@@neonboy1998 First of all, i just don't see why you felt the need to be sexist and act like an immature teenager. secondly, this video, and the original comment, is completely unrelated to feminism.
@da3n3ra__ my body my rules. If you spreading your legs for money because its ur rules and ur a hoe you should know others also have "rules" of their own whether it involves killing prostitutes etc
There is no such thing as "sex work" and it shouldn't be defended. The people who take up such work are being done an injustice, the fact that such dehumanizing and degrading "work" is still around is an embarrassment and an abomination. No human being should ever have to subject themselves to that industry.
@@CatholicCarlismEnjoyer "sex worker" doesn't only refer to prostitutes -- it can also refers to strippers, dancers, models, escorts... and they absolutely SHOULD be defended -- they are so incredibly vulnerable and are among the highest victims of assault & violence. you're right, they are being done an injustice. and that injustice is the fact sex work is still criminalized. decriminalization, regulation, and offering safety and support for sex workers, and start focusing on the REAL issue: human traffickers, pimps, & abusive patrons.
@@CatholicCarlismEnjoyerif you had any reading comprehension, you would've noticed how they didn’t say "defend s*x work", they said "defend s*x WORKERS". As in, people who, in this situation, were coerced into it. Would you rather we shame these girls for what they did to feed their children?!
He literally wasn’t that hard to find. If authorities didn’t profile these victims as “runaways,” then maybe they could have prevented all a lot of these cases. Thank you Stephanie Soo for covering this. I feel like a lot of people need to know this story.
so many cases that involve s3x work follow this same idea and it breaks my heart that it's still happening. i mean hell the jack the ripper case is a huge example of this. it's disgusting how little some people care about other humans lives solely based on how they made their money to survive

Sex workers and homeless people are the most marginalized groups of the population, that's why a lot of serial killers go after these two types of the population. And the underlined deeper sadness is that some sex workers and homeless people have mental illnesses so they are even furthermore marginalized and ignored if they do try to blow the whistle!
yea its so inhumane how as a society we just completely let down so many ppl like that. its crazy bc sex workers get persecuted & ridiculed even tho they're now just able to maintain a liable income they and their families can live off of, yet if they get a "respectable job" like fast food working for minium wage they'll get a pat on the back for being exploited by multi-billionaire companies like mcdonalds.
@@nynalynn yep! And the vast majority of sex workers are young women, who are constantly being told to 'do as they're told by men' if they want to be accepted by society, which is how many of them are lured and trapped into this lifestyle. @@savannahcaustrita8294 i mean yea but my overall point was the world has became so greedy & consumed by capitalism ppl have to resort to selling their bodies for better, livable wages.
With Barbara, the homeowner it really upset me that she didn’t let her in but also…the world we live in today, i couldn’t blame her because that could also be the way some traffickers or psychos try to get you.
I wonder if she ever felt guilty after hearing what happened to Shannan. Like you said, I understand why she didn't want to let her in, but knowing that could've saved her life hurts to think about.
What bothered me the most is her saying “I don’t see any danger though” and “We live in a gated community” all of that doesn’t matter danger can be ANYWHERE. Very upsetting.
@@gaby60522 but you do have to think about it, it's human nature to protect ourselves. her biggest priority was staying away from danger herself, which is why she called police instead.
I don't know why but when you said the sentence, "Blue isn't just John's beloved pet. Blue is a cadaver dog" It just sent chills into my body like the setting the mood for a scary story.
Srsly, she's up there with MrBallen, and Eleanor Neale for telling people's stories in compelling and compassionate, ways while still keeping you glued to your seat. Like, I've heard a lot of these crimes told before, but Stephanie has brought a very human way of telling the story and got so many more details and gives lots of focus on the victims, who deserve the majority of the focus if you ask me. It doesn't feel gossipy, it feels like the victims are loved and cared for by the person telling their story. Even during the hard parts.
Thank you for humanizing the victims and telling us their backstories. Society often forgets they're just people trying to get by. There's a typecast or stereotype of of what a SW, especially thanks to Hollywood, but each one was unique with different personalities and their own dreams and goals. In many true crime shows, the focus in jusy on the killer and you're left wondering who the victims were and how their lives crossed paths. Again, thank you for dedicating a segment to them.
I live on long Island and I remember when all this was happening. My mom and I got lost by the ocean parkway and Jones Beach and my mom just goes " you know this is where they found all the bodies the other week" I will never forget that day. Iam glad they are still working on this case. Thank you stephanie for doing this case and going into depth on the details. I love your videos and they give me so much joy and comfort. Thank you again for all you do.
I think often times cases where it involves escorts authorities don’t really take it seriously and they see them as runaways. The fact that the killer tormented them and got off by just calling their families as a mockery is disgusting. He found satisfaction in killing these victims. The killer wanted attention and the fact that he kept searching himself up to see update of the case just to boost his ego baffles me. He is sick!
I think it's fair that we all know it's a fact that is why serial killers target them for the most part. I'm sure it's better than year ago but also SWs aren't going to report most incidents even if they want to they are usually not believed or helped sadly
Bad things happen to anyone, but having strong family relationships is something that will always make you less of a target to any predators, including abusive boyfriends etc. If you have someone to run away to, someone to help you and protect you - it's not safe for them. No one assumes that about sex workers. They think they at least have couple of days before someone notices.
Worked in the hotel industry before and I can confirm the police don't take incidents involving escorts seriously unless its suspected underage. Although I did come across one female supervisor officer who felt bad for them and made me release one escort's belongings back to her after she left it behind and ran off on her hotel bill. I actually physically held her at the door until she screamed Rapper so I let go and she slammed herself into the glass door. They always look for hotels that have security, in room safe. To discourage them from making reservations we adopted a no cash policy but they got around it by either using someone else credit card or called corporate to complain we didn't take cash .
I lived in the foster home in 1997 where the dad was a cop. He often said the cases with sex workers or homeless were NHI. That stood for "no human involved." Victims were given no respect or emotional support by the cops and other people working the cases. He hated that
NHI.. For fuck sake, that is so wrong and abhorrent. Someone who is able of disqualifiying some people as sub human, or not human at all, just because of circumstances of their lives or their proffesion...well let's say that I find ability of empathy towards all people, of those cops is suspect at best.
My mother was a deputy sheriff and she told me about this. She worked in the sheriff dept just outside a reservation in Arizona and a lot of the cases where natives were involved were 'joked' as being NHI, but it was never in the paperwork, and if anyone from the reservation law enforcement came into the case the NHI talk completely disappeared. It was disgusting.
I hate it here. Imagine the fear and hate you have for homeless PEOPLE to do this. I live near a big city in Germany that’s infamous for having a lot of homeless drug addicts. These people would at most scream at someone or something and smell bad but wouldn’t hurt me or anyone for no reason. Many of them are very polite still and are sorry for bothering anyone by asking for money… And the misogyny for sex workers. How evil can you be to allow someone to die because you don’t agree with their profession. A profession that’s as old as money!
It’s absolutely mind blowing how long he was able to get away with living his double life and getting away with such heinous crimes. It’s crazy how they stumbled on all those victims only because they were trying to locate Shannon. To think they’d probably not have been found had it not been for her disappearance. I’m so glad their families were able to get closure, now they deserve justice.
The thing I love the most about your way of covering all these crimes is that you tell the victims story and focus on them. Honouring their memory. Finding as much information as you can about them and bringing their stories to the viewers. Sure, with the unofficial, potential victims, you skimmed more, but with the four securely linked, you give them the humanity that crime coverage usually doesn't. You don't focus on the perpetrators, not giving them any glory, which really should be the way all of us go about this. Not nicknaming killers like "the night stalker" or "BTK", but ignoring the killers and focusing on the victims.
Rest In Peace to these women 💔 It doesn’t matter what their professions/mental struggles/etc were, it’s absolutely tragic and sad that they will never get to see their families/friends again 😔.
Hi Stephanie, I don't know if this is the right place to post this but I have a case suggestion. Some days ago in Greece a man named Antonis Karyotis was literally pushed off a boarding ramp by the ferry crew at the port Piraeus, right in front of hundreds of people. There are CCTV videos, videos taken from other passengers and tons of witnesses. The entire country is devastated, he was impaired too. He was so loved by his community, and his family is financially struggling now too because of all of this. I really love your true crime videos, you are so compassionate yet your storytelling is so compelling :D have a nice day, thank you!! Update: the murderers aren't only murderers, but racist pigs apparently too. Some conversations were leaked in which the ship captain when informed about Antonis' murder was heard saying "Oh, I thought it was a black man or a Pakistani one so let's just keep the ship going" like WHAt!? This case has turned into a literal hate crime, I would love to see you cover this!! love you! 💜
I just researched this and it’s so so incredibly sad. The amount of disrespect for him even after he was killed, and from the murderers themselves. I hope she covers this
Stephanie, I really appreciate the way you discuss addicts and addiction on your channel. As a recovering addict, it means the world to me that you are so respectful about this topic. It’s so sad.

I grew up on Long Island and was a driver for a lot of working girls. And I will admit that there was a vibe of worry when it comes down to it. Certain people we’d not do based on the “spiteful” personality of some people. We came close to a real creeper in jersey. I’m 6’4 250 pounds and I there was a few times where I got “involved”. Guys demanding the girls to do degrading things. Then calling them and harassing them after. To this day I swear this guy was the disgusting jersey guy but he was just playing games. There were a lot of girls who changed the way they did business. It became more “public” like having an active online profile and not doing business without a tether to the driver.

I really appreciate you extending kindness to the killer's wife. It's easy to go "how didn't she know" and hate her, but actually she was deliberately kept in the dark and must have been so traumatized. Dennis Raider's (BTK) wife and daughters had no idea that he was a serial killer. Many times, serial killers cover their tracks really well. When one of his daughters expressed concern about the BTK murders, he told her not to worry, that he'd protect her from anything happening to her.
She has divorced him due to harassment but she doesn't believe he done it, not one bit. She also wants to due NYPD for trashing the home and her loss of it. I seen the DA and Rex's Defence speaking to press and gathered some extra info from questions that were being asked. Such as the large doll taken out in a class case from Rex's home, similar dolls had been left on grave sites apparently. I suppose we'll know so much more when the case is over.
It is so sad to hear how that one caller described her as a 14 year old. Hearing that makes me think that the people that hired her had some p e do tendencies 😢
no, it is just her height that she can't change. Just because you date a short girl doesn't mean pdf tendencies ya smooth brain. Not her fault for looking young. People sometimes would exaggerate a situation so police actually show up, If they said it was just a regular crazy women, then the police would take their time knowing there are a hosts of crazy drunks who go out in the middle of the night in the suburbs, people actually do that But if you describe them as a young blonde child, you’d be surprise how fast swat team and the US seals team will show up with helicopters

I want to compliment you on how you described these young ladies. You really did a good job sharing who they were as people. Sometimes, life circumstances or choices put you on a rocky path. This does not make someone less valued as a human being. I stumble over my word choices as I try to convey how my heart goes out to the families for their losses and to you for sharing the story of each victim so respectfully.
I grew up on Long Island and was a child when the news of the murders broke out. My parents were terrified but felt safe because we lived in a gated community (which is quite ironic that the suspect lived in a gated community). To be honest, i dont remember much but I'm sure all of long island avoided the jones beach area (another huge state beach/park nearby gilgo beach) for quite some time. But as years went on, many people went back to the area of gilgo/jones beach where we watched the annual air show during the summertime and it became packed again--as if the murders never occurred. All of my classmates knew about the killer but he became somewhat of a forgotten boogeyman and a bit of a myth that the locals say to tourists who visit over the summer. Every time my family had friends or family visit us, we would drive around gilgo beach and talk about the long island serial killer and the bodies found there (just as a friendly, welcoming gesture). My mom was flabbergasted when they finally caught him and to be honest, i feel like most of long island thought he would never be caught
This! I was also a kid Long Island when this became public. I remember my mom especially being super on edge. Looking back on it, although she’s never been in that line of work, my older sister was in the age range of the victims at the time so that may have played a part in it. It’s crazy 13 years have already passed
I just went this August to New York from Peru and stayed with relatives in Long Island. My cousin told me about this as we were visiting Robert Beach lighthouse. I just can’t
I grew up only a few blocks away from the Heuerman house. I didn't know about the murders until I was older obviously, but around 2011-2014 I definitely felt a shift - my mom was always so nervous about me going to the bus stop for school, and I wasn't allowed to walk anywhere alone. Looking back, it's so scary to think that my bus stop was literally down the street from this monster's house. The day that he was arrested was insane too - the streets were lined with cars and people were everywhere. Almost everyone I know knows the Heuermans or has interacted with the dad. This whole situation has just been very surreal and disturbing.
All I got from this is you never really knew much about the situation or cared and it never really effected you nobody knew the killer was from that area so your mom not telling not to go out or whatever is basically 70% of all moms there was plenty of crazy people committing crimes you still never knew what can happen when you went out save the sympathy for the actual victims cause you aren’t one was no where near one unless you was a prostitute

Shannan's disappearance could've been avoided if she stayed at Gus' house. She already got the attention and was already in a 911 call. This is why 911 operators tell victims to stay put, so they can send out help at the exact location. But she ran away, unintentionally starting a search that would reveal all the dead bodies. If not for Shannan, the killing spree victims might still be hidden in dirt and tall grass.
@@Johnne009 it's mainly caused by the drug/s that she took that time. It probably enhanced her intuition and she went paranoid about everything that's happening since she's dealing with men she doesn't know. I would also bet that the area itself was giving away a weird vibe since a lot of the victims were still undiscovered by that time. Another thing is that she must've heard about the killings and realized she was there where the victims went missing. Who wouldn't freak out about it? What I don't get is that why would Gus let her out of his sight? Or why did that lady didn't let her in? She basically let Shannan die out there. She could've check if it's a man or a woman out in front if her door, she was already in a 911 call anyway. She could've let her in, kept her in a locked room for safety and waited for cops to arrive.
@@steveknows_420the bodies hadn't been found yet so no one knew about them. Also, it's a common trick to get people to open the door. Someone hides out of sight while some "innocent, non threatening" young girl bangs on the door screaming about being in danger. When the person opens the door, the person/s hiding jump out and ambush them. Lastly, do you really think someone who means harm is going to allow the homeowner the chance to put them in a locked room? Locked rooms inside of homes aren't very secure. They're for privacy not security. Then, what if the homeowner was a psycho and locked them in a room and tortured them?
@@refinnej5302 no one knew that people were missing and that there's a serial killer from that area? Did you even watch this video? Stephanie, can you please cover the case of Kendrick Johnson. He was a 17 year old black teen who was found dead rolled up in a gym mat in 2013. This happened in Valdosta, Georgia. The general public believes it was covered up by the school due to 2 young suspects having ties to the people who run the school. The FBI has closed the case and said there was zero foul play and it was a freak accident. Please cover this case. This case is incredibly wild and it needs to be talked about.
I just can’t believe with ALL that happening, she just miraculously winds up dead … she didn’t sound high and paranoid to me, she sounded terrified and I 100% don’t think she died of hypothermia … wasn’t it summertime?
She sounded like she was on drugs or having an episode. Not all drugs make you high. And since her sister killed their mother because of a schizophrenic episode it's likely she was suffering mentally as well. This is why "that person didn't show signs off" is not at all proof of anything. If you've ever been to a mental hospital or interacted with drug addicts or people with these mental conditions you'd realize how "invisible" this can actually be. Drugs or delusional episodes don't always cause people to "go crazy". In fact they rarely do. If anything her way of talking is an indicator she isn't in her right mind. She's TOO calm for what she was describing. There are many different drugs out there and people react to them in their own ways as well. What you see on TV is made to be "dramatic". The things you might see on the street are only the ones that are yelling.
I was not from the area but it was crazy to hear body after body being discovered. Then the realization that there was an actual serial killer on the loose. Like in reality we know there are active serial killers all the time, but when you get confirmation is terrifying.
I can’t imagine being that woman who called 911 and was like “this girl needs help but I’m not letting her in” then not too long later finding out that she was murdered!! I get it but that’s just such a hard situation for everyone-you know that you should help but nowadays you can’t be sure. Isn’t that sad!!?? We can’t help people who need help cuz we don’t know if we’ll be the next that actually needs help!! It’s sad!!! This whole thing was absolutely disgusting and horrible and the fact that that POS called to harass the sister of a girl he just brutally murdered!!!! This whole thing seems like something you’d see in a movie!!!
It's very true but again this tends to also be ploy for kidnappings, she could have easily been a victim. Or even if that wasn't the case the girl could have been just tripping on drugs which could have led to her attacking the woman. It's not exactly safe to let strangers that are already freaking out into your home, mostly when you are alone.

It is such a difficult decision. My sister and brother-in-law made GOOD money. My sister was a night shift nurse making double pay and my brother-in-law is an actuary at a large insurance company. They lived in a very nice neighbourhood, not gated but REAL nice and quite safe. In 2014, my brother-in-law was home alone and a girl came to the door saying she had been raped and just needed to call 911. He let her in and she shot him and robbed my sister and brother-in-law's home. My brother-in-law did not die thankfully but his leg is still messed up to this day and he often has to use a walker, cane or this like small motor vehicle thing idk how to explain. He just trusted her and she shot him. He had hella PTSD for years but my sister was there for him and eventually they got through it. But that's the world we live in and you can't trust everybody. I'm sure she felt devastated hearing the news but you really can't be overly trusting of people.
i have pretty bad anxiety and experience awful night terrors due to trauma and i literally feel afraid to go to sleep every night. but listening to stephanie is somehow the only way i’m able to calm down enough to be able to fall asleep 😭
Same here, I put on the podcast version to fall asleep... And considering we obviously have similar based anxiety, it's funny how someone talking about awful crimes can calm us 😂 I always have a little chuckle to myself, like "why does THIS calm me 😂". I think it's mostly the person's voice because I can't just listen to any old random podcast/video.
I remember when they found Shannon’s body was found and there were so many conspiracy theories about her death especially about the doctor who said he was treating her. Everyone thought he was weird as heck and her family at the time really believed it was the doctor. Very strange man!
I went to high school with someone who ended up murdering his own mother a few years ago and then lighting the house on fire. I think it's still to this day the craziest thing I've ever heard. We were friends, he was a really nice guy. And I grew up in a really nice town with a super low crime rate. In fact, my hometown usually makes the top 10 lists for "Best Towns in America." Murders don't happen here. Needless to say, everyone was SHOCKED. In this case, he was on serious drugs (the rumor is PCP) and had just been released from the mental hospital a few days before it happened. I don't think he even knew what he was doing. They tried him for First Degree Murder but because of the drugs and mental illness, he only got like 14 years. And I can only imagine now that he's sobered up that he's probably mentally in his own prison. We haven't spoken in 20 years, but from everything I know, he had a good relationship with his mother. He was living with her at the time. I think he may have been hallucinating and her death was a total accident. But he did stab her, which is especially brutal. I couldn't live with myself if I had done something like that. But to find out that someone you know is a cold-blooded serial killer? I can't even imagine! I know with my former classmate, it didn't feel like real life. I watch a lot of true crime shows, but you never expect to know someone who could actually be the subject of one of these videos. That's crazy.
oh my god thats horrible! that reminds me of an older case of this young man who bluggeoned his mother to death..he was also having a pyschotic episode and was yet undiagnosed with schizophrenia..as soon he was medicated he was cognizant and coherent again. his grief and remorse was tremendous qnd palpable

THANK YOU for putting the 911 call scream warning, I can’t listen to the 911 calls and this is the only channel so far I’ve come across that does that. Thank you
Stephanie…. You scared me straight into my house! I’m a live in caregiver for an elderly woman in an elderly community, I don’t sleep well so I sit outside on the porch late at night and by the time played the part of the 911 call where she’s screaming and the elderly woman refused to let her in, I got SO SPOOKED! It’s like 3am here and the street lights aren’t working in front of my house or the neighbors house every since the power went out during the storm. Its so dark you can hardly see what’s directly in front of you, and all the sudden…. I start thinking I hear suspicious noises like someone is creeping around and I’m looking around frantically in every direction now. I start envisioning someone trying to get me, I run straight in but backwards because now I’m afraid to turn my back, lock the door, and flip on the porch light. 😂😂😂
Please don't sit outside in the dark porch late at night by yourself. Sit by a window. Nothing good happens after midnight, not even in gated communities or elderly communities, no where is safe for females these days.
You guys are so right! But, unfortunately I’m a smoker so I have to do it outside! I’m almost at the point of quitting but not quiet there yet and it’s hardest at night when you are awake and everyone else is sleeping. It is a very safe area but I started thinking oh my God, if I ran to the neighbors screaming in the middle of the night, they probably wouldn’t open the door just like the woman on the 911 call 😂😂😂 I also realize that if I were a serial ki11er that’s the area I’d go to, “a safe area” where it’s quiet, there’s not allot of law enforcement riding around patrolling and cameras.
I lived in Long Island during the 8 years when they found the bodies and when they started speculating about the culprits. I was always so sad about the victims, its so sad how so many people don’t care because of what people do for a living. Who cares, they are human and did not deserve this 😢. They are daughters, mothers, friends, sisters….
14:07 14:26 i’d like to second these question and ask you (if you’re willing to share- if not, that’s fine and i totally understand and respect that) if you noticed anything?
@@kirbysthiccthighs oh, christ, I thought you were making some weird conspiracy theory or something about Stephanie/husband/whatever. As in, thinking you "noticed" something in the video itself. I've seen too many nutzos in these comments sections...
I grew up on Long Island. I was still pretty young at the time of the murders so I don’t remember a ton, but even still I knew about it. *Everybody* knew about it. I remember one time my older sister got freaked out because she was watching some video about the worst killers around the world and she was relieved towards the end of the video because none of them were near us, only for the Long Island serial killer to be ranked as the worst serial killer in the world and still at large My parents taught me and my sister to always stay in groups and what to do if we ever got in a bad situation. We weren’t super close to the area, we were on the north shore, but still put us on edge and also I have a lot of family on the south shore
Hey Stephanie! I’m currently a junior in high school taking forensics class and we had a month long assignment where we had to cover a true crime case from a list our teacher created and I chose this one, I had no idea about the case prior and found it as a shock when I checked a few internet outlets to only find out it’s an ongoing case! I’ve been watching you for around 7 years now and I haven’t missed a single video, there really is no point in my comment but I enjoyed the few minor details about the case I’ve might’ve missed, too bad I had to present before the release of this video..
I love your content, the way you talk about the cases is very respectful yet emotional & it really helps to make it feel like we're just talking about this together. Thank you (weirdly your videos are really comforting)
I live nearby in Long Beach. 100% accurate description of Ocean Parkway. Imagine it at night. Yup! Long before they found people out there it was always the kind of place you felt weary driving on at night. Looking forward to your take on the case. Tuning in now. Thank you for covering this! 💜💜💜
I grew up and lived on Long Island at the time. When that happened my friend and I were freshman in college. And she needed photos for her photography degree. We had planned to do a photo shoot of me by the water. After the news broke out we brought a few of a guy friends because we were nervous to be two women by ourselves. I thought this case would never be solved thank goodness the families are getting the soon to be justice that they deserve!
I remember this case, it was awful. All these poor girls. I find it difficult to comprehend that women are seen as very low in society for doing this work, yet to me it’s the men paying for their time with women that is gross
It’s all gross women shouldn’t have to do sex work to get by no little girl grows up wanting to be one and then men and brainwashed women try say it’s empowering when it isn’t it’s just what women want
People always conveniently forget about supply and demand. People are BUYING them. They can’t do this alone. This wouldn’t exist if not for a market. It’s literally insane, it’s like shaming baristas for making coffee.
@@mjwest4968conversely, people couldn't buy it if it weren't for sale, either. Both ppl involved in the transaction are equally gross. Although to be totally fair, women are unlikely to be unable to have access to sex if they want it, unlike men, who for some, their only access to consensual sex is to purchase it. & there are certainly other jobs available, so the women willing to sell their bodies rather than get a job at McDonald's *are* a lil grosser, actually.
I grew up on LI and I remember watching the news with my mom about these victims being found. I remember being terrified to go to the beach and telling my mom I didn’t want to go to the beach anymore, a 15-20 min drive away from my house. I was only 8 or 9 at the time. It was terrifying hearing abt it.
I believe whole heartedly that Shannon’s disappearance that night was the catalyst for a serial killer being even known. The police LI department, as many others, even today have been so unfairly bias about sex workers. I’ve heard many officers state “well when you put yourself out there to so much danger, who should care” which made me absolutely gasp. These woman, a lot of them, and even more still, were listed as missing. Yet due to their professionswere dismissed. The ones who ran the LI police department were as shady as could be IMO, and I saw in news coverage and interviews the condescending way Shannon’s Mother and sisters were treated. Mari, however, Shannon’s Mother, would not let it deter her mission to find her daughter, and to give her the dignity everyone deserves. Thank you for covering these victims stories. Everyone deserves a voice, and hopefully someday, justice.
I always heard podcasts of this case, and it baffled me how the two men at the beginning were not convicted… BUT THEY CAUGHT THE KILLER NOW!! I’m so glad these women are getting the justice they deserve. It’s sickening how long it went for. Thank you Stephanie for bringing these news.
Wait so you want the 2 people who haven’t done the crime to rot in jail while the real killer is just out and about? Sometimes I just feel men get targeted just for being a man I swear the amount of women that are just casually sexist nowadays is just baffling Yea they were shitbags but they didn’t kill them or had intentions to do so, Being labeled by society as something you’re not and them being adamant about it is what makes real killers just so you know You’d be surprised how many innocent people go to prison and come out as straight killers and most of them were put in their by false accusations by women with vendettas against them
reposting this comment because it needs to be talked about! Hi Stephanie, I don't know if this is the right place to post this but I have a case suggestion. Some days ago in Greece a man named Antonis Karyotis was literally pushed off the boarding ramp by a ferry the crew at the port Piraeus, right in front of hundreds of people. There are CCTV videos, videos taken from other passengers and tons of witnesses. The entire country is devastated, he was impaired too. He was so loved by his community, and his family is financially struggling now too. I really love your true crime videos, you are so compassionate yet your storytelling is so hypnotic :D have a nice day, thank you!!

I’m from Long Island and can say everything Stephanie is saying is spot on. From the description of ocean parkway to how we were all guessing who this killer was for years constantly accusing coworkers and friends. It was a crazy time. Great research.
I wish I could say I’m shocked that the people of color weren’t identified. With a toddler involved, you’d think they’d put more effort into finding out what happened and who it was but…here we are.
Hearing that she or her baby weren’t identified breaks my heart. You’re telling me no one is missing these two? No one reported them missing? SOMEONE knew them, and I really hope and pray that there’s people trying to find someone who knows them. Killing people is cruel enough, but a toddler? It takes a real monster to kill the most vulnerable people in our society. I hope they get justice, they deserve so much more than to be known as “Peaches” and “toddler”
@@destinyrain222 I'm sure their loved ones were looking for them but with the very little descriptions they provided, I'm willing to bet the efforts in getting that information out to the public was just as limited. They didn't even attempt to release a sketch for the black woman and her child. I don't think it was a coincidence. This is why the number of missing cases for people of color are ridiculously high. Don't look up the number (per year), it's triggering.
Who would be looking for them? Most don't have traditional families and with all the fatherless homes..I'm sure no one is missing them. Facts don't care about your feelings
@@ivyfeenix there's nothing personal about this for me been with the same man for a decade and I can't have children so this has nothing to do with my family despite your concern and pretend psychological knowledge
I can never imagine the mental and physical strain on these families having to wait for their love ones with the hope that one day they will walk through their doors or call them on the phone. I honestly can’t imagine how they felt because that killer made sure those victims never returned back to them. It’s terrifying and horrifying to even be living in the neighbourhood where these murders were occurring.
It’s terrifying that women have to go to things such as sex work to get money if only women were more respected and could have better chances at actual careers and jobs
Having a missing family member would be horrible anywhere, but I imagine standing in New York trying to figure out where to start looking would be such a helpless feeling 😭
No one can tell a story like her, and the relating to her husband’s questions are so beautiful. It gives me hope in, like, marrying your best friend. That’s what they seem like
It's awful that a person's profession can cause people to ... overlook... their disappearance. That person is still someone's family member. And I dont think anyone can understand how someone can do such wicked things to another human being, then go home and spend time with their loved ones like they didn't just do that thing. It has to be so complex to see your K9 partner alert ( 12:20 ) - like glad a family can get closure, but sad that is the news that has to be given. Thanks, Stephanie, as always for the amazing storytelling. ❤
So I listen to and watch a ton of true crime and there are very very few who present the story with such heartfelt compassion for the victims. Keep on doing what you do, which is lots of good! Y’all are a new favorite!
This is a very haunting case 😢 I hope the family of all the girls find solace after the tragedy they have endured. I hope all the victims rest in peace.
Before he was caught, I never knew about this case. I'm very glad that he was finally caught and the victims families can rest. Plus the community can feel safe again.
Horrible. My mom told me about this case just few days earlier and I was shook. Serial killer aimed at most vulnerable group of people. They had no one to protect them.
Pretty cool hearing this story since I live on Long Island we would speak about these killings and how crazy it was unsolved until recently ! Growing up knowing it was close to home and also knowing someone that was made a suspect at one point was insane. I’ve been watching you for over a year and the fact that you’re doing an episode about this is surreal. Much love from Bayshore Long Island !
I watched a creepier depiction of this case when it was recommended to me as a video and I was drawing… It really did sound terrifying as a result, and it hit even more when I later found out how _recently_ he’d been captured. Definitely a freaky one. 😬 I feel terribly for the victims-imagining living somewhere where such a killer could roam in people’s midst is…just really nerve-wracking.
I can appreciate you bringing up Rex 's family... they are victims too in all of this. I'm sure they are just as shocked as we all would be to learn this man they've known and loved so long is really this evil monster. I can't imagine going through that shock, let alone all the anxiety dealing with the search and how to find a semblance of a normal life after.. Also this is probably one of the most detailed accounts of the victims I've seen in this case.. and I've seen quite a few.. following this closely, hope these girls get justice and the right man is behind bars for the rest of his life. Edit, the way u just described the "male" remains, and the assumption of them potentially identifying as a female, the killer getting mad, in turn m*rdering them...i truly wonder if this may have been his first victim.. and it unleashed something deep inside him and it became his MO and obsession...
What’s very sad is that there very likely could have been multiple serial killers active around the same time or using the area to dispose of the bodies. There are different forms of disposal and I question the suicide of one of the men. Perhaps he could have been linked to even one of those bodies and feared that he could be accused of all. Also, Shannon’s 911 call is very telling and I’m sure it could have been solved if the police would have taken her case more seriously because unfortunately sex workers don’t get the same amount of care when they go missing or even when they’re found dead. She is clearly running from someone and who she’s running from could easily be narrowed down- i truly question how her driver was cleared. Either way, the chain of events lead to all these revelations (many suspicious suspects who are likely involved in some form of other crimes) and although it is incredibly unfortunate, at least many of these victims can now be laid to rest.
As a Scot can I just say that over here we call it the Daily Fail and cringe when creators reference it. I love that you are aware that they are questionable Stephanie, as so many creators reference them as a reliable source, and we think ‘eurggghh!’ So well done for being aware, and thanks for another great episode!
I know that it’s considered low bar journalism by some but that site is definitely prolific. In fact, I’ve see. Articles on there about my own home town in the states that I consider major news yet my own local news sources ignore even though it’s topical and local.
@@brunneng38 The trouble is that they use stories from around the world while ignoring news going on at home. They treat days when yet another actual Gov scam gets revealed as ‘slow news days’ and instead of talking about how the PM’s wife is exploiting a major tax loophole, fact, or that another Gov member’s friend got £10mill from the Gov for some covid related ‘project’ that they weren’t even in the business of doing so didn’t, again fact multiple times…they’ll report on something/anything else from around the world every time. I’ve never caught one of Stephanie’s videos so soon after posting! Hopefully more unsolved murders/cases will be solved & successfully prosecuted. Condolences to the victims & their loved ones.
Stephanie I think your storytelling style would be perfect for the story of the BTK serial killer that terrorized my community for decades. It’s horrifying how he was friends with police and considered an “upstanding churchgoer” and no one suspected him until he made one huge mistake in the 90s that led to him being caught in a very interesting way
When I heard this story on podcast, I was heart broken. Those families had to wait for more than a decade to get justice for their loved ones, imagine knowing your beloved’s killer is living somewhere freely and here you can’t do anything about it. I pray for all those people who lost their loved ones. This cases one of those where it terrifies you and brings you back to reality that how brutal is the real world!
I worked and lived near Gilgo beach when the bodies were found. I also visited beaches near Gilgo beach very often. This was definitely a scary time. I can’t believe it took 13 years to find the killer.
I love how you talk about how the victims were as people. Like instead of just giving their names you talk about how they were as people and not just basic stuff, you really go into like their interests, how people saw them and their dreams. a lot of other true crime, media (at least the one I’ve seen) they show the victims as just props in the murderers story witch is just disgusting and I’m very relieved to see you’re doing the opposite
Shannon Gilbert was originally from my adopted city, Lancaster PA. I know she was a “call girl” but no one deserves what happened to her or the other young women, child and Asian man who were this creep’s victims.
always a weird feeling as a homeless sex worker to be reminded that tons of people hate me or don't value my life for simply being stuck in situations i don't even wanna be in
Can you imagine being the woman who didn't open the door? How guilty she must feel even though she did nothing wrong? Breaks my heart. Rescue was so closed and still the poor girl had to die. And I absolutely love how much time Stephanie gives the victims, makes us really feel for them, show how much they are missed. That's what I love especially on this channel.
I am so sorry for all these women and their family Especially mother Gilbert who was relentless in finding her girl... and died at the hands of another daughter who was also tortured by Shanon's disappearance... so much pain on just 1 unfortunate family , to much to imagine for them all. I love the way you defend s*x workers, addicts, mental health, etc. Your empathy is unmatched in your line of work. Thank you
There is no such thing as "sex work" and it shouldn't be defended. The people who take up such work are being done an injustice, the fact that such dehumanizing and degrading "work" is still around is an embarrassment and an abomination. No human being should ever have to subject themselves to that industry.
@@CatholicCarlismEnjoyer you're entitled to your opinion

I'm really happy she gave each victim the time of day to tell their life story.
yea its so inhumane how as a society we just completely let down so many ppl like that. its crazy bc sex workers get persecuted & ridiculed even tho they're now just able to maintain a liable income they and their families can live off of, yet if they get a "respectable job" like fast food working for minium wage they'll get a pat on the back for being exploited by multi-billionaire companies like mcdonalds.
@@nynalynn yep!

Iam glad they are still working on this case. Thank you stephanie for doing this case and going into depth on the details. I love your videos and they give me so much joy and comfort. Thank you again for all you do.
Beach time is always so weird here when ppl ask “which one” I always think abt it
I think often times cases where it involves escorts authorities don’t really take it seriously and they see them as runaways.
To discourage them from making reservations we adopted a no cash policy but they got around it by either using someone else credit card or called corporate to complain we didn't take cash
.
😊😊
There was a serial who killed over 3 dozen women because of that. Cops didn't care because of their lifestyle.
I lived in the foster home in 1997 where the dad was a cop. He often said the cases with sex workers or homeless were NHI. That stood for "no human involved." Victims were given no respect or emotional support by the cops and other people working the cases. He hated that
My uncle (black man) was murdered during that time and they said that about him
absolutely disgusting attitude... everyone deserves resepect especially in death.
Due to the old top dog in police apparantly

I really appreciate you extending kindness to the killer's wife. It's easy to go "how didn't she know" and hate her, but actually she was deliberately kept in the dark and must have been so traumatized. I'm an emotionally not super in touch dude and I got choked up hearing about these poor victims, I can't imagine how hard it must be to know someone who you were close to did that. If I were here I'd just curl up sobbing, honestly.

Suspect worked doing a call in a gated community freaked out trippin and ran and was never seen again till her body was found….
This! I was also a kid Long Island when this became public. I remember my mom especially being super on edge. Looking back on it, although she’s never been in that line of work, my older sister was in the age range of the victims at the time so that may have played a part in it. It’s crazy 13 years have already passed
@@CierraStar43suspect? You mean victim?
I just went this August to New York from Peru and stayed with relatives in Long Island. My cousin told me about this as we were visiting Robert Beach lighthouse. I just can’t
Bringing ppl to where victims were found as a "friendly gesture" is bizarre asf. The paleosity of it all🤢
I grew up only a few blocks away from the Heuerman house.

Why did she even run from her client's place?? Was it something that she saw
She has. It's on her Spotify account, Rotten Mango.
What's the name
I just can’t believe with ALL that happening, she just miraculously winds up dead … she didn’t sound high and paranoid to me, she sounded terrified and I 100% don’t think she died of hypothermia … wasn’t it summertime?
Exactly!
Right!!! I canNOT get over this!
Imagine her family finding out about this. I cant imagine how ENRAGED i would be.
Yeah, the woman did the right thing calling the cops. She didn't see danger, but she called the cops to make sure they would both be safe.@@lady_apocalypse178
Hindsight is 20/20. In that situation, specially in a gated neighborhood, that stuff is increeeeedibly sketchy.

I'm sure it was the drugs. Apparently, he had a big problem with PCP. Scary stuff!

@@brittanyholtgreven4106 You’re projecting. Just because that’s your experience doesn’t mean that’s others’. Unpack that in therapy.
@@ivyfeenix there's nothing personal about this for me been with the same man for a decade and I can't have children so this has nothing to do with my family despite your concern and pretend psychological knowledge
It always makes me so sick when they end up having kids, making a family. When they’re such sick individuals
😅😅😅😅😅😊
What bothers me the most is that some of these people have kids. It's sick and disgusting and I hope this horrible person knows that.
This is a very haunting case 😢
I hope the family of all the girls find solace after the tragedy they have endured. I hope all the victims rest in peace.
Before he was caught, I never knew about this case. I'm very glad that he was finally caught and the victims families can rest. Plus the community can feel safe again.
"why does every suspects name start with j" bro is reading my mind fr 💀
I feel terribly for the victims-imagining living somewhere where such a killer could roam in people’s midst is…just really nerve-wracking.
Keep in mind she was located in New York… likely has to be more cautious.
Who made the creepier vid?
Maybe him and his cop buddy were working together
As a Scot can I just say that over here we call it the Daily Fail and cringe when creators reference it.
I love that you are aware that they are questionable Stephanie, as so many creators reference them as a reliable source, and we think ‘eurggghh!’
So well done for being aware, and thanks for another great episode!
British citizens starving to death because they can’t afford food and energy after the gov has wasted a fortune doesn’t get a mention.
I stumbled on Rotten Mango two weeks ago. Since then, I have not watched anything else. I love the interaction between you and your boyfriend/husband. All my family and I are addicted
i literally cannot watch other true crime story unless its stephanie telling it. it just became a part of my day now and when i see an interesting mysterious true crime case i immediately go to rotten mango to see if she covered it. like the two dutch girls that went missing in panama i hope that you cover this case bc its so intriguing and i cant seem to find a good story teller of this case in yt. anyway ilyyyy ❤🤗❤️🔥💕
It amazing to see how far Stephanie has come, I've been watching her since 2018 and she always makes my day❤
I’ve never caught one of Stephanie’s videos so soon after posting! Hopefully more unsolved murders/cases will be solved & successfully prosecuted. Condolences to the victims & their loved ones.
Stephanie I think your storytelling style would be perfect for the story of the BTK serial killer that terrorized my community for decades. It’s horrifying how he was friends with police and considered an “upstanding churchgoer” and no one suspected him until he made one huge mistake in the 90s that led to him being caught in a very interesting way
her husband cracks me up... "ok why does everyone's name start with J?"
Girl I've been binge watching you for days now. You have quickly become my favorite 🥰
They probably don’t even have the right killer. That’s the sad part.
His house is about 20 mins away from mine. It was just searched again and he was charged with another murder. Scary stuff
Shannon Gilbert was originally from my adopted city, Lancaster PA. I know she was a “call girl” but no one deserves what happened to her or the other young women, child and Asian man who were this creep’s victims.
It's actually suspected that the Asian victim was a trans woman who was also working as an escort
@@violet7773 So I guess the b#$@%*d kept to his pattern of killing females...wonder if the child was a female as well?
@@violet7773Heard that too. I never heard anything concerning the toddler.
I LOVE the way this woman tells a story!! I have heard this story so many different times and yet I was hanging on EVERY SINGLE WORD!!!
Glad that they finally caught this monster.
Your upload timing is always on point, listening to this now. Thank you Stephanie ❤
I’M SO SICK OF THE POLICE SAYING “THEY RAN AWAY”
always a weird feeling as a homeless sex worker to be reminded that tons of people hate me or don't value my life for simply being stuck in situations i don't even wanna be in
Can you imagine being the woman who didn't open the door? How guilty she must feel even though she did nothing wrong? Breaks my heart. Rescue was so closed and still the poor girl had to die.
And I absolutely love how much time Stephanie gives the victims, makes us really feel for them, show how much they are missed. That's what I love especially on this channel.
I am so sorry for all these women and their family Especially mother Gilbert who was relentless in finding her girl... and died at the hands of another daughter who was also tortured by Shanon's disappearance... so much pain on just 1 unfortunate family , to much to imagine for them all. May those fallen and their love ones hurt by this crime and it's relentless pain rest in peace , Amen
