Tip for re-using old blankets - If you live in a cold climate, store one in your trunk in case you get stuck on the side of the road or need to warm up a passenger from being outside too long. Can also work as an impromptu picnic blanket!
Or if you have to change a tire and need sth to lie down on/need to protect your clothes, so: yes, great and valid tip!
Also the animal shelter uses old blankets and old towels.🐶🐱
Yes, I've always carried a blanket in the boot of the car and a shovel too in the winter. Been stuck in snow far too often.
I once passed by a minor accident where the victims were standing outside their vehicles. As I drove along, it dawned on me that it was 20 degrees outside, and the victims didn't even appear to be wearing jackets. I turned around and left them a large throw that I had in my car. I knew I would never see it again, but seeing them standing there, there was no way I would've kept it. We live in a very small community, so apparently, the victims recognized me and later returned the throw, thanking me for the act of kindness. Lesson learned. Keep throws, a couple of old towels, a small bag of pet food, and other things like that in your car that you might glean from making your living space look classier.

I have my favorite times with family displayed in my hallway and it makes me happy!
I have framed my granddaughters paintings from before kindergarten through hi-school. But I’ve had them framed professionally. (And it was not inexpensive, but worth it” When I was in the shop other customers commented that they thought they were done by professional artists. Of course not all are “masterpieces”! 😂And they are not all over my home, but putting them in certain rooms in my home, adds love and beauty!Also the girls 20 years, later still love to see their “masterpieces” hung stylishly in my home! 😉
Valentina, I enjoy your videos and useful tips. However, one of the things I’ve noticed lately on your videos and on HGTV is the use of “art” to complement a design rather than as a celebration of creativity or something that resonates with the owner. You recommended that people go to Crate & Barrel or Pottery Barn. However, you never mentioned supporting talented local artists or even commissioning a local artist to paint something that does go with/creates a color scheme. Buying something mass produced for a department store can rarely replace the visceral reaction you get when you fall in love with an original piece of art that is one of a kind. Local artists need our support and high quality pieces can be bought for a fraction of the cost of something at Pottery Barn.
Well said. Ikea, Target, Pottery Barn art 🤮 it says hi I'm a sheep that has no sense of what I like I just picked the picture that matched my other decor from World Market. Not ok.
Oftentimes I think these people get kickback from the sheep stores like Pottery Barn or something. It's my personal choice to reduce waste by buying second hand goods so I don't shop there for much of anything but especially art. I'd rather have a bare wall. Lol

Those mass produced pieces are not art in my opinion. Many people buy pieces that “go” with their decor theme and color, not pieces that have meaning to them. A house without family photos is NOT a home.
Exactly! I buy art that means something to me and always from the artist. I much prefer to have art that says who i am, rather than a mass produced item that says cheap!
@@mchoe5890 I mostly agree and slightly disagree. I don’t like to “decorate “ with family photos. I display them in areas that are FOR family, such as down hallways that lead to the bedrooms or a few, small, tastefully framed on hard surfaces scattered around. But my main art is directly from artists. Nothing mass produced. I buy them on Etsy , from festivals or even Facebook market or others were done by friends who are amazing artists.

Anyone who has an issue with family photos and wanting to see loved ones while in your own home daily has missed the point of life. Finding joy from seeing loved ones, both living and deceased opposed to trying to find joy and self esteem from falsely thinking people will see you a certain way shows a well-adjusted, selfg confidemt person with healthy loving relationships who understands what truly matters in life. You keep looking at your loved ones and feel happy!! 💓

The key is to use matching frames high quality and black and white not too many either. But to have none??? Thats not a home. Only exceptions if you are selling your home nothing personal should be out
@@raquellambropoulos279 When I sold my home I left all my framed personal and religious photos on the walls where they have always been. I had multiple people who wanted my home and went for over ask so it wasn’t a deterrent at all 🙂♥️ I think it depends how they are displayed.

VERY controversial lolololololol Here in Palm Beach if the home is beautiful and tastefully decorated no one is focused on a family photo gallery wall. People who have attempted to paint some abstract art on a white Michaels canvas is tackier than a framed gallery wall of personal photos any day 😉♥️ Professionally framed, painted or photographic art is much classier than any DYI art.
Less clutter definitely has an impact on the space. I decluttered and cleaned my kitchen really nicely just yesterday ago and between my husband and kids, it was trashed by the time I woke up this morning. At least with less clutter, I can put it back to rights in about 10 minutes.
If you have old blanket that you don’t want, donate them to an animal shelter.
I did that recently, and they were really happy with them ^^

Our dining room table is near-sacred. It's a gorgeous dark classic wood that we bought at age 24 and I'll never regret. We have a lovely sit-down lunch and dinner everyday because my husband works at home, and I want to instill respect for quality food and good manners to our kids (8, 4 and one on the way). We homeschool at our table. We have neighbors and friend from church over every few Sundays just to build community. My dining table is very important to me because of what it symbolizes.

Real plates and cloth napkins for most meals with fresh flowers in the center, often. I also homeschool our three kids. These are the good ‘ol days, when we take time to connect and enjoy each day together.
Ditto, I was going to sell our solid cherry wood table bc we moved into a home that is a bit small for the table but I just can’t let it go. We also have the buffet table that matches. We have dinners there, my 3yo son has grown up w this table and I’m convinced it can withstand anything lol. They will probably be much more difficult to come by in the future. I to have a dining table that I’ve been caring around with me since I was 28. I am now 62 and still have my family dining table. It’s heavier than any table I’ve had to move. The chairs are gone but the table is still going strong. I’m in the process of building a small home in this home will be built around that table. When my children were young we sat around that table. My children did their homework at that table. We did school projects at that table. That table has many memories
I'm not a fan of family photos on the wall or having them displayed during a showing. I do, however, think it's fine to have them displayed in a dedicated area, on a bookshelf etc. Family photos gives the feel that people actually live in the home, and are filled with memories. I'm a sentimental type person, so that is just my opinion. I also think filling walls with mass-produced art work cheapens the look of a home. There are so many affordable options for unique wall art available, etsy, local aspiring artist etc. The other things you mentioned I agree with you 100%. A clean home makes for an inviting home.

When we sold our first house many years ago, the final selling point was a personal picture of us in Bermuda. They had been to the exact spot, recognized it, and decided our house was their new home!
Oh My Goodness, I brought my pictures down to paint and I thought I was a bad grandma because I don't want them back on the wall! Glad I'm not alone...
Oh, Oh, Oh... If you're going for a more expensive look, I definitely agrees with everything, including family picture. But... I want to tell you about one exception. I was on a tour of lofts in our town. One of the lofts was owned by a single guy in his 40s-50s. I loved his place. It was very industrial with a mostly black, gray and silver color scheme, Concrete counter tops throughout, all very sleek. AND, there was a gallery wall as you entered, a large collection of small black and white family pictures. It was unexpected and added just the right touch. It has been years since I saw it and it is still one of my favorite interior memories. Thanks for the video, Valentina!

I love staging homes, but when it comes to living in a home, as beautiful as I want it to be, if it’s not personal, with family pics to warm me or just make me smile, I might as well be in YOUR home or someone’s office.

Maybe try adding one 2 amall antique frames on a table instead of family photos on walls. The way you chose color nand decor of your home is not the same as me so why would you feel likemyounare in someone else's home . There are tens on ways other than photos to personalise a space.

Not everyone is meant to live in expensive looking homes.
We have 7 children and a zero clutter/zero family photos home. I’m married to a professional concept artist, I agree with these tips. 😉 Everyone is shocked that we keep it so clean. And it makes our home easy/peaceful. Draws attention to the people in it and the gardens surrounding it.
I agree with you! We have no personal photos anywhere, except 3 graduation photos of our 3 children. And even then, they are on one shelf high up in our personal office. Easily removed if needed. That’s all we need!

@@therealnancybee710 When you’ve lived with a hoarder family member, you’ll understand. I’ve always been a simple and minimal person, my cabinets only have 6 plates, six cups, 6 coffee mugs, ect. Clutter everywhere makes my mind cluttery. Family photos are a thing of the past. If I really want to see photos, that is what my cell phone is for. Living a minimalist life is the BEST for me!

I agree with the family photos advice. Years ago I heard a decorator say, "Art on the walls, photos on a table." Family photos in lovely silver frames on a side table can work, but never groupings of the grandkids in various frame sizes on the walls, Grandma style. One exception may be black and white professionally taken photographs of family members done as an art installation. I've seen this and it can look lovely if done properly. I don’t like to see family photos in social spaces in a home. Perhaps some small photos on a side table or tastefully arranged on a dresser in a bedroom.

While I can see black and white family photos being suitable for aesthetics, it is however pretty stigmatised in my culture - black and white photos are pretty much for dead ppl only 😅

My husband and I have some beautiful, expensively-framed artwork. It was very affordable because we bought all of it from the artists, already beautifully framed. Juried art festivals are great places to buy original, framed, affordable pieces.
I *totally* agree if I'm selling my home as few personal items as possible should be out-that includes family photos. Buuuut I respectfully disagree, I live in my home, not an art gallery.

I love having a formal dining room in my house. I know the trend is to have everything open and people don’t use their dining rooms anymore but I can’t imagine! I bought a beautiful custom made Amish dining room table and it is so beautiful! My dad also made me a beautiful buffet where I store all of my nicer dishes and cutlery for entertainment. We eat dinner in there as much as possible and we have a large bay window overlooking our front garden. We never leave clutter there. I always have some kind of decoration in the middle of the table even if it’s just a vase with some flowers. I also would mention, just changing some light fixtures in your home can also make a huge difference in your home. I changed all of the fixtures in my house as soon as we moved in. I bought all of the new fixtures from Lowe’s and Home Depot and they made a world of difference in my home!
Great video! I put my yard trimmings in a large vase and especially love the way Japanese maple branches look. Both my grandmothers always said to decorate with art in the spaces where one entertains guests and keep family photos small and in other rooms. I do want to add that I hope people will buy from artists. It’s hard to make a living and there is some wonderful, original art to be found.
I think a good compromise for the family photos is if they're professionally taken you can print them out in black and white and that way they look kind of artsy, but I also agree that family pictures would work better in a hallway or the staircase, not main living areas.
If I were selling my home I would take down family photos because people do like a home they can see themselves in. If I’m not selling my home then professionally taken pictures is a nice upgrade. A good photographer can turn family photos into pieces of art.

@@aprilmorgan9807 not always the case. I sold for way over ask and had multiple offers with my professionally framed personal and religious photos hanging in my home where they have always been. That’s just something that’s recommended but not always a true statement.

Valentina, I have watched you for a long time and 99.9% of the time, I agree with your decorating suggestions and have many of the same things in my home. However, when you said that hanging family photos cheapens a space, you lost me. I am not talking about staging a home for sale, where I agree that all personal items (including family photos) should be removed. I am talking about a home where people actually live. Having said that, I would agree that how you display family photos and personal items can enhance a space or cheapen it, depending upon how it is done. I have two very small baby photos of my sons in tiny beautiful frames that sit in the corner of my powder room vanity. They give me joy each time I see them. I have other photos throughout my home that bring back memories of a trip to France, a wonderful Christmas, etc. I frame them nicely and the displayed photos are carefully curated. I also have a considerable collection of original paintings that I have acquired over the years. I purchase pieces that I love and the combination of it all brings me much pleasure. Yes, my coffee tables have trays with items and books that I love along with plants and flowers. I believe that all of this makes a house a welcoming home to those who live there and to those that visit. (Sorry, just realized how long this is!)
I agree! When you have things you value and treat them like they are valuable to you, like nicely framed baby pictures, they will never cheapen your house. They give a homey, loving, comfortable feel and visitors will notice in a positive way.

I agree with you. In fact I chose black and white photos of my family, had them framed in black and made a gallery wall in the kitchen eating area. I use my dining room for eating everyday, not for just special occasions, heck we are special and it is a good family time.
Cheryl I really understand what you mean about the family photos, I had to chose a couple of my son and daughter to keep next to my heart, on the other hand my husband is an artist and paints in all sizes. Just imagine how my home was, I said was because we remodeled everything that we barely are finishing arranging things around. Yes he had to put many paintings in storage. However I keep what I love including photos. ❤️❤️

I have photos taken by professional photographer that look really high end.
But I also don't care if they make my home look cheaper.
Such photos in silver frames are typical in old money homes - I just ignore some of this advice. I don’t wNt to live in a place that looks like a hotel - impersonal with mass-market “art”.
To be honest, I am not so crazy about my home looking expensive. I want it to look stylish, comfortable, alive and express my personality.
I agree about the family photos too. Since I do like seeing them tho I think a option of putting them in the kitchen, hallway or a bedroom is a good alternative. Leave the art for the living room and dining room

You can use only the nicer important photos and get high-quality frames for them. I use photos of my garden instead of art and its very special for us. We have the cutest photo of our chickens, when they were babies, from 2020.
I agree not on the walls, I’m ok on a hallway but not too many, I buy nice frames and display just a couple on an end table.
I absolutely agree with the family pictures tip ❤️ I guess they shouldn't be the first thing your guests should see and they are better at a more intimate yet open space of your home.
I live in a small home with a limited amount of flat surfaces - which I keep clutter free and curated! So I have a gallery wall in my bedroom where I hang black frames for my black and white photos of family. My family is everything and this is just for me.
The smell of the house makes a big difference also. I am a Realtor and can smell old spaces.

One thing that helps me "see" a room from a different perspective is taking a photo of a room with my phone. Then view the photo. I can usually see clearly what needs to go and what can stay ( or moved around).
You have great tips but I do display family photos in my family room on one wall. They are all framed in the same type of frame. When my grandkids come visit they love seeing a special photo of them hanging on my wall. Now if I were selling my home, then yes, all the personal items in my home would be packed away. So that the perspective buyer can picture themselves living in my home. I've owned lots of properties in my life and have always staged my homes. The first one person/persons that have seen them bought them.
I do have to comment on the room you were standing in. This is my opinion so please take it as such. Your walls are painted that dark hipster blue ( looks blue on my tv) and what pops out to me are the door hinges and doorknobs and not the artwork. And the beautiful raised paneling (sorry can't think of the correct name atm) is painted the same blue. Why not a different color to bring out the beauty of it? Again, its just my opinion.

I don't like the idea of strangers viewing my home for sale and seeing my children, grandchildren and personal things especially when they already know my address. It sounds a bit paranoid but crimes have been committed after viewings.
I am so thrilled to have found you today! I read many years ago that a lot of people go on vacation to get away from their clutter, etc. So I now live keeping my own home 'staged'. I don't have small kids and I know everyone cannot. I want the feeling that I'm on vacation in a luxury suite. My family photos are in a mix of beautiful frames, each is small, and they sit on a large antique buffet in the back of the living room - not hanging on the walls. If someone wants to walk over to them and take a look, that’s their choice. This enables me to change the photos out as time goes by if that’s what I want. My husband is a photographer and my mother was an artist, and their things hang on the walls in prominent places. Other artists things fill in the gaps around the house. This works for me. 😊
Old blankets usually end up in my kid's playroom for forts. And all beds, even my preschooler's and 1st grader's beds, have decorative pillows and a throw blanket on them. There's nothing more calming at night than a tidy and inviting bed! 😊

A photo gallery wall as a focal point in a room is like someone saying “Hey! Look at this!” And then proceeding to tell you five different mini-stories at once. It’s a lot for the eye to take in at once. That’s why I prefer them in hallways

I worked for a professional portrait photographer for years and sadly it changed the way in see professional family photos. So often contrived and excessively twee. I always cringe when I see them hanging on living room walls.
I love your wall-art approach to staging a house for sale. A warm & inviting pretty home, TO SELL, can be created without the family headshots. When not selling, by all means display the precious family photos wherever & however. 😊
I am always appalled, when I look at photos for listed houses, by the number of places with listing photos showing every room filled with clutter - dining tables with dishes, piles of clothing, messy beds and crowded closets. I'm getting ready to sell my house next year and getting rid of my excess stuff is my absolute top priority! As for art, I'm a bit of a snob - my art isn't expensive but it's all individual works by artists, not mass-produced from a chain store.
Im glad to see this comment about houses on the market an shocked at the photos in listing showing messes ,,, let alone going to see these homes...I do not understand why some realtors regardless if you can professionally have home staged Do Not tell their home seller these need too be clean before I can even take photos to list it appalls me ...
I do however understand some may not have the means to putchase things to spruce it up..But they can certainly clean it up...
On the subject of family photos , I do find it rude too think if living in my home not selling it that somebody finds it cheapens home, (Rather rude comment I believe)..On the other hand when selling our first home way back when the realtor did have us remove our gallery hall of family photos why : so the prospective buyers were not looking at your family an imagining themselves in your home this is a good a steadfast tip that should be followed I believe...Also had us pack up our nic nacs an same reason...What I found was there was less to pick when home sold ! Yeah
But for most I wish she do a video for realtitors an people selling to watch about the junk an untidy homes I've seen lisited is amazing too think somebody would wanna buy it with it being trashed...I personally have walked out of a few homes over yrs when looking to buy when I've seen nasty messes ! Why cause if they have no respect to clean it up to sell what else is wrong w home they haven't taken care of ....
I’m also a Realtor and that’s one of my pet peeves. A towel thrown over a bed post, clutter everywhere and toilet seats up. Even saw a pic with a floater one time. Absolutely lazy and embarrassing to my profession.

I just sold my house and before it went on the market, I took ALL family photos off the walls. In fact, all art and let the stagers put whatever they wanted. It was GORGEOUS! I don't think I'll put pictures or anything on the walls in my new house. The clean, uncluttered look is timeless. My kids are older anyway.

You were extremely lucky! I D cluttered and cleaned everything down to a minimalist look before the stagers came in. They put up some ugly artwork and even plastic flowers on the kitchen table. I thought it looked terrible. There were comments at showings that said that the house looked like it had been staged. And it sure did. Anyway it’s sold right away in this market they usually do. But my experience was not that great I was not impressed at all.
I agree with all tips except the family pictures. I love having pictures of family memories hanging on my wall. It brings me joy and that's what's important. I don't decorate for people, I decorate for me and my family. Just my personal opinion.
Hello, I find your design shows informative because of your pre situation as a host. The the 9 mistakes kitchen episode challenged everyone to look around. My husband & I are70+. I am that person who is for putting away; that has become increasingly difficult. The mixer remains on the counter because the knees don't bend and back pains are over-the-top. Point being perhaps you could design a show for the viewer who has experienced physical change in their life style. BTW, I buy 2 different color sponges because my husband would use the same one to wipe counter as well as the floor. Thank you, Sandee
Thanks, Sandee, I do the same thing with the two colors of sponges! One doesn't get chemicals on it other than soap, so it is good for the cutting board, wiping counters. The other one can get cleansers and be used for greasy dirt, floor spills, etc. When I put stuff away that has been sitting on my kitchen counter and then come back in the room later, I think the cleaners have come by :) Makes such a difference. Do what works for you -- I totally get arthritis and other aging pains. If you're staging your home, then you can get crazy with putting everything away.

I Love all your tips, especially taking away the family photos, I used to have a wall dedicated to my family photos and when we renovated I put them all away and changed it up with art work and it made such a beautiful difference, I see my family enough Lol 😂 that I don’t need them hanging on my walls anymore. Great tips!!! I’m a realtor in Houston and give the same advice on family photos, when selling a home. Even in beautifully staged homes, family photos are a distraction. Buyers spend more time looking at the cute kids and awesome vacation spots, then imagining themselves living in the house. Valentina, keep teaching!!! Also, that jacket is fabulous!!
I love that you SAID IT!!! Yessss please call my mom and tell her to take down ALL of her wall art of family photosss! Hahaha I’m 50 and I don’t need everyone to see what my 80s school pics looked like LOL. I do have a family photo gallery but they are all black and white in my stairways and a few 7x5 in framed on my built ins. Seriously!! She has the entire family albums on the wall like it’s a museum.

I just sold our home and I only had family pictures in bedrooms. The realtor wanted me to remove them all. Nothing personal showing. I am not big on showcasing many family pics around the house. If you have a home office placing small frames do look nice in this space.
I agree, when selling, all personal pics and trophies need to be packed away. If you are living there, arrange personal pics in a well designed not too many, area.

You have some good ideas about updating a home's look. Your own house, however, looks stark and without any personality.Please keep in mind that decore varies based on where you live. We changed our entire style of decorating after moving from the North to the tropics. Many things to consider. Your black and white would not work here. Some tips are good, though.
The tip are good and yes they are fun. Luckily I want to stay in my home however, I want it to look luxurious. So love tips - I haven’t got any blankets/throws.... yet 👍🏽😄
I totally agree, pictures of family belongs in a certain area of the home like the bedroom and not the main areas of the home like the living room.

I agree and actually I wouldn't mind beautiful tastefully sized portraits but they are always giant pictures of their kids in a sports uniform or goofy family picture or a GIANT wedding picture in the living room 30 years after they are married.

I have large photos of my kids that have been taken over the years. They are displayed in an upstairs hall/stairwell. I know they are not in style but I love them and my kids significant others love seeing them. I have moved several times and I also packed them up along with many other things to show my house. I like to live with my granny’s things around me but I understand I have to put them up when I sell a home. When selling a house, think one beautiful thing on any flat surface. Also, I love sitting at the dining room table using China and silver - I think it should be an everyday or at least weekly event.
I agree about the family pictures in a 'public' space like the living room or powder room. But they're wonderful in a home office/work area and in bedrooms/dressing rooms.

I have a family picture gallery in a mud room area that leads to an in-law suite that I built for my parents. I wanted them to feel at home and comfortable. The photos are old black and whites and they range from 1922 to 1964. Mt parents are both gone now and when I look at my wall I remember each family member and appreciate how fleeting life really is. I 100% agree that to stage a house they should be gone!

I don’t even like family pics in a bedroom. I don’t want my kids pictures anywhere near my bed (wink wink) The only place I have personal pictures is in my office. It’s where we have our vacation photos and memorabilia from cruises. It’s themed and gaudy 🤣 but that’s what I was going for.
I would add to the list, worn out ratty bathmat, towels and used bars of soap. In addition to crowed showers of products!
I totally agree about family photos looking cheap. I had a neighbor who had 100’s of photos of her kids everywhere in the house. I remember thinking it was too much and made the house look chintzy
Feather filled throw pillows are great! You can plump them up. You can also buy a new cover to update.
I think what you’re saying is completely true. I love family photos displayed and I have several (black and white on canvas) of my children because I can’t imagine a piece of art making me smile as much as my own children, but I agree my house would look more designed and stylish if I just used artwork. I would put the family photos in storage and swap out for generic art if I was selling my house. I love your content, thank you. X

Thank you for helping me not feel guilty about putting away photos. Just a couple days ago I looked around my place and there's family photos on every wall, and on every piece of furniture. With an extensive family, and some family squabbles lately it made me ask myself why I have all these family photos here anyway because all they do is create clutter. I had the thought of just boxing them all up and putting them away, at least for a while, so that I can declutter and start over. I might like not having family photos all over. I can take the photos out of the frames and put them in photo boxes, so I still have them, they're just not cluttering up everything, including the refrigerator. I was feeling a bit guilty about it, but you just gave me permission, confirmation that what I was considering was the right thing to do. Yeah! I feel liberated already, and I haven't even begun the task yet!

Natural fabrics and materials have a tendency to look more expensive. For example one woolen blanket instead of several plastic ones. Or we own only two sets of pillowcases and bedsheets, but those are linnen. And a real wooden table can look gorgeous for generations!
I love a nicely designed coffee table as well. I bought the two-level glass and iron one from Pottery Barn and have several items of interest on the bottom shelf. Then on the top level, I have that faux jade plant that you showcased in the middle to add some height! That plant is so beautiful and reasonably priced. I'm thinking about adding another one in my kitchen. I'm horrible with keeping plants alive, so besides the faux plants, I've found real orchids to be easy to keep alive and they add such a nice softness and design. Just 3 ice cubes a week to water them- so simple.

great vlog, it was all great advice and "i" loved it. After having put some houses through their paces. The very first tip I was given is that "personal things are for private spaces". Before even the agent is called, I go through everything 3 times, that's everything. Draws, cupboards shelves etc. I do my cleanse donates and on the last run through I place a proper packing box an paper in several areas and start an initial pack, label and store. I do this because I have leant that people like to open those unexpected cupboards and draws where photos and personal keep sakes have been slipped into. By the time the agent arrives the place looks wonderful. By the time the house goes on the market it looks stunning. Cheers from Melbourne Kim
I personally don’t like family photos displayed on walls. For those who want their family photos around, how about one of those digital pictures frames that rotate pictures? Set on the kitchen counter or in an office perhaps, you can see them all the time. And you get to see more pictures. To me it’s the perfect solution. Great video. Great outfit and hair.
Starts off with “free or really cheap things you can do” …. buy furniture with drawers and big baskets, lol!!! Her idea of free and cheap is different than mine, lol.
I only hang large pieces of original artwork on my walls; they cost quite a bit and may not be to everyone's taste - but I feel they make the house look so much classier and more interesting, and most importantly - I feel happy looking at them!
Again great advice! I have a tip. I had a large portrait of my mother-in-law which my husband couldn’t give away. It had a beautiful heavy gold frame. So I ordered from Amazon sticky blackboard paper and covered the glass ( and picture) with it. I now have a beautiful blackboard for my office and hubby didn’t mind. 😊

The thing about personal photos is soooo true! If they need to be there, then make sure you do the European antique chic and put them in silver frames of different sizes and styles and dress them up carefully displayed on an antique chest or such, that is what royalty would do… but putting family photos and blowups of holiday photos on the walls really looks super cheap…
I had never heard of Home Stagers until I met someone from the U.S. about 40 years ago and that was what her mum did. I live in the U.K. where we don't have them but I thought what a great job to have. I have seen so many homes for sale on Estate agents websites where the home owners haven't even cleaned and tidied their homes before any photographs were taken and they expect to get top price. What you have said is just basic common sense but this video should be made compulsory watching for all people about to sell their homes. Totally agree about family photos hung on walls, have always thought it just looks so bad. Great video xx
The home I live in, I am convinced, had not been cleaned or vacuumed for 20 years before I bought it. There was a spot where the carpet and pad were worn through and you could see the slab. Dirty underwear on floors, pile of dishes in the sink. But I could see the great bones (and great view) and bought the house.
Great tips. I’m glad that I’ve addressed the shoes in entryway. The dining table is a challenge because I set up my workstation there but I put all of it away Friday. Eliminating clutter is a constant but I’m improving. Good Fake greenery can be expensive. Mixing small fake greenery with real plants can help fill in voids. I’m a work in progress. My home is a work in progress. Thanks Mr. & Ms. V for stimulating the creative genes in me.

Two of my favorites, pillows and blankets, definately upgrade/uplift any space.
In Australia we call them cushions and throw rugs, or throws. Sounds classier than 'blanket'.
I think an issue with family photos is they’re often generic and posed. I love seeing a more artfully constructed photograph, such as candid shots or landscapes that also happen to have someone in it (maybe at a distance.) But I agree with the concept in general, to consider whether you may see it at an art exhibit.

These were all spot on! I agree with you on the family photos. I think incorporating them into more personal spaces is a better idea such as your desk or in the bedroom. Its the style of the photography when it comes to family photos that usually makes it look dated or dare I say, cheap. Great post!
I removed the coffee table from the center of the living room and replaced it with 3 Room & Board side tables. Then brought the seating closer. I hate huge TVs in the living room. Thanks for your tips!
Nobody asked but, what I see in most of the vids on decorating is nothing but wall decor, not art but wall decor and there is a difference. The DIY 'art work' ought to be described as wall decor as art as in ART is a totally different animal. Note, it is always a DIY 'abstract' painting, why not a DIY landscape or portrait? I believe the answer is obvious. The key phrase is ABSTRACT as it appears people doing this believe abstraction only requires splashing paint on a canvas in whatever way. Anyone that believes abstraction is not laborious, thoughtful, skilled, and an emotionally charged creation lacks an understanding of art. I hope no one is offended by this comment as it is not my intention, I simply wish to make a clarification that should be understood as to believe that anyone can DIY an abstract work of art is devaluing the work of artists that work in that genre. Family photos, I place in the bedroom, or if it is on the more public accessed areas, I chose black and white or sepia, professionally taken photographs of my ancestors. I do have some casual photos in my kitchen. One key thing is to place them in quality frames.
Smartest reply I ever read. I have a professional abstract painter friend and it’s not cheap or easy to make. And it takes lots of skill and time.
I'm an abstract artist and a piece can take me weeks, even months depending on my layers. The truth is it can take years to learn a painting skill that takes 20 minutes to execute. That's why most DIY art looks so flat and childish - depth and composition are usually missing. But, maybe trying a painting will open the door to understanding art or even to taking up painting.
I want to like this comment like 200 times. I am an artist myself and if I hear "get your art from homegoods (only if you reaaally love it please)" or "just paint abstract stuff yourself" a piece of my soul dies a little bit. It is like when you are in a museum with abstract pieces and people say the inevitable "haha, I could do that myself, why do people pay so much for this". Well most probably you can't or you did not because this kind of art does not appeal to you.
Abstract art requires as much knowledge of composition, color theory, art history, materials etc as non-abstract art.
I love the tip on adding a beautiful blanket. I ordered a Turkish blanket on Etsy and it has upgraded my whole space. It’s super soft and the design adds a pop of visual texture.

If you buy quality instead of fashion then you don't have to re do your home all the time, the base of the home should be timeless and as expensive as you can afford, a good wood floor and a great rug then again as good a sofa as you can afford. a good idea for a sofa is to buy one at auction that you like as a shape and spend on a loose cover then high end remnants for pillows in whatever them you are going for. You can make lamps from almost anything these days but the shades you can make or have made, not white or bland either. As for objects, if you are not sure then go for one or two striking antique pieces, an old Indian coffer or piece of carving is always classic, no buddahs unless really old. A heavy cristal bowl for fruit or a brass bowl or asian porcelain even chipped and full of dried flowers. Odd chairs, not everything matching, easy to pick up and have restored. For drapes better to have a lot of washed linen then two strip of something expensive. If you want to walk down the high street and furnish your home with little effort then obviously you will not get the originality and layering of good taste, you will get someone else's idea of good taste, something that usually has filtered down the ladder from some original thought. It's certainly not about how much it costs or how much it's worth. Throw something mad into the mix to shake it up but please no stuffed animals and balloon figures !
