I am Colombian. I’m a human rights lawyer and had to meet him at the Jail where he ultimately died. (Where the right hand of Pablo Escobar died at too). After meeting him I had to take several showers and couldn’t sleep for days. He had eye cancer but was so paranoid and would not allow any doctor to check him. He believed that people were trying to kill him (which to be honest, it might be true). The prison where he died, it’s the worst one in the country. I’m glad you are Covering this case, he probably killed more than 300 innocent children.

As a Colombian I can say that my country despises these people, This is a completely horrid story, but sadly its not the only one. When people begin realizing this is BLOOD LINEAGE evil....we can finally get somewhere. These are demons walking...descendants of those Spaniards that conquered those lands. We will see STARK correlations in their love of torturing children and innocent adults, as far back as when they first arrived. THIS IS IN THEIR DNA.

I believe it is ultimately nature. I used to think otherwise and I think there’s a lot of people who would never turn to crime if they had all the right resources, but for monsters like this man it goes beyond anything that happened to him. There’s plenty more SA survivors out here who would never take a life or inflict the same abuse to someone else. We can’t forget that group despite these serial killers often having tragic back stories.

    • @AaronWentMissing
      @AaronWentMissing Рік тому +168

@@13realmusic I disagree; you can argue that his nature predisposed him to that path, but ultimately his environment is what put him there. I'd say a mixture of growing up in a cartel-ridden third world country like Colombia, abuse and SA from his father + family friend, and bullying from better-off kids at school definitely caused serious mental health issues growing up. His motives and strategies in how he kills, along with the ideologies he grew up with, is something that's unusual even when compared to other serial killers. You can't really compare him to other SA survivors because ultimately, SA is only one of the things that sent him down this path.

Honestly his childhood isn’t an excuse. I’m Colombian so is my father and he was abused 10 times worse than he was. His father was a drug addict. He cut his arm open infront of my father when he was 5 because his mother bought him a costume for dia de las brujas with the money he was gonna steal to buy drugs. My fathers grandmother best my father every day of his life simply for looking like his father. She would use opened up wires she made with pliers to beat him. He was cut beat and starved for his entire life until he left to come to America at 18. The only person that loved him which was his mother died right before he left. He had nothing and somehow lost everything including the childhood he never had. And instead of being evil, he met a wonderful woman and had 2 daughter and worked hard every day to be the best man he could possibly be. The things that are done to you do not define you, how you survive them is what defines you.

But it is an explanation. That's why criminal justice systems need to take crimes against children seriously, because head trauma and abuse can create the conditions for a child to develop into a monster and perpetuate suffering. The abuse permanently changes the brain, lowers IQ, and can absolutely lead a person to becoming violent. We need to acknowledge this so we can prevent these crimes from happening. If Luis' mother had the support to leave his father safely, or if Luis had the support of CPS, if there was intervention at any point, there's a good chance all of this would have been avoided.

It's a terrible part of human psychology. This is why childhood environments need to be protected more closely everywhere around the world, and even still in first world countries. Plenty of people with the same mental health issues go on to live perfectly normal and healthy lives but the environment is what sets regular people and serial killers apart.

I'm Chilean, a Spanish speaker, and an avid researcher of true crime. I'm glad a true crime channel is covering this case since it is quite insane.
A few notes, he was set to be released in 2039 when there was even a whisper about him being paroled back in 2021, Colombia's president at the time, Ivan Duke, said he was not seeing the light of day again and it would be impossible for him to be paroled anyway since his crimes were aginst children and colombian law forbids early release for those crimes. He was also involved in crimes in Venezuela (allegedly) and Ecuador, he was actually trialed in Ecuador and had a 22-year prison sentence waiting for him, the moment he was out of the Colombian prison he was to be extradited to Ecuador to respond for his crimes there too.
Another point, a "Garabato" in Colombia specially is a long curved stick used by males in a traditional dance, so being called a Garabato was more like saying he was a "hunchback", more like that type of insult and since he had quite the bad posture it didn't help much.
Another interesting fact is that his body remains at the morgue, he was supposed to be cremated but it didn't happen, the family was mad (if you can believe it...) the body is undergoing several studies since the cause of death is said to be unclear, the statements say it was the cancer that killed him but they have had the body for more than a month now and they still haven't gotten a proper result. There is much talk of mysticism regarding his death since he died at 66 and you know how people are regarding the number of the beast and all that...
There are several Chileancases I would love for you to cover ;-; I'll wait for you to keep doing your wonderful job ♡

I'm glad you mentioned that his crimes were not a reflection of his sexuality. I think he directed his anger at boys so they could suffer the same way he did and didn't feel he would achieve that with girls. Being a victim of SA myself, I have never felt the urge to become an abuser but I can see how it happens if you don't get the appropriate help. In Latin American countries there is so much stigma attached to these crimes against children, we don't talk about it. My childhood was similarly violent to this killer's childhood. I was beaten with 2x4s, belts, metal spoons, etc. I was made to sleep outside in half naked, made to stand on asphalt in summer until it burned my feet,. It escalated over time to firearms, being shoved off of a roof, and being beaten into unconsciousness multiple times a day. I was also SA'ed by a different abuser and had no safe person to seek help from about that. Despite having extreme emotional and mental trauma from my childhood, I've never killed anyone. The abuse is a cause for this killer's choices, but not an excuse or an absolutltion. It is unfair, but it's our responsibility as victims to seek therapy and not allow our past to hurt other people.

I'm truly sorry you went through that. But thank you for showing people that just because you had horrible experiences doesn't give you the right to cause horrible experiences. You're absolutely correct that it's unfair that it becomes the victim's responsibility to find a healthy way to heal. But by doing so, you help yourself have a better life and can choose to help others who can relate and don't know how to help themselves. Although we are unable to change the past, we can always change our futures by choosing to use our negative experiences to create positive outcomes and turn our pain into a source of strength and empathy for others. I'm still trying to heal myself. I hope you continue to heal as well.

Just something to know. Your brain doesn't do it for minor things, so you feel the full force of the pain without any dampening or cushioning... hence why small things like that feel so painful sometimes.

Hi Stephanie, sorry to bother you but I’m an Italian fan. I’ve been listening to your podcasts and videos on Rotten Mango, MissMangoButt and Stephanie Soo almost everyday for the past six months, I really love your videos and I hope you’re well.
I’m writing you this comment because at the moment Italy is in pure chaos, the most recent femicide case filled everyone with indignation and the case is really really popular in Italian mainstream media. We have a huge problem with femicide, I believe Giulia Cecchettin was the 105th case this year and there are already new cases coming up since her death. Her sister is speaking up for every woman in Italy and she’s being attacked for no reason, accused of being a satanist and basically hated just because she’s a woman and she’s speaking up. Our society has a huge problem, but there’s a shameful amount of people that don’t realize this, and I believe that if this case was made known worldwide it would spread awareness and maybe we can turn these terrible murders into a significant change.
As Elena, Giulia’s sister said: “For Giulia don’t do a minute of silence, for Giulia burn everything and make sure she’s the last”.
This is why I’m asking you if you think it would be possible for you to talk about this case in a Rotten Mango episode, I would be willing to help with translation or with the research it that could be useful too… I really hope you take this message into consideration🙏🏻
    Love and hugs from Italy💗

Especially when things like Domestic violence against women is already such a serious issue worldwide but even more so in South American, African, Indian, etc countries. She said he was so highly liked in the community and the fact that she was face to face with a victim and John wasn’t arrested or caught yet is wild. This was the 70’s and justice was rarely the goal. The families wanted to keep things private. It was seen as something to keep to yourself out of family “embarrassment” which is so so recasting.

, but think about your soul , where is it headed?
Bible talks about happenings that will happen in end times , prophecies being fufilled right now! research for yourselves if u dont believe!
thats why we need to repent and trust in Jesus for eternal life
because wages of sin is death
but Jesus died for all of our sins and therefore paid for them so we wouldnt go to the "jail" , aka hell
He gave us free choice out of love, if u love someone ur gonna let the person go,,, but He is also justice , sin to God is a huge deal
But He still made a way out of the "jail"
Only if people accept Him they are promised that they will not go to hell for their sins but have everlasting life!
rich and poor , abused or not-
all of you will die someday
please people i beg u think about your souls, life is so small compared to eternity...Most people think about the world and r
      moments of right now
, Think about your soul , where is it headed?
      Psalm 14 1
The fool says in his heart, "There is no God." They are corrupt, their deeds are vile; there is no one who does good.
For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. Romans 1:20
please people i beg u think about your souls, life is so small compared to eternity...

Likewise, his fear of the dark seems to indeed confirm that he has that fear of the supernatural or spiritual infrastructure.

It wasn’t the fact that he was g*y or anything like that, it’s the fact that his DAD and another man did those things to him and he was prob only bullied by only boys. I think his thinking process was that he wanted other boys to feel how he felt when he was vulnerable and in that position. Idk, it’s all sick and disgusting. He only did that to little boys as a sick twisted way to gain control over what happened to him. The feelings of control were enough to be carried over into sexual gratification... He did not develop emotions like the average person, his feelings were shallow.

I’m just going to put a random two cents in. Reference point 28:00. I really think the reason he targeted young boys wasn’t because he was gay or liked young boys sexually, it feels to me that he saw himself in those boys because (I’m assuming) that’s around the age he was when he was first victimized se*ually. He might even see it as a way to punish his younger self for being so weak. When it comes to most people that were hurt as children, when they get older they usually feel the urge to protect children (at least in my case), but it seems like he just went the alternate route. Instead of wanting to protect a perceived “young him”, he wanted to “punish” them.

There were also jokes about which tv channel would be the first in making a series about the beast, they were only jokes, but it turned out to be true, because later HBO announced a series, when my family and i saw the trailer we were so disgusted, like the guy just died and immediately after theres a series?
