Evapo-Rust for the screws. Take them out and soak them in a cup and they’ll come out spotless.
As someone who restores vintage RC cars. Rust always looks a whole lot worse than it is. It is actually easy to work with if you get the right products!
Products like evapo-rust or anti rust from noverox will make easy work restoring the bolts to almost new condition.
I have had cars that where basically at the bottom of a pond. Now looking brand new.
To restore plastics, use bumper spray (the stuff you use to restore the black plastics on a car) or silicone spray. It will get that fresh new plastic look in a matter of minutes.
Lay the parts in the sun for a bit so they warm up and dose them in silicone spray. Get a old paint brush and brush all the parts so you dont miss a spot. After thats finished you can spray them off with some water and let them dry.
Dont ever let a rust bucket turn you away from a nice deal is what i can say. :)
It might be a lot of work. But once your rc car is done, ready to drive.. it is so rewarding!
Happy building! -
You and I are cut from the same cloth, Mark. I hate picking up second hand trucks or cars, and not going to town, cleaning them!
I picked up a very well abused, Carisma Sca1e Coyote last year, and ended up with pots of parts in cider vinegar. Just make sure you rinse them off really well. Works a treat.
With the plastic parts, I know I've seen someone use soapy water, with olive oil in it! That leaves the plastic shiny!
Looking forward to seeing the finished car. 😎👍🏻
These repair/build videos are awesome! Great value for those looking to pick up something used (like I did when I started) and jump in to making it right!
Tip: put all small plastic parts in plastic net bags and put the bags and the bigger parts in the automatic dish washer, works fine
I use the vinegar to clean really rusty tools sometimes. Works really well. Also works better on somethings then it does others.
Good morning bro always great video enjoy the weekend
Is that screwdriver similar to like an impact where you can dial it down so you’re not over tightening?
Also just ordered one of your badass one handed controller wheel things! Cant wait to try her out with my converted now brushless LGC Stamped!!
its very therapeutic till one of those rusty screws get stripped, most frustrating part of rc cars
Great job Mark I will try that method myself.👍👍
Thanks for sharing the apple cider tip. Really helpful. Keep up the education!!!
Nice! Gonna have to try that AC Vinegar. I buy everything used. And, I have a bunch of huge parts from an eBay lot I bought and wasn't sure what they were from, lookin' like they are X-Maxx! 👍
Would love to know more about the moonlight crawl events
Great video idea, wish this had been out when I started my first rc rebuild of a slash vxl (the 47 Mike Jenkins one) that was given to me. Definitely going to go back over my screws with apple cider vinegar cause they drive me nuuuuuts. But man, I am deep into this rebuild as far as cost… plus I still need batteries and a new body. I cleaned EVERYTHING with soap and water and wd40.
I love watching you go through the headache of that! And no I'm not a sadistic person. Haha! I remember the first time I took my highly modified clod-buster to the beach! No matter how well I washed it a month later everything was rusted bearing seized motor seized and I had aftermarket Motors and speed control which was waterproof thank God! But it was such a headache next time I see all the gear boxes put sealed bearings on the outer shaft and put stainless steel Hardware throughout no problems with the beach again! Thank you for the video it teaches me about the x-max I'm not a fan I've always been a Losi nut! That Team Associated as well. I got a break all my old stuff out rebuild it converted to brushless and see how much stuff I can trash that I can't get parts for anymore hahaha thanks again for the video I've watched many viewers
I keep mine inside, I had them in the garage before the humidity kicked into high gear. Traxxas support told me not to keep them in humid weather as it would rust parts/components (I assumed that but wanted to double check). I'm outside of Houston, so it gets hot and humid for sure. I don't even like going out to run them in this weather, too damn hot for me. Spring and Fall are perfect.
Edit: Great tips BTW, thanks for the vid!
Hey, I’m only in college station and I get the same thing down here. Was it really recommended for you to keep your RC inside and not in the garage? Of course I have all my work stuff in workstation in the garage and it’s always easier to keep the car outside in there instead of inside where my kids could get a hold of it.
@@jondrozd4321 They may have been more worried about the batteries not being in a controlled environment. They recommended the vehicles. After being out here for over 10 years, I've had BBQ's rust apart, LOL. I also keep the garage open a lot, so it gets pretty nasty inside when left open. I'll reach out again to see what they say.
Batteries especially these “Lipos” I do definitely see not being in a hot garage..
That's amazing I didn't know that stuff would work can't wait til the next video thanks Mark
Mellissa is gonna be pissed 🤣🤣🤣
Wow! Great tip for the rust!
Absolutely enjoy doing builds myself sometimes even more than driving it , so much so that I got a few of my friends at work in to the hobby and now they come to me for advice and help doing repairs for them😂😂😂
by the way keep up with this kind of content so far its my favorite 🤙🏾🤙🏾🤙🏾
Those diffs may not be leaking, alot of people put marine grease on the Pinon and ring gear in excess so it flies all over
The only thing I notice with evapo rust which really is my go too I do a lot of vintage is if the rust is bad enough you might lose the original coat of parts. But it is by far the best iv tried and does not smell
Wow that truck looked a little rough, I recently got an 8s X-Maxx that i'm in the process of restoring and modifying to be a near clone of Jason Perrin's X-Maxx with some of my own mods.
Pb blaster for rust is what I use
Calcium Lime Rust (CLR) also will take the rust off and a little faster too. Apple Cider Vinegar (ACD) attracts bugs and kills them. We use ACD as a natural bug killer for our plants.
Very cool video, I like it!!
Awesome video apple cider vinegar will have to try
Great rebuild tips
a lot of work but nice job , appel vinegar thanks for the tip
Awsome video can't wait for the next one
Any rust remover will take off bluing, bluing is a layer of corrosion.
Honestly wouldn’t waste the time on the bearings. Just get a few sets from Fast Eddy Bearings and replace them.
I'm actually curious about the original 6s xmaxx. I've run mine on 6s and it's pretty underwhelming but I assume that because of the different motor and esc spec the original xmaxx that's made for 6s should run a little better? But I'm not sure. Anybody know how a 6s xmaxx compares to a 8s xmaxx running on 6s?
No risk it no biscuit lol sorry to tell you that im gonna steal that line 😂
Dang. That's commitment lol. 👏 awesome tips and tricks. :-) thanks Mark.
haha! right! You're welcome! thanks for watching!
Gotta watch this 😊
Where do you do your high-speed runs at?
When I sell a rc vehicle I spend some money and time to make it look the best I can and usually end up spending around $50-75 just so I know I’m selling a good one and since you live close to Traxxas you can always swing by and pick up new screws because those are really cheap and Traxxas sells screw kits for just about all of the vehicles that they sell
This is why I’m convinced it’s almost never worth buying used. I can tear apart and rebuild anything but at what point is it worth the cost savings. I wouldn’t pay more than 200-300$ for that Xmaxx considering condition and service needed. It needs electronics, body is crap, and all moving parts needs servicing, bearings and screws need checked too. That’s not a beat truck but it needs work for sure.
I'd say the last run that had was on the beach... Super rusty everywhere... And sand in the esc... It will be great once your done bro.... ❤
The one thing about working on your RC is having everything you need including tools then it’s fun but if you don’t have everything it’s super frustrating I’m getting much wiser though & much more prepared now.
As we get wiser, we have to make less trips to the store 😂
Just bought a Xmaxx 8s in really good condition for $300
Just pure vinegar works Mark. 😀
looks like its just been wet at some point or stored in a damp location, salt water from a beach would have done more damage.
I’ve always heard toilet cleaner kills rust too
Why not use black paint to get rid of the rust stains?
Lol those lights are from O'Reilly auto super bright actually used em on a beat body I have for my xmaxx.
haha! good to know! thanks
That truck would rip hard if you did the 8s power up and kept that motor. It'll do close to 60 mph and standing backflips haha
Bro I wish I had one.!! 😩🔥🔥💪🏼
alot of work man rust is bad good luck
M,s,m comparing that body to the one I have yours is bright new compa 😅😅😅 keep bringing those fun and informative videos mark,, thanks for sharing bro,
hg7 stain away for the rusty plastic my friend ;)
Next time for removing rust use vinegar not cider vinegar. Just fyi and after soak use water to dillute for ten minutes. I use 91% vinegar.
I assume you mean white vinegar?
@@SpeccyMan Yes sir I use this method to refurbish Wood planes and everything metal that has rusted.
I have a red cat blackout racing I’m trying to make it faster I’m new to the economy world any suggestions
Ballistol gun cleaner🤓🧐😎
another good idea regarding the plastic parts is to put them in warm water with soap ,of any kind ,and afterwards try to scrub the really dirty areas with an old toothbrush. After you rinse them you give them a good wipe and then you spray them with some good old fashioned WD 40. You leave them overnight ( or more ) and then you wipe them with a piece of cloth and they will shine !!!!!! P.S: Stop using your wife's kitchenware, cause there's a 99,99999% chance that you will be in trouble.😛
You keep commenting on all the rust, you wouldn't want to see the cars I work on up here in Minnesota lol
To each his own, but I would have to get that Xmaxx for free if it required that much work.
Can you make more 4 tec 3.0 Toyota supra Videos please
How much for these worth?
And to think some people actually drink that stuff.
MARK,, you need to rest brother !! You sound sicky poo!!!!!!! You work to hard . Taking one for the team huh??? Take care of yourself , another hood video as always . We all appreciate ya man 🤙🤙
Rusty screws? Don't care. Rusty driveshafts? Don't care. Rusty springs? Don't care. It's the rusty bearings that get ya.
apple cider vinegar ?? Damn !!!!!
COOL BEANS 😁🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙
Mark, why is the hood of your Mustang always open?
Its on a battery tender…
👍💯💯💯
Always, ALWAYS seal the wheel air vents and ventilate the tires instead, before running them even one single time. Sealed wheels / ventilated tires are impervious to damage from water and debris.
To this day it boggles my mind why so many premounted tires come with vented wheels. Why???
The 6s version does have enough power to kill the tires. Trust me those first tires were 🗑.
Give it to me I’m new in the hobby I’ll happily take it lol
Why not buy a body from Proline racing and custom paint it? That'll look a whole lot better. That's what I've done for my Xmaxx and it looks much more badass 😎 👌
trying to keep this rebuild as cheap as possible. They do make awesome bodies though!
Uh oh
If u were not such a Traxxas fan boy maybe Losi would have sent you a motorcycle , the entire internet is going nuts over the motorcycle and ur missing out hahahahah
Blessings from TDee hobbies RC lifestyle,,, #444
Wow...... First view and comment.
You regret it a lot but you love Traxxas. When you buy a used RC at a good price you know that you will always find something defective. I don't know why you feel it. and you say it's worse than you thought if that's what you bought.🤐
first!
I.m sorry the car is bad
First😂
@Mr_marksantamaria300 nice try
Hey Mark could you send me your p.o.box would like to send you a little something thanks Joe
