Billy Reynolds really??? Do you even know who Thomas is? You want to see him in a band? There’s plenty of videos her on UA-cam of him playing with bands and to tracks. He was the band Falco for quite a while until Falco’s untimely death. Played with Stork, guitar legend Paul Gilbert, plus writes, composes and plays his own music. And if you think he’s just “beating” on drums, you obviously don’t understand what he’s doing. The patterns he’s playing and his four way independence I guess are too complex for most to comprehend?
Wtf, why so much hate in the comments? He is a great drummer (session, live playing, soloist, you name it..) He is humble as f***! It's a freaking solo for a Vic Firth video, shut up about this 'he is good but no musicality' (go watch his other videos, especially with other bands
I find the comments that slag him for being so technically outstanding really miss the mark. Yup, he can do accented paradiddle's with his feet. He can combine separate hand/foot rudiments so sound musical. He's obviously achieved things that I don't know of anyone else who has. Of course Weckl, Colaiuta, Harrison, Smith, etc., are outstanding. But he's also a very high demand session player and - yeah - you don't need to be able to do all he can do to play most music. But just because he can do these technically bewildering, precision-mind-blowing things that I don't know of anyone else who can, doesn't mean that he can't sit back and groove. There is a video of him in Stewart Copeland's "Sacred Grove." Copeland says "look, I also have one of the most expensive session players in LA here with me." Know all of what TL is capable of before slagging him for being so technically advanced. Whether being that precise and technically sophisticated costs him in 'groove,' I guess that's open to opinion.
Is it really so hard to just appreciate Thomas giving it his all? Kinda here to see display of every technique he has, regardless of musicality. He's musical in plenty of other performances.
If there was a video game about drum battles, I would pick Thomas over any other drummer. I know I would win, he has no weakness in his skill set, not at all !!
BigBill Lucas No. While his skill is impressive, he hasnt really explored anything new lately, and his solos for the past 10 years have been regurgitations of his previous stuff. Not to mention, he lacks soul and an actual groove. Check out Jojo Mayer, Tony Royster Jr,. Benny Greb, Matt Garstka, Virgil Donati. There are a lot more of great drummers, but these are of the top of my head.
my favorite thing about this video is how tastfully his uses the double bass. Its not over the top, or conformed to one style or sound. I throughly enjoy it. :) Thank you for being you Thomas.
One of the most amazing aspects of this solo (aside from the sheer talent displayed) was that Thomas was able to keep it interesting for the entire duration, well done!
OH MY GOD! This guy is an absolute revelation! Never have I seen such an accomplished player who can tackle basically every style and genre in the book! Amazing
Lets get something straight. There is not a THING ... not one fill, grove, lick, beat, or roll that Thomas Lang cant do on a drum set. You name the greatest Drummers, and greatest Drum solo's of all time, and Thomas will be able to do it just at well and maybe better. He's a true freak of nature and a power house in the drumming world. However, i do see the other side to it. Some people think he has no groove or hes too flashy and i understand that. He does focus a lot of his playing on showmanship opposed to technique and musician ship like that beat he starts doing a little over a minute in is so simple and yet hes going absolutely bonkers with his stick trick ability. Sometimes hes just fun to watch instead of good to listen to. I used to crown him as the best drummer in the world, but i clearly see that he is not even close. Hes arguably the most talented... but hes also independant and has made a career off of solo stuff. I think is Tony Royster, or Neil Peart or name it WHOEVER, sat for hours and hours a day practicing stick tricks, they would be just as good. To me, for some one who used to idolize this guy and still thinks highly of him, it is not fair to crown a drummer of his style and grace as the best out there. You just cant.
Terribly said, on one hand he's the greatest you say but on the other he isn't? Which one is it. You must have only seen him do solos! He's got alot of just songs out there where he plays very musically just holding a solid pocket. Guess what he makes it look easier than anyone I've ever seen. Now add his mad showmanship skills to that, yeah it's not hard at all to say he's the top dog all around in drumming. This is coming from a big Chris Coleman fan and you know how badass he is and still I say Lang is the best of the best
Never said grammar, also there really is no argument here. I am not offended by the (out of date joke), it is just that the joke is... well... out of date. Try making something new up.
Technique, speed, shock and awe aside, do you guys see or rather hear any music in this? Any melodic concept, dynamic variety, some space or air, and compositional idea? I don't. Definitely, his technical abilities need to be respected. But we are talking about music; drums are part of a musical situation. Honestly... Look guys, there aren't many, if any videos with Thomas on a band stand. Who has he played with, what has he recorded? where is that for us see or better: hear? He didn't end up in Drum Theater, I don't know the story behind that, but I guess he would actually have to drop a great part of his technique because that is something that is not wanted in bands, as it would just disturb the music. Even if you think of powerful hard rock / metal drummers - Lars Ulrich coming to my head - doesn't put on that show. Just my views.
Seriously? What have YOU recorded? Who have YOU played with? Does every video on UA-cam have to be a masterpiece designed specifically for you? It's just 6 minutes of him screwing around with his new sticks. Enjoy it for what it's worth or go make your own video; then you can display all of your awesome holier-than-thou talents.
The guy creates numerous beats within that solo and he uses a variety of dynamics and puts his whole kit to use, he's got some serious control and just because his musicality doesn't appeal to yours doesn't suggest it isn't musical
Seriously, I'll never understand people like you. If you don't know the facts, at least use google or something, why just go out and make false and uneducated claims? Makes you look stupid more than anything else. He did play with Paul Gilbert, Tina Turner, Robbie Williams, Sugababes, Ronan Keating, half of the Spice Girls, the Vienna Art Orchestra and others. I mean, what do they know, right? They should have just called you and asked you for your opinion before hiring him, they would have spared them selves the trouble of playing with such an unmusical drummer. Some people, I just... I'm lost for words. Oh, and he was voted best drummer and clinician by multiple magazines, but again, what do they know, right? You should publish an article with your opinions somewhere to spare everybody's time, so they don't have to watch this guy. Sheesh...
d3laiah I kind of understand what Mobby74 means. This is definitely not the best solo that Lang has played. My drum teacher once said that a good drum solo is like a good movie. It starts with a scene that makes u want to watch the whole film but then it calms down. The actual climax comes in the end. Also, the film can't be an action movie, a love story, a horror film and a comedy at the same time. You have to have a concept, like a pattern that u repeat. The film can't be filled with action from the start to finish. There must be more contrast. Like quiet parts and louder parts. This solo was kind of an endless flow of super cool ideas, but there was not much repetition. If I could play any of those super-killer-master patterns Thomas plays there I would use maybe one or two and make an entire solo out of them and repeat them more often and then maybe play them with different dynamics... Then again, I have heard Thomas playing absolutely super musical and killer solos that I love and I know he is one of the best drummers out there. I think this wasn't even ment to be a super musical solo. He's just kind of messing around.
Otto Laakso I agree with your last 3 sentences, but they are a complete contradiction to the first paragraph. I'm not sure what you or your old teacher were trying to say, lol, but regardless, I think the original argument was that trying to over-analyze and nitpick everything anyone records to UA-cam is ridiculous. If you agree that he is just messing around, then all the rest of that stuff is beside the point; that's all I'm saying. In the end, he is a better drummer than anyone who has commented on this video. Period.
Finally someone steps and shows what a good drummer on a big kit can do on a small kit. not to be a Dick, but metal drummers could probably learn something here.
Cool stuff. But where the rubber meets the road is in musical collaboration with other players. You can sit there and blow monster drum chops and do flashy stick tricks all day long. But that doesn't mean you can make music. Play me somethin'. That being said, I love watching him.
+Don Thomas......... You want all that in one demo? But that is not what this particular video is about. Watch one that is, then you can be happy and he can have your very valued approval
Redefining drumming. That was incredible. So smooth! His dynamics, accenting, coordination, originality, and intensity were all amazing. I had never thought to apply the term legato to drumming, but that's got to be it!
he's doing a drum solo showing the sticks, go see some of his recitals on bands and more from his work, he has an amazing groove, a flawless technique, and Vic Firth Signature Sticks with his name on so... more groove? pfff come on man...
Ever since I was13 or 14, when I saw Lang playing a solo, I knew he was the best drummer in the world, I know everyone falls behind this guy!!!!!!!!!!!!
arleco12 I can totally agree with you, double pedals is not my thing either but these days all drum solo's are played like this, i guess we just have to accept it as the norm. Once you get past that line it's fun and it doesn't get any better than this guy
arleco12 And i totally agree. TL is very good for sure, but just see Dave weclke before and for me TL is soulless, just a prefect drum machine but no musicallity..
arleco12 since I love most of the extreme metal bands this guy is special among the other drummers lol. And also using double kick like this requires high technique because it means more combination. But you are so right when you said double bass kills solo especially in jazz, funk, blues or any other non metal genres. After a point tastes in music decides which one is better in that persons opinion I guess..
He plays in Vegas like as a live act so I mean he does them a lot because people who watch him in Vegas who don't know anything about drums can still be wowed about the stick tricks
i still don't understand why people have a problem with stick tricks. i mean all it does is make the performance look cooler. like every drum cover i watch that has even like one stick flip in it gets a shit ton of comments of people saying how it ruined it...
+Sulove Tripathee - Actually, it makes it look like a professional narcissist is behind the drums, instead of a musician. Spending more time in front of the mirror than between the ears.
Ah John , no need to be such a child and presume things you don't know about just because someone else has an opinion you don't like. Would you prefer we all just say stuff you approve of? There's always one of you sad guys out there.....

What is incorrect with my grammar? Joke's old but gold!
Never said grammar, also there really is no argument here. I am not offended by the (out of date joke), it is just that the joke is... well... out of date. Try making something new up.
what a show.. I'm touched by that ending
4:37 well that came from nowhere.
One of the greatest drummers of our time. God bless Thomas
Period.
Ok, Mr. Lang...you just won yourself a new fan.
I love how you incorporate some silence within the solo/piece.
Beautiful music!
B-but... can he do a blast beat?
pretty obvious
he already make a tutorial video about blast beat...check it out dude...
Profanitarian A blast beat is just singles played fast, lol. He was able to do that with 6 years or something.
Guys, it's a joke.
yeh I watched some of that , he can do it but its not very authentic imo he has the skills but not the heart or feel for it if that makes sense.
one of the absolute best!
Finally someone steps and shows what a good drummer on a big kit can do on a small kit. not to be a Dick, but metal drummers could probably learn something here.
Wow, just wow. Thomas, you are an amazing drummer!
Why do you need custom sticks when 60% of your beats is bass drum?
for the other 40%?
REALLY? did you calculate it?
stolegus haha
stolegus That's not true. You use 100% of your brain.
Spencer Holmes no you dont
Um dos videos que mostra toda agilidade e sabedoria de um grande baterista, olhei todos videos da vic firth é o mais preciso de todos .
Puts sticks down, stares at the camera whilst chewing gum, with eyes that say "look at all the fucks I give!"
Thank you Thomas Lang
Watch one that is, then you can be happy and he can have your very valued approval
he's a pretty successful session musician which seems to imply he does play well in groups
Redefining drumming. That was incredible. So smooth! His dynamics, accenting, coordination, originality, and intensity were all amazing. I had never thought to apply the term legato to drumming, but that's got to be it!
Dat outro, tho.
This man has mastered he drumz, pure & simple.
and a 4:24 we all start crying
I did too man dont worry haha!
Thomas Lang ! Excelente sua performance na bat era, impression ante, sensacional...
Must be really tiring using such huge sticks.
i have those sticks they are extremely light. The head is big to make a full sound but the sticks are the same weight as 5as
Brandon Taylor Seriously? I use Vic Firth 5A's and they are perfection..so you are saying that his sticks are the same weight, with a better sound? :D
Maybe closer to 5 bs but yeah. Your five as are hickory. His are maple it's a lighter wood
Ah ok...Maybe the thickness of a 5B, but witht he weight of a 5A then...that would be spot on, I reckon!
thomas original uses 2b nylon tip, i use 2b personal and its great for home, then use 5b for outside, great for practice,
I'm so baked i could watch and listen to this all night long...
i can do this. hold my b.... nvm -,-
Holy shit, this guy is a machine.....just amazing to watch !!
Shouldn't of clicked on this.
His transitions are the best.. daaaang.
more groove please man! you are amazing but you need more groove
he have groove but it is not the main thing in this video, anyway this cosmic precission in the solo is his flagship
hey I was speaking in general ..but ok he is a great drummer
he's doing a drum solo showing the sticks, go see some of his recitals on bands and more from his work, he has an amazing groove, a flawless technique, and Vic Firth Signature Sticks with his name on so... more groove? pfff come on man...
Bardock he does not have a groove in this video because he want. Common sense brah
Ever since I was13 or 14, when I saw Lang playing a solo, I knew he was the best drummer in the world, I know everyone falls behind this guy!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah I'm just gonna quit drumming now
wuuaaoo increible thomas lang.... como quisiera que el me diera clases de bateria....
The over use of the double bass drum pedal just kills solos. Those fills sound like a drum machine for me. That's my personal opinion, anyway.
Love this solo and drum machines both :)
arleco12 I can totally agree with you, double pedals is not my thing either but these days all drum solo's are played like this, i guess we just have to accept it as the norm. Once you get past that line it's fun and it doesn't get any better than this guy
arleco12 And i totally agree. TL is very good for sure, but just see Dave weclke before and for me TL is soulless, just a prefect drum machine but no musicallity..
arleco12 well, he is a machine
arleco12 since I love most of the extreme metal bands this guy is special among the other drummers lol. And also using double kick like this requires high technique because it means more combination. But you are so right when you said double bass kills solo especially in jazz, funk, blues or any other non metal genres. After a point tastes in music decides which one is better in that persons opinion I guess..
4:17 that just shows me how independent he really is. i thought that was it then he added a groove...just amazing
I love Thomas Lang but I'm just so damn tired of stick tricks. Tricks are for circus people. I'm just sayin. Peace
Unbelievable skills and passion
I give up! Maybe I should just stop drumming cause this guy makes me look no better than a three year old.
So much actual rudimental drumming and display of technique I love it!
I've never been so uninterested in such an amazing musician. Brilliant yet utterly boring to listen to - how's that even possible ....
I agree.
i feel like 90% of what he plays is for show. i couldn't care less about him honestly.
You guy's obviously aren't fucking drummer's then, which this stuff is catered too.
Ah John , no need to be such a child and presume things you don't know about just because someone else has an opinion you don't like. Would you prefer we all just say stuff you approve of? There's always one of you sad guys out there.....
Dervish Capkiner Oh yeah, right.
