Has anyone here ever cleaned out your parents' home after they died? I did and the process taught me many, many lessons. One of those lessons was, "For goodness sake! Use this beautiful plate/stemware/textile/candleholder/etc NOW while you are alive and your eyes can alight on this pretty little thing to bring you cheer daily." So many times I felt so awful for how my mother and father denied themselves the "right" to use the "good stuff" (after we were grown and wouldn't break it) as I dusted off decades of grime from their box or container in the basement. I'm not talking designer-expensive items either, just beautiful designs or unique craft, it doesn't have to be Sotheby's or Christie's level. Kids will make their own legacies; use the stuff you love now and appreciate it, even if - especially if -it's the very "special" and beautiful stuff
So true. Enjoy the things that make you happy. I remember reading something that said, use all your 'best' china and glasses when you have friends over for dinner, it will make them feel special that you want to share it with them. Dont keep it just for Christmas I have always remembered it, and use our wedding china and glasses for dinner get togethers. It makes me so happy to see them used and enjoyed 😊

Yes, I did that last year after my mom passed. I not only discovered that my parents kept every single piece of paper that ever crossed their path, but that all the quality things they meticulously curated in their home over their course of their marriage, for the most part had little value to others in the end. Things that are typically used for special occasions like a China set or Silver Service (obviously real silver has value but many of those weren't pure. I agree with the thought to enjoy the nice things as often as possible - don't save them. What are you waiting for? Make every day special if you like.

Someone has probably already mentioned this but I think that fresh flowers should be on this list. Another thing that comes to mind is, a centerpiece on the dining table. Maybe just a table runner with a nice bowl and a pair of stylish candlesticks-but the dining table has a finished and put together feel.

@@lauries2858 Agree...but don't do all that much of it! I do the coffee table books and the towels, only to be touched by guests lol, and candles that are ornamental, never lit! I do have a lovely fruit bowl always out, usually fruit in it....so maybe a bit stylish? Maybe not:)
Bottom line - stylish people enjoy EVERY DAY life and not just for "special occasions". It's a lifestyle where they take out a pretty mug and a stylish candle to have a moment of beautiful savoring!

I always notice that stylish people will always have something they’ve brought with them while traveling and they’ll have a good story behind these items. It makes for a great conversation piece and adds character to the space. Thumbs up to that 👍🏼

Love the list, I was saying "Yes!" to the screen as I was watching. My mother did the same thing with the holiday towels - look don't touch! That story cracked me up. I would also add coasters, pretty cache pots for plants (no plastic nursery pots) and unique/thoughtful/coordinated lighting in a room (no ceiling boob lights).

I don't have 7 and 8. I don't drink wine and I only use wreaths during Christmas. I love tea so I have several vintage English tea sets and tiered trays in lieu of stemware. I think stylish people always have fresh flowers in their foyer, dining or living room.
Missing a truly important item, fresh florals whether it's from your garden, designer created from florist, from a grocery store, blooming bulbs from a nursery. Any fresh, live greenery seasonally inspired, from $0-$100's equally says high style!

Ohmygosh! I was at the video's halfway point, having hit EVERY ONE, thinking, "Surely I'll miss some of the remaining items..." No! I couldn't believe it. I hit every single one! I watched this video after I had seen your video on how to make your house look not "dated". My house did not match any of the dated decors you showed. I always incorporate things I just like-- regardless of whatever is trending. Mostly, however, I shop estate sales and get really nice pieces from previous times. Going to these sales, you begin to see which things never go out of style, plus find very nice items that you might not otherwise be able to afford--the ones that really add the style to my home! I'm thinking that all of my thriftiness, strong will, and Art training has served me well! Thanks! That was fun!

Love that you mentioned stemware. I worked for a wine distributor and we sold Riedel wine glasses and bar ware. I use them almost exclusively at home.
Even if you don’t want to invest in higher end wine glasses, just getting rid of colored or painted glasses will be an improvement!
One of the things I always notice in stylish homes, are their rugs! I love rugs! I think you two should do a Part 2!
Cloth napkins, shams, good coat hangers, fresh flowers, coffee cups/tea cups rather than mugs (good catch on the stemware Jack!), soft background music.... and a butler (now called House Managers). Great show today.... funny.... and sweet comment about being out of her league.

Organize, no on the pillow shams, the ruffle type. And yes on the coffee tea cups and saucers. I also love a good salt cellar and I also have an assortment of cloth dinner napkins.
Cloth napkins... you can even curate a collection of multiple patterns you find on sale. I started by buying sale napkins that were not a set and I use them all the time! They elevate ANYTHING you are eating or drinking. I even have my eclectic set at my desk for work. Try it ... I promise... even a PB & J sandwich is better with a cloth napkin.
A stylish home always has beautifully large exotic plants (real ones) ! You two are enjoyable to watch ♥️ Who knew I was so stylish! Lol
My mother taught me these things. She was very stylish and old school when it came to etiquette. Thanks mom! ❤️ And one thing not mentioned because its not always financially feasible, are slipcovers for upholstered pieces, to change things up. Mom always had slipcovers for her accent chairs ❤️.

I would say in addition to the pretty hand towels stylish people also have have pretty disposable hand napkins in beautiful napkin holders. Which is nice to have when you don't want to always use someone else's towels.

@@designdoctor247 I'm sitting here with overflowing bowls of fresh tomatoes, muffins which just came out of the oven, with just made plum/blackberry jam, big vases of zinnias and sunflowers. Only thing is I refuse to drink tea from a mug- it has to come from a pot, with a china cup and saucer (which were given to me years ago by an elderly lady)... and always loose tea with a silver strainer :)

Agree, another one fresh flowers. Doesn't have to be expensive, could be a cut flowers from the yard. Years ago I worked at a florist, stylist clients had a standard fresh flower delivery weekly for their homes. Now we have so many options for purchasing either florist, grocery store , Farmers Market, etc...
I would add candleholders to the list. I’ve seen some amazing candleholders when attending various dinner parties.

Stylish people have original art pieces with a cool back story. And awesome REAL plants or flowers... Real flowers is HUGE.......can even tell you the plants scientific names and all. They also have an instrument on display somewhere in the house... Typically a piano
They're also knowledgeable. Love to hear of their travels and life experiences. Their homes are an extension of who they are. I love when you can see a person's home and see them....super cool 🥰

My additions for part 2 (you must do part 2!): 1. Stylish candleholders (preferably antique- brass, crystal or sculptural from an artist) 2. A quality small rug- Turkish, kilim or animal Felt/pelt
3. A trey on the coffee table... with chachkes inside like a plant, candle, crystal etc. 4. A displayed collection that displays your passion and character- can be a musical instrument or a sport's car collection. 5. Plant or plants that shows you can keep something alive. 6. A Nice bathroom shower curtain and speaking of which, an immaculately clean bathroom when guests come by. stylish people are neat. 7. A beautiful bed cover/ top blanket and a soft comfy bed and surrounding you want to sink into and fall asleep in, even if you don't live in that stylish home. A bed skirt is a bonus. 8. Upgraded Picture frames and artwork. A mix of old and new- in the styles of the art and the frame. if a DIY art is thrown in there- even better. 9. A lot of natural materials: Wood, Straw, Leather, Wool, Cotton. 10. A friendly, welcoming co-host animal. Soft and fuzzy or feathered, purring, tail wagging, singing or shiny and swimming in a beautiful tank. Definitely not a must, but can add a lot of style and warmth to a home and endless shenanigans and entertainment to the guests. 11. If you cannot have animals- you can have a very manicured front door area. Potted plants etc.
