I laughed so hard when Sal winked. "They don't know yet."

@@HOTD108_ The moment is 30:33.
And 55:13 is the name reveal.
It felt like old Back Issues when Ben and Ethan didn't know anything about comics.
This story started on ABC Family, moved to The CW, and then switched lanes to Lifetime...
I don't know why this makes sense but it does.
That says a lot about Millar’s thought process for this imo.
Kudos to Sal for being able to bury the lede for the entirety of this episode. Seeing Ben & Ethan get so close to figuring it out and whiffing it was hilarious.

Welcome to how to catch a comic predator
I'm surprised they didn't clock the "Ben"-"May" "Richard"-"Mary" connection.
I think its because they are pretty normal names and Peter's parents names haven't been brought up often
They also mention that they don’t talk about Richard and Mary Parker often
Bailey Tollison but like...Ben and may...in a marvel book
Creed I mean they did make that connection early on but I think to make the leap in logic like “oh it’s the parkers, oh it’s aunt may, oh no this is a secret origin for the conception of Peter Parker.” Is a lot to ask
I forgot the title by the end and just didnt expect it when the shoe dropped
Man, watching Ben and Ethan get SO CLOSE to realizing who these characters are the ENTIRE episode made my night. You guys are fantastic.
They did it. They finally did it.
I’m so sorry.
Should be noted that “Trouble” was a euphemism for teenage pregnancies back then, so despite everything else, they didn’t bury the lede.
I didn't know that. Ironically, Millar said that he hoped the story would be helpful to girls going through a situation like that.

Another thing to note: May's life has serious parallells to MJ's. Viewed as promiscuous, abusive dad, shirks responsibilities for a long time until growing into being responsible... I've spent a decade and a half avoiding this book because the more I learn, the creepier it sounds with its implications for Peter and aunt May.
Not to mention his mom being drawn to deliberately invoke Gwen Stacy....
Mary Jane had a tough home life, so does this May Reily. May is made to look like MJ. Pete's easily manicured when either is put in peril- coincidence I THINK NOT
@chandllerburse737 Damn it, Freud!
@chandllerburse737well that’s generally understood to be not true whatsoever, the one who made is Sigmind Freud was basically just like “Hey I’m not weird! Everyone wants to bang their parents!”
At least MJ was fun and had a good character.
I'd heard it be suggested that Trouble takes place in the Ultimate Universe. Not confirmed but Bucky Barnes survives WWII and becomes an old man in both continuities.
With how horrible the Ultimate universe can be, I can 100% see this being the case.
Mark Millar also wrote the Ultimates, and Aunt May grew up in the 60's in the Ultimate Universe. Though Peter's father looks a great deal younger than uncle Ben and aunt may in that universe
@@TheWazzoGames yeah but he also does younger....
I actually wouldn't mind that as much, they do imply ben and may were like chill hippies for awhile
It can't be. If Peter was born in the 60s he would be in his 40s when Ultimate Spider-Man takes place.
I'm watching this directly after the Marville episode
You know I really think it really says a lot about Sal that not only did he read this comic, but spent money on it, and then went onto the internet where he admitted to such a thing for 87K fans, and then talk about this for over an hour. His is truly a sacrifice we could never understand. May God have mercy on his soul.

Someone needs to ask Mark Millar, if May gave birth to Peter at 17 why the heck is she 80 when he’s 15?? Is she really in her 40’s? Is she a closet alcoholic and looks 40 YEARS older?

^ If you remember or find it, please share. Jejeje
It was by Marvels in house French photographer
I think Linkara put it best saying that the Bucky Barnes cameo in the last issue was Marvel basically saying "WE'RE SORRY! IT'S NOT CANON!". Like they originally were going to make it canon to 616, but then in the last couple of issues realised what a mistake they were making, so quickly popped in this undeniable contradiction just so they could say it wasn't.
May and Ben’s love story could’ve been a very sweet idea for a comic if the people who did it weren’t so clueless about the genre they tried to tackle
They are Marvel’s Kents after all
May did tell peter how she and Ben got together in the proper universe.
angel7661 i meant a cute little miniseries, literally what this was supposed to be but good
The whole time I was just screaming "RICHARD AND MARY PARKER! BEN AND MAY PARKER!"
"Let Linkara do that for you" 😲😂
I can see the purpose of this story, if written well, aunt May being Peter's mother and always maintaining that distance whilst knowing that Peter is Spiderman could lead to a great story about secrets, but realistically it adds nothing to Spiderman because regardless of who his biological mother is aunt May and Ben are ultimately his parents.
I’m surprised that Ben and Ethan didn’t immediately recognize the names 😂
Don't forget that Ben and Ethan don't read books outside of GBU!
i mean they did recognize the names just didnt make the leap to its those may and ben

I give up I just wanted to nake a reference joke to the film nothing but trouble but they all sucked! So im writing this instead plus whom other than I even remwmbers tbat atrocity of a film
The reactions of the two homies on either side to the cover was amazing
This comic book sounds alot like a cross between Dirty Dancing and the American Pie movies. In other words old recycled teen movies in a comic book format. Nothing like those old Romance comics.
Somewhere out there Linkara is laughing at the guy's pain
The cover of the Trouble comic looks like it was trying to replicate those Olsen Twins girl books and movies that were very popular at the time but instead came off as creepy.
The look on Ben’s face when he heard Ben and May I thought oh man he figured it out to early! But the best was saved for last when both he and Ethan heard the truth, priceless!!
Remember that JMS' story where Peter met an old friend of his dad and learned that he was a real stand up guy, with strong morals?
Mark Millar clearly didn't.
Does Mark Miller actually read comics? Because I know he doesn't really read his own
this was released in 2003 this actually would be during the JMS run, and depending on when that specific issue was released, trouble may have been written before that issue they mentioned Richard or JMS Wrote that issue IN RESPONSE to trouble
I mean, he also forgot that aunt May is supposed to be a super old woman yet according to this, since she gave birth to Peter in her late teens, she should be in her early 40s.
Obviously, he didn't quite think this through.
Bucky Barnes' appearance, I think was the last minute decision. Because Bucky did survive WW2 and aged...in Ultimate Universe. I really think Millar just chickened out in the end.
So this is the unofficial retcon of Ultimate Spider-Man. That's just horrible.
I looked at my phone, saw this week's Back Issues thumbnail, and out loud in the middle of my workplace said, "Ooooh, nooooooooo..."
55:16 the way their faces just drop right here is so fucking hilarious

Also, I think Peter was named after the manager of the resort (The Dean). I think that's pretty interesting, and would have made for a decent character development, but it just barely gets alluded to in a single panel that states The Dean and his wife helped the girls out with the pregnancy.

And let's not forget "Peter wants to bang his mooooom..." --- that was amazing
At first, I was like why are they doing Trouble? But as the video went on it dawned on me: Ben and Ethan don't know the "twist." Well sirs, at first you have my curiosity, now you have my attention.
P.S. Good job Sal on that humdrum way to reveal the twist. Really let me feel the pointlessness of that revelation.
I love the wink. Expert trolling

I have to assume that since they talk about Bucky Barnes being a war photographer, that trouble was intended to be set in the Ultimate Universe. Millar’s already tangential connection to that universe (and setting up Bucky as a war photographer in The Ultimates) makes it even more likely. The timelines would match up better too, since as Ethan pointed out, Aunt May in the regular universe was already old in the 60’s.
Oh boy, when the covers are revealed.
