NAP HELLRAZOR: Broadhead Test

- This is a test of the 100 gr HELLRAZOR by NAP.
Here is summary of my 2024 Testing Procedure & Scoring w/the scores of this head posted in parenthesis as well.
1. Flight Forgiveness (20%, 18 pts)
I'm using a Killer Instinct SWAT X1 crossbow, mounted to a BOG tripod, shooting a 670 gr Bishop Archery GOAT bolt (300 fps) at 30 yds. Field points consistently hit in the 10 ring & bullseye. I use the exact same bolt to shoot the broadhead. The only difference in the two shots is the broadhead's flight forgiveness vs that of the field point. A bullseye gets a score of 11/10, or a perfect score of 20 + 1 Bonus Point. The 10 ring gets a 10/10, or 20 points; a 9 ring gets a 9/10 or 18 points...& so forth, with each wider ring being 1/2" farther from the bullseye. Mechs are also given 1 Bonus Point for extra forgiveness.
2. Cut Size (20%, 12.84 pts)
The more tissue being cut, the more lethal the head, all else equal. The entrance cut, total cut, & width of the cut (a crucial variable for bloodletting) are all scored:
The entrance cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" then that fraction is weighted to 7% of the score. (1.69” = 4.73 points pts)
The max cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" as well, then that fraction is is weighted to 7% of the score. (1.69” = 4.73 pts)
The max cutting diameter is compared to a standard of 2.0", then that fraction is weighted to 6% of the score. (1.125" = 3.38 pts)
3. Blades (20%, 16.8 pts)
Initial sharpness (9%, 435 grams = 7.65/10 = 6.9 pts) & Edge Retention (9%, +62 grams = 8.76/10 = 7.9 pts) are measured using the Edge On Up Sharpness Tester. The pressure needed for a blade to cut thru a copolymer wire is measured in grams.
Edge Retention is the loss of sharpness after the head is shot in Penetration Test 1, thru 1/2" MDF & 2/3" rubber foam mat & Clear Ballistics FBI gel. For every 50 "grams" of sharpness lost, 1 point is deducted from 10.
What are some sharpness scores for common edges?
A butter knife takes 2000 grams of pressure to break the co polymer wire.
A new high end cutlery edge: ~ 375 grams of pressure.
A utility razor blade: 200 grams.
Based on the many broadheads I have tested, here is my scoring scale:
Out of the Box Sharpness:
0-200 gr: 10
201-300 gr 9
301-400 gr: 8
401-500 gr: 7
501-600 gr: 6
601-700 gr: 5
Ease to resharpen or replace blades is judged & given 2% of the score. (10/10=2 pts)
4. Penetration (20%, 17.43 pts)
There are 2 penetration tests:
Pen Test 1: 1/2" MDF, 2/3" rubber foam mat, Clear Ballistics FBI gel. Depth of penetration is compared to a standard of 9" & weighted to 10% of the score. (8.75" = 9.72 pts)
Pen Test 2: Layered cardboard. # of layers penetrated is compared to a standard of 70 layers & weighted to 10% of the score.
( 54 layers= 7.71 pts)
5. Durability (20%, 19.3 pts)
Each head is shot thru 1/2" MDF 3 times. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 12% of the score. (10/10 = 12 pts)
If a head survives that, it is then shot thru 22 ga steel plate twice. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 5% of the score. (9.5/10 =4.5 pts)
If a head survives that, it is then shot into concrete once. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 3% of the score. (8.5/10 = 2.55 pts).
Steel plate & concrete are certainly not "realistic" mediums, but they do reveal the outer limits of a head's durability.
BONUS: 0 pts
TOTAL SCORE: 84.37 pts = 8 Golden Arrows
Price: $13.33/head

These are affordable, great performing broadheads. If you spend a little time to sharpen them, you have an excellent hunting broadhead. You can buy 2 packs of these for the price of 1 pack of premium name brand broadheads.
Yep.
One of my favorite broadheads!
Nice
Holy crap that did better than I thought it would! That's awesome
Yep.
😮😮😮 WOW!! Other than sharpness out of the box, it’s pretty dang good. Great testing John. 👊🏻
Thank you
Thanks John! I absolutely love your videos. These things will get really sharp with fine sandpaper progression, and then on a leather strop. I have not but great success with these!
Yep.
Thanks for the testing this is a broadhead i have been looking at , right now i'm using thunderheads which i like and work well they are tough also
Thanks
Wow, might have to grab a few of these. They did great
Yep
John, love the videos and the new testing protocol. The addition of the crossbow is a very cool idea. I’d like to see a crossbow video where you revisit some of the favorites/high scorers from the past like the Exodus, Iron Will, Tooth of the Arrow, SEVR, etc. and simply shoot them out of the crossbow a couple times each or something, maybe at different distances, against the control field point. I think that would be an interesting piece to add to the previous data. Not sure anyone has done that before.
Thanks Mike
Surprised that those thin wings held up! Another great test 👌
Yep.
I’m really enjoying the addition of the crossbow for accuracy testing.
Thank you
Yep! Mighty tough head. A little touch up on the cutting edges is all it needs. 👍👍
Yep.
I've killed dozens of deer and few elk them. Frontal shot on a bull at 36 yards. Arrow was phusing out the hide on the rear quarter. Buddy killed a bulk moose with one. 72 yard quartering away shot...hit it in the flank and broadhead was stuck in sternum. I believe when they first came out they were made in the USA and were in a black package with a bull elk on it...but I've heard they're now made in China. The older ones also seem sharper out of the box and had a slightly different design but these and the hellrazor are my go to broadheads. Nap has some Jenky archery products out there but their broadheads have always been good.
Thanks for sharing that.
It would be great to see a video where you use your new sharpness scale and change the blade angle on that style broadhead and show the results. Thanks for the videos
I agree
Yeah, I need to do that. Innovative Outdoorsman has a lot of those videos--that's the channel for Stay Sharp Guide.
Great test John, wondering if you had to align the blades with the vanes for the cross bow flight test.?
Nope
Killed a few deer and a hog with them. They are good solid heads overall. Thanks for testing them! The ones I have are 125 grn and are reinforced in the middle instead of having those odd looking fins on the inside?
Thanks
That’s a very good number for the gel test.
Yep.
I've done some testing with these. I found they are pretty durable. However, I found the are very picky on arrow shaft as far as accuracy goes. Also, I think they are kinda loud in flight.
Thanks for sharing that.
Its interesting that i think all of the heads you tested this year shot to the right from the field point with the crossbow. I wonder if the arrow flight from that thing is not very straight, have you tried shooting an unfletched bolt through paper with that crossbow?
No, you've only seen a few out of the 25 I've tested and the hundreds of shots I've taken. Even the Fire N the Hole, posted last week, flew high left. Even looking over my pics: About the same percentage are high center, low center, right, or left.
Totally forgot to mention that these things zip through deer shoulders like hot butter!
I can imagine that.
I shoot the NAP HELLRAZOR out of my V3X 29 they fly great and i always get a pass through. But you should sharpen them out of the box
Most brands need sharpening out of box.
@@caseysmith544I have not found one that didn't!
@@kurtglo Sorry I was referring to brands with non replaceable blades. Most of the Non replaceable heads need to be sharpened with only a few exceptions.
Thanks
I’m either going to run these this year or the nap meat freak but probably these
I'm testing those in the months ahead.
Do you not have your discount code for dead x bowhunting anymore?
Ya know, I've tried contacting them but haven't heard back. You can still try the one I used to have. It's on the video test of their heads. Since the owner died, I haven't been able to communicate with them as easily.
@LuskArcheryAdventures I just tried the old discount code and it still work's can't wait to try one of there heads out on a turkey here in Missouri this coming season
Did anyone else have poor blood trails with these?
Might have to do with them being dull as hell
Sharpen them
@@colecathcart8572 absolutely true. I feel like I shouldn't have to sharpen a new broadhead from the factory. The only head from NAP I liked was the thunderheads. But that's just mho
@@DIRTISTERRIBLEThe Iron Will fan boys sharpen them when they get them, these are not dull, just a different angle then the thin bladed heads. I can kill a squierel , get down, pull the arrow out of the dirt, and re-sharpen it while in the tree.
no more and no less then any other head I have used, Elk went 75 yards and fell over, never looked for a blood trail
