bought a Motorola Edge 20 Pro, and I was pleasantly surprised to get a 30W charger, and even an USB-C - HDMI cable! I can emulate and play PS1 games on my TV, it's crazy good
Thank you for this teardown and swap test 👍 Agreed, the dreaded soldered usb c connector... I had to replace the one on my Pixel 2 XL, and is was easy to do... once I got the display off.
Great work Mr. Jeffrey.
This is a "Pass" for Google, and will add to the popularity of the Pixels.
Well done!
Anthony
Ngl, I'm impressed. It might not be most easiest to repair, but at least it is. Apart from that, they smashed it every other aspect of the phone. Most notably the hardware level security of thr phone. They have achieved the highest rating achievable for it. To get that rating, the phone should be able to withstand against threat actors like nation-state actors with unlimited resources and time. That's no easy thing to do. As a Security consultant, I'm really impressed by their work. They even included security measures to their threat model to Make sure even Google employees can't access your data.
It's almost as if Apple's excuse of locking down components for security is absolute horseshit. I'm glad to see a phone can be made secure and repairable.
I am glad I went with the Pixel 7 pro as my phone. I just broke my display and was worried it opened from the back and I'd have to disassemble the whole phone to replace it. I'm glad that they went the apple route here and made it open in the front.
This is a excellent breakdown of repairing the Pixel 7.
I'd love to see Hugh attempt to transfer a fingerprint sensor to a new screen without one. It's a very difficult procedure without warping and snapping it. One thing these kinds of videos often miss is when you're repairing a device you generally don't have a donor device for parts. You're usually going through a 3rd party to get said parts and often they make you do a lot of the hard work. This is usually where the hard stuff happens with pixel phones. The ideal currently is to go through ifixit since they have OEM parts for pixels, but they aren't always in stock and new phones don't have those parts.
Also in professional repair you generally always heat the battery to lift it like you would a screen. Using pull tabs in theory works, but in practice almost every tech I know gets it 2/10 times and ends up using heat and leverage to slowly lift it.
As always I love your presentation and format of the videos. The focus you put on software locks is always appreciated. The only thing I wish was different is how I felt when the calibration tool worked for you seamlessly. I have tried that tool so many times with many devices and underlying software/cables/browsers/etc. I haven't gotten that tool to work for me even once.
These videos make me proud to be a Pixel owner, it really shows that you CAN have sleek design and the latest features, without making your hardware and software anti-consumer.
(now if only Google could do the same with UA-cam 😂)
Only missing a headphone jack. ZenFone does have one but doesn't allow easy bootloader unlocking (it does but warranty gets voided)
This hardware requires a calibration tool that could be taken offline at any moment, has no headphone jack, and has no SD card slot. This is insanely anti-consumer.
@@crashniels dude, I have an old galaxy S9 plus and I don't use headphone jack myself, only and strictly tws earbuds and Bluetooth speaker
@@danteerskine7678 I also have wireless buds but I rarely use them. Mostly it's my Sennheiser or my Bayer dynamic which are wired only. Sound quality is pretty crap on Bluetooth.
@@crashniels I love my sound with heavy bass, and clear vocals, pretty much what the majority of earbuds with silicone tips deliver, I have a cheap Bluedio Hi hurricane tws earbuds and it's insane how loud and bassy these super cheap earbuds are
somehow this relaxes me. Like a timeout in a silent white void.
I think this swap test requires a lot of metal energies. Nice job!
Now, this is a phone you truly OWN!
Good luck trying to remove the screen without breaking it and the display cable sounds like a pain as well. And you just heard him about the battery it was the most challenging thing to remove. So yeah you own it but if you try to repair it yourself then what you own will be a paperweight 😅
You mean that google own you
@@Jeffery_Saulter Apple are collecting your information and giving you ads based on that too. You prob didn't know that because you were too busy spitting on Google!
@@sammyjammy6647 Well, they did make it kinda of hard but I am confident that I would be able to do it without a problem.
How do I own the phone when I'm 100% reliant on Google providing a calibration tool? If they take that tool away, I'm screwed if I need a new screen. I don't own the phone at all, Google does.
I feel like a teardown of the Pixel 7 Pro is needed. A curved screen on the front and similar back, removing a curved screen is very hard and it's almost guaranteed that you'll destroy the screen
I bought mine in October, had the mother board replaced yesterday. It is working better now than it did out of the box.
I'm so happy with my Pixel 7 Pro. It's by far the best phone I've ever had, and im SO happy to have finally gotten out of Apples walled garden. So much more freedom now.
Thank you Hugh! An amazing videos as always!
Aside from the battery adhesive and the soldered charging port, it seems like Google has things set up very well. Apple could take a few pages out of their books for the better.
That browser solution is just brilliant!
I always look forward to a Hugh Jeffreys video!!! You go Hugh!!! :)
It’s satisfying to watch your videos
Thank you, Hugh Januz
5:20 move that little transparent sheet left and right to cut down the adhesive just like saw
agree with the review. It's good that there's nothing special required to change the screen (I think that's #1 failure point for all smartphones). It's bad that charging port is soldered on main board, but potentially if it has wireless charging - port isn't necessary (very useful, I agree, but not critical).
The cream colored one looks like an discolored white phone. Haha.
I love your channel I pulled my pc apart and fix it
Apple should take notes of googles repairability. The calibration i think is necessary for the fingerprint scanner to work. Good job google. I think i will at last get rid of my iphone xr and go for google pixel 7 or 7 pro👌🏻
Doubtful that they ever will. Apple prefers that customers go back to them for repairs to make more $$$$. Their Self-Repair program is just lip service to pretend to comply with right to repair.
This phone is literally harder to repair than iPhone 14, what are you talking about? 😅
You’ll be back. Muhahahaha 😂
Apple won't take any notes and in fact they'll make it worse for repairing just so they can squeeze every penny that can and can't be, like they always do to make money from everything from smallest to biggest things
@@anianii Are you high?

Love the new intro🖤
I'm really happy with my purchase (P7Pro). I can say that it's a S10 (Previous phone) on steroid.
Great video!!
Im currently on a Galaxy S8. Im stuck between a Pixel 7 or a S22.
Better than the iPhone for sure. Thank you for showing us!
Name one phone that isn't.
Hugh, I Love my Pixel 6. Google was really after me to upgrade to a Pixel 7. But, I think I will wait until 8 or 9. I am so grateful for Open Source and a true RTR.
Thanks for another great video.
also it drops support for 32 bit apps, which sucks for me, so yeah, i'm also gonna skip a generation here.
I like that they tried to improve the cooling of the phone, my pixel 6 pro overheated a few times
I love the pixel 7! It’s compact, affordable, and still great!
I recommend trying to get an AOD machine, works way better to detach displays on pixels
Love the videos Hugh. I am curious what phone you use as your daily driver, and why you choose to use it?
the battery tab to remove battery, you need to peel the top clear plastic bit off, till its in two parts, take one each hand and slice and move it up and down till battery comes up, use some IPA it will come out very easy :)
Keep doing this series!
Much better than the 6. The 6 looked like Google found random parts and threw them in a phone.
One major factor when considering this phone or the new Apple Phone is the cost I really can’t afford to pay 1000 dollars or more for either one of these phones I know they have payment plans available but by the time you have paid for it you’ll probably want to buy a new one
He did the teardown on the Pixel 7 version, which costs 600 $
thank for video😘😘
Hi Hugh, I was just wondering what phone you use currently and any reasons why you do so?
I hope everybody likes your comment so it goes to the top for him to see
@@AmmarVanKorsha thanks bro
I remember in a previous video (I don't exactly remember which one), he said that his main phone is a BlackBerry Key2
Yh I remember it now.
That's not how you use that tab on the battery, it is there to slice the adhesive, that would make it easier
Glad to see that
Awesome new intro!
ویدیو خوبی بود لذت بردم.
was eagerly waiting for your videos to see pixel 7. it's good to see.
Hugh, given all the criticisms you give manufacturers I'm super curious what phone do you currently use? I don't mean to say anything you say is unjustified, I just wanna know what your personal bar you set for devices vs your professional bar. Regardless, awesome video!
@@th3_ne0__ Nice Saber profile pic
@@th3_ne0__ Blackberry Priv or Key2 I believe

Now they only need to put the charging port on a separate board or cable.
We cannot thank you enough for putting out these timely assessment cum 'heads-up tips' videos.
You take a lot of risk in making these!
WATCH AND LEARN APPLE!!! Google doing stuff right
Apple will just add a seventh kind of screw with the rest. The octolobe.
Yeah, like gluing the battery to hell, making the OLED easily breakable in disassembly and sparing you the charger. Good job copying Apple, Samsung! Oh, wait...
@@em0_tion Idk if you know that Samsung is also making the screens of the iphones + i am not sure what you mean by "Easily breakable" its a screen, unless you put it in a big bracket it will always be "easily breakable" (Емилиане!)
@@danyuzunov (Емилиян 😉🤝) Just that particular disassembly design that barely allows any mechanical stress, but fair point - they're all one sneeze away from death, Дани. 🤣👍
Yay soldiered down type c ports
i am sure you are aware that many are reporting that the glass shielding the camera on pixel 7 are cracking, so my question is that is it possible to replace only that particular or will i have to replace the whole body?
Even if they are not going out of their way to make the phone repairable at least they are not actively hostile to the concept. While your average end user probably shouldn't attempt this its nothing a general electronics repair shop couldn't handle. It would be nice if the recalibration was built into the OS but at least its provided free of charge to everyone and not just restricted to authroized repair centers.
finally, a phone worth upgrading to from a galaxy s10
5:06 I don't think that's a pull tab, I think it's supposed to be used to slice the adhesive by pulling it back and forth with both hands, kinda like removing emblems for cars with a fishing line
here's what I'm talking about ua-cam.com/video/PQ1BOhN7rxU/v-deo.html
Zippo lighter fluid is great for removing the heats of stickers. An added benefit it dries without any residue.
Thanks for another great video 🙂
Hi, Hugh. Please tell me, could the master damage nfc and qi during repair? After replacing the display glass, these modules stopped working. But this surprises me, since they are at the back. And in your video I didn't see these plumes under the display.
Thanks
As usual. Replacing battery will be painstaking. The norm with most flagship.
How often do you replace it?
Goodmorning Mr Hugh.

love new intro
Nice new intro :)
My only gripe with the fingerprint sensor recalibration tool is that it's only online. If they can provide an app for offline use it would be worth it.
Same thing I was thinking 👍🏿
I have the Pixi 6 pro, it's been a great phone from new , just a couple of software issues along the way, hardware wise its very good.
Software issues is google,s middle name
I have a pixel 3a and the battery is not holding charge so I looked to see if I can replace and after watching a few videos just thought no, I don't have a hot plate and no matter how careful I am sure I would mess it up (I repair DJ equipment for a living) . Then I tried to find a local company to replace for me and no one had batteries in stock and needed to order, so the repair was going to be a few weeks and I need this for my job, so I bought a pixel 6a and used the google trade in on the old one. It looked like the pixel 3rd party repair in my area is quite limited which is a shame, because I really like the phone especially as I bought another. Iphone or Samsung repairs no problem I can walk in and have replaced next day.
Well made vid!
Good job google just Jesus chill with the battery glue, and more modularity plz
Really good video mr jeffreys.
I can’t wait until I get my pixel 7 in the mail
Fun fact: the 6a had a weaker adhesive than even the 6,and especially the 7
The a series in general are always easier to repair.
@@axethepenguin A trend that's now carried on with the Pixel 7a, that opens from the front and the back.
@@michaelball93 yes I have seen!
8:36 I haven't checked it out but I think the recalibration software should be downloadable, google can remove it from the internet any time, I hate online softwares.
Thank you.

I really don't get why companies even bother with the adhesive for the batteries. There's literally no room for them to move anyway once the phone is assembled, so what's the point other than to annoy people repairing them?
There should be adhesive so it doesn't rattle, but it definitely shouldn't be so strong
@@satsumagt5284 Most of them are so tightly sandwiched in that they wouldn't have any room to rattle even without adhesive.
@@mattelder1971 Still think it should be glued. Just please, not the glue that would bond car body panels together
@@satsumagt5284 just put removable adhesive then?
@@keonxd8918 weaker adhesive. The stuff they use seems more fit to hold an entire desktop to the wall, than to hold just a battery inside a glued-back phone
Nice Phone and Nice Video Hugh!
What's your opinion about the camera glass shattering due to the temperature?
Tons of people including me are having issues with spontaneous camera glass shattering on the back. Do you have a way to replace the rear camera glass cover? Not the camera module -- literally just the glass
YESSS HUGH!!!
Can we talk about the back glass in these videos?
I'm sure Google doesnt expect one to swap the board into an entire new frame for a repair, right?
Good job!
Top their! Thanks Hugh, Thanks Google
The LCD on this phone is like paper and very easy to break from a drop. Have already done many screen replacements on these.
It’s oled lol not LCD.
@@MrCoffeeByte LCD has become the generic term for displays in the repair industry. Even when I do an RMA, the box still says LCD. I know it's OLED.
@@mmaaddict78 Oem tags for parts label them oled or lcd. Never the same due to differences in parts. If it’s a third party then it’s on them. But there are two differences on the types of panels they are.
@@MrCoffeeByte I have not seen a LCD available to buy for this phone. They are all OLED as far as I have seen. I've been fixing phones for 8 years, I know the difference between OLED and LCD.
i've got no clue how soldered stuff works, but does the USB C port on this phone being soldered make it impossible to replace? or, is it still replaceable but just harder to do so?
You can replace it but you have to desolder the port, and it often involves flux and a microscopic level of work. However, for regular people, it's just impossible to replace.
Watching this on my brand new Pixel 7!
Good for Google, very pleased given I just bought the 7
Did anything look weird on the back panel camera bar? My Pixel 7 camera glass exterior panel just shattered out of blue. Many users are seeing the same issue. It did heat up and shutdown day to two around shattering of glass.
Best value for money on a phone right now
if only it had headphone jack.... would be a dreamphone
And/or a microSD card slot - if you can have a SIM tray after all...
@@fetchstixRHD I agree, but at the same time, it's difficult to fill 128gb on a phone, but love having the option of SD it's really useful
The usb-c also works as an audioport
That was really cool, but i wish you had done this with the pros instead really wanted to see how they fit the 3 cameras in after seeing how tight it is on this one
Do you happen to do phone repairs for people?
