    This is a great idea for old analog camcorders! I have a Sony 8mm camera like yours and also an RCA Super VHS camcorder from 1987. They both work after replacing belts and cleaning. I tried to use the RCA SVHS camcorder to film 100% of my Buckner Bigfoot Expedition video however because the thing was so old it crapped out midway through the shoot. I ended up faking a lot of the footage using my iPhone, blowing out the highlights and shadows to reduce the dynamic range, adding noise, and actually copying the footage to VHS and back into the computer. Having a small digital recorder would've worked great! Making production faster is a great idea. Digitizing the footage and even directly transferring it off DV tapes via firewire is time consuming.

    Keep in mind that this is only an option if you cannot find a portable DV recorder that connects to the 4pin firewire port (aka DV in/out) of the camera. Because with the AV method you are not getting 100% of the quality these cameras can deliver because you are letting the camera convert the digital audio and video to an analog signal which the little recorder then converts to digital audio and video once again. The Firewire plug of the camera allows you to connect it to a computer or a compact DV recorder that records the un.compromised raw DV stream and letting you record it as AVI or MOV files with the ACTUAL quality these cameras offer. At least the Digital8 and MiniDV camcorders. Not the Hi8, Video8 and VHS-C cameras. Those of course can be used normally with the AV cable method because there's nothing digital coming out from those.

      i wonder if the quality loss is negligible since the original quality isn't that high to begin with.

      @@12ammcnight he's saying that if a camera has a firewire output port, it would be wise to get a digital recorder with a firewire input if possible. The firewire port transmits more data than the other ports (like an RCA port) giving you better quality image if you use it. It's actually a great point to make!

    • @KRAFTWERK2K6
      @KRAFTWERK2K6 6 місяців тому +5

      @@killian-flood ah it's a digital 8 camcorder. Well, i would definitely look for a compact DV capture unit like a Sony HVR-MRC1. I am currently looking for materials that basically allows anyone to turn a Raspberry Pi or Arduino into something like that at a fraction of the costs. Because there aren't much Tapeless DV capture boxes like that, which let you capture the raw original Digital Video & audio stream from the camera to DV avi files. Which is basically that this HVR-MRC1 does. You connect it via Firewire port of the camera and that little unit. It is essentially like Recording to Digital8 or MiniDV Tapes, just without the tapes. No quality loss. You get 1:1 of the quality this camera offers. And that thing works with every Mini DV or Digital 8 camcorder that has a firewire output jack.

    My old sony DCR-TRV238 just died and i'm looking for a new system 😥
    Did you notice any difference in iq with tapeless vs firewire with DV cameras?
    Because those usually looked crisper and punchier when outputting via firewire or s-video rather than video composite (trrs/rca).
    Also, firewire gave u uncompressed signal... which codec/bitrate/resolution does this immersive RC record?
    Sure it's handy but i got very nice results with the FW method... like images looking crisp and almost HD-like but with that lo-fi vibe.

      I just checked their site, they’re currently sold out of the Powerplay. Dunno if they will make more because these DVRs were quite specialist even within the fairly specialist scene of FPV drones. Many have moved to a digital system which would make this device redundant, though analogue broadcasting FPV still has its niche so maybe there will be more batches. Failing that it’d be worth seeing if they are being sold secondhand by someone who went digital and doesn’t need it any more

I've also noticed that it's stretched into a 3:2 aspect ratio, so you should correct it to a 4:3 ratio by setting the pixel aspect ratio to around 0.8889 or 1.1853. Maybe you should either just record onto tape or get a capture card that inputs through FireWire.
