    In today's video, I drive the latest and allegedly greatest of the 992.1 generation of Porsche 911. The S/T supposedly takes the best bits of the RS and the GT3 touring to create the perfect road car. Some have called it the greatest 911 ever - but what's it really like?

    It's refreshing to hear someone be honest about the modern "high priced" 992 limited edition models. Yes, if you're looking for a brand new 992 or something to flip, or something to collect, then this is top of the tree in 2024. However the price !! He's called it out correctly - thank you Jay. We know why Porsche justify it (if they sold it for less, someone would flip it for more) and it is a VERY good car. But it's nice to hear someone who hasn't totally drank the Porsche kool aid because they too are at their dealers waiting for an GT3 RS allocation. Great channel.

    North American 992 3RS owner here. I had a go in the ST recently and definitely agree it's a hell of a car but not at the very high market price. But what I will never understand is why folks care how someone else spends or uses their money. I track my RS quite a bit but I barely drive it otherwise. I don't go to car meets and honestly I'd rather keep to myself when I'm out in the car. I have friends with the same car or equivalent cars and some of them sit and some are driven. None of it affects me though. Its not my stuff and not my money.

      Don’t think your approach to use is the concern, it’s that Porsche has gone from the “enthusiast” brand to the “elite” brand with its pricing and more luxury focused offerings. Then you need to be “chosen” as worthy of an allocation based on spending history. And the final hurdle is the ADM if your are not lucky to avoid that. And I won’t even get into those that flip them for profit.

    • @RichardFermion
      @RichardFermion 4 години тому

      @@gbarton800 I can get the frustration, but I think on the whole enthusiast brands cannot exist in modern automotive landscape, or at least without major volumes within the broader brand like TRD/GR with Toyota. Porsche is publicly held. Being an enthusiast focused brand wanting more reasonably priced cars simply doesn't make as much money as high margin goods.

And then sell it in a rwd/manual config.....me and the 10 other guys who want one.....and I owned a w213 estate and currently have a panamera GTS Sport Turismo i bought new. Would happily bought another panamera wagon brand new. Not enough of us. And simply saying, bring an affordable one won't do either. Making these things lower margin is too much risk for the OEM and/or they need unrealistic volumes. (Not to mention what that does to the brand) There are plenty of folks who wouldn't consider the brand because of such "low market" offerings. Losing that customer base would hurt.....I know. So I learned about ADM (I’m in the US) and was told the ADM would be $115K over MSRP, which I couldn’t afford, so I got a 992.1 GTS. I loved it but despite straight piping it, and getting a tune (630hp 585ft-lbs tq) it still was lacking soul. Nothing I did made it closer to the NA 4L GT3 I REALLY wanted. It is such a shame that ill-informed YTers presume to know who buys these cars. They extrapolate from a small data set and make erroneous conclusions. I know so many true enthusiasts who have bought one of these - not to collect - but to drive. Yes, some do “play the game”, but many go to “proper” owners. I am lucky enough to be one of those, who has spent more than a sensible proportion of my earnings pursuing my dream of driving Porsche’s finest cars - on road and track - for over 25 years. And I am far from alone. BTW, whoever insured their S/T for £475k is getting it massively wrong - I know of a delivery mileage car sold for under £400k. Once again YTer misinformation and for the enthusiast it’s never about the value, it’s about the driving experience. And let me end with the two other points. Roll cage is NOT standard fit (it is an option). And steering is excellent - as much as I think Porsche do the most natural rear wheel steering systems, it’s notable that without it the S/T is just that bit more feelsome, particularly between turn in and apex.

    I think the Porsche ethos has changed considerably over the past 20-30 years, not necessarily for the better.
    The 911s of the 70s and 80s were still relatively upmarket, and yet they more-so appealed to the common man. If you were on a moderate salary and wanted a dependable and yet fun weekend car, the 911 was the obvious choice - they were expensive back then, but comparatively offered a better driving experience for the price than the likes of cars like the Ferrari 308 (which had all the looks of a quasi-supercar, but definitely didn't have the performance of one).
    Nowadays I think it's very much the antithesis - there are many sports cars that offer similar driving pleasure and performance for a quarter of the price of a 911.
    These newer collector-oriented 911s are destined to sit in air-conditioned garages, not be driven. They only appeal to snobs, not to car enthusiasts.

    I have an ST, ordered it new at MSRP and actually drive it a lot. Picked it up in June. I have owned pretty much all the GT cars and this one is by the far the most enjoyable. It is the perfect combo of older school feels/sensations but still has the modern things we all reluctantly hate to admit we like in modern cars: larger screens, internet radios, automatic GPS nose lift, ect ect. So for someone like me it’s an absolute win win. Would I pay a $200k ADM for one? Absolutely not, but not because I think the car isn’t worth it, but more because it would then cause me to worry about the value of the car and would limit me from driving it often to keep the miles down. At MSRP however I am letting it rip!

    Absolutely correct analysis but Porsche will not listen to it. They are very aware that they build exactly one sports car in high public demand and that is the 911. The 911 is Porsche's identity. With these countless limited editions and regular engine variants they are faking a big model portfolio they in fact don't have, they are only selling the same car again and again. It's a great car, especially the 992 model, granted, but it's a very obvious cheap trick. And since they saw how popular their GT3 RS versions are, they want to rip off the collector market with artificial limitations that bring also the adventurers and gamblers to the table. It's not serious business and people should avoid it. If you want to own and drive a 911, fine, it's technically a great decision for any petrolhead. But stick to the base model then, it's providing at least 90% of what a 911 can deliver and its price tag is already exaggerated enough compared to its performance.

  • @TheGreekCarGeek
    @TheGreekCarGeek Годину тому +1

    I’m sorry, I agree with you usually Jay Emm, but I don’t think you understand the market. Your earlier video that overs were dead hasn’t aged well… the reason that this car commands the prices it does has so many factors, not least of which is that there is no alternative for this experience elsewhere in the market outside of the Gordon Murray T50/T33 (500+hp NA, manual, lightweight) for $2M+ and in that context, the S/T is a RELATIVE (keyword) bargain. And to compare it to a base spec GT3 RS price isn’t comparing apples to apples, add the Weissach package, which the S/T inherits many of its parts from, and the GT3 RS is actually $300 USD MORE expensive. The reason that the 911R shot up to $1M was because it was widely considered to be the LAST EVER manual GT Porsche. Had that held true, then the prices would have likely held, again because there is no substitute on the market for that experience. Ferrari and Lamborghini haven’t made a manual in over a decade. EVERY Lamborghini is now a HYBRID 😢 and the F80 is a hybrid turbocharged V6. You have to put the value in the context of the market as a whole, and to add context to the S/T’s value proposition, Porsche GT Division boss Andy Preuninger in a recent interview with Autocar made the bold statement that Euro 7 would spell the end for the pure-ICE NA 4.0L engine, and they will be forced to go Turbocharged or Hybrid after 2026. That means the S/T and the 992.2 GT3 are the LAST (either) naturally aspirated GT cars, OR the LAST manual GT cars (Porsche’s implementation of hybrid precluded using a manual). I believe the S/T will be a $1M+ car in a decade or so, and I put my $$ where my mouth is and exhausted my life’s savings for an S/T because I feel that strongly about it. Jay Emm, you’re an amazing car reviewer, and I value your opinion on the driving experience, but I think you’re off the mark on this particular cars value proposition and future value. My 2cents/pence 😅

    What I love about Jay and his channel: he calls it like he sees it! No B.S. "Don't be dicks Porsche" is maybe the best quote on YT for 2024! So true. Been buying and selling 911's the past 15yrs and it has been frustrating to see the costs now to buy any 911. Thanks for the review ✌

    Great, honest review James. How does this compare to the manual 991.2 GT3 you drove? How about the 991.2 gt3 vs the 997 gt3/gt3rs? Thanks!

    Nice review James. Agreed Porsche should make as many people want. Sensible cash for one of these would go on a 992.2 Touring, same dampers etc. In fact you get Litchfield to tune 992.1 GT3 dampers to S/T spec.

    The best part of the whole video was how enamoured he was with the 997 GT3, because that car is really very affordable, dam near as rare (2256 vs 1963 units) and way more 911-esque than the larger, more technology-laden 992.

    The 997 GT3 was mentioned in this video, but what is usually considered the best 911?
    I was able to take a 992 Turbo S around Silverstone last week. Very, very capable on a wet track and lots of fun. In the usual Porsche way, the enjoyment came from the speed and its ability. If I was to buy one, I would hope for something that thrills and feels like an event each time I ise it.

    To my eyes they've overstretched the 911 into a car that's just a bit too bloated and a bit 'over specced' and underfinished. I think with the evolution of the watercooled 911 since the 996 they managed something very impressive with the 997 but since then they've pushed the bigger, more technical, more this, more that, too far. And similtaneously trying to play the speculator game... I agree if you're after a watercooled era 911, when you get to the 997, stop rolling the dice. Stick!
