  • Join Christina Sit, Manager, Community Strategic Partnerships and Colleen McMillan, Advocacy Lead, both working at The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada (LLSC), to learn more about the Health Technology Assessment (HTA) and the role that nurses can play in securing public coverage for patients.
LLSC makes submissions on behalf of Canadians affected by a blood cancer, to the Canadian Agency for Drugs and Technologies in Health (CADTH) which makes recommendations on which treatments should be covered by public health insurance. These recommendations are called Health Technology Assessments (HTA) in Canada.
The LLSC encourages oncology nurses and other healthcare professionals to add their voices to the conversation - as the ones working directly with blood cancer patients, their caregivers and families. As such, nurses are well suited to influence the four pillars of CADTH's deliberative framework, in particular the first one listed here:
    - Patient based values
    - Clinical benefit
    - Economic evaluation
    - Adoption feasibility
    Learning objectives:
    * Provide an outline of process used to evaluate treatments - HTA - for public
    coverage in Canada
    * Present the value of nurse's clinical experience in HTA
    * Outline a pathway for nurse participation in HTA
