  • This is a test of the 100 gr NAP Ignite 4, four blade broadhead.
    Here is summary of my 2023 Testing Procedure & Scoring w/the scores of this head posted in parenthesis as well.
    Ignite 4 Total Score: 71.0 = 7 Golden Arrows
    1. Flight Forgiveness (20%, 14 pts)
    This is not just a test of how heads fly out of my bow, as it was in the past. With a well tuned bow, properly built arrows & good form, almost every head flies well. That's why in the past most heads got a flight score of 9 or 10. But that doesn't help those who may not have perfectly tuned bows/arrows/good form. So now I am gauging Flight Forgiveness. This is based on how the head flies for me, how well it spins, how "sensitive" the flight is to imperfections, & the exposed surface area of the blades. The max score of a Mech is 20 & the max score of a Fixed is 16.
    2. Cut Size (20%, 15.11 pts)
    The more tissue being cut, the more lethal the head, all else equal. The entrance cut, total cut, & width of the cut (a crucial variable for bloodletting) are all scored:
    The entrance cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" then that fraction is weighted to 7% of the score. (2.06"" = 5.77 pts)
    The max cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" as well, then that fraction is is weighted to 7% of the score. (2.06" = 5.77 pts)
    The max cutting diameter is compared to a standard of 2.0", then that fraction is weighted to 6% of the score. (1.19" = 3.57 pts)
    3. Blades (20%, 10.65 pts)
    Initial sharpness (9%, 550 grams = 6.5/10 = 5.85 pts) & Edge Retention (9%, +300 gram = 4/10 = 3.6 pts) are measured using the Edge On Up Sharpness Tester. The pressure needed for a blade to cut thru a copolymer wire is measured in grams.
    Edge Retention is the loss of sharpness after the head is shot in Penetration Test 1, thru 1/2" MDF and 2/3" rubber foam mat & Clear Ballistics FBI gel. For every 50 "grams" of sharpness lost, 1 point is deducted from 10.
    What are some sharpness scores for common edges?
    A butter knife takes 2000 grams of pressure to break the co polymer wire.
    A new high end cutlery edge: ~ 375 grams of pressure.
    A utility razor blade: 200 grams.
    Based on the many broadheads I have tested, here is my scoring scale:
    Out of the Box Sharpness:
    0-200 gr: 10
    201-300 gr 9
    301-400 gr: 8
    401-500 gr: 7
    501-600 gr: 6
    601-700 gr: 5
    Ease to resharpen or replace blades is judged & given 2% of the score. (6/10= 1.2 pts)
    4. Penetration (20%, 16.44 pts)
    There are 3 penetration tests:
    Pen Test 1: 1/2" MDF, 2/3" rubber foam mat, Clear Ballistics FBI gel. Depth of penetration is compared to a standard of 9" & weighted to 9% of the score. (7.5" = 7.5 pts)
    Pen Test 2: Layered cardboard. # of layers penetrated is compared to a standard of 70 layers & weighted to 9% of the score.
    (54 layers=6.94 pts)
    Angled Penetration Test: How effectively does the head penetrate 1/4" MDF covered by carpet at a 45 degree angle. This accounts for 2% of the score. (10/10 = 2 pts)
    5. Durability (20%, 15.8 pts)
    Each head is shot thru 1/2" MDF 3 times. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 12% of the score. (9.5/10 = 11.4 pts)
    If a head survives that, it is then shot thru 22 ga steel plate twice. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 5% of the score. (4/10 = 2 pts)
    If a head survives that, it is then shot into concrete once. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 3% of the score. (8/10 = 2.4 pts)
    Steel plate & concrete are certainly not "realistic" mediums, but they do reveal the outer limits of a head's durability.
    BONUS: -1 weak blade locking system
    Total Ignite 4 100 gr SCORE: 71.0 pts = 7 Golden Arrows
    Price: $13.33/head

    Great vid John!! Have always been a NAP fan from the 90’s and was really hoping that it would perform well. The most shocking thing for me was the dull blade sharpness. I know years ago that NAP had some of the sharpest blades out there and it’s disappointing to hear they’ve slacked on this. I have killed everything from elk to hogs with thunderheads with no problems and blades were always so sharp. NAP get this right again!!

    Thanks again for your service to the community. Just responded in last video about a microadjust rest and a standard number of clicks to test "forgiveness" of the head from an out-of-tune bow or a torqued grip, regardless of having a hooter shooter or not. That way you have a tangible and mathematical flight forgiveness score and that good comparative data you talked about in the intro of this video.

      That's a good idea. But I've found that in un tuned bows, some heads fly great and some fly terribly--and it's not consistent from one untuned bow to another.

    Blades falling out reminds me of a lot of original replaceable blade broadheads when they first came out back in the late 70's, early 80's. You would be walking thru the woods, pull an arrow out of your quiver, and the replaceable blades would be GONE. I think some broadheads are designed to look cool to sell, but not so much for function. Typically, many monolithic or traditional style broadheads are not designed to be hunted with straight out of the package, but most replaceable blade broadheads are. Surprisingly dull blades from NAP. Many mechanical blades are dull as well. The small broadhead sharpeners made by Allen or Lansky work quite well to touch up replaceable blades. It is best to take the blades off the broadhead and hold the blade with a pair of pliers while stroking it lightly with the sharpener. If not, it is difficult to sharpen the blade edge its entire length up close to the ferrule. Thanks for sharing!

    It is remarkable how a broadhead company can put so little effort into blade sharpness. Based on your recommendation and videos from Innovative Outdoorsman, I use the stay sharp guide in order to attain a high degree of sharpness on my broadheads. Arrows kill by hemorrhage - the broadhead has to cut stuff to achieve it. Thank you for an excellent testing regime.

    I'd try it if they made a 125grain, I like the slick trick viper tricks, I wish slick trick would make the wicked trick in a 125 grain, I've emailed them before and asked them to but I'm just some guy. Hopefully other people want that too and they can make it happen. I'd love to try one of those kayuga heads but i think they're made overseas and Im trying to keep it all American if i can help it. As always you have great insight and attention to detail, Thanks John

    It was surprising how dull these blades were, but it brings up a good idea. What if you took a cut on contact broadhead and ran it through your ballistic gel and cardboard layer test at 500/250/150 grams of force sharpness? It'd be a test of sharpness's value. Thanks for all you do.

      That's a great observation. I've tested that as well. I used 2, 2 blade heads. Dulled one with a file and sharpened the other--the penetration was almost the same with every medium. At compound speeds, heads "push" a lot more than "cut"--unlike what most think.

      I put one out at the end of each year; it's usually the last video of each year. I just finished making an excel spreadsheet of all the heads from 2022-2023. I can't do it before that because the testing has changed. I will post that toward the end of December.

    COMPARATIVE DATA! Exactly! It's literally science, as best as you can perform it, controlling as many variables as you can. Yet the most vocal "heavy arrow" influencer in archery, who says they're all about the "science", mocks your approach every chance he gets, but does seem rather ignorant of actual science.

    • @YoureSoVane

      The penetration tests all suck. They're consistently measurable but not representative. Friction is a bigger factor in the gel than in animals, and the cardboard is surprisingly tough on blades compared to soft tissue.
      Consistent? Sure. Good? Even Lusk admits they're not perfect but there's no affordable alternative. Nobody has an affordable alternative without using hogs as targets. There's always variables with shot placement and animal movement, and that matters more to some people than representative friction, hardness, and density of the target.

    • @quintonb9870
      @quintonb9870 7 місяців тому +2

      @@YoureSoVane I'm not sure I get your point? Yes, we're all aware animals aren't made of cardboard or bricks, again it's comparative data. Comparing broadhead to broadhead. That's it.

    • @YoureSoVane
      @YoureSoVane 7 місяців тому +1

      @@quintonb9870 This is my biggest gripe against Ranch Fairy: he can't explain anything to save his life.
      When comparing broadheads in a penetration test, a broadhead that does better in gel might do worse in an animal and vice versa. That's why he says it doesn't matter. It's like ranking politicians based on who's taller--yes it's comparative but it isn't relevant to issue at hand.
      Surface area plays a huge role in friction and that's a bigger factor in gel than an animal. So a massive broadhead that looks like a spear might do terribly in gel but great in an animal simply because of the surface area creating excess friction. Meanwhile a broadhead that has much less surface area will do better in gel even if it's worse in an animal.
      Sure it's comparative date, but it's not relevant data. It doesn't mean much.

    • @quintonb9870
      @quintonb9870 7 місяців тому +2

      @@YoureSoVane Doesn't mean much? If you see a broadhead break a blade on the first layer or two of cardboard and one that remains intact and sharp, which one would you prefer to use? If a broadhead gets completely mangled when shooting a brick and one doesn't, which one would you prefer? If a broadhead loses it's edge after shooting through particle board, metal, whatever, and a different one maintains it's sharpness, which one would you prefer? You seem fixated on the ballistics gel; no one is saying it's a proper analog to an animal. I don't put much stock in gel testing, but it's one small part of a larger battery of tests.
      If one is "all about the science" then a person would be testing all available options , not just the things they believe will work. That's the whole point of science. When is the last time you watched the ranch fairy shoot a hog with a 350g arrow with an off the shelf fixed blade travelling at 280-300+ fps for testing? I don't personally hunt with something anywhere near that light, but if you want to test what works and what doesn't you need to test everything. The goal is to disprove your own beliefs.

    • @YoureSoVane
      @YoureSoVane 7 місяців тому +1

      @@quintonb9870 And here's where I agree with you and Lusk's testing. The durability testing is fair and representative. No part of it is meant to be an exact replica of an animal, it's just meant to see how well it survives bad shots or tough targets. Where would each one break and how?
      I don't think anyone argues against the process or idea of science. I also don't claim that Ranch Fairy is all about the science. I claim that about myself, which is why I have a LabRadar and I test things I do and don't like. I also try to find errors in my test procedures and see if my data even means anything or is consistent shot to shot. One day to the next the same arrow will have different speeds at the target because of variables I can't control and variation due to myself as the shooter.
      I'm not saying any of the other testing is bad. I'm not saying comparative testing is bad. I'm saying penetration testing isn't representative of performance in an animal. I'm also saying that accurate target media would be illegal or incredibly expensive, so we don't have a lot of options. That's why I don't care about penetration testing in homogenous media.
