Factitious Disorder by Proxy

  • Dee Dee Blanchard, mother of Gypsy Rose, was the focus of The Act on Hulu and Mommy Dearest, Mommy Dead on HBO. Dee Dee Blanchard was accused of abusing her daughter Gypsy Rose because of Factitious Disorder by Proxy (which used to be called Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy).
Now Factitious Disorder can be something we impose on ourselves as well as something we impose on someone else. The only difference is that one is called Factitious Disorder and the other is called Factitious Disorder by proxy. Basic Factitious disorder is diagnosed when someone falsifies physical or psychological signs or symptoms, or even causing injury or disease associated with the falsification. Meaning that someone will fake they are sick and even harm themselves to create the same symptoms and fool a doctor or other provider. They must also present themselves as ill, impaired, or injured. This behavior must still happen even when there aren’t any outside rewards. And finally this must not be happening because of a different mental illness like delusional disorder or any other psychotic disorder. The criteria is the same for Factitious Disorder by Proxy, except that the person who has this disorder is pretending someone in their life is ill. So in the “by proxy” diagnosis the perpetrator (not the victim) receives the diagnosis of Factitious Disorder by Proxy.

What works for narcissism because it seems like it might be the same type of therapy
There seems to be some narcissism in this it might be worth looking into that stuff
I mean a narcissist also lies and is probably mandated to go to therapy if it's bad enough
Maybe that narcissism doesnt tend to really hurt others like this does
I have heard about this awhile ago but never knew its name but that it existed and it's horrible I wouldnt be surprised if I first heard about it from the show the practice
Since all of the eps are gone or changed so it's not so twisted that ep if there was one cant be found
(The practice is the series before Boston legal so it's a show about Massachusetts law for the most part)

No one can convince me Gypsy deserved jail time. The mental, physical, and emotional abuse she endured is horrific and it's a miracle she didn't end up dying at the hands of her mother. Gypsy has actually said she doesn't mind her sentence because she feels more free in prison than she did living with her mother. Just sad.

It’s disgusting. I’m sorry the old child abuser died. If only she was still alive and on a feeding tube.

She had her mother murdered. Law says she deserves jail time. That's why prosecutor did a deal because many jurors would think like you do and they might have gave her lesser charge or acquittal altogether. 10 years with parole after 7 is a slap on the wrist for murder 2

I know this too well. My mother made me sick basically up until she left my family. Poisoned my food, hurt me...you name it. I threw up every day at school from kindergarten to grade 5. She emotionally and physically abused me to the point where I felt trapped, she terrorized my whole family. I sympathize with Gypsy so much. I'm so glad she left me at age 12, it could have gone much worse.

My dad did this... He was a mental health worker, therapist etc.
I am adopted at birth. Yet I was inappropriately diagnosed with RAD disorder and forced to doing “holding therapy”. Was started on tons of medications for all types of things since I was 6-18years old.
I went through TONS of health care professionals, therapists and the like. If my dad didn’t like them...We immediately switched even if I liked them.
It all stopped when my dad made me go to an evaluation for Bipolar Disorder. I sat with the man and told him my truths. He said I didn’t have ANYTHING at all. Including what I had already been diagnosed with.
He told my dad he wouldn’t give me any medication and my dad blew up on him!
Thankfully I saw nothing was wrong with me at 18 and immediately moved out the house.
I’ve been medication free for 8 years now and have no issues what so ever. I’m married with children and happy.

He was more interested when I had “issues”. To this day he brags about dealing with my issues to others. It’s uncomfortable

Him just being worried and overly cautious would not warrant tons of medications, specialists or flipping out at someone who does not agree.

This happened to me and my sister. My mother convinced my sister and me that we had celiac disease, lactose intolerance, various severe food allergies, asthma, gastrointestinal reflux disorder, and various mental health issues. Obviously, not as severe as Gypsy Rose but we still underwent endless medical procedures as kids including endoscopies and staying in the hospital for long periods of time while the doctors tried to figure out what was wrong with us (spoiler: nothing). My diet was really limited as a kid because my mother told me I couldn't eat so many different foods. My sister underwent countless allergy tests and had to carry around EpiPens for years for allergies she didn't even have. We lived in fear because we thought that we were sick and fragile. It was only when I was 19 that I ran away from home and realized that I was perfectly healthy, which came as a complete shock after years of trips to the doctor. My sister, who is a few years younger than me, is still dealing with the aftermath.

Think about the reason.... this subject....Munchausen syndrome by proxy is a mental illness and a form of child abuse. The caretaker of a child, most often a mother, either makes up fake symptoms or causes real symptoms to make it look like the child is sick. Does this sound like the trans kid agenda to anyone else???? There might be a few trans kids out there but majority of them their moms fit this definition.

I knew a woman who was accused of FD by proxy. I met her while I was hospitalized for suicidality and severe depression, and something was definitely off about her story. She and her husband were divorced after they had three children together. She told everyone how sick all three children were with rare conditions and multiple confusing symptoms. She wanted all three children to have procedures to have feeding tubes placed. She said her ex-husband did not believe that the children were sick and did not give them the treatments she believed they needed whenever they stayed with him. She was very upset about the possibility of losing custody of the three children. I never found out why she was hospitalized... she was very anxious to get back out to her kids. I could never put my finger on what felt off about her, but I found myself siding with the ex-husband having never met him or heard his side of the story. I really hope those kids are safe, regardless of what the truth was.

I reported her to the pediatrician and nothing was ever done. The oldest child was put on so many antipsychotic drugs but he did not need them. She was torturing her own son, starving him too, I reported that as well. Dr’s really don’t have a clue, not all but most. Conventional medicine fails us 90% of the time.

I was a victim of a mild case of this throughout childhood. The gaslighting really messes you up and not having any adults to turn to because they all believe your mothers manipulation leaves you so isolated. You are not sure what is true even after doing stuff like secretly eating food that you are supposedly intolerant to and having no reaction to it. Your like "why am I hyperactive for running around playing tag but none of the other kids are?" "Is this a rash or is it goosebumps?" "does crying mean I am having a mood swing or is this a normal reaction to emotional or physical abuse?"

My wife has been recently diagnosed with Fictitious Disorder by proxy. They are so good at manipulation that even though I have had suspicions for awhile I was convinced that I was a terrible father for not wanting to find out what's wrong with my kids. It wasn't until she had enough of me that she left me with the kids and moved 3000 miles away and within 2 weeks 100% of the medical issues went away. My youngest was in a power wheelchair at 3 and had a feeding tube since she was 2. I have since taken the gtube out and it's been 10 months with no symptoms.

Kati, great videos. I want to comment on BURNT-OUT. I think that I developed burn out a few years ago. Work was probably a major factor. But I think that the bigger factor was my toxic personal life. Since I started developing symptoms, I educated myself alot about stress, narcissism, codepdendency, burn out and boundries. Working in the ER is a high stress job, which I did for years. What I think got me in the end though, was all the toxic people in my personal life - so many people, who are "unsafe" according to dr.Cloud's book about Safe and Unsafe people. When I was not at work, I was constantly in the presence of people, who were energetically draining me - energy vampires of different categories (Julie Hanks's described them in a video). Some yelling, constantly complaining, some talking non stop for an hour about themselves, some cutting me off mid sentence in a dysrespectful manor, when I was talking; mom schizofrenic, brother passive-aggressive (always late, forgetting, etc.), father nacisssitic controlling - so many unreliable people in my personal life. My therapist says I was constantly being attacked (non physically). I see it as constant chaos and dysrespect. I was doing so very well in my own personal life that year (got married, bought a condo, passed a college course), but all those other people were all headed or already in personal crises (all of them). My choice was and has been to either be at home with only non-toxic husband or be among people, none of whom are OK. I wish there were videos out there about this. I could probably have managed work and one toxic person, but that many "unsafe" dysfunctional people in my life drained me. I could not socialize and relax at the same time. Every family gathering was and is toxic. Sometimes it's not about the individual one factor, sometimes it's about an accumulation of toxic factors. The solution - minimizing contact with so many people has left me in a place of loneliness, much grieving took and is taking place.

Hi Kati! I'm a Juvenile Probation Officer, I love your videos! I work with a lot of youth that have the mental health diagnoses you discuss, they are very insightful. I have an interesting case that involves a parent that would initiate and provoke the adopted children to the point they were charged with battery. An example would be the parent holding down the children and slapping them, the child would push past the parent to get away from the attack, then the parent would call the police for the child shoving the parent (in my state any unwanted physical contact can be considered a criminal act - battery). The parent did not get charged as their actions were treated as discipline, where as the child was arrested. This is just some minor information that led to department's intervention and eventually the children being removed from the parent's custody. Could Factitious Disorder by Proxy expand beyond the faking of illness of a child and be displayed through attention given to the parent/guardian by the criminal justice system? Or would this just be considered abuse?

Gamestopgirl29 Hey, I’m not a psychologist, but I’m pretty sure that my mother has this condition. It did not involve illness, but she would always “save” my brother and I. As in, she would never help us with anything, but when we failed then she would swoop in and “save”. The problem is that often she was causing the problems. Like she would give me bad advise, I would go and do what she said and fail, then she would go around to relatives and her co workers, even bosses I had, and talk about how she has to help me, and my brother, that we can’t do anything without her. I could give a number of examples, but won’t. So, I would say the situation you described is the same thing, parents causing a situation the hurts the child, that they use to get attention. I think limiting to just causing illness is really limiting and can hurt people.

Hi Katie, thank you for making a video on this subject. I am very interested in factitious disorder because I believe my mother exhibits symptoms of it. Her whole life she has used various illnesses and injuries to gain sympathy and attention; always playing the victim. As a child, I too was always in and out of the hospital and I believe that was because my mother was again trying to gain sympathy by having a sick child.
However, I genuinely believe she also has narcissistic personality disorder, so my question is: is there evidence of a connection between these two disorders, or is it possible she suffers from two separate issues? She has always been incredibly charismatic and manipulative, using people as pawns to get what she wants. I have always seen the illness issue as part of her manipulation. But perhaps she also has factitious disorder, and that just strengthens her ability to manipulate. I’m an adult now, and have very little contact with her, but I do always worry because it’s like the boy who cried wolf... I want to be able to help her when she genuinely is ill, but never know if I can trust her. And there is no chance in getting her any kind of help or therapy because she doesn’t believe there is anything wrong with her behaviour.
Thank you for taking the time to read this. You do really fantastic work.

My mother is exactly the same. She's sick, in a wheelchair now, and part of me wants to be there for her... but, she's beyond toxic and bitter, so I'm taking a break in communication with her right now. I was always sick as a child, rushed to hospitals, with no clue or reason as to why I was sick. The last time I got sick (at age 29), I knew it was the LAST TIME it would happen, as my mother was disappointed and not happy that the hospital staff wasn't paying much attention to her and was focused on me - the patient, with odd serious symptoms. And sure enough, I never got mysteriously ill again and when I moved from Philly to Minnesota - my health completely improved. I was once diagnosed with major heart issues in Philly, but seemingly magically, all signs of that have been erased and I have a strong functioning heart now. The only difference is that I no longer live with my mother.
Anyway, my point is... it's scary that there are mothers like this out there in the world. And I wanted to let you know that you're not alone, ginkoknit! I wish you a very awesome day! ^_^

My mum told people throughout my childhood that I had a gluten allergy that I was lactose intolerant, that I suffered from low blood suger, that I was sensitive to suger. She was convinced I had autism. When my regular doctor told her I didn't meet the criteria she spent £1000 to get me diagnosed privately telling the psychologist I had no friends and had all these problems I didn't have, I had loads of friends when I was 11. When I was 13 she restricted my diet not letting me have anything to eat all day apart from a green smoothie. When I became severely under weight she did take me to the doctor. The doctor told me that I needed to eat everything that would make me gain weight because my bmi was 15 at the time. After this my mum convinced everyone in our community that I had an eating problem and brought this on myself. No one believed me when I spoke out I was 13 and they all believed her because she was so good at portraying the sweet mother act. She refused to let me be vaccinated against cervical cancer when I was 12 and told me that if my friends got vaccinated they could die. I went to school terrified the next day that my friends would die.
Only now at 24 years old I am seeing the reality of what she put me through not to mention that she use to hit and punch me frequently as a child mostly if I disagreed with her. I'm currently suffering with a chronic illness pots syndrome, anxiety and depression. I've finally understood that my issues come from my childhood but didn't realize it at the time and even though my mum was no where near as bad as gypsys her story has helped me see what my mum was truly like. I hope when gypsy comes out of prison she can help other people who have been through similar things to her. Watching the act helped me realize what my mum was truly like!

He's a bad actor, and who has someone following them around ALL the time videoing them??? These kittens are always alone, and look to be around 5-6 weeks in age.... I reported him to You Tube just now, and wanted to get clear on M. by proxy....
Will you look @ this man's videos, and see if what I'm saying is true, and then also report him? I want to find exactly where he's at so I can call an animal wellfare and report what he's doing. His channel says united Kingdom, but does that include Philipines, Myramar, Thailand, etc.??? HE and where these vids are being made are clearly in some tropical country not England, etc. It makes me sick that people do this. Sadly growing up one of my aunt's friends had muchausen by proxy. I vaguely remember being told her mother had it too and that's how people knew to look out for it with her having her own kid. But Initially noone really noticed or atleast i remember the rationalisations of her distress, after all it was her first baby and everyone understands how scary and nerve wracking it can be. But as he little boy just wasn't hitting targets and was always very pale, ate little, etc etc it became increasingly worrying. The friends and family tried to help explain to her with her doctors that everything was okay but he was malnourished due lack of available food, she believed anything he ate would potentially kill him, he was allergic to everything and he was weak etc (not untrue by this point). He was 4years old before social services stepped in, they did try to help and get her help etc etc. But sadly it wasn't enough. I'm unsure on all the details but she started leaving him at home and disappearing, she disappeared for two days, he ended up with the neighbours. By the time she came back he'd been taken away. In the end (the last I heard and saw him) he was adopted by the neighbours, name changed, and my gosh the difference a few months and a few good meals makes. He adjusted to his new life while his mum got the treatment she needed although I've not heard of them ever since.

In medicine of all sorts there’s been a move away from referring to almost any given condition by the name of the person who discovered it to more precise names that are actually descriptive of the disorder. As a medical student I am thankful for this trend, as it’s extremely difficult to memorize a bunch of old white guys’ names and associate them with complicated conditions. It’s much easier to learn thousands of medical syndromes and diseases when the name tells you what the chief problem is.

It's hard to call the parent out on it, because nobody wants to accuse the parent of the sick child of faking it. And the child has been groomed since birth to say they are sick and to keep up the story.
Kids take meds that make them have certain side effects that are common for certain illnesses, even suck on matches to get a stomach ache, and are told to tell the doctor they are really sick and to exaggerate symptoms. Simply for attention for the parent, free items, and attention.
This poor girl shouldn't be in prison. The boyfriend should, he enjoyed murdering this woman. The daughter desperately wanted out.

This scares me so much...! I remember when I was little I was sick ALL the time..I couldn't understand why...turns out being in an abusive household will entertain and nurture sicknesses.. decades later.. my kids used to think I was a bad parent because I rarely take them to doctors.. I mean..they are healthy & awesome..

Ah yes the mother in Sharp Objects has this! Great video Kati ❤️

The most terrifying part of this situation is that the victim's surrounders don't notice the mother's illness. But I think there is a worse case, for example in Sharp Objects where the father knows that her wife is abusing their child, but he pretends that everything is fine...

You should also do a video on this topic but specifically when it is a psychological condition being imposed as well as one on the crossover between Munchausen by proxy with Narcissism.

Honestly, I am glad she didn't lose her life to her mother. I believe what happened was to enable her to live, her mother would have either killed her or died from her diabetes anyway. She was not taking care of herself so I believe if she didn't eventually kill Gypsy while making her seem like she had cancer, she would have probably killed herself.

Hi Kati, I am so interested in this topic at the moment and have been reading a lot of books about it, and some real case studies. It is a fascinating disorder.

awesome video as always. I was wondering if you would consider doing a coffee and a chat video about this case specifically? I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on it. I’ve been interested in this case for a while and would like to hear other people’s perspectives on it.

Hi, unfortunately, the video was deemed as not monetizable and therefore it ends up being a topic that takes more effort than ultimately is worth... The sad economics of being a UA-cam video producer.... ugh.... Thanks for the kid words about the video, I appreciate them and you for watching :) I hope your weekend is nice :)

9-10% of children who are victims of factitious disorder by proxy die because of the abuse, but not 9-10% of ALL children die because they're somehow affected by a disorder with a lower prevalence than that. I thought that was worded a little unclearly the two times that it came up. At first I was completely shocked and wondered where the 1/10 "sick" and dying children were among the people I knew.

I never knew this was a thing. This is so shocking and disturbing to me, especially because it harms so many children! 😟

Ciaza sounds like intrusive thoughts, it’s a form of anxiety! Anxiety and depression go hand in hand sometimes. It can fall into like obsessive thoughts

I personally at one point thought it was all in my head.... Because it is... I didnt 100% grasp what depression does to you untill I was put into in patient .... But you should talk to a therapist they'd be able to refer you to the right help

While it is possible to fake having depression, I don‘t think that applies to your situation... I had very similar thoughts when I was depressed, and it is the depression telling you that you are not deserving, and constantly putting you down. If you did fake depression in an FD sense, you would know you faked it and you probably wouldn‘t think about it this way, as you would be too concerned with keeping up the facade of being ill.
I hope you receive the help you need
