A little tip that I'd forgotten to mention... If you want to save a few bob on wax you could always visit your local charity shop and buy candles there. You can then melt those down and follow this process to make your own candles. You save a few bob on wax and you help a chairty while you're at it. Thank you for joining me, we're off camping again next time🙌🍀
Thanks a million, I wanted to make it as easy as possible. There's no need to over complicate things in my experience. I hope you're enjoying the weekend... take her handy 👍
Great video! My dad bought me an original one of these back from Canada about 30 years ago. I quickly burnt down all the candles (3) that were supplied with it, only to find nowhere in Britain could I get a replacement. When I eventually found a replacement, I found this company were like printer manufacturers and all the money they made was in these sodding expensive candles. I did try and go down the mold route, but that turned into a disaster. In the end the thing went under the sink only to be completely forgotten about, until of course now. Cheers!
Well I really hope that you can give it a new lease of life. That's class that you've had it for so long and even better that it was a gift from your Dad 👍🍀
I enjoyed your video very much . If you'll accept one suggestion from a US citizen ( roots back to Scotland) , you might find it easier to set the wick length before you pour in the wax . Set the clothes pin to the correct position, remove the wick/ pin , pour in the wax , put in the wick/pin . That way you know there is no bend in the wick .Is that confusing enough?😅
You’re such a breath of fresh air. I subscribed ages ago and after every episode I still walk away smiling. God love yay. You’re a good man yourself. Isn’t that what they say. Not being Irish myself but a Aussie from down under. Can’t wait for more.👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
Brilliant - almost impossible to buy the right sized candles for these lanterns in Australia. Off to the Chemist to buy some vitamins for the container. Right way, wrong way and the Irish way - just love that attitude, Irish Way every time 😁🇦🇺👍
That's why I use the tea light UCO, cheaper and available everywhere. But for the long ones this Is a nice alternative. Like you said many lamps: the Black Betty oil lamp I made several of. I used a old cleaningmop and some iron wire for a perfect lamp.
I wouldn't have a clue but if you can't find any check your local charity shop. They might have normal candles that you can get cheap and melt down. It's a little tip I'd forgotten to mention
"no stress, no need for stress." Never a finer phrase. I'm saving this video for next spring, but thank you so much; it's definitely something I will do...including adding citronella oil once the wax is melted lol. For now, I'm preparing for hot tenting season. May I ask, where in Ireland do you film, the scenery is absolutely gorgeous. Another top video!
I just made a big batch of candles to see me through the winter. I'm going to give hot tenting a go myself this year for the first time. I need to find some spots for it though. I film all over Ireland, I try to go to new places each time but I have barely scratched the surface. The west and south west have the most beautiful landscapes in the whole of Ireland
Thanks for this. Is there any reason you didn’t use the tube cap to keep the wick perfectly centred? Just drill a small hole in the top of the cap and pass the wick through it.
Simplicity is generally better imo, an idea for using tealight candles in glass jars is to put some plaster of Paris in the bottom of the jar and push a tealight into the plaster while it sets, you get a stable candle holder that's sorta heatproof, really helpful for candle jars on lacquered tables and tent groundsheets lol somehow the plaster keeps the bottom of the jar getting too hot
Thanks for that, the UCO candles are a rip off. When it cooled down & you topped it up in the middel, was that the wick low gap? I'll try & do it the Irish way here in Northumberland.
"You can do it the right way, the wrong way, or the Irish way" 😊😊 An example of the wrong way is when the molten wax is too hot and it distorts the moulds and I now can't get the candles out . . . . .
@chrishole7972 😄 I've never had that happen. Sure, all you can do is laugh. If the mould is distorted, cut the mould to save the wax and try again, that's what I'd do anyway. Maybe allow the wax to cool a bit before pouring it in but I've never had an issue with pouring the was in straight away. Maybe those vitamin containers are not all created equal 🫣
I disagree with one of your statements: the right way, the wrong way and the irish way. I'd say the irish way: do it your best, and it'll be grand - that IS the right way! Nice video though - I think I'll be trying this one myself!
@RamblingOn it's frigging wild. Look into them. Uco sued coglans camping gear they sued dozens of etsy people who were making candel molds and selling them. I believe they even sent cease and desist letters to UA-camrs who showed cool hacks like yours to take down videos. They were real a holes several years back.

Love this!!!!!! We need more "How to" Rambling On videos. Simple, clear, encouraging. Well done Jason. Whats next?
EXACTLY …what he said
Cheers Alyn, whats next? I'm off camping 😄 I've no plans for other videos other than camping at the moment
A man of many talents Jason 🙌
Could not belive how easy this was, love it
The vitamin tube as a mold is brilliant! Thank you!
You can add a pinch of stearic acid to bee's wax or paraffin as well to harden the wax, in the same way that UCO manufactures their candles.
Thanks a mill for the tip 🙌 The beeswax is grand but the soy wax is messy stuff
A cup of tea is always good.No excuse required.
100% 👍🍀

Standard candles work fine cut in half. I use IKEA. Seems the best value.
I am loving the Irish way of doing things...thanks for the lessons Jason.

Going to try this for outside our caravan at night
Excellent job Jason.
Thats a great idea, I made a mold from cheap silicone sealant using the candle that came with the lantern, but definitely going to give that a go
hope your week is going ok 🙏
@@joeyjennings9548 it's all good, I hope you're the same 🙌

Thanks a mill 🙌
Fantastic mate. Even collecting that little bit of snipped wick impressed!
Brilliant Jason, geranium oil works well for keeping the dreaded cleggs away. Although I just put some on my clothes.
Nice, I'd try anything 😁
Brilliant video. Can't wait to start making my own.
Spot on Jason, thanks for that. I'll definitely be making them and trying tgem out for midge season next year 👍 Can't stand the little blighters! 🤨

Excellent stuff, Jason. I almost thought you were going to make a cup of tea when you were starting on the candle.
🤣 I had everything there for the tea but there was work to be done 😁
Thanks a million buddy
Thank you thank you for showing us this! I’m really loving this channel more and more! I’m a uco user myself!🤓

Not all heroes wear capes😂 Class job with the vitamin tube for the mold
@RossGregorymachines88 🤣 haha love it. Yeah I was looking for something handy to use and it turns out that it works really well, so happy days 😁
No, but he does have his underwear on the outside.
That was a great tutorial! Easy to follow ☺️☺️
Nice one sir 👍
Great video, thanks for the candle class and ideas to make lanterns from things around the house.
Spot on mate

@@RamblingOn Herrick Kimball has some nice tutorials about it in YT. I followed his advice. Works great.
@kayakcobber524 thanks a mill, I'll check him out now before I forget
Well done lad. Have had decent success with lemongrass oil in candles to repel flying insects.
Love it, thank you so much for your acquiescence to your viewers' request 🎉
No worries, I enjoyed putting the video together. Thanks a mill for watching 🙌
EXCELLENT JASON

Thanks Jason. That looks straightforward. Where do you get the bees wax in Dublin?

That’s the easiest way of making your own refills that I have seen.
check out the Uco Mini Candle Lantern with tea light 😊 much easier...
Thanks for that, the UCO candles are a rip off. When it cooled down & you topped it up in the middel, was that the wick low gap? I'll try & do it the Irish way here in Northumberland.
Wick low gap ... damn, wish I'd thought of that! 😂
🤣 that was a good one. Just for the craic I checked out their beeswax candles. For five candles it would have cost £27 which is crazy money
👍🇲🇾
