Au XXe siècle, le rôle que doit jouer le piano dans la musique a été un sujet de préoccupation pour beaucoup de compositeurs. La manière dont cet instrument avait été utilisé par les grands compositeurs romantiques a été matière à reflexion et on a cherché à réévaluer ses possibilités.
Claude Debussy a été le premier artiste à chercher à renouveler l’écriture pianistique. Ses ‘Préludes' et ‘Images’ sont, par exemple, remplis d’effets d’une beauté frappante : il y fit un usage très subtil de la pédale pour noyer les sonorités des accords et exploita le phénomène des résonances sympathiques selon lequel les vibrations d’un accord tenu se combinent avec d’autres notes pour former des sonorités inhabituelles. Il traita aussi les accords comme des sonorités en elles-mêmes plutôt que comme des éléments d’un ensemble à vocation harmonique.
Les innovations introduites par Debussy conduisirent d’autre compositeurs à tenter de nouvelle expériences. Durand, l’éditeur de musique, fit un jour remarquer que, lorsque Debussy jouait, on oubliait que le piano avait des marteaux..
Claudio Arrau peint une fresque épique de la musique de Debussy. Le piano devient une toile de maitre qu’il paint avec une grande minutie. Chaque mélodie, chaque accord, chaque note exprimée par le pianiste est un univers féérique qui se déploie, nous encercle et nous pénètre. À 80 ans passés, Arrau est ici au sommet de son art, l’art du toucher pianistique, l’art de faire oublier les marteaux..
Cette gravité, cette lenteur qui, au-delà des images fugitives, semblent rechercher une communication avec ce qu'il y a de plus mystérieux, de plus profond, de plus obscur dans l'univers debussyste, tout cela impose un nouvel angle d'écoute. On ne résiste pas à cette vision crépusculaire.

Near 1930, Claudio Arrau initiated his career as a piano soloist playing in Berlin, in 12 functions, the complete keyboard works of JS Bach. This tour de force opened a series of triumphal playing all over the world music by Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, Schubert and Schumann. He was also capable to play with singular success music by Debussy, almost his contemporary. His Debussy was very far from Beethoven, more impressionistic, complex and technically demanding, but always beautiful, delicate, iridescent. Thanks Classical Music for this reference recording.

@@RenatoPernett Of course, if you include the period in Chile as a child prodigy and his formal education time under Martin Krause. Arrau himself decided to formalize his career as a solo pianist by playing this integral Bach keyboard series of 12 concerts in Berlin. I admit that my definition of "formalizing the start of his career as a solo pianist" is perfectly arbitrary and perhaps erroneous. This does not detract from the the symbolic value of the Berlin concerts, I believe.
@@jorgeurzuaurzua4011 Arrau's recordings are all excellent, of course. But his late Debussy recordings are to me to the best ever, magical, in the way that Alicia de Larrocha's versions of Albeniz are unique. A combination of masterful technique, the great experience of life and repertoire, and the blending of wisdom and spontaneity, in beautifully recorded sound.
One could say the same things about Michelangeli's legendary recordings of Debussy, except that Michelangeli's versions feel static, cool, carved in marble, perfected; whereas Arrau's versions have all the same qualities, but are warm and alive, with the possibility of change, and to me that sets them above.
Philips had really mastered the art of recording piano sound at this time - and the playing is just gorgeous!
His recordings of Debussy are IMHO among the greatest piano recordings of all time.

Arrau's interpretations of Debussy are beautiful. I don't know of a pianist who communicates more through his interpretation than Arrau. His technical mastery is always in the service of the beautiful.
Perhaps Michelangeli reaches same expresivity and sweetness in his performance of Debussy's piano music.
Agreed. His treatment of Debussy in particular is uniquely beautiful. I've yet to hear a single other pianist play Suite Bergamasque with the restrained, brimming emotion that Arrau brings to it. Virtually everyone else rushes through their interpretations, showing off their technical mastery rather than trying to fade into the background and letting the music breathe.

Debe escuchar a una señora llamada Collete Maze, francesa, con 107 años de edad,a esta fecha (Nacida en 1914) quien posee una técnica muy heterodoxa, pues la mano izquierda la apoya con la palma completa y siguiendo los dedos apuntando a la derecha, como acariciando las teclas... el sonido que le arranca al instrumento es mucho mas "impresionista" que lo tocado polifónicamente como usted lo describe por Arrau, a quien considero entre los mejores pianistas del siglo XX, pero no en Debussy.
The music of Debussy is multilayered, and this is probably as important as his harmonic innovations. Claudio Arrau is unique in that sense that we can clearly hear each of these layers. He renders Debussy's pieces with all their complexity.

Out of all the versions Arrau played these the most beautifully imo. Sentimental, yes, like an old man looking back at life, with playfulness and a bit of nostalgia. Which is perfect for these pieces.
It is an intense masterpiece that heals the thirst and lament of the human soul. This is deep and heavy.
Arrau's recordings of Debussy have been among my favorite piano recordings of all time for decades now. Thank you.

Je recommande à tous le livre "Arrau parle", avec Joseph Horowitz. C'était fascinant, et ce que j'entends là ne cesse de faire écho avec ses explications sur sa technique et sa vision de l'interprète. Cette sensation d'accords remplis, orchestraux et ronds, il n'y a que Arrau qui la fait. Je le reconnaîtrais parmi mille pianistes rien qu'aux premières notes.

Peteklatcomposer Arrau began to record the pour le piano for Philips 1991 but he finished it . If you want to hear hear the complete pour le piano you have to go to Sony Classic " The complete RCA and Columbia recordings " . He recorded it completely in 1949 . Maybe you can find it on you tube, I don't know.
I just find out that you CAN find the 1949 Columbia recording of Pour le piano . Unfortunately it is split up on 3 audios you have co bring together yourself. You can also find a live performance from 1959 .

It's indeed the opening of God Save the Queen. The piece was a hommage to a Mr Pickwick, an Englishman. Debussy also quoted the French anthem in the last piece, Feux d'artifice.
Jardins Suis la Pluie- excellently played, I think... impressionists were evoking luminosity, very much; attuning via The Illuminating. A primary teaching of the skalds, or men of knowledge of the aeon was, We are the Luminous Beings, the world is also of luminous energy. Touch your crystal, or luminosity with someone else's was also a wisdom-saying- an ideal regarding social existence... Thehsexo and Juno were Crown deities, that Pisces aeon; a saying "We are pieces of Thehsexo" stems also from such schools; without a Casus, there couldn''t really be a school; the priesthood associated with Crown. The sublime path between Crown and Understanding was called The Illuminating. The word HU, as the Egyptians asserted, divine- one might poeticise, ""Hu is in that garden; Hu is there, even when the rain has driven everyone inside"; and, Thehsexo cannot fail...
I prefer Arrau's Debussy than Michelangeli's

Gieseking for Debussy, Kempff for Schubert, Rubinstein for Chopin and Arrau for Beethoven... Although Richter was probably the most versatile of all but… I guess everything is a matter of opinion when you are in the big leagues...
