BMW E31 - AT LONG LAST THE FRONT END IS FIXED! REUSUABLE 2K CLEARCOAT!

  • My lower csi spoiler on my BMW 840ci looks perfect! It's been looking awful for years but as it is near the ground I've studiously ignored it. The fix is to flatten the surface and then spray with 2K clear-coat. The trouble is that 2K clear-coat starts hardening in the aerosol after the first use and that is so wasteful.
But, I've found re-useable clearcoat that actually mixes as it comes out of the tin. This is a simple job with high reward - let's get on with it!

A bit unrelated to your actual post mate but just have to say I have been watching you posts and videos on various forums and now UA-cam for what must be 15 years and your tinassity and the "every day bloke" approach is wonderfull. Please keep the E31 going and maybe have a go at your headlining as a lot of us suffer from this problem
    Thanks again

Thanks Tony - it's been years hasn't it! I will give the headlining a go when it warms up a bit - I've got the material ready!

Be careful there is a paint company selling a "2k" that is not actually 2k.
2k always has to have a hardener mix.

Hi Timm, the 2K clear looks like a good discovery for the DIY'er. Serious damage to the CSi spoiler is the reason I took my car off the road and kicked off my 8 series restoration project in the first place. That seems so long ago now.

@@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformationI have been trying to recall the last time I drove it. I can remember the straw that broke the camel's back as far as the front spoiler goes, it was a stone in a Curry's/PC World car park! As to when, think it had to be about 7 years ago now. Time flies when you're (not) having fun.

So clear coat only no colour required? But crikey - I'm glad you could still get those OEM after baking!

You are not wrong there! I didn't need body colour - but it can be bought on Ebay (I've used it a few times).

Timm thanks for your content. Ive been planning a restoration of my father in laws quite special 840ci sport individual with a zeemax bodykit for a while and the time has now come. Wondering, would you still recommend the bodyshop that did yours for rust work and respeay?

Thanks! They are an OEM option in 1999 (free at the time of ordering), they were disconnected a long time ago, but they do turn up on Ebay now and again.

Hay Tim, you are the only one I think who replies this is regarding your 650ci now roughly Frankfurt is level weather wise with UK and I think you follow sreten on M539 channel so in his opinion the liquid molly 10/60 oil is better for high milage bmw's which mine is 650ci auto sport at 132.000 I would very much appreciate your opinion T.I.A

Sreten's advice is good, Liquid Moly is an excellent oil. But I use 0W30 Castrol fully synthetic as it reduces the valve noise on overrun
