And that's why I loved it.
It's simple towards the core aspect of the vanilla and it does it so much justice in proving core concepts in improvement towards a better ship in your career. It's a perfect starter. 1:30 = perfect explanation. (The devs had it right until this point!) Excellent review!

I help run a squadron that provides mentoring and assitance to new players, and we found out something about the Cobra in regards to newer players. With the addition of core mining, the Cobra has a use: it's the first ship that's rather good at it. The three ships before it that are capable of fitting a Seismic charge simply don't have the internal space to fit more than one core deposit, or support more than one active limpet. On the other hand, the Cobra can carry two full cores (32t), support two active collectors, and is fast and maneuverable enough that mining isn't tedious. All for a startup price of about 2 mil.

    • @AltoStratusX1
      @AltoStratusX1 4 роки тому +13

This. When core mining first came out I outfitted an Asp X to give it a go. I hate how the Asp x handled (deceleration) and couldn't really afford much higher tier and I didn't wanna sell off one of my main ships to pick up the Phantom at the time so I flipped back to a Cobra. Out fitted it with no shield for max cargo. Had a ton of fun and almost died so my times by being careless lol. I used it for voids for a while cuz I actually had a ton of fun.

@@AltoStratusX1 Yes, the AspX is quite a respectable core minor. Even with assets totaling in the billions I still keep an Asp X around and have used it for core mining now and then.

I'll remember that the Cobra is a capable core minor should I run into anybody who is still a relative novice or curious about getting into ED. Getting into core mining with the low capital investment a Cobra requires would be an amazing game changer for a newer commanders.

It's definitely a great starter! Just started playing about a week ago and thus far have mine upgraded, stripped nonessentials to fit more fuel and cargo, believe I'm at 22t fuel capacity and 40 or so pieces of cargo, may be more than 40 but can't recall for certain at the moment! Removed the docking computer, super cruise assist, and shields to make room for it all 😂

@@nightraven7198 Too bad I got an Asp Explorer for the rare trade community goal. It is just a better ship in all aspects. A medium ship can have decent cargo space and all the bells and whistles for an explorer.
Not sure about speed and agility though, but the Asp is good enough in that department to do stupid things in the mail slot.
But I will stick to the Cobra anyway, at least until it is time to do tourism to Colonia/Sag A*/Beagle point and not just exploring close to the bubble (in the later case the range of my Cobra is sufficient to get a few first finds each trip).

I played Elite Dangerous for about 5 years... and a good part of this time I spent flying my Cobra MKIII: "Radiance". It simply... felt good. And you are right: there are ships that can outperform the Cobra MKIII in each individual task. However, as a Jack of All Trades, it is one of the best ships in the galaxy.
My final build was a specialized blockade-runner ship. Whenever a bunch of commanders was blocking a station during a community goal, my ship would be the one to enter the mail slot at 550mps, turn around, boost-brake, disable silent run, and land without getting shot even once.
    So good memories.
Plus, the Radiance had quite a bit of history. I flew her during the Lugh independence war on the side of the independentists. It became the perfect ship to run towards the Thargoid attack areas to rescue unfortunate pilots before they got abducted by the aliens. And she was part of the first light squadron that managed to kill a Thargoid, alongside commanders Raczaak, Han Tanhauser and Sulaco.
Yeah, Radiance may not be the best ship out there. But still she's an amazing ship.

My heavily engineered and customized Cobra MKIII-class ship, "Fastwalker", is the one I don't want to let go of. It's manevrable, fast, has decent hyperjump range ( about 20 l.y. unladen ), and I've taken it to abandoned places beyond the bubble, including the Thargoid ruins beyond the Pleiades Nebula and the Guardian ruins in Synuefe Sector. It took part in the fighting for the Alliance in the Libaia Bara system, aiding in its annexation by the Alioth Independents. I still remember the race for life in the Allied spaceport with the cracked canopy.

Did assorted jobs in my Sidewinder until I could afford an Imperial Eagle.
Bounty hunted my way to grade A parts, then saved up for a Courier.
Then bounty hunted again to max that out, before embarking on the grind for the Mamba.

Going to add my 2 cents here, even though I know this video is a bit older.
TL;DR I love this ship, and it reated me well when I was a n00blet.
For reference, I got Elite Dangerous after the April update. I was looking for new VR games, and Elite looked like just the kind of space/flight sim I was looking for (Spoiler alert: It was). When you start the game. When you are sitting there in your starting sidewinder in the n00b systems, The cobra MkIII is the BIG ship. It's the most expensive ship you can buy. I saw it, and I wanted, NEEDED to have it before I took off the proverbial 'training wheels'. I worked, and I grinded. Trying my hand at every mission they would pay me to do, until I bought it. And what I found.. Was a ship that defied my expectations. The Cobra MkIII may not be the BEST ship for anything, but it does anything you ask it to well enough. I Mined, hauled cargo, transported passengers, and even did a fair bit of combat in my cobra. Its the equivalent of a Swiss army knife. Eventually, I earned enough to buy my way into better, more specialized ships. An Asp for exploring, a Vulture for combat, etc, but the Cobra is still the one that felt the best to me. It was the one ship that buying it felt like I had 'made it'. More than the Anaconda even. Sure it's shields are paper thin, and the canopy can get destroyed by a stiff breeze, but the sheer flexibility of this ship is what I love.

When I first started playing E:D my first upgrade was the Adder, this was the ship I first learned in, made my mistakes, had to slowly upgrade parts as I could afford to (money was a lot harder to come by then). When I got the Cobra III I thought my problems would be over...that combat would be easier, I could carry as much as I wanted to, etc etc...I was wrong. I toughened it out until buying a Keelback, which was the versatile freighter that could defend itself that I guess I wanted. Never loved Cobra as much as either of these two ships that I still fly even though I own many more expensive and powerful ships. I hope to see an Adder review, these videos are nicely made.

Started with the Cobra mk3. I Kickstarted the game, starting at Lave with the Cobra and 1000credits. Haven't changed out of it. I went up against much larger ships, and won. In the original game, you weren't given a choice of upgrading to another ship. I was able to take out a Thargoid swarm with it (with the help of *cough*energybomb*cough*,) and could hold my own 1 on 1 with the larger ships. It's the little ship that can.
It isn't because it does everything well. It's because you can make it do whatever you want, and be a rather unassuming target in the process.

In the last two weeks this thing literarilly earned me all the credits I need for a proper chieftain without doing anything of that "road to riches" grind stuff. Instead I did whatever was pleasing me in that thing while constantly engineering the shit out of it once I unlocked another engineer. Flying it armortanked now with only grade one armor engineering access and it`s hillarious fun. Meanwhile the chieftain still is rusting in the station cuz I cannot get enough of the cobra, haha. The Cobra Mk3 is an awesome fun ship to fly. Love the look, feel, and engine sound. I am currently working to make Elite rank as a trader, so I am currently working on engineering my Cobra Mk3 as a Low Temp Diamond pirate. My theory is that in a well engineered Cobra with the right technique I can make more in one pirating run than I can trading commodities in a fully stocked Anaconda or maybe even a Type 9. With 16 to 20 tons of cargo space, I can make around 8 million credits per run towards my trade rank. Piracy small, fast, and efficient style.

I still like to fly it when I need something to run around in when I'm in the bubble, not really doing anything but soaking in the sights and sounds. Real exploration out in the black, I'll take my AspX, but my Cobra is like the city car I take out for a Sunday drive or a trip to the shops

I have a Cobra that I use for fun. It takes the sting out of grinding engineering materials because it's just so entertaining to fly and good at everything I need it to do without having to switch up ships.

Just started ed a couple weeks ago...I love my cobra. It's the exact experience I'm going thru now. Running missions to pay for a fuel scoop or to pay for pwr distributor engine you name it. I think about selling it and getting an aspx or a dbx but I got this...love for it.

Have played Elite since it came out on the BBC B Micro back in 1984. And in every version, I have owned and kept (where possible) the Cobra Mk III. It may not be the best in class for any task but it's class itself. The Classic Car of the space selection. In 20 years, we'll still remember the USS Enterprise, the Millennium Falcon and the Cobra Mk III.

I would have said at the end
"Is this the ship the best at anything? No.
Is this the ship that's the good at *everything?* Absolutely.
And that's why you should buy it, because it can do everything"

The Cobra is probably the first ship I recommend to any new player. No matter what you're doing, you can do it respectably in a Cobra Mk III and nobody will give you shit for it. Cobras are workhorses that you can build an empire off the back of, with only the Python and the Anaconda laying on the road ahead of it. The most important function of the Cobra is as a competent mission runner for giving its pilot the opportunity to build up reputation and a wallet for whatever may come next.

The cobra was my first and only combat ship, and the only one I'm not willing to sell. I once got a contract to take down a Fer De Lance, and initially tried to take it down with a fully equipped Keelback and a ship launched fighter, but it was shot down. I decided to try again in a cobra, and was able to do it. (3 system authority vessels popped in to help me at the end, but I was on track to win the fight anyway)

Cobra Mk 3 is the ship I enjoy most out of all so far. Especially after engineering the shit out of mine. Forget the weak shield, u can armortank the shit out of it while still having descent jumprange, top speed, a vehicle hangar and some serious punch for it's size. My Krait can do the same, just better, yes. But it cant compete with the joy of flying that little nimble bugger of a cobra.

How I see it . You can get 2 ships ; a viper or eagle then get a hauler . Or , get 1 ship that can do both jobs . Get the Cobra. Like the sidewinder it s got weak shields so you will have to upgrade the hull like crazy for combat and strip it down as far as you can without sacrificing over the top . I use it like I used the sidewinder , except the cobra will do it all way better

  • @FlameSoulis

The Cobra... it was my first mining ship. I have two: my first mining ship (bless that bastard, still haven't gotten ganked) and the other for bounty hunting. I may love flying the Eagle for random thrills, but the Cobra gets stuff done. Need to mine early and decently? It can handle it. Need to make things go boom? It can do that. The Cobra is the Sidewinder that eat its vegetables and grew up. It just feels like a direct upgrade, because like the Sidewinder, it's able to do anything.

For quite a while i was addicted to elite dangerous.
Went through the motions, got the cob mk3, loved it, used for ages, then went to python, loved that, used it for ages.
Eventually i got the conda, big brick of a ship!
Made loads of creds with it, then got the corvette!
Months later there was only one other ship i wanted, the cutter.
Eventually after a long long grind, i got one, did a few missions, then lost all reason for playing elite dangerous!!
    Just couldnt be bothered anymore.
Not touched it in about a year.
Ur vids sort of make me wanna play again, but i know if i do, i wont get to play any other games!!

Like you said, the Cobra 3 was the 'first real ship I bought' and that's absolutely right, I did just about everything with my cobra and remember it fondly, small cargo missions? check, combat? check, some exploration, check, hauling whining biowaste to their vacation destination? check. And as you said, I bought it as a cheap ship and had to scrimp and save to earn every upgrade, which made the process a great growing experience and helped me learn the game.
    Love my cobra.

The Cobra was my second ship purchase after the Eagle, and it was the purchase that got me to sell my Sidewinder. Every friend I know who starts this game, I give them the same advice. "Do stuff in the starting systems until you feel comfortable with doing as many different things as you want to learn. Then turn in your Sidewinder and buy a Cobra before you leave."

Being a new player who is currently flying a Cobra till I have the money to outfit a Keelback, I agree with so much of this. It's been a lot of fun slowly outfitting my mk3 as the credits roll in. Mine is currently set up for some bounty hunting and smaller cargo runs (just realized I can make like 500k moving 22T of whatever from boom system missions)

I still like my Cobra, I don't use it for a lot, but it still has a niche with me for smuggling, base assaults, ground based data scans, courier runs and small salvage missions. Mine is fully engineered, I don't use it often to engage in combat, but as a cooler running stealth ship with a good boost speed and fast recharging shields if I get in a pinch.

The Cobra MkIII is the pony car of ships. Cheap and sporty, lots of fun to fly.
Also, there are a few cases where B rated modules are better than A. For example, extra shield cell, longer collector limpet range, a B class fuel scoop of a larger size is much better and cheaper than the A rank one size down. Plus, in Colonia, sometimes you're ecstatic to get a B rank module, as an A is a pipe dream. The least used rank is class C modules... normally it's better to just sit with a light weight D rank module rather than upgrade to just a C.

I traded my Hauler for a Cobra with the intent of then moving on to a Python. Having played with a few builds in the shipyard tools... I may not move on from this ship. I have enough cargo space, some passenger space, extra fuel... once I get a better controller setup and learn how to fly properly this thing will be a wicked little smuggler. Do the engineering right and I'll skate around without a care, making a couple mil per trip.
