Love this run. I have rewatched multiple times, and I always die when the announcer asks if he can read some donations and Spike says "No shut up we're gonna listen to the music."
Like lots of people, I loved this game as a kid. But watching this video has made me realize that I never really understood the battle system all that well. It's a testament to Cross's game design that it has enough accessibility to be fun but enough depth to be interesting. Great run!
I love turning this on when I draw. Not only because it's a long speedrun, and therefore means I don't have to fiddle around looking for music or something else to listen to, breaking me from drawing inspiration, but also because, while Spike and Ash are both real laid back and chill, they both have a unique energy and enthusiasm about the game that, as someone who has a hard time finding fans of Chrono Cross, I greatly appreciate. It's also great to hear the music (even in short burts :p) that makes me all nostalgic. Perfect background noise.
TheValorious I agree wholeheartedly. Spike is very entertaining and surprisingly knowledgeable. Though there are a lot of fantastic personalities out there. Trihex, Poobear, Carlsagan (he's a scientist. He'll often answer legitimate questions about anything science-related. Sure lives up to his name, eh?), Darbian, Bonesaw, PJ, Firedragon, Blechy... Too many to name them all.
I was thinking the exact same thing, when I took the idea to scroll through the comments and see this as the top comment. Spike is really good and I know the run will be entertaining with him.
Just discovered this after watching a lot of GDQ videos, and I *love* the commentary. I've been pretty back and forth on Chrono Cross over the years, but from the commentary I now appreciate a lot more of the depth of the combat mechanics in the system.
Yeah, my first encounter with Chrono Cross was H.C. Bailly's LP of the game, which I never completed - his explanation of the battle system led to me writing it off as needlessly complex. This speedrun, however, makes me challenge that assumption. It's complex, but perhaps not nearly as much as I thought.
There's a tutorial for the combat very first thing you do in the game at the starting village, the old guy teaches you. Do people even know there's a tutorial there? Seeing how many complain about the combat system... Jesus, do these people even know how to read? Or are they so addicted to dopamine hits like a lab rat that they can't stop for anything that lasts more than 30 seconds?
Boy look at this misanthrope. Tutorial doesn't explain anything about enemy action economy the way that the speedrunners here do (so well that I still remember the content of the video two years after my OP), and between the official strat guide and all in-game explanations the element system is still pure gameplay murk - you basically have to go to gamefaqs or whatever to learn enough to be able to make meaningful combat actions (and the game is so easy after a certain point that "meaningful combat" actions is pretty irrelevant).
I miss this game so much. Such a masterpiece that is often forgotten, and the music... some say DQ had the best, some say FF... for me, Chrono Cross has the best music in RPGs to date.
I'm so glad that they brought up the party wipe glitch for Dragon God. That happened to me on my first playthrough and thought I was doing something wrong. It then proceeded to never happen again and I had never heard of it happening to anyone else until now.
I don't understand how Spike Vegeta has the time to know literally every single speed run category of every single game in existence... He's a fucking time traveler I swear
EvilAsh has me LIVID with how easily he crushed Garai and Miguel. Garai took me 38 tries when I was a kid, and Miguel was well over 100. Granted, I didn't really understand the mechanics as well as I do now, but UGH. Props.
spikevegata: "so .. i'm gonna let you explain all about this strat while i do it, because its a really cool strat *goes on explaining all about the strat himself*" lol :D
So I was at this event, it started at about 11PM local time and it was at nearly the end of the week so we were all pretty butt tired throughout. Plus RPGLB2016 only had about 70 total attendees, so there weren't a ton of people there to begin with. Pretty much the only ones in the event space at this hour were there on camera at about 3:40:00 when we all decided to prank Spike by leaving the room, and it tapered off from there until about 10AM when everyone was up and ready from breakfast.
3:40:49 - THAT SCENE, THOUGH. O_O I really enjoyed the game even though I couldn't complete it - I was stubborn and wanted the good ending but The Final Boss wouldn't cooperate. It's nice to see you smash this game to bits.
The battle mechanics for this game is the most complicated by far that I've seen... I'm so glad there's detailed explanation throughout, even though I didn't end up understanding most of them because that's a lot of information to digest in a hurry. Not his fault, though.
It's less that it's complicated and more that it's just not the same system that every other RPG used at the time. I will say that if someone uses the strategy guide or any non-internet resources for this game back in the day, the AP system knowledge was just not present whatsoever. Came much later.
@@Cordellium Yeah. On top of that, the game itself teaches you how the combat system works, in fact it's one of the first things you do in the game! That old guy there teaches you in the village! (can these people even read?? sorry, I'm an asshole...) But yeah, the AP system very interesting, I for one did not know that when you reach negative values the game has a random chance of giving back the turn to you. I always assumed that when you reached negative levels that meant a "wasted" turn and the enemy would be able to move twice. The combat system in this game is very satisfying to play.
@@Cordellium Also, it's one of the very few RPG's I ever played (never came around to finish it) I think the only other "RPG" I played ever was Pokemon? I remember during my first run many many years ago having to abandon the game because I couldn't defeat stupid Garay. On my second run I came back stronger and with more knowledge of how to use the elements during a battle. Oh man what a game, my favourite ever.

So I picked up the switch version, and I am just about to fight Shadow Lynx while the run is nearly over XD. Thank you guys for showing me this game, I probably never would have picked this game up if I hadn't watched this run multiple times over the years
Honestly, I prefer it. It feels more like GDQ's early days before the needs of the sponsors ran everything and all the runs were super-sanitized and "safe"-- plus they run games that GDQ never would, either for reasons of length or obscurity. There's only so many metroid runs a man can watch, after all.
Nice commentary on the mechanics etc of this game. I played the f out of it as a kid but the difficulty on a casual run isn't that high so I never needed to really be optimal.
How is this not on steam? HOW. I will have answers.... I HAVE SPOKEN. thanks so much Todd and Jon and Chris and Stephani. YOU KILLED IT.... except when you didn't.

I've worn 3 color plates during the dragon god fight multiple times and that hasn't happened to me. But it's happened when I didnt have any plates. I dont think you're correct.
@@flipper9038 I'll back you up on this one, I almost always have triple plates equipped on my team to counter weaknesses, and I've only ever seen the glitch a single time over the years playing this game.
I also never finished due to becoming lost many times not knowing where to go in the map, having to resort to online guides. Ended giving up after not being able to progress.
I hope I can one day but if I ever go to one of these awesome events, I will not only be donating thru out but on big games like this one (time played) I will order pizza and stuff for the runners, tech crew, and whoever else is there watching

At the exact time of 5:57:46 I got something funny to say, bout that and it's this from Edd Ed and Eddy, Ed: "I'm a whale, an endangered mammal, hug me."
Dood, they put Razzle the fairy as the third character in the dream sequence in the intro! Awesome, that is one of my faves. ^_^ Of course, I was expecting an eight hour run - you can't skip cutscenes and this game is 100 hours of cutscenes, so yeah... Great job! ^_^
PS2 has a disc speed option when you hit triangle previous to playing the game and you can set it to fastest which makes playstation games runs faster and smoother.
The game isn't as weird as they claim. If they only paid attention to the story it makes sense. The only way you can be confused is if you haven't played Chrono Trigger.
I did that as well and I feel that is probably the best way to appreciate both, I do like Trigger and it obviously is a better than Cross but it is by no means bad. Convoluted yes if you hear the whole story front to back but not bad, its very similar to if you compare Kingdom Hearts 1 to Kingdom Hearts 2, plot gets convoluted as it progresses.
Seeing speed runs of games I used to play put me to shame! Lol I couldn't make it through certain parts and I was grinding levels out. I was pretty young when I played this though, and I never knew what to do next.
I love watching my RPG's getting destroyed in record times, but I could never do it especially with this game because its like reading a really good novel.
The reason is quite simple. It's about the philosophy they opted for the whole development of the game: they ddin't want to create a Chrono Trigger 2. They wanted the game to be different in many points from the first episode, so that people wouldn't simply assimilate the game with Trigger, wich was already "almost perfect" for the team, thus "simply making another episode useless". That's why the gameplay isn't the same, the art direction isn't the same (wich is a bonus for me who purely hate dragon ballesque design), etc. It also help the fact they didn't want the people to be afraid of not understanding the game if they didn't play the first game, since it's actually not necessary to have played Trigger to understand Cross. On the name note, the prototype name for the game was Project Kid (wich is referenced in Chronopolis).
*taps on the time in the description* why isn't it working?! Ohhh. Because Mobile does not have it. Hmm... what to do? Oh! Right! 4:42. Now it works for mobile. Anyone who says i should skip ahead, it is NOT as easy on a PHONE.

Man, Razzly is the random character i got the first time i played this game. I thought shes core character XD
7hrs well spent
The game isn't as weird as they claim. If they only paid attention to the story it makes sense.
The only way you can be confused is if you haven't played Chrono Trigger.
Might be considered a gaming sin, but I finished Cross before Trigger when I played them in high school lol
I love watching my RPG's getting destroyed in record times, but I could never do it especially with this game because its like reading a really good novel.
why this epic game like this.. not make it to the film..
Why is not called Chrono Trigger 2?🤔
But music is very good.😊
The reason is quite simple.
On the name note, the prototype name for the game was Project Kid (wich is referenced in Chronopolis).
spikevegeta aka the Flannel guy (and also awesome voice)
Please try again
this game was ok, to me, but the music in this game is AMAZING, wish they'd left the volume up
2:32:00 this is so wholesome
