Wouldn’t an FAE be a lot bigger? That one looked like a two-stage charge, like it detonated in mid-air to fire a secondary projectile into the house, which then blew up on its own.

Nowadays it's cool to 'hate' things that 'some' hate. Is Hulk perfect? No, but it was good, even the CGI. People hate this movie because it wasn't what they expected, but at least it is not a cookie cutter story.

Wow... I'm surprised he missed with the "Puny human" moment meant. Yes, in the desert, there was still a lot of Bruce holding him back. Bruce is usually always holding him back. There are few times we honestly get Savage Hulk. There was a point where he always goes to the desert (his birthplace) to calm down. Bruce was more in control there. They inadvertently saved themselves by having him there. Once Hulk moved away from there and into San Fran? Bruce was slipping. Saving that pilot was the last of Bruce. Every time he spared them, it brought more trouble. The rage was building. Talk about artistic choices. Bruce was simply shaving, showing that threat of Hulk happening at almost any time, and couldn't see himself anymore. As he tried to clear his "mirror"(how he sees himself) all that was there was the Hulk. The ease in his mental defenses (as "Bruce" was passing out from low oxygen), allowed Hulk to break through. That barrier was gone. Not only did he snatch Bruce into the "darkness" (depths of their mind, MCU Banner alluded to this in Ragnarok), he literally pulled himself into the light doing so. They were very lucky to have Betty there to snap Bruce back to the surface, because, at that point, we were about to get full on Savage Hulk. That's what Bruce really meant about her finding him. Up to then, they made it a point of showing Talbot as the only casualty. That number was about to DRASTICALLY change.

So basically Bruce Banner, as the lead alter in his DID system, was switching with Hulk after pushing him down for so long.
YES. I unapologetically love this version of the Hulk. There's so many great tortured & psychologically interesting stories that could be explored within the MCU with Hulk, and this movie was the first to really go there full tilt. Gotta respect it for that.

I actually think that because Hulk was drenched in water, him shrinking back to Bruce gave less surface area for the water to stay on, which is why he's forming a puddle as he shrinks

I always thought it was sweat. When you're angry your body temperature goes up so when he calms down, he's also sweating it out. At least that's what my kid brain was thinking lol

Like a squeegee effect. !D But if you look closely, he's steaming as he reduces, and when he changes back after the dogfight at the lake, he's drenched in sweat. Betty observes later that he and his father absorb ambient energy so he probably 'vents' that energy through perspiration. I thought that was a neat touch.

I remember an interview with Ang Lee where he said something like he didn't know how to make a comic book movie, but he did know how to make a Greek Tragedy. Seen through that light, this movie totally makes sense: generational conflict, inescapable dooms, no "Happy" endings.
There's really only one thing I don't like in this movie: David Banner doesn't bother to comb his own hair, but he keeps his poodle trimmed into that ridiculous style? People realize poodles aren't like that naturally, right? Really, the hulked-out dogs looked sort of sill in general, but I consider the limitations of the tech at the time.
Is it me, or does Josh Lucas have the world's worst case of crazy eye?
He's a scientist... maybe he genetically engineered it to only grow poodle cuts.

Heh. In Swedish, "getting to the poodle's core" is an expression meaning getting rid of the fluff to see the true shape of something.
I wonder if they did it so that the audience understands that it's poodles?
I took it to be someone else' dogs, like he just picked up dogs off the street to run his experiments on, and these were just the most recent, since they tend to die after transforming.
@@xsanguine8 I thought about that, but they followed him around and obeyed him like he was their master, which to me implied some sort of a longer term relationship than just the latest in a string of experimental subjects.
Ang Lee’s “Hulk” is my favorite stand-alone comic book movie, potentially my favorite comic book movie in general. And I perceive it as a prequel to “The Incredible Hulk” just saying.
I think legally Marvel Studios can't perceive it in that way, but The Incredible Hulk basically is a sequel. The end of Hulk sees Banner in South America, and The Incredible Hulk begins with him in...South America.
I think personally I prefer Watchmen, but I love this version of Hulk way more than The Incredible Hulk

I remember being soooo confuced when I learned people didn't like this movie. I think it was the first movie I saw multiple times in theaters. I also never understood people not thinking he looked like he was there, he totally does, he looks so huge and weird but because the editing is also weird you kinda just buy it. Absolutely dig it.
Its look amazing especially for being made in 1999 and it does hold up o agree with you when i found out people hated this movie i was like why its not even cringey unlike some other old super hero movies

All I’ve heard is “it’s bad” but never why it’s bad. So until someone says why I’m with you. This movie is pretty good.
@@CasperVonGhoul Most points boil down to: The comic book edits dont work more than they work ... there are some neat scenes but more often its really pointless nad is only there to remind you "hey I am a comic book movie". The movie is more of a social/character drama which most people did not really want from a hulk movie (i.e. the Hulk actually has very little screen time). The female leads acting is ... kind of not there ... she has the same expressionless face for almost the entire movie and only deviates from "plank" mode in very few scenes. The first half of the movie can be kind of boring and the first threat that appears (the dogs) are somewhat stupid in design. And personally I think the Hulk looks like a big baby ... which might be intentional in a innocent child kind of way but I still think his design just looks strange. The last one is obviously subjective.

I like this hulk the best. He grows as he gets angry. I never thought the effects looked terrible like everyone said. It was one of the first marvel movies I've seen and i have watched it many times.

It's also a reference to panels in the comics where the narrator would wonder if Hulk was flying, but he was really just jumping miles at a time.

One of the biggest things they got right is he's huge, and he gets bigger, stronger and beefier the madder he gets like in the comics, his size changes quite a bit and we've never seen any of that in the MCU hulk

The fight with the tanks and choppers is still my favorite on screen representation of The Hulk. Lee's mo capping Hulk as a tantrum-throwing toddler with insane strength is terrifying.
Ang Lee got that part of the hulk - the limitless possibilities of his power.

It's a good movie and not "bad" as many fan say. Good Cgi, good action scenes and good story. Even though he gets so big which is a little bit too much for my liking, and maybe he is not the strongest Hulk out there, he definitely has the potential and it's still one of my favorite Hulks.
I've heard it said that Bruce Banner has Dissociative Identity Disorder and the various hulks (Green, Grey, Kluh (Hulk's hulk, it's weird I know) etc..) are his alters, who were given their own forms by the gamma, and this movie lends itself well to that idea. DID is caused by repeated childhood trauma because the brain sometimes puts up barriers to lock away traumatic memories, but the personality isn't fully integrated, and those barriers stop it from doing so, and so the parts develop into alters in order to cope with the trauma. This also results in not remembering trauma or only one alter remembering the trauma.
Hulk, to me, is a little (the common name for a child alter) and a trauma holder, which isnt a good combo for obvious reasons. He has those traumatic memories, but his childish brain can't process them, so he lashes out. And those scenes where hulk becomes more like Bruce is likely them being co conscious, meaning that, while one alter is in control, another alter is also there taking some control (imagine you're driving a car and the person in the passenger seat also has a hand on the wheel)
Theres more, but this comment is already long enough as it is, I strongly encourage you to learn more about DID, as it's a fascinating subject and not nearly enough people know about it

And if you think about it. Grey Hulk (Mr. Fix It) COULD represent the adolescent side of Bruce. Unlike regular Hulk who lashes out similar to a temper tantrum. Grey Hulk has his mind in tact and uses his intelligence on being sarcastic, dickish, and most importantly on women.
Similar to a teenager, this Hulk is already on the road of "maturity" and doesn't need anger to power him, but instead uses it to obtain power, wealth, weapons, and sex. Which is something most teenagers strive for.

If you haven't read The Immortal Hulk (currently being published), you should. It takes the character back to his horror roots but also explores the character through philosophical and psychological lenses.
So then what is the hulk's hulk kluh (yes hulk spelled backwards) Green=child grey=teen Banner=adult so would that make kluh=elder?
I want more Marvel movies to have this kinda tone and style. Also I agree that this has the best score in any Marvel movie. Seriously underrated movie.

The problem is that movies like this don't make enough money, nor do they get love from the audience. As proven by this movie. This movie is simply uncomfortable to watch if you're expecting another capeflick. It's too depressing and too dark for a regular viewer. Sure, someone will probably point out how The Dark Knight made one billion in spite of being dark. And while it's true, and while the movie is dark, it's not depressing, or slow. It still retains some level of popcorn entertainment, like humor, sense of triumph, and fast pace. 2003s Hulk is an oddity in its kind of movies. I doubt MCU would ever have the guts to do anything close to this.

@10:40 On rewatch, I think a more correct interpretation of this moment would be to say that the lichen subconsciously reminds him of his mother. In the beginning of the film, we get to see her gardening desert plants as baby Bruce is looking from inside the window. So, the reason he continues to be interested in lichen, even as the hulk, is that the hulk is representational of his toddler-age trauma, which the lichen/gardening precedes. The childlike wonder is always there, connected to whatever remnant of a memory he may have for his mother.
At least, that is how I interpreted those moments. There’s also a lot of imagery of rapid cellular generation, so maybe the fact that lichen grow slowly yet surely is another factor.

@SpiritusC the MCU is actually a lot more comic accurate, look at the hulk v iron man fight in Age of Ultron, Tony just keeps making hulk angrier and angrier and thus stronger and stronger, and it isn't until hulk stops and sees what he'd done and starts to calm down that Tony's able to knock him out.

@SpiritusC it's not any problems with editing a big Hulk, it's about how angry he is at any given point in time. The only time when he grows bigger than usual is during extreme traumatic sessions, A.K.A Planet Hulk story.
Of course, Planet Hulk also has Hulk at his most incredibly, unbelievably overpowered, when he manages to survive being in a planet's mantle and literally pulls entire continental plates back together, thanks to the sheer rage he was feeling.
13:06, Among my favorite parts of the film. 4:49, Bruce's repressed memories and almost refusal to process these emotions make him less able to truly control the Hulk, only keep him at bay for a time. 11:26, 4:37, and with each transformation, the Hulk becomes bigger and stronger, as all that bottled up trauma boils to the surface, gaining a bigger and stronger hold over Bruce's life. 6:13, Without coming to terms with all that trauma, Bruce would have very little hope of controlling it. But when finally confronting his father, Bruce and Hulk truly becoming one here. Both his Hulk voice and puny human voice roaring in discordant unison at his father's selfishness and sociopathy. Killing his mother in front of him. Depriving him of a normal life. Plaguing his life with nightmares and repressed memories. And now.....because of his father....he's been turned into a monster. His being David's son made Ross automatically target him even before he was big and green. Now he's going to have to spend his life running, waiting for the military to hunt him down.
But once all that rage is let out, Bruce's last memory of his father is a loving and pleasant one. Danny Elfman's score turns from epic to sorrowful and serene. 11:16, despite his rage, the core of Bruce is one that appreciates and values life, beneath the rage and trauma that the emotionally and mentally repressed Hulk carries. 4:09, That humanity is what separates him from David despite the fact that they carry the same rage.
Most underrated comment on UA-cam. Glad I wasn't the only one to pick this up in the movie. The movie was working off a topic in psychology I thought they only discovered recently.
I always appreciated the fact that he did have a few good memories of his father. Abusive parents are rarely one dimensional.
This movie will always have a special place in my heart. I enjoy it more than the 2008 film for sure and I haven't enjoyed hulk action on screen more since this film. It was a perfect precursor for the 2005 game which made it that more fun to play cause you felt like you were playing the hulk from this movie. I'm glad you posted this cause it really reminded me of how much I love the hulk and why he is still my favorite marvel character!

Could you do "Rango" sometime? It's a great movie. Johnny Depp doesn't usually watch his own movies but said that he enjoyed this one and ofter watches it with his kids. It overall deserves some more attention.
It’s the best movie I’ve ever seen.
This is still my favorite Hulk movie. It was so atmospheric and brooding. Made me really think about the trauma, rather than just enjoy the smashing. I still thought about it years after watching it from time to time.

This is my favorite version of Hulk, warts and all. I watched it expecting to hate it, but got sucked in by the dynamic storytelling. Since then this has been the gold standard of comic book movies for me. Never liked any of the later movies, in part because they were such clear departures from this.
Stan Lee and Lou Ferrigno appear in Edward Norton’s Incredible Hulk too. They also had Robert Downey J 👀
The owner of the pizza joint was played by Paul Soles, who voiced a lot of Marvel characters in cartoons in the 60's and 70's, including the Hulk.

I saw this movie as a kid, maybe 13 or 14, and haven't seen it since. As a kid tho, I absolutely loved this movie
And I LOVED the dog fight. It blew young me away. I still watch it on UA-cam from time to time
I remember this in theatres too. I was a kid around 13 years old as well and it was my first time going to a drive-in theatre. The funny thing is I only really remember the dog fight scene of this movie.
This movie traumatized me as a kid. Some scenes I just hated to look at.
I remember seeing it for the first time when I was around 7 and I loved it.
My only issue with the movie is the ending credits music which is "Set Me Free" by Velvet Revolver. While in theory it works for Hulk. The overall tone, subject matter, and themes completely contrast with a song that's more appropriate for a more epic and action packed story. Should've used it for... idk Deadman or something?
I forgot how much I liked this movie. The actors were all perfect in there roles. The comic panel shots were a great touch. Very undervalued movie!
I remember loving this movie as a child in 03, then as I grew up and heard more and more criticisms I guess my memory of it just turned into a dumpster fire. After having grown up and having dealt with my own traumas, this video has turned that memory for me a little bit. Definitely giving it an objective rewatch.

Seeing all these scenes shows that this is a comic accurate movie in the way it is shot, filmed and edited. It really gives off the comic panel feel.

I wished you went in more on how amazing the first transformation is, especially that closeup of Bruce's leg as hes transforming shows not only the muscles growing but his tendons as well flexing as well all the popping noises you hear is actually the sound of his muscles and tendons stretching and expanding as Bruce rapidly gains muscle mass
Side note: we've all done weights and obviously you're muscles get bigger the heavier the weights you do, however obviously you feel extremely sore afterwards and it can be extremely uncomfortable and painful due to the fact you've damaged your own muscles so that when they grow back they grow back bigger and stronger, now imagine that pain multiplied to the amount of workouts needed to get to Hulk size in just a FEW SECONDS. Bruce is going through excruciating pain

i know that i'm rather late to the party here, but something i noticed watching this the other day is what could be a connection to bruce and shaving, keeping himself clean-cut. we first see him shaving at the beginning of the movie, where there's just a glimmer of the hulk-green eye while bruce is just vibing; the second shave is immediately followed by talbot's assault and an attempt to rile him up; and the third is as hulk is falling to the water, where bruce comes face-to-face with hulk within his own mind. every instance of bruce trying to maintain his mild-mannered appearance is in some way associated with the hulk or a source of his rage.
at the end of the movie, in south america, bruce is bearded. he's accepted the hulk as a part of himself and even takes it lightly: he smiles when he threatens the military man with his rage.
maybe i read too much into it, but just some things i noticed when i watched.

I find these early attempts at adapting superheroes to the big screen really interesting. It's fun to go back now and watch the first Burton batman film, and notice that it's less a superhero movie and more of a classic Burton film about a broken person with issues, his Bruce Wayne having more in common with Edward Scissorhands than a badass playboy.

This movie is seriously underrated, and I honestly have a hard time agreeing with just why people seem to hate it so much. It's like they didn't expect a movie about an immensely tragic character having drama or something.
Also, the music and editing are INSANELY GOOD!
EDIT: I will admit, this is a personal preference, but I loved the build-up and the characterizations. If this was nothing but action, it would've become boring, and people would've complained about more things.

In particular, I'd genuinely love to see a winning for Reloaded and Revolutions. "Why The Matrix Is Great" is a thoroughly covered topic. Far fewer are willing to give the sequels a fair shot and see their good points along with the bad. (In particular, I genuinely think Reloaded is underrated, although Revolutions definitely has its problems.)
This is still my favorite version of the Hulk because he's the only Hulk that actually feels like he's infinitely strong.

Gotta say, I love the scene where Betty takes Bruce to his old house to help jumpstart his memories. The tension is fantastic, and the score at that moment is haunting.
You're right that's a good scene. His trauma was so severe. It's amazing how many idiots don't appreciate the nuances in this film. Banner was an emotionally repressed man because of his bad childhood, it makes sense why the hulk is so angry and powerful. All that rage and repressed emotions just explodes as the hulk.

A note regarding the lichen obsession - it's first set up during flashbacks as something peaceful from his childhood that reminds him of home, and more specifically his mother. So as an adult, Bruce gravitates to it without remembering why (because of his suppressed memories), and the Hulk (Bruce's angry inner child) is calmed by it.
Btw, my personal head-canon is that the gamma bomb at the end of the movie stabilized the Hulk, and that Mark Ruffalo's Banner is a continuation of this movie instead of the 2008 movie.

I've always loved this film, great characters, smart take on Hulk and emotional trauma, uniquely styled and gives a lot of time and space for the actors to tell the story rather than action. It's not perfect, but I'll take an imperfect interesting film over a buttoned up predictable one every single day of the week.
Immediately immersed with the score along with you, that opening holds a lot of nostalgia that I hadn't noticed before. Kudos. THE breakout Super-film, paving the way for Iron Man and everything beyond... Easily waylayed and it's a massive shame.

I honestly really wished this was the hulk we got in the MCU, while I love the MCU Banner, I honestly felt this version of the *Hulk* is the better Hulk.
Outside of that, I loved this movie in all honesty and was confused why the Hulk was so different in the incredible Hulk, as I was much younger and thought that the Incredible Hulk was a sequel to this movie.
What bothers me about the MCU Hulk is, where is he supposed to go from here? They've so thoroughly tamed Hulk at this point that it seems hard to imagine him being in a compelling story again. Especially when they kind of blew their big chance to do so, by foregoing the option to ever do a real adaptation of Planet Hulk / World War Hulk. Like, as delightful as Mark Ruffalo's performances have been in the abstract, I *miss* having a Hulk that's legitimately scary.
@@jasonblalock4429 I think Marvel just couldn't do it, and not that they didn't want to do it. Their hand was forced by not having the film rights to Hulk, hence resorting to making him ride piggyback in the Avengers films and Ragnarok to further his plot. Who knows what they'll be able to do once they get the rights back from Universal.
There is a fan thought on TV Tropes that Hulk in this movie, the one in Incredible Hulk and Avengers *are* in a way the same guy at different stages of his life (tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Fridge/TheAvengers2012):
"The Hulk is played by Mark Ruffalo, who looks more like the Hulk than the previous Bruce Banner because he's always a little bit angry, always a little bit Hulk. @@jasonblalock4429 I think the Hulk we saw in Endgame was the end of his journey, I'm not sure if the Hulk is going to have any more onscreen appearances now that they've resolved his character. So if you like, this was the "happy ending" for the character.

I absolutely loved the way this film was shot. I love the transitions, the cut aways. I wish more movies were shot like this. I don't think I've seen a movie do the shot reverse shot quite like this.

You know, for the flak this movie gets, I do like that there's a lot of stylish elements that really embrace being a Comic movie.
This is so my favorite Hulk movie. It was so atmospheric and brooding. Made me really think about the trauma, rather than just enjoy the smashing. I still thought about it years after watching it from time to time.
Great cast, great preformances.
Of the two main Hulk films, I also liked this one more. I think the script was a little more tight in Incredible, but the casting in this one was perfect. And the tank scene is still one of my fave Hulk action moments ever.
...although how could you not win the chameleon on turning green on Bruce's hat at the very end when he said his iconic line :o

I'm not attacking you, but Jojo Rabbit is (in my opinion) both beautiful and hilarious. I know his humour is not quite for everyone.

I always loved this movie even as a kid. Sure a lot of stuff went over my head but as time went on and I gained more experience I understood this movie more. I personally think this version of the hulk is better than the mcu hulk because this hulk is based on the actual emotion of rage and anger. The mcu is more comedic and light hearted and that clashes with what the hulk stands for. Childhood trauma could lead to anger issues later in your adult life and in this case literally transforms you into a monster. And when both Bruce and Hulk told his father to take it all was breathtakingly beautiful. All of the anger and hurt unleashed all at once overloaded his father. I respect Ang lee for making this movie his own, much like how Sam raimi did for spiderman

I just noticed the detailed parallel between Bruce's first transformation and being born.
It start's triggering in his lab, where he feels at home, he properly starts changing in the corridor which actually grows too narrow for him and then finishes with Hulk bursting through the roof and getting his first taste of real fresh air.
