I had the 991.2 as manual and now the 992 as automatic. Manual transmission is nice if you occasionally drive the car in a sporty manner, but for daily use, especially in city traffic with stop and go, the PDK version is more comfortable.

Highly unusual for the 4L NA, this unit has been the power plant for the 991.2 GT3, GT3 Touring GT3 RS, 992 GT3, 992 GT3 Touring, 992 GT3 RS and S/T, 718 Spyder RS and GT4 RS - its a genuine race engine that is also used in the Cup Cars. Its also in the recently released 992.2 GT3. Hate to say it, but you have been unlucky or your car has a back story to it e.g. it may have been rear ended or damaged in some other way.
Honestly approaching good time to get into a 991.1 GT3 also assuming you take the time to get one with a G6 revision engine. The 10 year warranty extension are approaching the end so the prices will certainly soften some. Considering the price difference at least here in the states the 991.1 is pretty appealing.
@@Nord_Mann 991 is the same weight as the 992.1 and has the double wishbone front which, for me, is a total game changer. Excellent review, 991.2 GT3, GT3 Touring and GT3 RS are some the best Porsche have ever made - much more interesting and much more character than the 992. The 991.2 has the 4L and has proven to be bullet proof, it is the same engine with minor tweaks that is found in the 992.1 S/T, GT3, GT3 RS in slightly different states of tune. Also no OPF filters.
@JayEmmOnCars thank you so much for this brilliant video. Having recently escaped from a Lotus Emira I have just started a frankly bewildering journey into the world of Porsche. It's videos like this that really help lift the 911 991 dot whatever fog. 😊
Nice to see my ‘old’ car still going strong. Sold just at the wrong time before the prices shot up🙁 I presume your friend James is the 3rd owner as I sold it at the end of 2019 ‘pre-covid’ …
as a 991 and 992 driver, i can attest that what he says at 14:10 is the absolute truth. 992: much bigger numbers, but doesn't feel right. 991 feels so much more alive.
Not is USA. The dealers frequently ‘overlook’ obvious damage during pre-owned inspections and markups are insane. +$250,000 USD markup was not uncommon for a great drives car valued significantly less. I’ve experienced this several times from multiple dealerships: “how much are you willing to pay?” Porsche USA choosing to partner with car flippers and not actual drivers is a common trend. My proposal is to raise MSRP and then to not allow dealership markups to eliminate the issue.
You don't always have to pay ADM.... those Taycan's ain't gonna sell themselves! I reckon a new electric Macan Turbo and Taycan Turbo in your purchae history and you'll be right up in the top 50 in line for a GT allocation
@@melondoc And then you see how much money you lost on those two cars...so you could have just payed the mark up of that GT3 and don't bother with the purchase of Taycan/Macan.

Solid review…get a Mezger engine earlier version…in a manual…stay away from the Italiano basket cases, the 3rd rate Deutsche detonation rigs, the Pommie garbage tips & enjoy the car knowing you are not likely going to need a truck to get you home (ask me how I know this).
In Europe at least, all that people were waiting for was for automatics to get good. Once automatics started to come with more gears, lock up torque converters and faster changes, it was all over for manuals for most people.
There is a GT3 Touring on Collecting Cars “coming soon”… I showed it to my wife asking how much she thought it was, choosing from £80k / £180k or £280k. She sniggered and said… “80k obviously… it’s a little boring to look at”… therein another issue for the brand…. It’s done an “Audi” and for most punters, there is little visible difference between mundane and exotic… 🤨
A Porsche rev range report may be a key to understanding some of manual GT3 unusual price tags. Many of those were money shifted at some point in life 😢 Very expensive to undo.
I personally think the PDK is more fun for a few reasons. 1) shorter gears. I get to go up and down and up and down none stop thru the gears with PDK a lot more often than manual. Your complain on going to jail due to tall gears is even more prevalent in the manual. 2) The horsepower wars in car industry since 2015 era has really kicked off. The manual just feels slow to me. These cars are still ridiculously fast but a lot of it does come from not losing torque for that split second during shifts. With PDK this fully naturally aspirated beauty of an engine still competes even in straight line against your much higher than 500hp+ counter parts which feels gratifying to me.
I have to admit, I was 100% in the "manual or nothing" camp until I drove a Porsche with a PDK. I never knew an automatic transmission could actually be just as fun and exciting as a manual. If only budget allowed me to have one of each!
Street driving = pdk. Track = pdk. No reason to get manual in this car, it's not made for it. With flat up shifting and blip down shifting, it's not much different from a slow sequential box.
In gear accel (and thus the force you feel) is slightly quicker for the manual due to less losses and lower weight. What you gain in gear you lose during the shifts, but it certainly doesn't feel slower and in fact 60-130 times are identical or slightly in the manual's favor.
Love Your vids man! I know it’s not really your thing, but it’d be great to see you on track with something like these (if the kind people are happy for you to do so) not every car or every vid and yes I could go to auto trader to watch them, but it’d still be cool!
Great video! I tried to buy that car from East London back in the summer, damn your friend! (PS - it was to replace an idenical car another London dealer brought back with premature engine failure)
I recently visited my dealer and wished to order a GT car. They told me I needed to buy a new panamera, Macan EV and a Turbo Taycan before they would consider putting me on a list for a new GT3.
Quite possibly one of the ultimate 911's BUT! Way beyond my means and I've been infected with the "mid engine madness" soooo if I could find some extra $ I'd go after a 981 GTS. In the meantime I'll enjoy my 08 987.1 base 5spd. 🤠
Haven't seen too many be dogged in Japan outside of specialized clubs like Idlers club but this has to be the better sounding GT3 with the selection of aftermarket exhausts present
Interesting about the engine problems. I have a 991.2 Carrera T. Had to have both turbos replaced, luckily for me it was still under warranty. I wouldn't have it without a warranty. I do love it though.....

I just gave up on the dealers. It’s a game I won’t play having to be in the allocation club buying what I don’t want and losing money just for a “chance” to buy what I do. I showed up once to a CA dealer with cash for a certain 991 I wanted and left being told they weren’t interested. They didn’t even take my name. Only way to go is PP used.
I understand the RS with the faster pdk shifts were more likely to spit a cam shim out, which could work its way to the oil pump and cause engine damage due to low oil pressure. 991.2 engine while not foolproof is pretty solid, on the whole. Re gearboxes, i think the manual is stillmthe slightly more expensive option. Gt3's are very spec sensitive, no front lift and they struggle to sell.
I drove old mercedes diesels most of my life. Then I came upon a somewhat neglected 88 MR2 Supercharged, fixed it up, and finally realized what I've been missing. I still have it, and also have an S2000 Honda. Although a 991 may be 10 years out for me, a 997 may be a test drive away from being in my garage.
I drove old bangers most of my life, then, in 2014 I came into a huge chunk of money (I won't bore you but no, I didn't win the lottery) and I literally swapped a Peugeot 106 out for a Rolls Royce Ghost. Since then I have indeed owned many types of cars but for me there is nothing that comes close to the experience of driving a Rolls Royce.
@ I still have my 79 w116 s-class as my daily driver. Even though I only paid $8k for it years ago, it always had me felling comfortable wherever I go, and whenever I get there. Saying that, I can’t imagine how nice a ride your Ghost would be.
Ah, I wish the same thing would apply in Indonesia, 991.2 GT3s are my absolute favourite 911. Sadly only 4 991.2 GT3s remained here. Many others had been re-exported because they arrived without any sort of legal papers. Something Porsche Indonesia learned the hard way back in 2018.
I applaud those who continue to try and enjoy cars like this in the UK, but in reality unless you can go to tracks or areas such as the remote parts of the Pyrenees fairly regularly it must be painfully frustrating. It is essentially impossible to really enjoy them more than a few corners at a time unless you are not particularly fond of your driving license.
Porsche is the only manufacturer that can have cars literally catching on fire, multiple generations with catastrophic engine failure, and can still be considered the greatest manufacturer of all time. And that’s coming from someone with multiple in the garage! Brilliant marketing for sure!
Be careful with that statement.. Porsche sold 320,000 cars last year but it looks like they might not even make 300,000 this year, and if that happens it means Porsche sold 54 less cars every day in 2024 than they did in 2023. 👈 That's No bueno.

Yes and they did something to ensure that when Italians ( especially Alfa Romeo) do said thing, every journalist worth his salt, repeatedly tells us how unreliable Italian cars are and not to buy them. Imagine if Alfas had IMS or bore scoring ?😮
If you hold these “incidents” up against the number of Porsche GT cars produced and their mileage and use, I think you can safely say that these are very well build and reliable cars.
I’ve driven an 812 without front plate for 2 years now, passed many police, never been stopped. I have to assume they simply don’t have the resources. I am in Warwickshire, not sure about London and other areas?
Even if they pull you it’s a £100 fine no points. £100 is not the end of the world for a lot of people who drive Supercars and like the no front plate look….. so I’m told!! 😅
991.1 RS has a different engine to a 991.2 GT3. The 991.1 RS has a revised 991.1 GT3 engine, with some internal fixes and a lowered Rev limit to 8600 rpm. And yes some 991.1 RS have had some issues, primarily if the oil isn’t replaced within 10,000 Km’s Max/ the specification of said oil isn’t 100% correct and poor fuel quality issues. But both issues can be mitigated 😌
I had one for just over ten years. Depending where you live but in town or heavy traffic the clutch definitely gave me “clutch leg”! Also my wife hated the very harsh ride. Go for front lift as speed bumps and awkward gradients will become very expensive. I never jelled with the manual gearbox, found it over notchy and easy to over rev unless you’re extra careful. Great as a track car but if you want it for the road buy a Turbo.
@hpman911 that's some awesome feedback. Sounds like I won't be driving this on leg day then 😅. I'm definitely looking at comfort spec and the wife knows it will be a car just for me so if she doesn't like the ride she can go in her car 😂. With those negatives out the way, you had it for over ten years, what were some of the things you loved about it?
@ fantastic style and soundtrack. Very impressive on the track with brilliant handling and roadholding but as I said be careful you don’t miss a gear and over rev. I also went for the comfort spec so you can use the rear well for luggage etc on long road trips. It’s becoming a classic so you shouldn’t lose money after purchasing !
I like the car and the nod to the classic BRM cars, but it was a strange tie-up. You have to be really ancient and an ardent Le Mans enthusiast to remember the Rover-BRM turbine car, I'm probably both, but I was only six at the time.
Porsche 991.1S owner and Porsche fan;but; there's no way i'm paying what they're asking today...im simply looking elsewhere for that money. There's just too much out there for similar money. A used (insert?) AMG gtr or a used 911 s ?
The worst thing about owning a Porsche is the absulute purifyingly bad service... Porsches front office is the best place to leave a turd.. Thank God there are many specialist shops out there where Porsche lovers/admirers who know as much more about your Porsche as the Porsche engineers know it themselves.. IF the Engineers of Porsche could just ditch the front office, altogether..
A 4 seater Porsche GT3? Now you tell me. How exactly does that work, by putting the engine a metre behind the rear axle? Tell me, James, is the gearbox a little like the curates egg? And, it did look as if you shifted late into 3rd and ended up in Andorra?
If you want the noise from 2,000 RPMs all the way to 7,000 RPMs, the looks and the engagement, buy a manual F-type V6, late 2017 or 2018 model so no GPF. Switch Dynamic mode on and you will never regret. Ask me how I know 😁
Jags have terrible reliability, I know I worked for them. I remember the chief engineer saying we test cars to do 100k miles, the Germans build cars to do 250k.
@JoeKing-t7l when it comes to the V6 engine at least that's BS. People who don't understand about car maintenance usually spread that myth. Like other manufacturers, they don't include everything that may need changing in the service schedule. You gotta do your research and do preventative maintenance by replacing wear and tear items from the cooling system, pipes mostly, at 50 or sooner, change the fluids more often and they will last a lot time.

I bought it with 6000 and it’s only done 12.000 miles now because I’m terrified to drive it anywhere for fear of breaking………needless to say it’s going up for sale
Very very unlucky donkey.
60000km on mine.
AMazing. No issues at all 👍🇦🇺
Brutal. The dynamic engine mounts are nice when they work and not so much fun when they don’t.

Honestly approaching good time to get into a 991.1 GT3 also assuming you take the time to get one with a G6 revision engine. The 10 year warranty extension are approaching the end so the prices will certainly soften some. Considering the price difference at least here in the states the 991.1 is pretty appealing.
And this is particular theme is very very beautiful, thanks James for another spectacular presentation.
and that is my dream car - ill take it over the current gen
992 gt3 does drive much better. I've had multiple 991.
Not for the street, too big, but yes for track use
Of course. 992 series is not a sports car anymore. Too big, too heavy. And the RS version just an ugly mf
Someone in this threat doesn’t own a 992. Never has. Never will.
( ugly mf ?…..reeeeally ! )😮😊
@@Nord_Mann 991 is the same weight as the 992.1 and has the double wishbone front which, for me, is a total game changer. No more front end 'MacPherson' style hopping in turns while trail braking and high G apexing. Tons better over crap central London roads. It is bigger but so are all cars now. After the poor showing on the 992.2 I have ordered up a second 992.1 for Tuesday. I'm replacing my Huracan Tecnica with it and I won't regret it.
Agreed, I was hoping Porsche would got back to Analog gauges. These cars with these darn flat panel displays are annoying.
Agree, but I wish the rev counter was black and not grey.

I presume your friend James is the 3rd owner as I sold it at the end of 2019 ‘pre-covid’ …
as a 991 and 992 driver, i can attest that what he says at 14:10 is the absolute truth. 992: much bigger numbers, but doesn't feel right. 991 feels so much more alive.
17:25 has apple CarPlay but is wired, but no android auto. Also only in 2018+ 991.2’s
Not is USA. The dealers frequently ‘overlook’ obvious damage during pre-owned inspections and markups are insane. +$250,000 USD markup was not uncommon for a great drives car valued significantly less. I’ve experienced this several times from multiple dealerships: “how much are you willing to pay?”
Porsche USA choosing to partner with car flippers and not actual drivers is a common trend. My proposal is to raise MSRP and then to not allow dealership markups to eliminate the issue.
That a official Porsche dealership can do a markup is just insane...but it's the current world of demand and ask.
You don't always have to pay ADM.... those Taycan's ain't gonna sell themselves! I reckon a new electric Macan Turbo and Taycan Turbo in your purchae history and you'll be right up in the top 50 in line for a GT allocation

A delightful review James, very enjoyable 😊
It does have Apple Carplay, just not wireless - you have to plug your phone in!

My absolute dream car, the best perfect proportion looking gen of 911. It truely is.
I have a 991.2 GT3 and it has Apple Car Play, you just have to connect it via a wire into the USB port under the armrest.
Yes and only the one under the armrest works for ACP, not the one in the glovebox.
@@Richard-fm1cx yes, was about to say that. Hardly a chore considering the great ergonomics. Best steering wheel in the business.
In Europe at least, all that people were waiting for was for automatics to get good. Once automatics started to come with more gears, lock up torque converters and faster changes, it was all over for manuals for most people.
991.2 is the best modern 911 in my opinion. Also values are reasonable right now. Great for car enthusiasts, go out and drive!
Apple carplay came standard in 2017, it is wired though. At least in US
A Porsche rev range report may be a key to understanding some of manual GT3 unusual price tags.
With flat up shifting and blip down shifting, it's not much different from a slow sequential box.
have owned both. like the manual more for a street car. the pdk is great and would own another but only alongside a manual.
In gear accel (and thus the force you feel) is slightly quicker for the manual due to less losses and lower weight. What you gain in gear you lose during the shifts, but it certainly doesn't feel slower and in fact 60-130 times are identical or slightly in the manual's favor.
Jeepers, what a beast and it FLIES !!!!!!
Love
Your vids man! I know it’s not really your thing, but it’d be great to see you on track with something like these (if the kind people are happy for you to do so) not every car or every vid and yes I could go to auto trader to watch them, but it’d still be cool!
Nice spec mint GT3 991.2 currently for sale at Leeds Porsche for £119k
Ahh the 991.1 GT3... Does almost nothing wrong, does everything right. Defenitely a future classic!
The way you delivered that Porsche hater Ferrari fanboy line was perfect. I laughed pretty hard.
Apple car play is standard on 991.2’s albeit not wireless (well it certainly is on our Carrera T)

Definitely the GT3. The engine elevates it somewhere the GT4 cannot go

What a stunning color!
What’s it named?
The new camera is great but miss the nostalgic look, i thought the videos were from early 2000s until i saw the cars
Good review
Gearbox, PDK stands for 'pretty damn komplicated', Porsche dealers are becoming total snobs, vetting their potential customers as much as Ferrari.
"Measurably it's better, subjectively I just don't like it"
Isn't that the truth with the majority of products these days
Take the awful side decals off and that would be a beautiful car.
991.2 does have apple car play, just FYI
Only via the plug in lead.
Prices are still way too high for any GT3’s in Canada, still…😢
I applaud those who continue to try and enjoy cars like this in the UK, but in reality unless you can go to tracks or areas such as the remote parts of the Pyrenees fairly regularly it must be painfully frustrating. It is essentially impossible to really enjoy them more than a few corners at a time unless you are not particularly fond of your driving license.
I see Chris Harris driving his gt3 touring around Bristol often. He treats it as a daily.
He’s loaded, (like Harry & the rest of those journalists ) , so no problem. The rest of us just drool …

im starting to realise porsche is the greatest manufacturer of all time
Porsche is the only manufacturer that can have cars literally catching on fire, multiple generations with catastrophic engine failure, and can still be considered the greatest manufacturer of all time. And that’s coming from someone with multiple in the garage! Brilliant marketing for sure!
@@bananskal1921 welcome to the club
As an ex-Porsche mechanic, I can safely say that their marketing is far superior to their supposed quality and engineering…
They almost failed until they started selling SUVs.
Be careful with that statement.. Porsche sold 320,000 cars last year but it looks like they might not even make 300,000 this year, and if that happens it means Porsche sold 54 less cars every day in 2024 than they did in 2023. 👈 That's No bueno.
Every 911 is special.

Brilliant drivers cars, simples.

Jay, is it safe to start looking at the 991.1 GT3? Seemingly, such a value if new engine...?
If your gonna get it with PDK then you might as well get an RS
991.1 RS has a different engine to a 991.2 GT3. The 991.1 RS has a revised 991.1 GT3 engine, with some internal fixes and a lowered Rev limit to 8600 rpm. And yes some 991.1 RS have had some issues, primarily if the oil isn’t replaced within 10,000 Km’s Max/ the specification of said oil isn’t 100% correct and poor fuel quality issues.
But both issues can be mitigated 😌
TY J 🙏🙏
Got a 997.2 GT3 on my wish list to get next year
I had one for just over ten years.

Now you add an additional 5 years of approved warranty that even covers more than just the engine, and keep on enjoying your .1
I believe it 15/16 years. Mine is still going at year 12, only needed it for PDAM- which is common and not worth replacing if out of warranty.
