I agree. I had an AHH HAAAA moment this week. This video confirms it, as do many others. I'm trying to memorize positions, escapes, submissions... but that didn't work. Then some seasoned blue belt said "be heavy, so heavy I can't move. Place your hand here, so I can't move. Put your knee there, so I can't move. Remove a post and raise my hips and I'll fall" fuuuccckkk me, ahh haaaa. Lol. Same thing the black belt said, but I just never really heard him.
Love Chewy, he's a great teacher...what I took away is I'm setting up to turn their body away from me at my discretion.. and the body follows the head, so it starts with the cross face
Yes! I spent longer than I'm willing to admit thinking that I could submit people from inside their guard... 😔 I think a basic overview of each of the positions should be the first thing a new student should learn.
This is helpful. I’m new to bjj and I know what side control is but I don’t really know what the goal is in each position. The classes usually move pretty fast.
Chew, your video was like having a class on the old days. These are great details that I use to have conversations about with my old school colleagues back in time in Brazil. Some of them usually are not shared, even in seminars. You just revealed the golden tips that works for skinny and big guys. Congrats!
Chewie, the gentleman you're rolling with at 2:04 reminds me SO much of one of my training buddies. I'm a 45-year-old 4-stripe white belt (been training for 2 years now); this buddy of mine is 24 and has been training for 7 months, and seems to be a bit of a prodigy, just because his hips naturally move like the guy you're rolling with. In fact, he's giving some of our newer blue belts FITS because his hip mobility is just spectacular. I looked up this video specifically to figure out how to tighten up my hip control. Thank you SO much for these concepts, and keep up the great work!
Hey Chewy, as a new white belt you are by far the best guy out there. Love your content, love your podcast - keep it coming man. Big love from Sydney, Australia
chew, i finally pulled the trigger and joined a gym. last night, i had trouble keeping side control and after watching 3 other videos/channels, yours is the only one that stuck. your videos are simple yet extremely thorough. you teach concepts which makes it easier for a new guy like me instead of intricate techniques that i get lost halfway on. you don't drawl on and you always manage to keep my attention even on the 15 minute videos. thanks!
100% good stuff. What's funny is you can see as a Wrestler the good pinning qualities you have, and understanding the body in the movement of the body super good bud! Have to say by the way love you brother, and happy Thanksgiving!
Amazing video , your just amazing teacher .. thank you sincerely for your precious time .. I'm a beginner in Bjj and used to be a pro rugby player .. so as you said me being in a different discipline i should keep my ego out and just learn . I'm doing my homework now and trying to catch up with my class .. thank you again for your amazing explanation.
I like shoulder of justice idea. I'm used to knee to elbow to control the head area once the arm is cleared so that would be a nice addition. Thanks as always CHEW!
3 months in, and just the video i was looking for! As a skinny tall dude, i have problems with this. Gonna try this out on monday! As always awsome videos. BTW: that belt on Uke looks awfull new :-)
I enjoy being in side control where I can use my weight. I'm 250, at 5'10", and 45. I'm a rising blue belt (4th stripe) and jiu-jitsu has done wonders for my PTSD. Thank you for your teachings and sharing
Hey Chew I appreciate this video! Hopefully you answer old comments on old viedoes...but what do you do when your in side control but the opponnet is on his side facing away from you? Do you try to hop to the other side and flaten him out?
Should you do all of these (i.e. block the hip, block the shoulder and block the head) or will any one do? At around 2:48, when Chewie has all his weight and attention around Chad's shoulder and chest, he isn't doing anything to block Chad's hip from turning towards him. Is that unnecessary in that case? If not, how do you block your opponent's hip when you are trying to be tight and heavy around their chest/shoulder?
Lol I'm usually able to get out of side control and hold side control pretty easily against alot of opponents in my city, except for the black belts... My black belt instructor alone, I feel like his side mount is impossible to escape no matter what I do, and then I feel like I can never hold him in Side Control. No lie, everytime I go up against a Black Belt (Unless they're really small) I feel like I will never get to their level. 🤣 It's so weird to me, it's like that frkn belt is magic.
you probably already have a video about this but ive noticed with white belts not all but most ether right before a roll or right after they make comment about getting beat or going to get beat and i try to explain to them its not about that and once i figured that out myself i improved alot i dont know if you have a video on that or not but would be something good to talk about.
Hi Chew, Could you do video about back control? Many times I have one hook in and seatbelt or two hooks in I slip over opponent's head. It seems like I m to high and I do not feel like im having any control. It is really frustrating cuze it is one of the most dominating position but maan I prefer to stay in side control than take someone's back. Greetings from Poland !
Yeah well, it gives our opponent a good grip, it allows him to choke us, we can be lifted by it So why is wearing it an advangtage for myself? In reality i wear Tshirt 90% of the time - so doesnt that mean np gi is much more realistic and makes life more difficult for my opponent?
Yes! This is great. So I was watching this with a friend. She does not do bjj but she wanted to see what I was always talking about. Here is what happened... Me:Cool this will help Friend:ya umm id get it... Me:-_- Friend:so can't they turn the other way like not towards you? Me: .......-_-NO. Friend:why not Me:bc than you can take the back and sub them Friend:??? Me:srsly -_- ok so I hold parner from behind and squeeze there neck until they tap on me understand nub... Friend:ohhhhh but where is the punching Me:OMG RU JOKING. Ok NVM bye *walks away annoyed* Friend:I still don't get it... 😂🤣
Thank you dan bilzerian
yes CONCEPTS ! videos with concepts instead of positions and maneuvers are so helpful and more easily translated into training, thanks mate
You're welcome brother!
Chewjitsu, this video is way far awesome; please keep posting this kind of stuff.

As a beginner I find videos explaining the fundamental concepts of the positions more beneficial than exact steps, nice vid.

this guy is a beast. great explanation. never heard it referred to as "shoulder of justice" lol. love this channel
Thanks!
Good video, I'm a Brazilian purple belt and this video helped me to remember some details about this position. Congratulations for your job. OSS

Since first watching this, this has been so valuable. I always end up getting my partner in side control, and this helps me control them more.
Small details explained simply mean everything
I’m a newer blue belt and I find the concepts of these positions so so helpful. Thanks chewy!
Sir you're one of the finest coaches!
Respect

Love this "Concept" approach. Makes it so much easier to retain.

The hip, the neck, and the shoulder have disliked the video
3 months in, and just the video i was looking for! As a skinny tall dude, i have problems with this. Gonna try this out on monday!
As always awsome videos.
BTW: that belt on Uke looks awfull new :-)
Good luck!
The belt is new on him. But it's been through some battles! ;)
Love your videos thanks

4:18 is my fave against the squirmy guys who are difficult to hold down have cardio for days

I struggle with staying glued to my opponent in SC. They always manage to create separation

Ty
TIL it's more effective/restrictive to pin them onto your own wedge than to the mat.
What if the guy is very flexible and keeps bringing the legs up to the head whether from regular side control or Nessa gatomi?
some advice pls, to escape reverse side control?
probably a dumb question but im old but how or where do i go to ask those questions that your reading off your phone?
I think you just did it where it's done. :)
UA-cam, Instagram or email off my contact form on www.Chewjitsu.net . I typically address the email questions more readily.
Chewjitsu thank you

Jesus saves. Love you guys.
Thank god for Chewjitsu
hey chewi what do you think about academies that are giving a green belt before the blue
Eh, it's not my thing. I actually got a green belt in my first gym. I don't do it myself. But it's not bad or unheard of.
thanx chew

Sure can. I'll add it to the list. Thanks for the question brother.
Why do my hands wanna be as I’m passing the guard
💯

That like to dislike ratio 👍🏻
The 6 people who disliked this video were white belts who quit after six months of training.
Time and time again you show us how the Gi is our enemies best friend - why do BJJ with a gi at all?
Haha. It's not the enemy if you know how to use it. Why would you be completely against the gi?
Yeah well, it gives our opponent a good grip, it allows him to choke us, we can be lifted by it So why is wearing it an advangtage for myself? In reality i wear Tshirt 90% of the time - so doesnt that mean np gi is much more realistic and makes life more difficult for my opponent?

Thanks Chew...3 yrs later lol.
I thought this was a Crowder video.
Haha on a SIDE note
