Thomas Lang's drum techniques are about the best I have ever seen and I've watched his other DVDs and they are unreal. I've been playing 28+ years and this guy is something else. Very precise and technical.
There's drum solos...and then there's this. He is at another level untouched by most of us. Speed, independent, touch and feel. Incredible. Makes me wanna play more.
Thomas, thank you for all you do in the drum community. This is my 48th.yr.playing drums and still learning everyday. Our craft is a beautiful addiction.
Legend has it that a drumstick fell from space, piercing his skull and splitting his brain into 5 equal segments. Two parts would travel to his hands and two again to his feet and thus... Thomas Lang was born!... again!
I've watched this several times now and I think Thomas might legit be the best there is. Period. Huge statement, I know, but who else can do all this? I can't think of anyone else.
I was there and heard it live. It was too awesome! I don't know about the opinions of drummers in other countries, but in Germany Thomas counts as the best from the best. He sets the maximum borders for other drummers for what is possible to play. What he can't play, the others can't too.
Truly, Thomas has some of THE best solos I’ve seen anywhere, anytime. Yeah, they’re busy, but it’s very organized chaos. Amazing…I’m blown away by his use of polyrhythms and his independence.
This is proof that there's much more to a great drum solo than playing fast with stage strobe lights going. Thomas has rhythmic creativity that makes your body move, and he has the kind of blistering chops most drummers can only aspire to develop, with little hope of us ever getting there. Brilliant ! I would love to see him collaborate with Tony Royster, Jr. I feel they are both on that same level of creativity + chops.
Thomas, you are the greatest technical drummer of all time! The work you put in shines like the sun! Smilin' is so easy when hearing you go to town with your skills!
I must say, I used to think that Thomas was just all technical ability and absolutely no groove or feel. I stand slightly corrected, his groove and feel are starting to come to form. He is a technical genius, master, he has his "Red Seal" in drumming so to speak but I always felt he lacked in the groove/feel department because he was always concerned with be so technically perfect. That has changed a bit and there was some definite feel and emotion in this solo. Well done Thomas.
That probably happened after he took his click track ear pieces out. ha ..still near perfect though, I'm sure. I'm a drummer and ignorantly love to hate on "timing". ha
In an interview when asked about that ''technique vs groove'' he stated that his solos are meant to be a pure display of technique .Of course he has the groove,he worked with tons of artists and you can watch him play swing on memphisdrumshop channel.
I keep coming back and watching this; so good. The best-ever drum solo for me, in light of having heard iconic solo performances from Gadd on Aja etc., to Vinnie on Joe's Garage etc., Buddy Rich's Channel One Suite et al., Steve Smith w/Vital Information & many more, is Neil Peart's YYZ solo on Exit...Stage Left. This one, Thomas, may be 2nd. It's just exciting, interesting and inspiring! Other than the bias of Neil being to me what Moon is to him, I loved Neil's smooth segue into that solo, the well-conceived composition of it, and the satisfying release back into that amazing track. Of course, it initially hit me at a time of life which I'm sure reinforces it in my mind. Like Steve Smith, I'm partial to solos within songs which don't have a "perceptible" break in the flow, but as a stand-alone solo, this performance by Thomas holds it's own against great "song solos" of others; it really shines!
I don't mean this in a bad way, but good way. Thomas Lang's playing sounds like a kid who just got his first drum kit, but somehow that kid is already master of technique, creativity, groove etc. You know what I mean? There's this sincere unstoppable energy and you just can't help but smirk to some licks.
He is a strong, left brained male, thats why no creativity, balancing the left and right hemispheres is what any badass like Arnold needs to focus on to stay well rounded. Look into it if You are the same.
I know what you mean bro, my son's 7 at the time of writing, he's been playing for about three years and he hasn't yet learned what he shouldn't be able to do. He doesn't know what a rudiment is and doesn't care, but in some respects he's better than I am, and I've been playing for about three decades.
Really great work on this solo! A good example of implementing fascinating skills in actually playing music, not just hitting many things very fast and in a complex way. It was a pleasure to watch and to hear, thanks!
Everytime I watch him play I'm like Bro, you've beat the game. It's over. There are no more levels or bosses left. Just the credits. What more do you want?
That's the mindset of someone who never becomes truly great at anything. All if the best musicians, actors, MMA fighters, athletes, and really anything. One thing they all have in common is they never feel like they can't grow or become better at their craft. Constantly feeling there's room for improvement. Always finding something they can improve, and always improving. You can realize you're great at what you do and still try to better yourself. Each day being a little bit better at something than you were the day before. That's a winning mindset. A champions mindset. Apply this to anything positive in life and you'll find success in it.

SOOOOO Good! 4:40 is my favorite He plays triplets between his left hand and left foot one up and two down then he interprets the triplets as four 16th notes and plays in four against the three four being in the kick snare and cymbal syncopation. this type of independence is very hard plus he is moving between 4 rata toms on the left making it 6/8 on them which is also a (simon Sez) maneuver as well, This is months who knows maybe years of hard WORK! it's doable if your willing to do the work every day.
I just simply can't believe the speed and agility between the pedals and other drums it's simply amazing what this man does it's incredible I've never seen anything like it

Hands down my favorite all time drummer, just an absolute thrill to watch & hear
his motions are so fluid.
The dynamics and versatility of this man is so ridiculous. There are few out there that can match it. Not taking away from the many beasts on the set but, this man gets on the set and just goes into a controlled maniac mode #Facts!!!!!
