    I miss the RTLs so much. They were a smooth, quiet, comfortable ride.

    Back in the late 70s we ran the Metroliners with baggage cars fitted with diesel generators on the hind end to power the a fleet coaches as the GG1 which hauled them over the road were not fitted for head end power, only steam generators which heated the old heritage equipment. Nice video.

    thanks for sharing. loved the shape of the turboliners . went to albany and upper ny and ne and saw them in storage . shame theyve been obsoleted . hear they may have been scrapped . too bad at least give one example to a museum or something.

    Amtrak and Shoreliners mixed together, now that's something you don't see every day.

    wow look at those Horizon cars on the Amtrak train, their sparkling clean!(but why are they on an Empire service run, when Horizons are midwest based?)

    That very well could have been my dad piloting one of those Amtrak trains... I remember riding up front in the Turbos but my memories of FL-9s is sadly extremely limited.

    Are those Amtrak Horizon cars at 1:10? I don't recall ever seeing those on the Hudson Line.

    I think those are generator cars. Baggage cars wouldn't have vents along their sides and it's too short to be one Amtrak would have used at that date.

    God I miss those old Amtrak Rohr turbotrains. They were such a comfortable ride. So much better than the cheesy, uncomfortable amfleet cars they use today.

      The Turbotrains WERE great when they worked. I remember riding on them a number of times and I liked them. Problems were they were unreliable and very expensive to operate.

      @@cats0182Well my son thinks that Siemens, Progress Rail, or any other company that builds railroad equipment should build full size working replicas of Amtrak Turboliners with modern features like recycled ♻️ aluminum bodies and frames, Plexiglas or safety glass windows 🪟 and skylights, Cummins, Caterpillar, or Genset diesel motors that run on biodiesel or renewable diesel with mufflers and catalytic converters, LED headlights, ditch lights, taillights, and strobe light, and Wi-Fi.

    Were the weird looking baggage cars behind the Amtrak FL9s for hotel power? Or were they just that, baggage cars?

      elevatorman17 if I'm correct, they equipped the 3rd rail shoes on some Turboliners to allow operations into Grand Central and Penn Station

    Nice backdrop of the High Line Bridge. Remember passing under it on many trips to NYC. Would love to walk on it now. Probably won't have a chance to.

    I just read in Railfan & Railroad that the Turbos are TOAST. NY State wants to dispose of them all immediately and except for one offer to turn one set into a restaurant, they all are supposed to be scrapped along with all the spare parts.

    Interesting that they needed 2 FL-9's to pull those MetroNorth trains. Guess the FL-9's were pretty well used up by that time.

    • @earlknightjr.1341
      @earlknightjr.1341 4 роки тому

      HELLO! ONE FL-9 ONLY TOPPED OUT AT 1,750 HP! THAT'S LESS THAN 2,000HP! SO THEY NEEDED TWO FL-9'S IN MANY CASES. THEY COULD ROLL, PLUS THE DESIGN THEY HAD WAS GREAT! I STOOD BEHIND THEM ON THE WAY HOME FROM N.Y. TO CONNECTICUT AND TO HEAR THEM REVVING UP AND SLOWING DOWN WAS GREAT! THEY COULD JET, BUT THE HSP'ER WAS TOO LOW FOR THAT ENGINE! THEY NEVER UPGRADED THE HSP'ER IN THOSE ENGINES! TOO LAZY I GUESS. BUT THEY WERE WORKHORSES! I LOVED THEM! EARL OF EL BARRIO, NYC,NY 9:01AM 7/29/20.

    • @amtrak706
      @amtrak706 4 роки тому

      @@earlknightjr.1341 Kind of an odd conclusion to come to that they were too “lazy” to upgrade the FL9s. At the time they were built, 1750hp was state of the art for a 16 cylinder prime mover. And in the early 1990s, 10 units were rebuilt as FL9ACs, with early GTO-based AC traction and 3200hp 12 cylinder 710 prime movers. Unfortunately, they were plagued with technical problems and only lasted a few years in service, all being retired by 2001. They were all scrapped in 2005.

      Honestly though. Those old brutes might not be as efficient as the Genesis locomotives used now are, but they sure are better looking and more unique. They should restore a few to use as NPCUs like the F40PH "Cabbages", that would be a unique way to use them.

      My special needs son agrees with you on that completely! He thinks F Units along with many other things related to the railroads are highly underrated and thinks that all should be preserved, restored, and put back into service. He also thinks that Siemens, Progress Rail, or any other company that builds railroad equipment should build full size working replicas of FL9's and Turboliners with modern features like recycled ♻️ aluminum bodies and frames, Plexiglas and/or safety glass windows 🪟, Cummins, Caterpillar, or Genset diesel motors that run on biodiesel or renewable diesel with mufflers and catalytic converters, LED headlights, ditch lights, taillights, and strobe light.
