Dear Mr. Brian Williams, I've spent all my life looking into the art of movement, dance. In many of its styles classical, folklore, modern, jazz, etc. This includes martial arts, Kong Fu and Tai-ji. Your remark resonates with my 'jealousy" so to speak with the power of music . It always triggered me, as a young dancer, choreographer, (teaching in the academy of dance) and dance history teacher, that no matter how good the dance is, if you take away the music, it is so much less, too much less. Metaphorically speaking, it always 'falls' behind the power of music. Wonderfully equipped with this (geometrical) answer, for the next 40 years it made dances that are asking where is the edge of the human capacity to engage in pre-concepted, pre-organized, pre-composed movements in a multi jointed body working in the gravity field. Unlike known styles of dance, that have to captivate audience from afar, using big movements [180 degrees angle leg splits, or fast spins on toes, i.e. swan lake etc.] here there were no financial limits, as everyone in this project worked from his own love (6 days a week). And yes, it was nicknamed the 'monastery'. In such atmosphere there were created clusters of movements, manifested in one body. Making it possible to compose [at last!] with an alphabet of movement. One can make a theme for one hand, which could 'travel' to your other hand, a leg, of your own, or your partners', or , like Bach here, start using reverse mode, cannons, dispositions, and structure manipulations, to at last, have a work of architecture in space and time. Better still, one can hold the manuscript, read, think in the idiom and share movements with other literati. And have a library of dances! So, now, with the summing experience of 35 years, of pushing the limits of mind and body to express an abstract moving model, in this art of the Eshkol-Wachman movement notation chamber dance group, I would never regret of doing; however, yes, familiar with your comment, I listen to this music, and still am affected in a way only music can bring about.

Baroque music is considered less emotional than later eras of music because they didn't use dynamics as much. The piano wasn't invented yet, composers played the harpsichord or organ and did not add velocity to his notations. The song getting quiet and then getting loud is a huge aspect of what makes music sound "emotional". In the Classical era of music composers had pianos and began to include velocity. Another reason people find both Baroque and Classic music to be less emotional is because it was taboo to utilize the 3rds and 6ths of a scale and composers favored the more "perfect" harmonies like 4ths, 5ths, and octaves. It wasn't until the Romantic era of music (Beethoven) that taboo was shook. The 3rd note in a scale is what gives you the distinct Major or Minor sound and is considered to be the most emotional note of the 7 in the scale.

And the same exchange (Aria Sarabande) is in 4th Partita. These exchanges are somewhat in common, I saw this, say, in Gianluca Luisi recording (by the way, also the finest). As for me, Air best place is before Sarabande, so I switch them in playlists (where possible).
The controversy in my mind is whether to let the music speak without using much of the resources of the modern piano. Those who can do this are the masters of Bach in my opinion. In this category I include Schiff and Sheng.
2:18:57 I'm always baffled by how the Gigue of the Partita No. 6 points 2 centuries into the future. For the contemporary listeners, this must have been as hard to understand as Beethoven's piano sonata no 32 for his contemporaries. Out of their world. Complete abstraction and still eternal beauty.
Love the way he brings out the important voices, helping the listener make sense of this complex music. Also, he conveys beautifully the dance-like quality of so much of Bach's music. Yuan Sheng is clearly among the greatest living exponents of Bach. His rubato and ornamentation are tasteful, and he knows how to use music to tell a story.
Mr. Yuan Sheng is a piano professor of China Central Conservatory in Beijing. He is considered the top Bach pianist in China. He once said, referring to another Bach pianist, Zhu Xiao Mei, "All who play Bach are my brothers." I enjoy his Bach immensely.

Congratulations Mr Yuan Sheng! How wonderful that your excellent Bach playingskills are regarded as ‘the top Bach pianist in China’! However, I wondered if you could broaden your outlook on top playing Bach pianists by referring to them not only as a ‘brother’ but also as a ‘sister’? Your modelled behaviour might give women a better chance of being included. Martha Argerich has amazing piano skills for example, which also includes the ability to play JS Bach extremely well eg see Martha Argerich play Bach Partita No. 2 - ua-cam.com/video/7mFDXNODNyc/v-deo.html Thank you!

Finally a modern piano player of classic who is good and has proper studio versions captured. Some of our best pianists of the 20th century hardly have a few good recordings when they were at their peak or just bad recordings ...
Playing the Partitas means clarifying the lines and symmetry that is so critical to the beauty of Bach. The artist communicates this symmetry well. Careful dialogue and shading is captured throughout. Very contemplative.
“Listen. He only just returned from a trip to find his wife had died. Bach had already lost three children, and he would lose seven more. This is grief and yet the rising notes of joy, shattering his own rules. Can you hear it? This is how men like me pray.” - Neil Gaiman, American Gods
The way he plays it, the dynamics, the soft touch makes this already amazing collection of works by Bach just a little bit better. Truly and amazing pianist.
A lot of insights from the Chinese that are original, full of freshness and energy, the rendering is sublime and the revelation of melodic lines is novel and crystal clear(Gould and Tureck's) that one cannot stop listening on with full joy in his heart. He entered the 2nd round of the 95s' chopin competition, I think he deserves more.

My first listen to this set is promising. I'd say I'd place it in the top five recordings I know, and I know dozens of recordings of the partitas on piano, harpsichord, clavichord, and one on organ. I like the way he varies repeats. Not a lot of musicians do that at all, and, frequently when they do they don't know what they're doing or their varied repeats are dissatisfying. Sheng's touch reminds me of the precise, pearl-like sound of Andras Schiff, though you wouldn't mistake him for Schiff. A wonderful set.
Superbly done. Yuan Sheng lets this divine music speak for itself. Thankfully, he is not infected by what one 19th century critic called, "the Vanity of Virtuosity."
So good, so nice. Someone said he is melodious, yes, and his tone dynamic is beautiful. Among the best Bach that exist. And on Menuet in Partita No 1. I feel like dancing. It's like a waltz. And there is a lot more I can feel but it's difficult to express.

The 3rd note in a scale is what gives you the distinct Major or Minor sound and is considered to be the most emotional note of the 7 in the scale.

I think Sarabande and Air in Partita No. 6 are exchanged-should be IV. Air, then V. Sarabande.
And the same exchange (Aria Sarabande) is in 4th Partita. These exchanges are somewhat in common, I saw this, say, in Gianluca Luisi recording (by the way, also the finest). As for me, Air best place is before Sarabande, so I switch them in playlists (where possible).
Pero madre mía güili, qué haces aquí compañero?
Viva España, coñ*!!!!!
Sos un genio.!!
The controversy in my mind is whether to let the music speak without using much of the resources of the modern piano. Those who can do this are the masters of Bach in my opinion. In this category I include Schiff and Sheng.
2:18:57
I'm always baffled by how the Gigue of the Partita No. 6 points 2 centuries into the future. For the contemporary listeners, this must have been as hard to understand as Beethoven's piano sonata no 32 for his contemporaries. Out of their world. Complete abstraction and still eternal beauty.

Beautiful performance, nothing stimulates the mind like Bach…
Bach’s music is my luxury and magnificent tranqulizer
REZEPTE
Love the way he brings out the important voices, helping the listener make sense of this complex music. Also, he conveys beautifully the dance-like quality of so much of Bach's music. Yuan Sheng is clearly among the greatest living exponents of Bach. His rubato and ornamentation are tasteful, and he knows how to use music to tell a story.
God is now with us !!!. My heart is healtly, is reconfortado!!!. Is wonderfull..God bless Bach, God bless you!!!!. Thank you, so much.!!

It’s Bach. Gods have nothing to do with his talent,.
@@roberthill1166 idiot.
@@roberthill1166 What would Bach respond to that? Yeah I thought so.
Bach is music is calming and peaceful and it has a great melody it’t so amazing
This pianist is amazing; he plays like he was on a harpsichord and this makes the sound like it was never done before. Bravo Mr. Yuen !
2 - ua-cam.com/video/7mFDXNODNyc/v-deo.html
Thank you!

@ I believe "brothers" is a colloquialism like saying "hey guys" - it doesn't imply a gender. At least, that is how I understand the phrase.

Prof Sheng really captures both the vitality of the dances and the somber tones of these partitas beautifully!
he was an organ player complicated on his age but now he is the most brilliat composer ever the humanity seen
well, that's debatable, there are to many good ones to make a final decision
@@freeclassicalmusiclibrary6522 It is possible that J. S. Bach is most often given the top spot by musicologists and musicians..
Finally a modern piano player of classic who is good and has proper studio versions captured.
Some of our best pianists of the 20th century hardly have a few good recordings when they were at their peak or just bad recordings ...
Listening to this whilst reading fairytale stories is perfect. I LOVE IT
Playing the Partitas means clarifying the lines and symmetry that is so critical to the beauty of Bach.
‼️💯The best of the best💯‼️. I can’t believe that I can access these beautifully played Bach Partitas so easily. Thank you, Yuan Sheng! I hope you play at the Sydney Opera House one day!
Adoro !!!!!!!!!!non si stancherò mai ad ascoltare !!!!!!! Bravo Yuan Sheng !!!
Rosja wydała wielu znakomitych kompozytorów i innych artystów.
Yuansheng is absolutely an amazing artist! He always shows subtle changes in his performance.
Thank you so much! Fine performance.
Recorded in Beijing Concert Hall, China.

such beautiful order. Notes are in place but have life within themselves.
its amazin how bach does that!
Thank you for the gold!
Perfection in execution, sensitive, musicality, interpretation ~ absolute excellence! A JOY to listen ~ grazie mille
Beautifully played, transported me to a peaceful world.

The performance on this recording is formidable, reminiscent to Glenn Gould's understanding and feeling of Bach... I love it, thank you so much 🙏

@@roberthill1166 Yes. Fortunately, Yuan Sheng has his own genius, including the understanding it is the music that is the star (the performer shines in the reflection). The review below by Jorge Urzua Urzua is highly insightful.

.....the great and eternal JSB enlightens my soul. The moment it starts, all conflicts of our world are over. We simply don’t listen enough to what the universe keeps telling us...
Mi piace moltissimo
There was a time when many interpreters played Bach's music mechanically. It was "intellectual" music. In their hands, it became boring! Yuan Sheng lets us see the humanity that fills Bach's music.
I have never heard Bach played in such a thoughtful manner. It is as if Yuan Sheng has been able to connect with the spirit of Bach. His interpretations have far surpassed Glenn Gould, Murray Perahia and any other masters out there.
This is superbly played with clarity and some ornamentation that I haven’t heard from other performers. I love it thank you. Subbed immediately to hear more, thanks Yuan. Congratulations must go to the Sound Engineer who expertly captures the crisp tones of the notes
a luminous interpretation that gives these subtle and magnificent scores a crystal-clear clarity. A marvel...

"... my brothers" in his original words in Chinese are "我哥们儿", which actually means "those I have an intimate friendship with", certainly including "sisters"! Indeed we have many "sister" pianists whose Bach interpretations are as wonderful as those by the "brothers", Angela Hewitt, Rosalyn Tureck, Zhu Xiao Mei, Martha Argerich, Polina Osetinskaya, ... The sad situation is, being in the "Peoples' Republic", Mr. Yuan Sheng does not have access to UA-cam so that he cannot read anything we write about his playing!
A very astute observation.
