The only way I will make something. I built a Microwave insert with a trash can insert on the opposite side and underneath. If we ever have another " Bigger " earthquake, I am taking cover in the trash can side. Probably be the only thing left standing, lol

Great stuff. Some corners NOT cut aren't highlighted in the narration. For example, I noticed Ice & Water Shield on the roof underlayment over the walls. He didn't say anything, but I saw the peel-off. Kudos!
Regarding screws. Not all screws are equal; it would be nice to hear what he's using. Deck screws lack sheer strength and are not for framing, and especially not for joist hangers. An inspector should fail a job framed with them. As you know, joist hanger nails are doubly thick (and triply expensive), as are joist hanger screws.
Common ring shank nails provide similar non-slip properties as screws, with all the sheer strength needed but the added ease of using a nail gun. Screw shank holds even better, but less common. Good luck ever removing them without a 4' crowbar and ripping the wood, but if you're removing it, you probably need to replace the lumber anyway.
Since one of the main draws of your videos is the educational factor, it's good to have these distinctions explained every time, until it's drilled in (pun intended, haha!)

I remember seeing, as a teen decades ago, a new garage go up next door...and the builder being disappointed that he couldn't throw the whole thing together in a single day! It actually took him (gasp!) a second day to finish!

I would watch that. The re-inspection of previous rework and makeovers. The owners opinions of how things have held up the last few years, average savings with the better insulation and efficiency of the products used. I love this show, I have a home that needs everything. Homes were definitely built to different specifications in early 1950s.

As one who has done some work for family before. Like putting up a small shed from an assembly kit or replacing a switch or replacing an outlet. Or even solving issues with appliances. Why do people even try to do something so out of their comfort zone especially when it’s something that can kill someone or hurt someone.

their might be some but given this was an early 2000s episode there was probably not a good recording of it, probably on vhs and was converted to digital.
This was a problem for shows in the 90s as because they were shot digitally with equipment of the time, it could not be upscaled like film can. (its why you dont see star trek voyager being remastered like TNG was)

One thing i wondered about: where i work in new jersey, you get use screws for framing, even deck screws, theyll fail it every time. Screws hold great, but they have poor sheer strength.

    • @DozIT
      @DozIT 9 місяців тому

Does sheer strength matter once the structure is built? During construction sure, but once it’s sheethed and all one unit, a force requiring high sheer strength shouldn’t be possible - if it is you have bigger problems!

Originally my garage had a 18 inch footing and a concrete slab floor. Twenty years of sitting in water after every heavy rain took it's toll. The floor crumbled and the bottom of the walls rotted. I braced the garage and jacked it up. I had three foot ddep footing poured. Then two layers of blocks on top to raise it above ground level. Next I removed one foot off the bottom of all the walls. Then I added 18 inches on to each wall. Then I dropped onto a new sill plate. I need the garage a bit higher so I could have a over head door. After a needw roof and vinyl siding. I had a new floor poured over raise mesh. Idid all the work myself.

From my understanding, yes. However, laws and enforcement are lax. Often, they just close down and rebrand to avoid paying court judgements and/or move on to some other place. Ironically, and sadly, Mike Holmes is now being accused of some the same things with a housing development he's closely associated with. Shoddy construction, including some being condemned and torn down, and not standing behind his reputation. CBC has more coverage. Back when these aired, he was in top form and helped many people. Enjoying these episodes.

Only problem I can see is the waste of good usable wood on ALL of his jobs!! Probably enough to offset many, many projects ! Yes maybe not this one or specific jobs but too much is cut in the middle and just thrown away!! I get it production times, etc but a LOT could be salvaged and used on other projects!!

Holmes and crew are primarily home builders. Emphasis being economy and speed versus preservation and reusing materials. One also notices that with the finishes they often choose and various design compromises.

Mike, I wish you were in the U.S.. I need help. I bought a house 2 years ago. I'm a first time homeowner at 54 years of age. I bought without conditions like an inspection. Previous owners only took cash offers not through a bank. I didn't know any better. Now I'm having issues. Yard is flooded, septic tank is too small and storm water fills it up causing sewage to sweep out. While yard smells like septic. No insulation in walls or attic. Very narrow crawl space so I or contractors can't get in. Floor joists gave away in bedroom causing dresser to tip over. No joist hangers and rusty nails. Electric plugs have no ground. Just 2 prongs. Holes in Soffit where birds and cats get in. The toilet is sinking from the soft floors. Sill plates and studs in the garage are rotting from all the flooding in the yard. Insulation in the garage has asbestos. The ceiling in the garage is sagging in the middle. Paint on the outside of the house is just primer. Windows are not insulated. Front door seals leak air. No HVAC system. Just ventless propane heaters on the wall. I have a lot more going on with the house. It's gonna cost me thousands of dollars I didn't count on when buying the house. I need help and don't know who to turn to. I bought a lemon house because it was what I could afford. Nice neighborhood and I love my back yard when it's not flooded. My trees are dying because of the flooding. Please, if you know someone in the U.S. that does what you do I really need their help. Please, I'm begging you.

I don't know where you build, but where I have built in Iowa it is 42" to the bottom of the foundation - to get below frost line. In southern Minnesota it is 54" for the same reason. And yes, that is for garages too. He is building in Toronto. I have to assume the '4 foot deep' thing is how they roll north of the US.
And of course, that is a double-wall structure, meaning the interior is finished. Always an option.

Most of the time we can shame contractors, including here. However, Mike over does stuff to the point where you're missing half the market that demands a single top plate instead of a double, and 4 inch concrete instead of 6. Sometimes a garage can be done for less than your extras, just cause you like extra credit

Liability. Also, such issues are generally treated as civil matters. About the only way it's criminal in many places is if they take money and do no work. Shady contactors know this and will at least start the job and then some. Bad quality isn't a crime. Getting a court judgement means little since they'll just close down and rebrand under a new name to avoid paying.
