Same. They’re FFIX run from 2019 is also legendary. Great announcers as well. These guys are definitely the best runners I’ve seen. I always enjoy their runs.
Same here man. Really chilled, insightful and interesting commentary throughout, and I love how they actually talk about the story and character motivations rather than just speedrun strats. You can tell they all love the game(s).
I still didn't get most of it. Like, why are they trying to kidnap the president? Why are there problems at the academy all of a sudden? What's the secret of the academy? Do they have chimeras?
@@EdenNeedsAUA-camHandle The only convoluted aspect is the "Life"cycle of a/the Sorceress(es). Everything else is your classic "Warring factions", "Destined Heroes", "Reluctant Protagonist" Final Fantasy fanfare.
You guys are the most engaging speedrunners I've ever came across. Your commentary is not only extremely knowledgeable - you're all funny and entertaining to boot. These marathons are exquisite.
There's something really, really funny to me about how the run relies on them being incredibly overpowered and able to blast through all the battles in seconds, but they didn't abuse a glitch to pump up their stats, or sequence break their way to endgame gear, or figure out some complicated strategy to exploit the weaknesses of the AI. This just IS what the game is like, if you know what you're doing. They mess with the RNG a bit to play cards more reliably, but other than that, it's a pretty normal game of FF8, played very, very efficiently.
Yeah, the game is heeeeeckin broken from the start. I broke it in a way less efficient way casually. Once I got Tonberry King's skill to make enemies level up, I just levelled some beefy but easy monsters up to 100 and killed them a lot. Very quickly got to level 100 and felt powerful. Of course, didn't bother using any "Gain stat upon level up" skills because I was a teenager and dumb, so I was way less powerful than I could have been.
I mean..the only person who actually cares about weapon upgrades is Squall for new finishers. Everyone else would only get a bit of power and eventually ludicrous accuracy
Playing the game unaware of its brokeness, it's legitimately challenging. When you figure out how OP junctions + limit breaks are, the only challenging battle becomes Ultimecia, since you gotta be able to take a few hits and set up your party during the battle itself.
@@DragonNexus Leveling up isn't exactly useful in this game, given that enemies level with you. There's no stats requirement either. It's actually more optimal to keep a low level.
LOVE these long FF8 runs! This couch is probably the best there is for this sort of thing. I highly enjoy getting lore mixed in with the explanations and jokes.
I watched the entire thing. Big shoutouts to the entire team for playing this long run and for the awesome explanations. Its really fun to see a run where there's almost no glitches and it comes down to routing and skills.

When I saw this run, I hadn't played FFVIII in LITERALLY 15 years, maybe more. Seeing this reignited my love for this game and got me playing it again, and I have to say it may have become my favorite in the series. Thank you to GDQ and the runners for bringing back such great memories, along with a fantastic and SUPER entertaining run! NINE hours and it was a delight!
I really appreciate J2's commentary on FF games. I really enjoyed his and Davesterio's commentary on ajneb's FF7 run a few years back. He has fun with it but you can tell he knows the game and does a nice job explaining the lore and storyline. It makes the watching experience more enjoyable
For anyone wondering what it is Adel is broadcasting at 2:11:00 , it's "I AM ALIVE HERE" ,"BRING ME BACK THERE" and "I WILL NEVER LET YOU FORGET ABOUT ME"
I have a theory about how Rinoa is "alive" after her life support runs out: *Sorceresses don't die when they have their powers.* This is a fact revealed at the very end of the game, when Ultimecia gives her powers to Edea in the time loop. (Don't ask me to solve how that works in terms of power accumulation, that's another issue and there's a big chunk of a big theory writeup on GameFAQs that covers that in exhaustive detail.) Consider what happens to Ultimecia over the course of the final battle - she should be super dead after that. But she's not, because, despite all logic, sorceresses don't die until they give up their powers, they come back in a half-alive state and are compelled to give up their powers. Rinoa got her sorceress powers from Edea. Given Edea doesn't remember this, and Ultimecia suddenly switches to controlling Rinoa at the end of disk 2, it seems reasonable to assume that this is when Rinoa got her sorceress powers. So Rinoa's a sorceress in space. Runs out of air. Dies. But she's a sorceress, she can't die fully. She wakes up into that weird half alive state, and hears Squall's voice. Because *Power of Love* is a trope, that gives her the will to do something other than seek out someone to give her powers to (which is a good thing considering she's in orbit). She turns on the reserve oxygen tank. (Why this needs manual activation when Esthar's tech level is so far beyond our real world tech, I'm not sure, but it does make things more dramatic.) But she's not really dead - not quite. She's got enough left in her to make her body function so she can transfer her sorceress powers. Her magic is making her heart pump, her lungs breathe, and all the rest, despite the lack of breathable air. So when she turns on the oxygen supply, she removes the thing that has her on the brink of death. So she comes back to life. Also supporting this is a line that doesn't appear in a speedrun, though the commentators did mention it. (note that this might be nightmare inducing): the message you get if you fail to catch Rinoa when Squall goes out to find her. It's not "Rinoa and Squall died in space" It's not even "Rinoa and Squall were lost in space." It's "Rinoa was lost in space...forever." Because she's in that quasi-living state where she's looking for someone to give her powers to, but she's also trapped in space with no way to reach anyone, no way to communicate, nothing. She's stuck as a not-quite dead sorceress-zombie floating in space. Forever.
This is actually make sense. Also to add a few things: The sorceresses power came from a god-type being in FFVIII universe called Hyne, they're essentially a demi-god while they still have their power. That's is probably why they can't die before passing their power. On Edea's case. She have 2 sorceresses power inside her. Her original power came from an unknown sorceress she met when she was 5 and the other is from the dying Ultimecia she met in the time loop. Now it is highly possible that when Squall and co defeat (or killed her) she passed on Ultimecia's power and not her original power to the nearest sorcerer candidate (which is Rinoa) thus freeing her from Ultimecia's control while remain alive since her original power is still intact. I'm still confuse on how Adel became Ultimecia's vessel when Squall and co fight her tho. Since Rinoa should have Ultimecia power still.
Great run. Absolutely in love with it. Clearly mvp of the run is the long hair guy on the right, who’s whipped his head for 9 hours! Cheers and all love ❤
Zell can also be one of the most powerful characters in the game through the same mechanics they use in the Junction System in the run. Maxing out his STR w/ the right magic and using his Limit with just his 2x Openers O + X and Up + Down over and over again is known as his "Armageddon Punch". You go through them as quickly as possible for 9999 damage each hit and can pretty much down any content in the game, including Omega Weapon.
they are not really suggestions. you cant just spam one move all the time you have to change them. and the shown ones you must use except for the special moves. so all in all just the special moves like dolphin punch are suggestions the rest is not
i love this characterization of squall where he's not actually embarassed and introverted, the real reason he doesnt want to touch rinoa is he's severely germophobic and can't stand to touch anybody without protection
@@ricomarez7834 nope...cant be true at all. after the seed test he dances with rinoa without gloves or anything even with close body contact. so, not true at all and totally made up

god damn this game is beautiful, almost brings a tear to my eye while thinking about the positive memories. Great run guys, very imformative and entertaining.
It is a theory, and one that I fully support. In fact, it is one reason I enjoy FF8 these days. I liked it as a game a decade ago, but I just replay it now and the Squall is dead theory makes the game actually deeper, more enjoyable for me.
that is a bogus conspiracy theory, much nicer is the one where some people claim that ultimecia is rinoa who forgot everything due to excessive g.f. use
The change in Squal's personality happens with an almost audible clunk. He goes from brooding, moody teenager to lovestruck puppy between changing the disk from 2 to 3. It's...not good writing.
@@DragonNexus I agree. FF8 is cool but was massively disappointed coming straight off the heels of FF7, which perfected how to tell character relations in a video game story. At least FF9 has focus and decent writing
That blindfolded menu left me speechless for a while. The atmosphere felt even heavier with The Stage is Set being playing as the music for it. Was like I forgot to breath when he finished.
I just finished a play through of the switch version and while I did enjoy the experience quite a bit, the original just looked and sounded so much better. Such a treat on the senses. Thanks for choosing this FF to run!
That blindfolded menu thing. I have not been left speechless by anything anyone has done on the internet for many years. I stood up and clapped afterward man.
How do you guys stays awake and energetic within this 9 hours marathon?? I mean, I love FF8 so much but I'll instantly fall to sleep after 3 hours of gaming. I can't believe I watch this video until the end too. You guys rocks!
Laguna is squalls father and Julia is rinoas mother. I thought that was pretty clear. It's a repetition of a star-crossed romance through their children.
I actually never got that Julia was Rinoa's mother during the game. I'm sure it tells you, but it just never came to me. It also never *said* that Laguna was Squall's father, but that one was obvious
I've completely forgotten this game - took me forever to finish when I was a kid, but wow watching this hits me so hard- like what else from my childhood did I forget, so many games later..
Recently rewatched their FF9 run (my favorite speedrun of all time), and came across this one and man these three know how to keep it fun, all of them are really engaging and play off each other well. And of course there is the fact that they are extremely skilled and knowledgeable.
I always love these long JRPG run. That blindfolded menu from Luzbelheim is especially extremely AMAZING! Consider his condition and how he managed to recover from a mistake as well. Truly sensational. Also that "The End" luck tho.
Loved your run! Thanks to all the runners and AGDQ , that was awesome ! More than a run , it was an adventure you shared with us . and now I'm sad that it is over already but I'm left with a wonderful memory I can watch again.
What the.... The white seed ship is so close? That's nuts! :S the 10 or 12 or whatever times I've sought it out, sometimes spending half a damn hour, lol... Gyahaha, kyahaha...
I was blown away to learn that GDQ was even a thing. It’s amazing we live in a time when such a community can coalesce, and that there are so many people into it, that it could launch such a great charity event, multiple times a year. I’ve watched this entire run multiple times, and it has brought me so much joy. These runners are so good at commentary, and their friendship is apparent and genuine. I can’t wait to catch the next event live next month so I can donate. Many thanks to AGDQ, and these incredible runners!!!
Dude, so many of these names are direct star wars references haha. Ward is a bounty hunter, kiros and laguna are planets, wedge and biggs are alliance pilots; its pretty neat
Just beat this game a few hours ago; the final blow was dealt was by Angelo using Angelo Rush. He entered a timeless, limitless void of no return to save his master. Damn, Angelo's such a good boy!
anyone that can speed run a game for 9 hours has my respect. wasnt sure if id watch this one but hell, ill let it play in the background while im doin other stuff
Finally getting around to this after way too many months not watching this but that Luz blindfold menu was more impressive than his FF9 one given all the circumstances. I like the couch was on the edge of my seat with the phone closer than it should be to my face.

It's a card game until the rules get too complicated. Then it becomes a Class I Frustration Extractor.
i literally put this at top volume to hear this musical you guys said wake everyone up and it was worth it. Much Love.
The level of detail in this game is still so impressive in 2020!
The Eyes On Me sing-along and the oboe solo are what keep me coming back every year, no question.
It's a penny whistle, an oboe is a very different wind instrument.
Amazing run, thanks to everyone for support of the run and the runners themselves - such good stuff!
Thankyou soo much for this one and its timeslot, watching those guys struggle to stay awake for the last 3 hours was priceless.
I just finished a play through of the switch version and while I did enjoy the experience quite a bit, the original just looked and sounded so much better. Such a treat on the senses. Thanks for choosing this FF to run!
What a great run and the commentary was top notch.
GOD I love the ship FMV, it just brings memories of me playing FF8 for the first time on a demo disk
That blindfolded menu thing. I have not been left speechless by anything anyone has done on the internet for many years. I stood up and clapped afterward man.
Eiffel 65!
That ff9 run cracked me up.
THanks for both of them.
It's not a proper FFVIII run without the live Eyes on Me solo, so thank you for doing it right!
OMG that singing was soo good! thanks you guys!
I lost it when I heard the flute
Technically it's a slide whistle, but close enough.
@@RaspberrySuprise Not even technically though, it just is.
I fucking love this run. It is the penultimate achievement in long-run entertainment. Every run should strive to be like this.
Badger: "Hey, did you know theres a bonus air button?" made me lol
I cant believe I'm hearing the couch with muttski sing eyes on me again.
Edit: holy fck the flute! XD
Indeed that flute. he pulled in some extra donations in there :D
Dang imagine being a speed runner for this game lol. That's a full work shift you need to dedicate playing this.
*laughs in BOTW 100% speedrun*
*laughs in Borderlands 2 1-OP8 speedrunner*
Honestly just the soundtrack to this game is awesome, fantastic speedrun to watch
7:58:22 Eyes on me
Thank you
It took me 2 weeks of watching on and off from last years ff9 run. So looking forward to watching this one.
How do you guys stays awake and energetic within this 9 hours marathon?? I mean, I love FF8 so much but I'll instantly fall to sleep after 3 hours of gaming. I can't believe I watch this video until the end too. You guys rocks!
tHANK YOU guys!!!! Your song was amazing
Eyes On Me the most iconic speed running moment in history
damn, I have a deep personal connection with Eyes On Me, and even if the singing was ultimately a joke, I teared up :(
I always love these long JRPG run. That blindfolded menu from Luzbelheim is especially extremely AMAZING! Consider his condition and how he managed to recover from a mistake as well. Truly sensational.
Also that "The End" luck tho.
still watching this in 2024 ♥
I may get flack but ff9 is my fav. I can replay it 3 times a yr and still enjoy
Loved your run! Thanks to all the runners and AGDQ , that was awesome !
More than a run , it was an adventure you shared with us .
and now I'm sad that it is over already but I'm left with a wonderful memory I can watch again.
4 years later. Still a banger of a run. SPACE!
My god, they were surprisingly good at singing the eyes on me song. That was so awesome haha :)
I nearly lost it when Muttski nailed the flute part :')
I skipped to this part because of your comment. Its such gold 😆
The fact these guys actually know the whole lyrics.
Explaining Time Compression sounds a lot like explaining the memory injection any% run for SMW.
what hour they explain it? can find it
@@5054Vrabel 8:21:16 in case you haven't found it already.
What the.... The white seed ship is so close? That's nuts! :S the 10 or 12 or whatever times I've sought it out, sometimes spending half a damn hour, lol... Gyahaha, kyahaha...
Fantastic run and commentary!
OK, the group singing was really wholesome and made me giggle a bit when the kazoo came in. I enjoy this speedrun a lot.
Man. it took me 16 years to go through my childhood. how can you do it in 9 hours?
Lol same. I can do it in about a week now i know what im doing but 9 hours is nuts.
Love how the couch appreciate the sound track so much. FFVIII is probably the best followed by VII then X
That improvised blind menu was next level bananas.
Needa is probably a reference to that imperial officer in Star Wars too.
Damn, Angelo's such a good boy!
even though I rarely watch Gdq or speedrunner, I always respect speedrunner that played old classic game let alone explain the story.
Love this run, here is hoping Square remakes this game after 7.
Oh boy, you'll have to wait at least a decade 🤣
Plenty of ff fans wouldve preferred they started with 6. I think the chances of 8 are as good as EA not screwing the consumer on any game for a decade
They haven't even finished the 7 remake
nah, 9 is next.
anyone that can speed run a game for 9 hours has my respect. wasnt sure if id watch this one but hell, ill let it play in the background while im doin other stuff
That blindfolded menuing was mindblowing
These guys are hilarious! Great game, great show
damn, that Trabia Garden joke at 2:23:18 hurts. Also, Xu is Best girl.
FF8 has SO MANY GOOD SOUNDTRACKS! Good run! :)
I loved learning little things bout this game... i totally grinded like a regular rpg first time i played lol
Finally getting around to this after way too many months not watching this but that Luz blindfold menu was more impressive than his FF9 one given all the circumstances. I like the couch was on the edge of my seat with the phone closer than it should be to my face.
