I was the same, wanted the Large Blue Dial Santos or Speedmaster, I went for the Speedmaster in the end and got the bracelet and Fabric Bracelet to alternate
Thomas: Great video. Your version of "value retention" is a smart approach to collecting for almost everybody. Work hard, buy a great watch, enjoy it AND, if you have to sell it, break even (or maybe even realize a slight profit). The selection of watches fits this sane approach to collecting, and shows that it can be done at a wide range of price points. Fantastic content. One minor point: the new Alpinists are pretty amazing.
as a Speedy owner, I love the Santos for it's look, history and bracelet. However, my most recent "value retention" move was to sell my SARB033 for a tidy profit and upgrade to the much rarer and pricier SARB045.
Everyone has to go through difficult times at some point. The point here is that you can afford easily a watch at some point and have the need for liquidity in the future for any reason. Having something that expensive that holds its value is pretty enjoyable as it is still representing a lot of money for more than 90% pf the people
Great Vid. Thank you. Some others to consider , budget friendly, Heuer Carrera CS3110, Seiko SARB033, Universal Geneve Polarouter, Omega Seamaster 300 ref. 2254, Glycine airman No1 36mm, amazing, classic, iconic watches that holds value pretty well for each category chrono, everyday, vintage, diver, GMT part of my personal collection
I could have purchased a Santos 2 years ago for $5,800. I bought a Tudor BB58 instead. Still have the BB58, which helped me get the opportunity to but a Submariner from the AD.
Refreshing, to see a video featuring watches that are attainable by the average collector. It is frustrating to be offered countless videos about watches that are available to only the “investors “. Would love to see more! Thanks
The SARB017 is 39.5mm, but it's still a great size, that wears smaller than one might think, especially on strap. I personally love my blue SPB089 variant, which is well north of the $600 MSRP I paid, but that is because only 1,959 were made. I'm glad you included it on your list, which was unexpected. The Speedmaster price now vs. then price almost makes me want to shed a tear, but I didn't have the money to even consider one back then.

I am between Santos and Speedmaster, but probably I will go with Santos. The first wristwatch ever. I think you missed the fist ever automatic chronograph from Rolex group. The famous Big Block or their last generation with some of them known as the Tigers (it is the year of the tiger). Like Daytonas but more affordable (at the moment) and with a nice history behind.
Watches shouldn’t be seen as investments. If you want to invest in something invest in real estate, the stock market or a business. You will make a lot more money. That said, buy what you like, try not to overpay and hold onto it and pass it to your kids. A good quality watch will hold some of its value in case you go belly up, but your purchase should not be based on that.
Tons of watches' price went off the chart due to big inflation since 2020. For example, glycine airman d-c4. This is pre Invicta model that 2 years ago you can get one for sub 400 dollars in gray market. Since then it is sold out everywhere and price went beyond 1000 dollars used. Watches didn't double the price with 3 years is not worth mentioning.
Thanks for the great videos. Have a question for you: Is it better to own a Longines solid gold watch (elegant collection) or an Omega De Ville (stainelss steel) for roughly the same price? Which one holds its value? Really appreciate your answer.
Thanks for the video, great insights. My favourite is the Santos as well and it's on my 'to-buy' list. Hope I get one soon and be able to experience it, later review it as well 😉

Thank you Ceda! If you check it in the chrono24 watch collection, you can see that the price went up from circa $7,500 to $9,200 within the last three years. Not a bad performance i would say! Cheers
Great video content without bringing up the out of control big 3. Even when the markets level back off the small break evens are great. Like bond funds for the stock market.
Nope, it's a watch. If you want to invest - there are stock markets, real estate etc. Buy what you really want, enjoy it. If you are happy you will make much more money. The life is too short and what is the point everyone to wear Rolex, Santos or Speedy. Come on, people. Don't ruin your true desire because you want something and this will loose value. If you follow that "investment" logic soon you will wear second hand clothes and eat only junk food.
