Very good series. Unfortunaterly they don't make television like this anymore.
Proud to see the legend E P Vasudeva Gurukkal in this documentary!! 🙏🏻❤
Great documentary. I just wish they had it in HD or at least a better quality
PhillyPugilist this does not represent the actual India this documentary is quite old (around the 80's or 90's) at that time there was no hd I am even surprised of the quality.
According to mythology or( to indians it's history) kalaripayyatt is from adiyogi (Shiva) to agysata Muni (thekkan kalari) and parashuram ( vadakkan kalari ). It's all connected to spirituality(yoga).
Its yoga ji... Leading to samadhi
Great art , thanks for uploading 🙏
Kalaripayattu - ancient martial arts of Keralam ❤❤
I study Kalari. This is a great overview of the art.
Can you tell where are you studying in kerala? Which centre?
why do i get the feeling that if we made a tournament to the death(because there's no clearer victory) with the best representatives of each martial art,we still can't determine the "best" one?it all comes down to the individual really.
Then take an average skilled person of each martial art.
Loved
this show was great
Thank to video
Saw the guy on "Mind Body and Kick Ass Moves" and he declared the moves where Aikido moves and the instructor wasn't too happy about it.
+MrOphachew which episode was that?
MrOphachew Not sure what they'd mean here. As with all periods of time and every area of knowledge, there was probably cross-influence, but the basic body mechanics in Kalaripayattu striking are in some ways the polar opposite of East-Asian striking mechanics up until very recently. As for grappling, I haven't seen any demonstrations of KP grappling, but if it resembles the South Asian wrestling styles I've seen, then the closest relative I know of is Greco-Roman wrestling. The one take-down I saw in this video, precedes recent years when a British judoka "invented" it and introduced it to Western pop culture. Perhaps she invented it independently, I can see how that would be possible looking at the judo system, but yeah, she's not the first, and if it had been in aikido, she'd have had access to it.

Kalaripayattu Class👌🏽👌🏽🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳
Marma chikitsa madhavanasan is a siddha system
NAME OF THIS MARTIAL ART IS KUTHU VARISAI & SILAMBAM (ALSO KNOWN AS THEKKAN KALARI).
WHEN YOU ACTUALLY GIVE THE NAME KALARI, PEOPLE TEND TO THINK IT AS NORTHERN STYLE,
SO KINDLY SPECIFY PLEASE.
This video shows Madhava Gurukkal who was an exponent of both Southern and Northern styles and had many teachers. The second half shows Vasudevan Gurukkal who is the legendary Gurukkal of the Northern style of Kalaripayattu. Please stop complaining without the proper information.
@@mathwithnikhil The first half portion shows VELAPPAN ASAN OF KANYAKUMARI DISTRICT.
His 3 sons are into teaching Silambam, Adimurai and Malyutham still
You can search in Google "KUMARI CHENNAI MARTIAL ARTS". One of Velappan Asans sons named Sathish Asan is teaching in Chennai
@@furrowsiainbenamin7642 What about the second half? FYI Madahava Gurukkal's name comes up at 6:40 as well in the documentary. You can also check his wikipedia page "Simhalan Madhava Panicker".

The “historical” declarations in this video are silly, although not unprecedented for the early 1980s when this series was filmed. The deadly strike “arts” are similarly just silly.
It was budhi dharma who took martial arts from Indian any Chinese monk will tell you 😂😂😂😂 even the Indian Dance forms are martial arts just not used for fighting!

It's a misconception/myth that kungfu originated from kalaripayattu. And even if it did, kungfu has incorporated many other changes and has been changing and evolving for centuries, it's not similar anymore. Naanam keduthathe po myre.
Many Incorrect descriptions and facts. Kalari was practiced and originated by a small clan of high caste Nair warriors in North Kerala and Tulunadu, it was not a part of south India region as a whole.
It was a Vedic aryan system based on Ayurveda treatment and used mainly by the kingdoms of malabar north Kerala.
Dravidian South Indians had no role in Kalari or Ayurveda as they were aboriginal low castes and were not allowed to study Sanskrit or practice kalari. The documentary is misleading that it’s part of entire region, it’s for a small sect of warrior clan only.
Nowadasys all castes are learning kalari with poor skills and competence. The level is expertise far lower than the real gurukkals of malabar of 17th century.
Pfft, Wepner could squash any practitioner of this crap.
Even before a boxer could ready is arm a couple of wellplaced kicks would completely disable him. the show does not show the substance.

Lol, sheer tomfoolery. No decent boxer will ever lose to these hooligans.
Robert Miles This is, boxing, dude. Close the palms to fists, and the strike-arcs necessarily tighten up to the same form. I.e. Bas Rutten was known for knocking people out with palm strikes like in this style.
Evera Outta
lol this stuff is clearly all bullshit
Robert Miles I'm not sure what you're protesting about it, specifically. Can you articulate?
