Two of my favourite woodworkers having fun and making dust. Both are absolute inspirations to me and make me proud as a relatively recent Canadian. Keep it up guys.
Picture, if you will, me running through a field of sunflowers in slow motion, my fists pumping above my head as a crowd cheers and the band plays Queen's "We Are The Champions"... Yes, the winner and still reigning champion of the box joint jig - me! :D Fun stuff, both jigs have their pluses and minuses (although mine has a lot fewer of the later...) and at the end of the day, they get the job done quickly, accurately and efficiently. Playlist with the other videos with Matthias: ua-cam.com/play/PLQl9KPrpiIH-7IbLuHAyO1IBX6-iJECdt.html My second channel: ua-cam.com/channels/zGbp-rRVNwyFhn9gHoZr5g.html My jig: www.ibuildit.ca/Workshop%20Projects/Jigs/ultimate-box-joint-jig-1.html Matthias's jig: woodgears.ca/box_joint/jig.html
As an engineer I really appreciate Matthias' version since it has near infinite possibilities. However, I do like the simplicity and elegance of yours John, so yep field of sunflowers for you, but I think a field of wildflowers would be better since sunflowers are pretty tough to even walk through much less run. The real question is why neither one of you use "eh" in normal Canadian conversation?
I think you won John, but I can't picture you "running" through a field of sunflowers or any other flowers, and I'm sure it would be slow motion even at normal speed. No offense, I pack the same baggage.
I actually like both jigs but no offense to Matthias, his jig is just too complicated to build and actually takes a lot more time. Looks like you two had a blast when he visited which is the most important thing here, a bit of friendly jeering is to be expected in this hobby.
I was referring to a 6x6 beam - as in, something that almost hits the ceiling. Not a stack of short little boards. With long stock, working fast, you really need a sturdy box to clamp it into.
Both Jigs are amazing in their own respects. Any jig that can make repeatable box joints is an amazing jig. People call Matthias' jig over complicated, but to someone like Matthias it isnt complicated at all. I think he enjoys the challenge and excels in such an environment. I've always taken John to be a straightforward kind of person who wants his tools to do exactly what he needs and doesnt require bells and whistles. He knows what kind of box joints he will use and he built a jig that will do those joints quickly and repeatably with minimal setup. I love them both for those exact reasons.
I just wanted to say it was great to see my two favorite "Builders" on one video. I have built Mathias' gear router lift, and have purchased Heisz' box joint jig plans for my next project. I patiently await Mathias' take on the wood table saw fence before I tackle that one. Thanks you two!!!
This was the best all-time vid. Matt looked like he was cranking those old crank cars, hilarious, "did you have to put that on hitch trailer"...you're cheating cutting in reverse" Jealous anyone? Comparing a cadillac to a pretty little corvette. There's no winners here guys. We, the audience are the winners guys. Watching such great commraderie. Gotta have more of this stuff. The Nutty professor vs The Krankster.
Wow, no ego there. Thanks fellas, the most personality i've seen from you all. Currently building John's table saw fence, have built several Matthias gadgets, including my most used router lift. Gears are tricky, but once you get them down, they work really well. That was fun though.
Ok I follow you both and this one was of my ALLTIME favorite videos!!! The shear competition and friendly rivalry was great to see. It's apparent you both have great respect for one another but seeing the trash talking and see you both slightly outside your normal element of videos was great! I would love more videos like this! It shows your views multiple options to do similar tasks. Great idea to you both!!!! VERY WELL DONE!!!!
Love these videos of you two. I noticed I was either laughing or had a massive smile on my face the whole time I'm watching. You guys are too much fun. Please make more! Better yet, all you top wood working UA-camrs gotta get together for one massive party!!!!
just want to add that the Party has to be a slumber party and the first one to fall asleep wakes up the next day with DiResta written all over their body.
Please do more video like these, it was very interesting and entertaining. And really makes easier for beginner woodworkers like me to see better what actually fits my needs better. :) To sum up the comparison, I would agree to many other commentators, John's jig is obviously simpler to use and will get you through most of everyday situations, whereas Mathias's jig is little bit harder to use, but can handle even some not so everyday situations.
Ive Been watching both you and matthias independantly. i see you teamed up for a few videos. I enjoy both your competitive spirits. not sure when you started sharing but i have watch two videos so far.The clamps and box jig videos. My count is 1 to 1. i like your jig because its compact. I am a carpenter myself in the field. Custom stairs and interiors pays my bills at the moment but i love living out having a shop vicariously through youtube. keep up the good work
These videos are really fun to watch. I enjoy both of your channels separatly, together you guys are the "Martin & Lewis", Abbot & Costello" show. Maybe the "Three Stooges" minus one stooge. In any event you are very good together!
I love this series of videos because it combines two of my favorite youtubers with seemingly two different approaches to the same problems. I want to believe that you two like each other (we know you respect each other) although i'm not quite sure. i would love to see more collaborative projects (and plans) because i think in many ways, the disparate approaches can complement/augment the other. You "complete" each other. hah. Imagine the practical and commercial possibilities of project/jig plans that have been designed by the both of you. You would dominate! There would be no question about whose plan to buy. Not only would you increase market share but you would increase the market size! No other youtube woodworker could compete with your plans!
This is spectacular entertainment! I have been wanting to see you guys do a collab for a long time now. Awesome that guys found each other... seems like you guys had a lot of fun
Well, I've come full circle in my woodworking it seems. One of my very first personal woodworking projects was the combination lock from Woodgears. Now, probably 12+ years later, having gone through several woodworking channels on youtube and finally ending up here from Pask Makes (after he gave the box joint jig a shout out, funny enough), here I am seeing you making a video with the Woodgears guy. I'm glad to be getting more into woodworking again and can't wait to have a shop big enough for a table saw! I'll probably make this jig even before then just because it's too cool.
If I'm not mistaken Matthias designed the original years ago and several people took the next few years creating alternative units that addressed each iterations weaknesses. They both work excellent and anyone would love to have one in their shop. There is something to be said for making the better one after years of refinement and something to be said about creating a game changing original device that spurred on multiple "Copy Cats". Enjoy your trophies boys!
I had an idea that you would doing the 6x6 just to prove the point of your jig - haha. Even the editing is a bit different than his. It's great to be out here in YT land watching these videos you two together on his visit! So enjoyable and amusing to see two of my favorite woodworkers together and joking back and forth. As I said on his channel, the two of you approach a project differently (as are your personalities) and different jogs, but have the same excellent results! John, I know Matthias wishes he had more head room in his shop so he could have a camera gantry like yours -haha! Thanks for publishing these videos! I'm really enjoying them as I hope the two of you did being together in the same shop. Now it's your turn to visit his!
I also like yours the best. I've bought the plans for both of them. Matthias' is a very very nice jig, however it's nowhere near as fast to setup and use as yours. Keep up the good work John. Both Matthias and you are a giant inspiration for a lot of us. Rise above all the trash comments that follows and keep doing what you do.. merry x-mas. Peace ✌️
I'm not a master carpenter or anything sort. I also have yet to buy either of the jigs but let me give my opinion based on what I saw in the videos. John's jig - (+ points) Simple looking and simple to use. Not many parts to make. Small, easy to move around and takes a little space for storing. (- points) The movement is thumb operated. You need to hold down the gripper to grip the thread with you thumb. Prolonged cut / usage will cause problem to thumb joints and could lead up to dislocation. Very bad medically talking. I prefer if the gripper allows you to use the entire hand to hold down the locking system. You can only move the material in one direction. It would have been better to move it both ways because when you cut a bigger sized box joint, you might want to cut the sides of the grooves first and then clear the middle part. Matthias's Jig - (+ points) Very accurate. Good to use for multiple sized cuts. All you have to do is change the gears accordingly. Omni directional allows clearing the middle part of the cut is easy. (- points) Bulky, noisy and too many parts to make and keep especially the gears. It has to be made very precisely. Not many people are good with the band saw to cut in precision even with a template. Good mathematical calculations needed to get the right cut. Too much brain work. Not for those who are good at hand but bad with math. I would suggest to add a sticker on the gears that shows calculations that measures the distance of every gear turn. Some thing like a vernier caliper. I love both channels and I'm looking forward to see more videos from both of you.
LOL You guys!! Hey, you guys!! You're having way too much fun. I know, that isn't possible, but you are. I'd really like to see you guys work together on a large, complicated project just to see the creativity that would ooze everywhere and eventually take over the earth. World domination is within reach if you work together. lol
Guys...guys! Yeah it's loads of fun to watch you whip them out and measure, but the truth is.....I've tried to build both of your jigs and I've been doing this woodworking thing a long time, but I just can't get these complicated contraptions to work right. They do no good if we can't reproduce them! Mathias... your gear program is a pain in the dump bucket! John... all those tiny little parts are a lot of work with no happy ending if you don't get every one exact! You guys are geniuses... I love what you do and it inspires me to be better but you both have a tendency to over complicate the simple. Box joints are not so difficult that they need such complex devices to make them. I'm gonna stick with the old sled and peg system it works just fine!
5:15 "to cut those odd sizes that you'll never need" LOL John your a savage...Great vid and thanks for sharing! Can't believe your jig is actually much better than Matthias (german engineer) lol.
ciao John volevo farvi i miei complimenti e volevo dirti che sono molto belli questi video insieme a persone di altri canali e poi Matthias e simpaticissimo oltre che bravo
I'll lend you a t for later in the description. Matthias and his jig are suitable for extreme precision. Your jig gets the job done well even without wooden gears.
this is the way its done, the way it has always been done, and the way it will always be done - that's all I have to say about carpenters and team work
You are both really funny, arguing like little boys about who has the better toy! I prefer the versatility of Mathias' jig which does not rely on certain blades and can cut all box widths as long as they are wider than the blade. Unfortunately my shop is too small for such a big jig. So I built a jig which is compact like John's and has wooden gears designed with Mathias' gear template generator.
this was great! the ending was funny and the music was perfect! lol I'm going to have to go with John's jig its alot smaller and just seems more practical for the avg woodworker like myself and THATS JUST MY OPINION...BOTH are great jigs though..really liking these short videos of you guys collabing! keep em coming!
what about testing which mechanism is the most reliable by packing saw dust into each jig all other all the moving parts to simulate bad storage or getting it back from letting someone else use it for the weekend then see how well the jigs work if at all. Also comparing how easy it is to clean each one out.
I decided to buy John's plans. I made Mattias' tilting router table and its good but the gears require a knack to make. Get the gears wrong and you've got a crappy device. Plus I like how compact John's is. We'll see how I do!
I like both jigs, but I think yours is much faster to setup and use. Every time you turn that gear, it is possible to turn a little over or under. That push thing seems more consistent.
Backstroke cuts are kind of dangerous. It has a tendency to throw the workpiece (and jig) at you and lift it off of the table due to the rotation direction of the blade. That is where the size and weight of Matthias' jig come in handy. Forward cuts hold the workpiece to the table and allow you to push it into the blade at a controlled speed.
Two of my favourite woodworkers having fun and making dust. Both are absolute inspirations to me and make me proud as a relatively recent Canadian. Keep it up guys.
Thanks Graham!

Do i hear that someone is going to boxjoint some sunflowers together???
Lucy in the sky... Congrats on the win...lol
I was referring to a 6x6 beam - as in, something that almost hits the ceiling. Not a stack of short little boards. With long stock, working fast, you really need a sturdy box to clamp it into.
No problem, as long as you don't try to cut on the back stroke :)
Ok, I know this is ancient banter and all, but where do I get a table saw with a 6 inch depth of cut to run that box-jointed 6x6 over, Matthias?? :)
Both Jigs are amazing in their own respects. Any jig that can make repeatable box joints is an amazing jig. People call Matthias' jig over complicated, but to someone like Matthias it isnt complicated at all. I think he enjoys the challenge and excels in such an environment. Love these. Two masters with different perspectives arriving at a place with varying degrees of choice and background. Very cool!
watching you two together is like watching Abbott and Costello's "Who's on First". Keep being awesome.
Looks like you both had a lot of fun, the banter is great, the mutual respect evident, great stuff
You guys are great. Really enjoyed this video. Ive watched both of you for quite awhile and enjoy everything you do.
I so enjoyed watching this!
The brotherly competition of fellow woodworking geeks! 😆👍👏
Wow, no ego there. Thanks fellas, the most personality i've seen from you all. Currently building John's table saw fence, have built several Matthias gadgets, including my most used router lift. Gears are tricky, but once you get them down, they work really well. That was fun though.
I'm loving all the ball busting. I'm also enjoying watching both versions of these videos.
You two have good a dynamic together. I hope we can expect more collaborations in the future - thanks for the laughs!
Very enjoyable to watch the two of you compare equipment. I like your jig best John.
love this series you two are doing. you look like you're having so much fun.

Thanks for making this video two of my favorite wood workers together
Matthias and John, you guys are awesome for doing these comparisons I would really enjoy seeing both of you make a machine of some sort together.
Love these videos of you two. I noticed I was either laughing or had a massive smile on my face the whole time I'm watching. You guys are too much fun. Please make more! Better yet, all you top wood working UA-camrs gotta get together for one massive party!!!!

i love the banter boys u 2 really should have a show just like this, with other jigs and inventions ect.!!!!!!
I really enjoy the rivalry videos. Very informative, funny, entertaining.
You guys work great as a team. I loved the friendly bantering. (Especially Matthias' lack of experience with the miter saw).
This has been a hilarious series of videos. Really enjoyable.
Please do more video like these, it was very interesting and entertaining. And really makes easier for beginner woodworkers like me to see better what actually fits my needs better. :)

It's an absolute joy watching you two duke it out.
6:50
"miter saw? I'll use that cuz you've got no experience with that" lmao
These videos with Matthias are quite fun, I've never seen him so loose and competitive.
its fun to see you two hang. it would be fun to hang with you and see all that banter go down! great stuff. brilliant minds.
Mathias' jig embodies German engineering. Great videos guys.
Rube Goldberg was American :)

The two of you should start a comedy channel. Thanks for the video!
You are really geniuses working exceptionally and wish you happiness
if you installed another tablesaw upside down above yours, and add some height adjustment, you could cut both ends of the boards at the same time!
Well, I've come full circle in my woodworking it seems. One of my very first personal woodworking projects was the combination lock from Woodgears. Love the friendly banter. Great comparison of two different jigs ! I still can decide, but I am a KISS kind of guy !
Very good. Nothing like a bit of healthy (intense) competition.
Much less intense than it looks in the video. Just good fun :)
05:20 That face you make when your candy get's stolen right in front of your eyes.
Matthias of course..
I love the ball busting. I wish Izzy was up north for this meeting of the wood minds.
Marcus Kloepping I wouldn't call it a "meeting of the woods" if I were you
If I'm not mistaken Matthias designed the original years ago and several people took the next few years creating alternative units that addressed each iterations weaknesses. They both work excellent and anyone would love to have one in their shop.

''listen! you can't hear that''... having so much fun with these two
Loved your face at 1.02, fun videos! Avid follower of you both all the way from Wales, UK. 🖒
Matthias can't compete when it comes to trash-talking
have you seen his video on the clamp competition?
you are very mistaken
watching the two of you together is like watching old three stooges... without Moe....
Totally enjoyable!
Peace ✌️
C-clamps: Matthias
Bandsaws: Matthias (slight edge because of bevel capacity)
Strip sanders: Tied
Finger joint jigs: John
I love your guys' friendship
It's so funny... Matthias doesn't seem to register when John is razzing him!! Great video!!
chownc matthias is more calm and humble.. deep down, he probably admit losing to john.. hahaa
I was laughing this whole video. You guys are great together!
On the 'sprocket' on Matthias' jig, forego the tape strips, drill a circular array of holes and use low profile pegs in place of the tape
I'm not a master carpenter or anything sort. I also have yet to buy either of the jigs but let me give my opinion based on what I saw in the videos.
John's jig -
(+ points) Simple looking and simple to use.
Matthias's Jig -
(+ points) Very accurate.
If you guys add one more guy with longish hair, you'll be the Hammond, Clarkson and May of Woodworking.
just add diresta or izzy and it would be amazing to see what they come up with
Izzy, Diresta is to much into himself
Woodeso's Guitar Mods I am sure Mattias is the James May of woodworking.
or simply the Hansen Brothers
This just might be the best comment regarding woodworking, Matthias, and John on UA-cam.
I vote Izzy...with a wig.
LOL You guys!! Hey, you guys!! You're having way too much fun. I know, that isn't possible, but you are. I'd really like to see you guys work together on a large, complicated project just to see the creativity that would ooze everywhere and eventually take over the earth. World domination is within reach if you work together. lol
wow, two absolute legends.
Oh man you two are awesome so funny I'm just laughing so hard. Great videos
5:15 "to cut those odd sizes that you'll never need" LOL John your a savage...Great vid and thanks for sharing! Can't believe your jig is actually much better than Matthias (german engineer) lol.
Holly jig! This is way better than netflix ;)
I'll lend you a t for later in the description. Matthias and his jig are suitable for extreme precision. Your jig gets the job done well even without wooden gears.
this is the way its done, the way it has always been done, and the way it will always be done - that's all I have to say about carpenters and team work
que agradable ver a dos colosos de los inventos con madera compartiendo sus creaciones
Loving these videos
Fun watching you 2 in this video series. Lots of laughs. Did you guys film all these vids in 1 day? Seems like too much fun for 1 day!
About 3 hours, actually :)
Like I said on Matthias's video... I can't tell who won, but I think that's a good thing! 🤓👍🏼
Funniest wood working video ever. good job guys! love you John. :) "crazy joints" hahaha...:)
This is the stuff of legends.
Using the 1 inch 1/8 thread on the Ultimate Box Joint gig will it work with a thin kerf saw blade not being 1/8 wide?
Matthias's jig might be more flexible in what it can do but I would rather have a much smaller, consistent and easy to use jig (aka your jig). :)
It's like watching Canadian Mythbusters.... come to think of it, that would make a hell of a TV show.
Very good ! Two masters !
Hours to construct, John you win hands down
what about testing which mechanism is the most reliable by packing saw dust into each jig all other all the moving parts to simulate bad storage or getting it back from letting someone else use it for the weekend then see how well the jigs work if at all. Also comparing how easy it is to clean each one out.
That miter saw moment. LOL.
The banter seemed friendly at first but then seemed to get more contentious
Would some laminated printouts would make for easy swapping of settings on the geared box joint jig?
Easier to swap for an easier to use jig :)
dos gigantes de la carpintería..un saludo a los 2 desde Argentina
Hahaha I love these videos. Nothing like a little trashtalking
pretty funny watching two of my inspirations clowning each other
I love this video so much.
I decided to buy John's plans. I made Mattias' tilting router table and its good but the gears require a knack to make. Get the gears wrong and you've got a crappy device. Plus I like how compact John's is. We'll see how I do!
matthias finger join jig is overkill ! but i like it :D
Two master builders. .
Awesome stuff!
Aaahh this one had some bonus footage. Admittedly I skipped to the end to see it after watching Matthias's video.
I like both jigs, but I think yours is much faster to setup and use. Every time you turn that gear, it is possible to turn a little over or under. That push thing seems more consistent.
but.. all in all.. Matthias is: *The one and only Wizard of Wood*!
duas feras, sou fã desses caras
i like you guys throwing each others ideas. .. im a beginner carpenter :D
johns is practical.like the thumb control
i got a silly question- If it cuts, why not cut on the backstroke?
Backstroke cuts are kind of dangerous. It has a tendency to throw the workpiece (and jig) at you and lift it off of the table due to the rotation direction of the blade. That is where the size and weight of Matthias' jig come in handy. Forward cuts hold the workpiece to the table and allow you to push it into the blade at a controlled speed.
