Shout out to the old people that still believe in themselves, as that karateka there in the red belt, an inspiration to me. Sadly I wish my parents and peers around me would take that same intiative, instead of trying to bully me or bring me down for practice karate. Anyways God bless

saw this series many years ago,at the time training for shodan, was inspired,.this is how it should be,and now is even in corners of england,Osu a way realised.
Currently training Shotokan. It seems quite a bit different than Gojo-Ryu, but of course they are both still karate. It's great to watch videos like these, of authentic Okinawan (or sometimes Japanese) masters and practitioners. It reminds me of what I'm striving towards (no matter how far off I am) in the dojo. And it also reminds me that karate is more than just technique, and that it is indeed a way of life. Enjoyed this one, thanks.

Thanks for the video series. I watched them all on BBC TV , way back from 1982/83. It's a pity that no one has digitalised the wonderful series. Perhaps, the BBC, should give it a thought.
A correction about Shotokan in Japan, Funakoshi continued to promote Karate as an orthodox art and Nakayama started the tournament concept, however there are still orthodox Shotokan dojo's, I was at one for about thirteen years, a small Japanese sensei who was tough as nails and taught it the old way, matches with him were grueling endurance tests, a fight for survival, it toughened one up to face potential reality, had some high school kids lay a beating on one chap some years ago across the street, I went to break it up, they surrounded me and threatened to kick the old man's butt (I was 59 yrs old), I stood in front of one of them, got within an inch or two of his face and told him, you get to throw the first punch and for your sake, you better hope it works.
They backed off and took off.
The truth often appears the moment we lock eyes. That's why they backed off.

Since Karate was first developed by members of the Pechin warrior class of Okinawa, who were the Okinawan equivalent of the Samurai in Japan, then I guess we can call Karate a "warrior" art, as it was intended for warfare.

This movie was in a playlist full of "McDojos." Is that what you guys think this teacher is doing, operating a McDojo? He seems legit to me, then again I don't know anything about karate nor have I ever practiced it.
Pendejo 4 years late but this is the real stuff. Traditional Karate trains hard and brutal condoning.
His karate curriculum is for those who would like also to become a karate master and instructor like him. learn everything that can be learned.
While I myself tend to look down on sport-oriented Karate, such is more accepted by the general public and by schools and colleges, at least here in The Philippines.
And it is because of sport-oriented Karate or even Taekwondo why such has many practitioners in this country particularly the youth.
But I'm sure it is the same as with other countries as well.
Same with our own native art, Eskrima. Public schools tend to support the sport-oriented version instead of the more traditional and far more effective styles. And this is a message coming from a practitioner of the old ways.

Though it's great that Arnis has become our national sport via R.A. 9850 and has become mandatory to be taught in schools at some point, it has caused a bit of false assumption from the majority that all there is to it is the Baston/Stick when Filipino Martial Arts is a complete system of Martial Arts.
Same goes for people who assume Karate is defined by the Kumite they see in Batang Pinoy and the like.
Thus I always encourage people to come and train under (legitimate) dojos/schools to be enlightened about the truth behind the two Martial Arts that helped define me as a person since my childhood.

松濤館(Shotokan) 技(waza) or techniques are from the 首里手(Shuri Te) branch of
沖縄唐手(Okinawan Karate) lineage. So there should be some similarities and overlap.Now, saying that, the 道場 or dojo and 先生 or teacher you have will play a very large role in how and what you train. 君の白帯を結びます or (tie on your white belt) and start your new journey. Osu

Higaonna Sensei is great example of a karateka practicing daily still in his 80s.... sadly the story of him and Miyazato Sensei is not very true.....

For all the deficiencies of the commentary (ill-informed; and it seems to have inaugurated the irritating habit of calling Higaonna 'Higoanna') I thought this was a valuable and well made documentary. Since it was made, Higaonna has come in for a lot of adverse comment; Miyazato Ei'chi had no good word to say for him, and even his own teacher, Miyagi An'ichi, seemed to repudiate him before he died. No doubt all kinds of rivalries, grievances and political issues lie behind all this, but Higaonna certainly has not lived up to the image presented here, of a solitary guardian of pure and undefiled Okinawan karate. He has founded and until recently directed a worldwide organisation that has made him a great deal of money, and which has succumbed as readily as any other to the lure of 'sport' karate. On the other hand, how many of the people who have badmouthed Higaonna have ever met him, or trained with him, or are in a position to pass judgment on his karate? I don't like sell-outs either, but I readily acknowledge the man's very great technical ability, and his video recordings are a valuable training resource.
I wish they would have taken the time to pronounce Higaonna sensei's name correctly.
I Do not agree with McDOJOS as they cause harm , but this aspect of Karate is not such a thing , Martial arts is self expressive & it has hundreds of years unique groundings . i am fortunate to have survived thanks to martial arts & it is thanks to men like Morio that allow such self improvements

As with Master Higaonna, not all katas start as defensive. The Sokugi katas of Kyokushin start as an attack particularly The "Yoko-Geri".
Kyokushin IS Karate! And it is developed by one of the greatest karatekas of all time.
The fact Sosai Mas Oyama trained in both Shotokan and Goju Ryu and synthesized both systems.
Punches are forbidden in competitions as our kumite is FULL CONTACT and with NO PROTECTION except for a mouth piece and a groin guard. And we fight bare knuckle.
Other martial arts has some or full protection during combat including gloves.
But in a real fight, we can do whatever we want and apply the same techniques in strikes forbidden during kumite.
That's because you don't train in Kyokushin so you don't have a clue how our martial arts function. The fact our katas and kihon include head strikes.
Yes I train in Kyokushin. Kyokushin fighters do fight back and when they do, they will hit you, HARD! Osu!

No martial is superior. It is more the fighter or the practitioner.
A well skilled Kyokushin Karateka can defeat an unskilled traditional Okinawan Karateka or vice versa.
Kyokushin can be considered a sport but it is a deadly one. And it has proven effective in various MMA competitions.
I know the katas of both Shotokan and Goju-Ryu. Though I don't agree with your watered down comments on Kyokushin katas, I prefer Kyokushin katas because of some of it are of soft-flowing motion.
***** Come to think of it, the mentality of Karate is more a self-defense than a sport is one of the reasons why it had a hard time becoming an Olympic sport as opposed to Taekwondo and Judo.
The mentality of Karate being an art of self defense is what most Okinawans believed and definitely will not support such movement.
It is only recent that Karate is accepted in The Olympics.

No, you're not being picky. And I don't think that's necessary. First of all, the word Karate still means what it always meant. "Empty hand," meaning unarmed combat. Second, the Okinawans still pretty much train in Karate as they always have. It's the Japanese who adapted Karate for Kickboxing and sport combat. Shotokan and Kyokushin are examples, but they're still extremely effective in combat, especially Kyokushin.

I was thinking. Should we really call this the way of the "warrior"? Warriors make war, WARriors right? The way mentioned here is a way of inner discipline, fighting ourselves in a way. Forging ourselves anew and better. Learning to fight so we don't fight. Shouldn't that make us something other than a "warrior"? Something greater?

Well, my point was that the early Karate masters who developed the fighting art were part of the warrior class/upper class, and not peasants working in the fields as is so often the stereotype.

And as far as I'm aware its the traditional makiwara board... you can get one online. Or make your own...
You'll need a heavy piece of wood.. a large spring.. to give just enough flexibility so as not to damage the hands or feet. And some foam to cushion the impact..

The "r" is a rolling "r" then there are sounds like Tz or Ts. Who cares. Morio Hogaonna is the subject and the style is Goju. A lot of the comments on here serve almost or no purpose.

That's true, and I agree with your point, but if Karate was meant for warfare and nowadays its ways are taught slightly differently and for different purposes, shouldn't it have a different name altogether? Like Neo Karate or something of that sort, but I think I'm just being picky here.

MrOphachew It is one of the 4 major systems of Okinawan Karate along with Shotokan, Shito-Ryu and Wado-Ryu.
Goju-Ryu is also one of the widely practiced systems in Okinawa especially in Naha. Another widely practiced system in the island is Shorin-Ryu, one of the oldest styles of Karate.

Yes, but they became farmers and fisherman after they had already been part of the warrior or upper class, which is when Karate was being developed. Karate and Kobudo required long, intense hours of training and study which the upper class had time for, and the commoners had little time for martial arts training as they had to work just to make a living is all I was saying.

On their website you can watch a nice free video featuring how you can start building notable muscle really fast whilst eliminating body fat simultaneously. Chris and many other guys had great success because of this method. Hopefully it helps you as well...
Why do people deal with karate as if its some type of art of display rather than art of combat?....karste was for fighting in its original form not for ceremonial kata demonstrations and to look good....

Hello, have you considered "Musclegend" (just search Google)? There you will find a nice free video showing the way to develop notable muscle easily. It helped James to overcome his bodybuilding stagnation and then grow toned lean body mass without fat super fast. Perhaps it will help you too.

I'm portuguese and happen to speak a bit of spanish so i know "cock" is the only plausible translation for that. Now if 'cock' was a widely used word for english speakers, and somebody said your fingers were like cocks, when you know the translation is polla, you wouldn't like it either, would you? I admit i may have jumped the gun a little, but you should have thought about what you wrote as well. :)
Higaonna lies !!!!! he was student of Eichi Miayazato from Jundokan , higaonna left jundokan but when he went back Miyazato sensei sent him away. Ask Morio Higaonna who gave him his 8th and 9th dan... I will tell you ... a shorin ryu sensei named Higa yuchoku.
Sensei, Hiagonna and Karate are all Japanese words. I can assure you they can speak their own language.
Morio Higaonna was student to Eichi Miyazato Sensei, who taught him everything he knew. although practicing Goju style all his life, nowadays Higaona is 10th dan of Shorin style. Accordingly to all I was taught of goju-ryu and suparimpei. Higaona is flawed. the leg movements in the kata are wrong, he was not taught that by his master. how do I know this? My Sensei was colleage to Higaona. Higaona even taught in my country at a time (Oporto city Portugal) - McDojos, belt facturies, egos, over publicity trying to hide from the truth of betraying his master and trying to make a name for himself - it is a pity that youtube is filled with almost only his videos on goju-ryu searches. he knows not the true meaning of karate
a man may train a mistake 1000 times and will become the best at doing it, it will still be a mistake. besides a true karate legend doesn't need publicity. Shihan Hanshi Jaime Pereira is a true living legend

have you ever meet a student of Chojun Miyagi? because I have. Kiichi Nakamoto, was a student of Chojun Miyagi sensei, as well as student to Miyagi sensei's sucessor: Eichi Miyazato.
Myazato Sensei taught mr higaona, both Nakamoto Sensei and Hanshi Jaime Pereira, know this because they were there!
Mr higaona, as seen in the video though you must know the katas yourself, changes the kata that his master Miyazato - direct sucessor to Chojun Miyagi - taught. I know this because Jaime Pereira Sensei, was colleague to mr higaona. thus student to Miyazato Sensei.
Hanshi Jaime taught me Supa Rimpei. Hence I know the distinct diferences in what mr higaona does, did and what is the real kata.
Of the Shorin ryu part, I'll tell you the true story - Mr Higaona, though strong and comitted, has never received more than 6th dan by Miyazato Sensei, whom he betrayed and now says never studied under him. Man, Miyazato Sensei taught him everything he knows, and he tarnishes the memory of his master saying he never trained under him, that's cold!
Mr Higaona's goju-ryu 7th dan, was given by Ani'chi Miyagi, who appears in this video, but somehow it is said he only is 4th dan, weird...
His remaining Dan were given of Shorin ryu schools, because no Goju-ryu master would teach or graduate him, after what he did to Miyazato Sensei. it's a like a history teacher giving you a graduation in termo nuclear science. he knows nothing of shorin-ryu, yet he has the 10th dan. that is wrong!!
About Jaime Sensei - he is a world wide known figure, he gives seminares from India to Venezuela, he is a World Karate Federation 8th Dan, and 9th Dan by Okinawa. you ought to not say he is inferior to anyone, or anything about him. you've never meet him. his quality is way above yours who does not show a name nor a face while defending people you know little about.
you want to learn true goju-ryu karate, with the true ways. don't go on youtube and judge by appearence. Karate is more than kicks and punches, mr Higaona has no respect for who taught him, the rest of good you see, is he cleaning his image.
you want to learn come to europe, meet Sensei Jaime Pereira, he is in Lisbon Portugal.
Lastly, the Line of Goju-ryu follows as such - Founder: Chojun Miyagi - Sucessor: Eichi Miyazato, who taught both Mr Higaona and Hanshi Jaime Pereira and Hanshi Kiichi Nakamoto. after the passing of Sensei Miyazato, we changed organization and now have as head Kiichi Nakamoto, who was also student of Chojun Miyagi Sensei. And he is the head of Okinawakan.
Mr Higaona has many videos on youtube, but that does not mean he is either the best or even true, he just has a marketing machine made by his wife. you want to learn, search for real people, not images on the net
i was wondering. In the real art is there any emphasis on internal training, like training of the hara (dan tien) and learning to feel and use the subtle energies in and around the body? also, do these masters have any other work or are they full-time teachers?

Don't like this documentary. Most karate clubs aren't like this. If a newcomer looks at this they may get repelled by the hard training and strange breathing exercises and because of that never chose to take up karate. Or, they see this and expect karate to be this way and then go to a club and gets disappointed. It would have been much better if they had gone to a ordinary Shotokan club somewhere in Japan. At least that would have given the viewer a more accurate picture. I know they tried to show "real" karate in this documentary, but because most clubs are nothing like this they failed.
+Ultra TV This is what real karate is supposed to look like. If you're not training like this you're not a karate-ka. If they would be repelled by the hard training then karate isn't for them is it?
