She was giddy over receiving petty change but yeah she’s gonna suck him dry. What was he gonna do with all the money he saved when he was dead or in jail? These men are just suicidal but make up excuses to take women and helpless beings (his pets!) out with them too.
Cause their logic is - if they'll divorce she'll take even more of his money! Same reason married men with kids cheat, they don't want to pay alimony or lose the house and the "housemaid" (their wife 🙄). Heard it from family members who sadly knew these kinds personally. 🤮
I bet he just didn't feel like dealing with these consequences and wanted to "live as a free man"..
Because this isn't a normal man, this is a psychopath, in about 1 hour of video she explains the reason. It's not about the money, its about deep twisted psychological problem. He was going to rob banks and pharmacies, he wasn't worried about divorcing and paying alimony, this was a delusion brought to reality.

Honestly, just by watching the super short videos of the wife, made me think she was in a bad marriage, she seemed afraid of him and content with receiving the bare minimum from him. She and her daughter definitely deserved better. 😒💔
She was so grateful just because he didn’t leave her after she became disabled, but if he did she’d be alive now. That poor woman was doomed.
He didn’t believe the world was going to end. He believed his world was. That he was a lost cause. His wife was sick so he was financially responsible for them, and he was sick of it. So, he made a bunker to hide once he killed his family.
Bingo from his inability to regulate his emotions, he was doomed once he made it to adulthood with no mental intervention. I have borderline personality disorder and luckily I am able to know when I’m being overwhelmed and the thoughts I have aren’t my usual but the result of my emotions releasing in one moment all at once. This man was in his 40s believing he had no way of changing or seeking help. Either he didn’t want to look for the help or he couldn’t as he was too far deep In his delusions to see his issues

He was building his bunker for 8 years… He wanted to get rid of his wife and daughter for nearly a decade, yet this was the only way he came up with- it’s horrible.
Yes...I wouldn't be shocked if he had underlying mental illness that caused his dilutions to become more realistic in his mind which caused him to eventually murder his family. It's okay be be a survivalist/prepper, but to take it to that extent obviously isn't mentally sound.
That's what I thought too. That HIS world was ending, not everyone else's. I also wonder if he thought he was doing his family a favor by killing them. People like that always think that what they're doing is "mercy". That it's justifiable in some way (spoiler alert, it's not).
Peter Keller's bunker was built like it was meant for someone looking to escape the authorities rather than an apocalyptic future. If anything Peter was only looking to escape his wife and daughter so he could go live in his little man cave. After all he had no room for them but plenty of room for his numerous guns and stock piles of ammunition.

Came to the comments to say just this. The roof was never meant to be air-strike or 'bomb' proof at all. All it was ever meant to do was to hold up the earth above it, and that's just what it did. His underground log cabin was perfect in all but intent. And why did he not just get a divorce like a normal human being? Like Steph said, it was _perfect_ for hiding form alimony. No Special Task Force is going all out with helicopters after you over skipped alimony and maybe a missed court date. Well, maybe for the court date, but only if really pressed, otherwise they would just wait and hope he gets pulled over in traffic assuming they never learn about the man-cave.

Fro his vlog, it never indicated that it was meant for apocalyptic, in fact in one of it he actually mentions, he just wanted to live a simpler life, I mean away form his responsibilities of course. He felt like he was just working pay check to pay check and his wife is just there to use up his money. Guy was clearly depressed, so it was implied that that was what its for. He said hell live his life however long he can before he get caught and that he didn't care anyway, and would go to the nearest town or something to rob and all that, if he ever needed money to get more supply.

Yeah it’d make sense if it was something super easy but building a whole bunker, planning the murder, actually going through with it, and then trying to cover it up is way more difficult than just getting a divorce or helping his family earn money…
I think what gets me about the fancy bunkers for rich people is that they would rather spend millions upon millions of dollars to build things like this than to contribute to clean energy, better access to healthcare, building gardens and other resources to combat food insecurity, building water filtration systems and educating people on their maintenance in places without access to clean water, housing the homeless, and so many other things that may help prevent whatever collapse or disaster they’re so afraid of. Rich people only fear the poor because they know their own sins and they know the debt that would be required of them.
Rich people have enough money to afford everything you've stated along with the bunker. The richest people are also known for donating huge amounts to charities.
But I can see why they built the bunkers first. Won't you want to provide security before doing anything else? And since they worked for their money they should be allowed to spend it according to their desires, no matter how stupid or selfish it might seem to everyone else. Also, the bunkers are mostly built to dodge nukes, which again no amount of healthcare or education is gonna avoid.

People who make ludicrous amounts of money haven't worked that harder than us, so personally I don't think they deserve to do whatever they want with it especially since they find ways to dodge even paying taxes on it which is even worse.
They also know they've fucked everything to the point of no return that their token millions to charities isn't going to help a damn. They don't want to change or fix anything.
To be very honest if in future I earn a lot of money and have enough money to buy a bunker for my family, I would.

I heard this case recently, its crazy how much time he had to change his mind and spare the lives of his family. His wife seemed so bright and creative, the videos of her make me tear up.

Right and from the looks of it if he was building the bunker for over 8 years and only built it for only one person to live in it it clearly shows that his plan from the get go was to not take his family with him can’t say if he always intended to kill them but he definitely didn’t have them in his future plans

Hi Stephanie, I wanted to recommend a case for you the case of Tristyn Bailey, her classmate stabbed her 114 times and during court her sister put 114 blue stones into a glass jar and after all Tristyns family and friends after they spoke at court they’d all put in a white stone for the pain they all now feel. i have chronic pain as well, there's not a day that goes by that i don't think of how society resents people like me. and to hear this guy say "my wife's just going to suck money out of me" as if she has no actual value as a person to him, as if she wasn't this amazing and kind person who loved him and accepted him and was loyal to him, as if the only thing that matters in life is how useful you are as a worker... hell is too good for a man like him.

I heard the podcast yesterday and afterwards I felt so sad inside. Just the thought of being married to someone who hates you and is plotting your murder terrifies me to the point where I would rather be single forever.

People can also be planning to murder you when you are single. In fact you are in MORE danger by being a woman who is alone with no protection. When my sister was in college, she did nothing but go to work and go to school and maybe a friends house now and then, and a murderer still decided to stalk her for no reason other than that she was nice to him in the store she was working at. She was able to survive the encounter just by being aware of her surroundings, but another poor young girl was not so fortunate.
It is incredibly rare for a spouse to kill their partner. You’re more likely to die in a car crash or falling off a ladder, than to be killed by your spouse. Do not let fear control you

They have all of it though. At least indoor gardens were mentioned in the description of the fancy bunkers. And sure, a home theatre sounds over the top, but lack of entertainment (esp. in stressful situations) is quite damaging/dangerous. It drives people insane.
In a documentary of a rescue of miners after a cave in i heard that the rescuers used the first little opening to give food, water and playing cards to the trapped people. Because apparently these three needs are a priority if the full rescue still takes some time. It stuck with me, mainly because i had never considered leisure time as so important. But games/entertainment -> mental health -> health is apparently a pretty direct pipeline.
hearing you validate lynette's experience made me cry. i have been struggling with chronic pain since i was 15. Im 20 now and i recently had to join the work force so i can move out and it's been so difficult, i spend all of my days off in bed and all of my time after work in bed because of the pain and my family just doesn't get that. it felt good to be validated as well. so thank you.

Just wanted to tell you, it CAN get better 💓 my mum has MS, chronic pain and chronic fatigue. She seriously struggled for most of her early 20s, her symptoms were at their peak. However, since I've been alive and essentially since that period in her life, she lives mostly a normal life. Occasionally, maybe every six months or so she will have a flare up but IT CAN GET BETTER. She puts it down to improving her diet (which I don't know if that's just her being an almond mum) but honestly she probably has just learnt how to better manage her symptoms 💓 IT CAN GET BETTER.
How have I only just discovered this channel? She does lesser known cases and is an incredible story teller and presenter and commentator.
More importantly, she does it in a respectful way while being in-depth and entertaining. And I love how she donates and supports actual helpful organizations.
Definitely my new favorite true crime channel of all time!
Right! Also I don’t know what it is about the way she story tells..but I have become hooked. Idk if it’s the cadence or the speed that she talks at but I can even work and still understand what she’s talking about so I almost always have one of her videos (this channel or another) playing lol.
I also completely agree on the respectful part! I have cried HARD after watching some of her videos just because she brings such a level of humanity to these cases..which is the way it should be imo. There are definitely some other UA-camrs I came across that cover crime cases and I got REALLY put off by it and had to skip because they seem almost excited or they try to promote crime-inspired games when talking about real life people who have lost their lives…not the time and place🫠

Staphanie did you hear about the very recent case in Antalya Turkey. 6 corpes where found stranded at the beach, inclueded was a small child and some of them were missing body parts. Its speculated there is a serial killer. I’d really appreciate your team’s research into it.
Regarding the difference between "survivalist" and "prepper":
Peppers are more focused on the ideas to eliminate the "what do we do?" element if some event disrupts normal operation of society. This most commonly involves stockpiling food and water, but also having some backup infrastructure. Like a backup generator, water filtration system and most importantly - skills and tools to sustain themselves and serve as a kernel of society around them.
Survivalists basically expect the collapse of society to be "every man for himself" scenario and are more focused on being able to survive potential confrontations with other survivors and get on top.
And here is a problem. Obviously a pepper is a more useful character. But survivalist is more "individualist" and thus more appealing to American psyche.

Apparently the dog went with him every time he went to work on his bunker, so they think he was paranoid that the dog would somehow lead the officers there…. But that doesn’t explain why he would kill the cat too.

Either he cared about the cat and/or dog (maybe he thought the dog would lead cops to him so he planned to kill him) and didn't want them to burn to death so he put them out of their misery, or he thought they'd make noise and the neighbors would notice too soon (thinking thwy somehow wouldnt notice the burning building) OR he just didnt give a fuck and just did it
I think the cat had to go too, there is a possibility that the dog told the cat where the bunker is, cats are notorious gossipers there's no doubt every cat in that neighbourhood knew about that bunker.

Speaking of human trackers, I have seen some youtubers that specialize in looking for people that are lost and it is so impressive how detail eyed these people are. One youtuber finds lost hikers on certain trails in Hong Kong I think it was and he was such an interesting watch. I feel like that's a positive shoutout during such a dark case. These people that track down humans do a phenomenal job.

I spent my summers in the north woods of Wisconsin. I haven't forgotten a single lesson my grandparents taught me -- they lived around the Leech Lake tribe area, up toward Iron Mountain, and we're part Ojibwe, so we had free pass to camp where we liked, far from the parks and the tourists. I learned so much about the wild, navigation, waste disposal and leaving things as close to how you found them as you can, the trick of landscapes as the sun sets, panic and disorientation, animals, flora, the dark, hunger, getting lost, how not to get lost...
Bottom line, what city folk hear and see in the wild feels supernatural to them sometimes. But it's the natural stuff you need to fear. Like this guy in the video.
The fact that the wife was so happy to get a small sum of money from him, enough to vlog about it, is a BIG red flag.

The way you described chronic pain was spot on! I have Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS). It’s one of the most painful conditions out there. For me, it feels like I have red hot needles poking my feet and legs. When I walk, it feels like I’m walking on glass and hot coals. I have special slippers that have gel packs built into them and I freeze them. It’s like ice packs for my feet shaped like slippers. I just had a spinal cord stimulator implanted last year just to help reduce the pain. There’s no cure and there’s no way to totally relieve the pain. Like Lynette, my partner gets me craft supplies to help my mental health and allow me to make things to contribute to our finances. Having chronic pain doesn’t just affect me, it affects my entire family! I worry a lot about my friends and family feeling resentful about having to care for me.

I’m right there with you, friend. I was born with fibromyalgia. I’m in constant pain with occasional flare ups that make the pain much worse, where anything that touches my skin is like sandpaper and I cramp up and am barely able to move. I am still able to work part time thank goodness, but I understand the depression of feeling like you need to contribute more than what you can, and never knowing when it will be a good day or a bad day. I also have learned to be crafty and hopefully one day I can turn it into a business to help my family and I can finally stay home. I’ve been so blessed to find a man who understands my situation and doesn’t think I’m just “over exaggerating” my pain. I take gabapentin and apply heat, and that is the only thing that helps me with the pain. I hope that one day you will be free from your pain! I’m just hoping and waiting that one day doctors and scientists will find a way to better help people with chronic pain.
When I was a kid, they didn’t even think fibromyalgia or nerve pain was even real, they’ve come a long way since then and now they have actual medicines that work instead of just throwing us pain pills that don’t work. I hope that means that in another 20-30 years, they will find something that works even better than what they have out now!

Yeah not only that, he was riddled with self-loathing and bitterness. Look, he was clearly a pretty intelligent and skillful individual even though that was demonstrated through such a brutal crime. Its obviously not easy to take care of a sick family member and be the bread winner of the family. But he could only do what he did because he saw his family as his property, not as individuals. On the Myan calendar - it was the start of a new calendar. I took an Archeology class in 2009 and my professor was a renowned Myan expert and we had extensive conversations about this and why people thought it was the end of the world. And how the Myan civilization didn't just die they migrated because of cultural issues and fighting that were arising with the Spanish. It was one of my favorite classes ever.
It's horrifying. Blows my mind how people can drag others into their own derangement . As a mother of two children I just can’t imagine how someone could be so messed up they could look at their wife and baby knowing you were going to kill them. Seeing things like this gives me that anger inside that just makes you want to cry for those poor girls. We never know what's going on in someone's head. Mental Illness I could excuse to a limit but things like this are sick beyond comparison.Maybe that’s why we should take them serious when they are willing to be open about how they feel.
I mean, these are femicides. As Stephanie said, they are his belongings, so he can choose over their lives.

As someone with chronic pain and illness, I struggle so much with guilt. I always feel guilty for costing my family so much money in healthcare. I feel so much for Lanette. 😢 She tried so hard to contribute in her own way and was trying to live her best life any way she could.
The way you described chronic pain is very accurate. I have arthritis on top of it all, so whenever it rains or the weather is cold, my joints ache so bad. People like Peter see people like me and his wife as dead weight. We need the help of modern medicine in order to live a “productive” life. And by productive, I mean not being stuck in bed for days or weeks at a time. I was born with hEDS and a chiari malformation. Pain has been my constant companion since I was a little kid. People like him think the world is better off without people like me, his wife and daughter. 😑
I'm so sorry that you feel guilt on top of having to deal with a painful illness. It was never your fault and you deserve human rights and dignity just like everyone else.
😢I'm lucky enough to live in Canada so I don't have to worry about money but I feel guilty all the time that I can't be the mom I was to my young kids or do normal things due to chronic illnesses

As someone with chronic pain, I really appreciate you taking the time to kind of explain what it’s like living like that. That’s one part of this case that always stuck with me. How resilient and strong and sweet his wife always seemed in her videos, despite how much she was suffering.
It was soo sad that mother daughter had this tragic death :( I still can't believe someone can have this much persistence and commitment towards something like this. Imagine if he worked with government he could've been a great help to human kind.

It would be so cool if you could cover the case of Helen Ruth Spence. Also known as the swamp Queen. She was a famous outlaw from the White River in Arkansas. It has a very small indigenous population. When her father was murdered,she sought revenge at his killer After the court failed her and her family.. She proceeded to become famous for escaping prison several times after sustaining extensive abuse in the female prison she was held in. Overall it's a very interesting case. Either way,i'm a long time viewer and I love the content.

Hiiii stephanieeee, I think you should do an episode on the Hawe Family Murders, It was a case where a man wanted to take his own life but decided to take his wife and two sons along with him. It happened a couple of years ago and he actually used to live 10 minutes away from where I lived and I even met him once! It's a really complex case!! Its not a really known case at all!

I grew up in Snoqualmie Valley where this happened! We literally used to go party, camp, hike, etc, in the woods she's talking about. I even went to the same high school, so this story is just crazy to me! It's also interesting to hear someone else's perspective on the woods. I find them peaceful...although, there have been times I've been out there and felt like someone was watching-not a good feeling😬
I used to live in Puyallup and have been in these woods many many times so its super weird hearing about the area by someone i watch haha.

Hi, disabled chronic pain experience here! I've been disabled for at least 7 years now and I am in literal pain all the time. It's like a positive feedback loop; the more pain from my disability is, the more I sleep and the more I sleep, the more pain. It has gotten to the point where I don't notice it when I'm busy so I stay busy.

Stephanie, there are so many reasons I love watching & listening to your videos. One of the reasons is that you cover several topics within the main story, as well as topics that are related to situations in the main story.
For example, when you started talking about living with chronic pain, I had to pause the video to take a moment to cry, as you explained it so well. I personally love with chronic pain myself, which started approximately 19 years ago; someone else ran a red light whilst at an intersection, hitting my friends car (I was the passenger), thus causing the car to be pushed off the over ramp and land on the side where I was sitting. It caused severe damage in my spine. I've also been diagnosed with a few autoimmune disorders, but the worst is Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS).
Heck, I'm married to a Doctor, & even he forgets how painful simple things in life can be for me, because my pain isn't visible, such as an injury like an open wound or a missing leg. Thank you for taking the time to discuss and explain the experience of one living with chronic pain.

Im born and raised in Washington state and i remember this whole ordeal. So sad for the family. Honestly I'm surprised that he built his bunker so close to everything. Like you said the cascade mountains are beyond huge. He would've had much better chance of survival somewhere further from civilization. Not that I'm not glad that he was that close and found. But still, it definitely shows that he really overestimated his abilities and his whole plan.

I mean he did go at least an hr off trail, perhaps it's easier to locate, also consider that he had to go back and fourth daily to built and prep. Any further probably would be a hassle and increase the potential to get lost.
He could've just divorced his wife and kept the house because hes the only breadwinner. He wouldnt even pay alimony because their kid was 18. He couldve just been divorced and lived in a bunker without having to kill anyone. He was clearly very unwell to say the least

In the state of Washington, the wife (or husband) is entitled to half of the money and property acquired during the marriage so for numerous legal reasons, he couldn't kick her out the house on the street and he would have to pay up. Even the bunker is half hers. It doesn't matter that she didn't contribute. Where did you even come up with that? That is why people say "it's cheaper to keep her," sign prenups or they do something like this. If you aren't married yet read up about what you are getting into... Lol

Fun fact, that underground bunker was first created during the Cold War because Kansas was a huge target for bombs because we build most of the airplanes for the military. Before it was remodeled it was used in a huge underground drug ring. The largest LSD bust in DEA history took place in those bunkers.
As someone with Chronic pain, it’s different for me mine constantly feels like my bones are popping in and out of place along with sometimes feel like my body is completely locked up and hurts to move and can never find comfort in anything such as laying down, sitting and any physical activity.
Thank you Stephanie, Mr. Mangobutt and the RMT for the research and sharing stories that are not well known and to help be an advocate for those that can’t speak for themselves or those who have been in horrible assaults and situations.
This story is so horrible, and feels eerie knowing that he was out there watching people and could quite possibly get away with it especially with how big the forest is.
This sounds like EDS which is a connective tissue disorder where your connective tissue is really stretchy and can't hold your joints in place.

That was my though exactly! It's hilarious to think of all those entitled narcissistic parasites buried in there together.. As IF any of them would contribute to work they associate with 'lowly people' like food prep, cleaning, etc. They'd just try to drag poor people (most likely impoverished women) into their little hellish dystopian sci-fi bunker to do all their grunt work, just like they do right now.
It's so backwards too. Instead of using their power and influence to make it better, they'd rather wait until the world reaches its boiling point so they can hide like cowards. I’ve been living with chronic pain for 16yrs. I’m on high doses of anti inflammatory & nerve blockers daily. I still manage to laugh & be positive, I had to ditch the pain killers as they interfered with my ability to parent. When I do my yard work, I spend days quietly crying, but if I have to live with it for life, I Won’t let it destroy who I am or give my kids a negative impact from it. It’s life, onwards always. I’m at day 3 now with no sleep at all, but I’ll stills smile and have a positive impact on my kids, they also know that once my youngest is 18…Mums going to check out - this does not have to be a sad thing, it’s also made my kids very close, because they know the have to look after each other, I won’t have my kids fail just because I have.😉 our mindset is our strength
Ive had it for about 13 years but im not able to do that😔 its probably because i cant even manage to get to the doctor or handle a blood draw to get put on the right meds though…

I have mental health & meds, they did put me on morphine patches but I’m allergic to them, I do have sleeping tablets regularly - I’m at 60 hrs no sleep and that makes it impossible to self manage the pain. I hope you find a good GP who listens & works actively towards helping you. Love & light to you

My kids know my daily struggles and know what I go thru daily to give them quality of life now, her eldest brother is 13yrs older, married and very well off, her big sister is in the top 10% of Australia academic ily, they how important their relationships to each other and are very aware and accepting - I can’t keep this up as it and I WON’T live a life trashed out on pain meds - because that’s NOT life or what I want my kids to remember me by.

I'm still in the middle of the video, but thank u so much for how you touched in chronic pain. Most of us with chronic pain are very overlooked or down played so thank u for describing it seriously like you did. It really is debilitating and can ruin every aspect of your life. I'm going thru divorce because of it for example. It's painful to even exist and most don't believe us.
I have two chronic pain conditions and I am a super kind person who tries to use my energy to make people happy. I know a lot of others like me we suffer and we don’t like seeing others suffer. I am disabled and often can’t get out of bed or my chair in the living room. I am never not in an incredible amount of pain but I have been in pain 24/7 for so long that the only thing I can do is enjoy what I can create art, read be kind etc.
