The late Sijo Leon Trescott in Hamilton NJ used to teach a kung fu system that incorporated many basic two person drills, stances, offensive and defensive methods from Shorinji Kempo. He freely and proudly admitted it and said he learned i tin college. I didn't realize how much of that influence was in the basic levels of his art until the internet became a thing and I saw this and other videos. It became a way of getting beginners proficient in defending themselves then later he'd incorporate lots of Hung Gar, and Choy Lay Fut techniques as well as Chin Na.

I would like to thank you very much for this upload! The martial arts techniques shown here are excellent! This training on wooden floor is pretty tough and the shiatsu techniques are very impressive.
It seems the founder is full of contradictions: A Japanese spy working against China and teaching what he thought would be the martial arts from the Shaolin temple. Then he developed his own interpretation of Buddhism. He also worked in the black market but did not harm the locals. His best friend millionaire according to the documentary is in a far-right political party.
The narrator says “the sect is in the process to make a cult of Doshin So.” And
“He found he could attract young people by teaching them fighting. And then move into Buddhism.”
Even a blind person can see so many red flags.
I wish I'd gone to hombu to study full time in 1985 when I left Uni, I don't think I'd have ever left!

The "german badge" is the swastika, which originated in Hindu/Buddhist culture and was corrupted by Hitler and the Nazi party. It originally meant "fruitfulness" or the movement/cycle of energy between heaven and earth. You will find the swastika on many ancient statues of the Buddha, directly over the heart. So, yes, it IS a part of their design, as they are trying to return as closely as possible to the original teachings of the Buddha, and the fighting arts express by Bodhidharma.

I'm practising kempo karate at the moment, and i am going for my orange belt this november. I am doing a kata by the name of kihon. It is very easy to do. Hopefully this documentary will show me the path of true karate.

My "katas" in kempo have different names.... Like "Tench-kin Dai Ike" and "kihon" is what we call the formal/lined up part of class.
... I swear it feels like asking about a southern church trying to track the martial arts lineages. 😂

Despite Shorinji Kempo being a great martial art, it's Buddhist principles and philosophy clashes with those who are not Buddhist and would want to get into this fighting art.
It is why I decided to train in another system of Karate such as Kyokushin as Shorinji Kempo clashes with my Christian (Roman Catholic) faith.
Than youare very mitaken my friend. Buddism does not "clash" with any religion.
The thing is I'm not a Buddhist, I'm a Roman Catholic. The practitioners of Shorinji Kempo are Buddhist especially those in Japan.
It give you that feeling that you need to be a Buddhist or be converted to one in order to train in Shorinji Kempo.
flip1sba That is a very Christian way of looking at it. I am not religious in any way (wich does not mean i disrespect anyone who is) but purely looking at them from a distance i do get the impression that it is more that other religions that have a problem with Bhudism than the other way around. However if that holds you back to at least find out if you could practise... If it just fore the Martial arts then please dont fix on one or the other there are many styles out there that focus on the same principals. I would advise you then to find a school in your area that does the same kind of techniques and were you are happy training. That is way more important than the name on de the door..
aquadragon1 Even if I'm Roman Catholic, I respect other religions or faiths as long as they respect mine and not force their beliefs.
Again, I'm training in Kyokushin Karate. And the system itself respects all religion as with our dojo oath,

flip1sba karate has origins with the chinese martial arts as well as okinawa and japan, meaning some of its roots come from Taoism. if you want a Christian Martial Art, look up Systema, a russian system that has roots in western warriors.
@ Betty O Toole, do you practice American Kenpo Karate as that developed by Ed Parker? Shorinji Kempo is of a different system, different history and different principle.
Striking is ok but, the throws are unrealistic,
I think that's a super fair point. What made you say it?
I really enjoy my kempo practice and I'm very novice, but yeah... There's no way my tiny hands hold a wrist or palm long enough for the throws I'm seeing the higher belts do without some intermediation on my part. It's as if the pin takes too long before the throw (for me, as of now, anyway) whereas in the tiny bit of aikido I attended they sort of melted together faster. I could get someone off-balance and away from me with an imperfect grab. Not in kempo... Miss that pin and all momentum vanishes. In aikido my smaller size felt like a greater advantage. In kempo I'm supposed to stay much closer to the opponent for more... "love taps." And I practice, but in my head I'm just unlikely to be powerful and fast and accurate enough for some of the techniques to seem useful.
If you made it this far, does any of that make sense to you in your experience? Or is my novice status showing?

It's totally make sense now why Japanese kempo(Kam/Kem-bo) practitioner claimed their fighting art is a prayer stance(Similar to Angkor kem-mae/Kam-mae/Khmer/
khom-met fighting stances) depicted on Angkor Wat/Vat.

Example western claimed Cambodia became /converted to Buddhist after 13 centuary a.d?? haha...
But yet ancient Chinese Scriptures from around 5 centuary claiming ancient khmer/Kam-mae help translated buddha manuscripts to ancient china.
So really cool martial art. But I don't like the cult like aspect of it.
The last part seems fake. (The vital points "knock out").
I've taken part it a "knock out Demo." believe me it's very real.
The history told here is not the real history of shorinji kempo.
I like the spiritual part of Shorin ji kenpo where they recite creed on virtue. I hope Christian karate practitioners should also have such kind of martial art practice and culture to imbibed the learners spiritual self discipline that they may not become like some people who learn Martial Arts to become tough guys bully since they are trained in the art of killing---Karate. Christian karate practitioners should become like the apostle of Jesus who draw his sword and cut the ear of one of those soldiers arresting Jesus, his master or Lord. this I think is a practical Christian and down- to- earth one. he will not hesitate to strike in defense of his life, limbs, spouse, relatives or stranger.
Jesus was being arrested for breaking the law, do you think people should attack the cops arresting their friends?

Michael the archangel is the patron saint of warriors. I always think of him when practice martial arts. In fact I silently recite the Michael the archangel prayer while everyone else is doing the dojo creed.

I second that. "The swastika is a symbol of peace" but this guy was ex-military and in league with far right-wing Japanese nationalists, and they are covered in swastikas like it was the only important Hindu/Buddhist symbol. Fucking disgusting to realize just how right-wing the karate community tends to be.
That is complete nonsense - that there were right-wing-nationalist in the Japanese Karate community 30 years ago is beyond doubt. There were right-wing-nationalists in the real-estate-business and a lot of other places as well. That does not indicate that there are more nationalists in the karate-community than anywhere else, does it.
And what does the swastika have to do with that? I has been used in Far-Eastern religions and in North Scandinavian paganism and everywhere else in between for a millenium or two. Just because Nazis have used for about one century - in a totally diffent grafic context - doesn't make every other swastika a right-wing symbol.

I don't know, but it may have been. Then again, what is far right wing in Japan. It is obviously not the far right-wing that wants Japan to rise from the ashes and become a superpower again - like the neo-nazi right wing in Germany. And there was also no-one talking about them being superiour to others, only to do everything to make the country the best it can be, period. That is very chauvenistic, but can I blame anyone for wanting to put all their effort into protecting and making their country perfect - whatever that means. No I can't.
That right wing powers will have had more power to grow after WWII in Japan than in Germany, however, is a clear fact. Just like the USA was forced to cooperate with the Mafia in Italy they were forced to cooperate with Yakuza to gain any control at all. And Yakuza, more than Mafiosi, have their nose in legal businesses and overtly mingle in politics.
I had a lot to do with Karate people from Japan in the 80es. I did not find any of them extreme in any direction. But these Shorinji Kenpo guys are not average.
Octopussyist Any group that fraternizes with right-wing groups, and does not explicitly state they are for keeping welfare for the homeless and poor and sick, are effectively (and not just in claim) anti-pimp but pro-sex-worker (possible, since the SJK group seems to have had a literal war with the yakuza in the countryside), and are pro-LGBT ... is not someone I trust to follow the Mahayana Buddhist canon. Sad thing is, I so strongly doubt almost anyone does follow it, anywhere, anymore, that I'm not a Buddhist myself.

And still: None of the main stream Karate-guys from Japan that I met in the Eighties had any extreme political views. That was the point I was commenting in the first place.
