MBTI Cognitive Functions aren't as complicated as they seem. This episode of Visual Personality is an introduction to the 8 MBTI Cognitive Functions explained for absolute beginners. In future videos we'll dive into more specifics on each Cognitive Function, but in today's video I wanted to share the basics of the framework so that future content can make more sense.

Jumping into Cognitive Functions too fast can be really overwhelming and confusing - Ti? Ne? Introverted Sensing? Extroverted Feeling?
At a basic level, Cognitive Functions and your Personality Stack are trying to describe more clearly the preferences and tendencies we all have. It's a framework that gives us better ways to describe how we like to see the world and how we like to make decisions in this world.
There are 8 Cognitive Functions in Myers Briggs -
4 are Perceiving Styles:
Introverted Intuition (Ni)
Extroverted Intuition (Ne)
Introverted Sensing (Si)
Extroverted Sensing (Se)
4 are Decision Making Styles:
Introverted Feeling (Fi)
Extroverted Feeling (Fe)
Introverted Thinking (Ti)
Extroverted Thinking (Te)
In today's video I wanted to breakdown the basics of how these cognitive functions work together to bring color and insight to your Personality Type. In future videos, we'll be diving into the specifics of each "colorful" Cognitive Function as clearly and visually as possible so if you're interested - subscribe and tell a friend!
The goal of this channel is to make Personality Analysis as fun, entertaining and easy to understand as possible. Uncovering your Personality Superpowers should be fun, not confusing! Let's dig in together!

One minute in and it’s already gold
Please continue this series , i really want to learn how you perceive the cognitive functions. You explain things very well and logically , it's great.
Female ENTJ here
Ngl this channel seems like a great beginning for sth rly meaningful in the MBTI community
Glad I'll be following your work from the very beginning
Thank you!! Wow female ENTJ! Very rare.
It’s hard to keep up and make all the content I have planned, but it will come this year, slowly but surely :) thanks for the patience! My hope is sincerely to make a difference :)
ayyy another female entj!
Female ENTJ too!
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR TALKING ABOUT THE COGNITIVE FUNCTIONS AND NOT JUST THE FRIGGIN LETTERS IT’S MY BIGGEST PET PEEVE! I can’t stand to hear one more person say “I’m an INFJ/ENFJ depending on my mood” 😂 ok rant over
Thank you for teaching actual Myers-Briggs. I love it
Haha me too! Hope you enjoy the future videos and the videos on the main channel :)
As a thinking person I'm fed up with INFJ people stating how great they are while I'm freaking trying to find out objective information to truly discover who I AM..😅God I loved your comment 🙏
@@Be_Positive-_-bloodType-haha Yes, thank you! So many people just want to be a “rare” type and feel like a special snowflake instead of the actual REALITY which might actually help them 🫢😅
@@Sophiasticated77 unfortunately it's the sad truth, the majority of people are outwardly driven to the point they can't see how beautiful and special they are in their own flesh, I don't say that being socially driven is necessary bad, well it's what got society to move on to begin with! ... Sadly those seeking to wear the "rare" flag🤦 are seeking others' admiration... I really struggled to find objective channels in this MBTI realm! Got me confused of my type many many maaany times to the point of having an identity crisis for a bit🤭 who am I👽 what am I😅.. especially the N and S functions that nobody seems to clearly grasp hehe let not mention F and T 😅 well at this point I go by what I was called since I was 6yrs old "weird" 🤭 got called weird last week as well 😂 that's something that many people seem to agree on🤭🤣.. bottom line.. be weird an love it🖖
Sorry for the really long comment 🙏bless you 🍀
I did my personality test with 16 personalities and I don't feel like another human had understood me more than that algorithm just described me. I feel like I'm friends with that website now. I'm looking forward to learning more!!
What type did you get? :)
INFP-T
Yay, I'm an INFP-T too 😊
I am an INFP-T too and now I feel a little sus... lol
ENFP, though I am more introverted than a lot of extroverts and more balanced in my thinking and feeling. Extremely intuitive, big picture, and good at taking complex concepts and explaining them in a way people can learn more easily. Good at advocating for others, being an educator, do well in public speaking, and a writer.
Other people see me as confident, humorous, intelligent, people person, loyal, honest, cheerful, a leader, and passionate. They know I love books and cats. They seem to be inspired by me especially at how I compensate for my disabilities and keep on trucking.
I LOVED THIS.
i’m an enfp and people usually say i’m funny, kind/compassionate, insightful, deep for the good and for the bad they say i am self centered, self absorbed, a “hot mess”, forgetful, insensitive, “weird” (sometimes said with a not so nice tone, sometimes used as a term of endearment)
Thanks so much for sharing!!
Hands down the BEST explanation of MBTI I've ever seen❤️ Please please please keep the videos coming ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Wow you are amazing. The way you explain things are so easy to understand. People should find your videos instead of those misleading ones.
Thank you so much 😀
I'm an ISTJ. I think I'm fairly methodical, like to sort through options and whatnot. Love LOVE making lists (got so excited when I realized I could organize my desk better and streamline my productivity lol), thorough itineraries when I'm traveling (people hate traveling with me if I'm planning, I'll literally make a list of everywhere I think is important to see, then plot a course that makes the most efficient use of our time by finding the shortest walking path, etc - if I'm not planning the trip, I'm super lowkey haha). I don't love big social gatherings where I have to interact with people, but I love studying or unwinding in busy areas where I can absorb everyone else's social excitement, if that makes sense. Cafes, parks, busy areas with lots of bustle really help me focus and feel productive. Terrible at making decisions if it's about something small or unimportant (where to eat, what to do, that sort of thing), but major decisions I just sorta go for it, not sure if that's weird, but drives my family crazy.
This is a great description of ISTJ. I can highly relate. I feel we are always brushed off as we don't care and so people don't pay much attention. Or the other way around completely and find us so picky they want to please our tastes.
I wish there was more content on Istj
I love this because I have alway felt like I have had personality traits that clash with each other. Like I’m introverted but can be extroverted in certain situations.
waiting for more in-depth lessons about cognitive functions!
I remember trying to learn about cognitive functions years ago and I was like "I maybe too dumb for this" lol, but this makes it soooo much easier to understand. Thank you!
That's officially one of my favorite channels. I need more videos
I love the way you break down the cognitive functions! I’ve been following mbti for a while and I look forward to watching more of your videos
Eric, i love the way you explained this. Cant wait to see each function explained!
This was the best way for me to start understanding cognitive functions and I’ve seen lots of videos!!
I’m gonna send this to my friends when they label someone as an “F” if they are slightly emotional lol
Presentation is clear. Would love to see more of your videos in the future!
What a great way to explain this!! Why aren't you famous!!!
OMGOODNESS, I’ve been watching different videos and trying to look up and understand cognitive functions for a couple months now. I couldn’t understand why there are only 4, and what exactly the role of the bottom 2 were. Your video explained it spectacularly!!! Thank you! 🙏🏽
Glad I found this channel, this is really helpful! 💖 I'll be looking forward to more videos💖
Thank you for this video I learned so much and I’m exited to see more
The analogies were really helpful in seeing how these play out in the real world!
I keep getting either ENTP or ENFP. I know my dominant function is extraverted intuition, but I seem to be at a constant battle between Ti and Fi. But this video was super super helpful, I can't wait to see more! :)
Love your videos on personality. Never heard it explained any better. You’re awesome. 🙌🏻
Yay! Thank you!
I just wanna say how well organized this video is. Also, I love the use of colors and integrating those colors with each cognitive functions. I just like everything about this video. 😅🙌 thank you for this video. I look forward to watching future videos about these in more detail.
Thank you! I put a lot of thought into it! Hope you enjoy the future videos and the ones on the main channel :)
Thank u!! This was so helpful and accurate. Waiting for the next videos!!
this helped me so much I was so confused on mbti and cognitive functions
Looking forward to following along! It takes a thorough understanding of such a complex topic to break it down and simplify it for easier digestion and you're certainly the person for the job. Great introduction
Thank you man! You know how exciting this stuff is for me :). Appreciate it!
I’m an INFJ who loves people and “figuring them out” however, cognitive functions have remained somewhat of a mystery for me. Thank you so much for your well explained work. ENFPs are some of my favorite people and you saying that they share the same cognitive functions as an ISFJ has my mind blown and is making me take a step back and reevaluate some of my relationships. Thank you!!!
i think i’ve just found the right channel. great video!!
This is awesome! Your explanation really works with me. Please make more!
I love how understandable you make this! Really well done.👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thank you!
I Loved the use of colors!! Very nice explanation and visual.
Fuck I’d love to see you keep this series still going
This is great! Super helpful. More please!
Yesssss the moment I was waiting for!!!
it's not the explanation i wanted but it's what i never knew i needed. this makes things that I don't even know I don't know much easier for me to understand thank you
So happy to read this!
love your channel. i’ve been trying to understand cognitive functions for YEARS. thank you for simply explaining cognitive functions!
You got it! So happy this could help!
Have you seen my main channel? Eric Wen? I unpack the functions more individually there :)
Just found your channel. Im obsessed
Hi. I just did the quiz, and I got ENFJ-A. I'm so looking forward to more content like this.
Best explanation about cognitive functions! I hope your channel gets bigger and bigger!
Thanks so much! Check out my main channel Eric Wen if you haven't yet already :). Lots of analysis videos there!
Hope you did not forget these videos, really helpful ones❤️
OMGOMG I LOVE YOU THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS. I FIND THIS SO INTERESTING AND I LOVE INTPS AND UR ONE SO IT JUST MAKES THIS 100 TIMES BETTER!! THANK YOU!! :))
Great video.
If I were to start learning about cognitive functions from the beginning, that would be this video. I like the way it is superficially deep.
Love the video, as an INTP as well, I m actually thinking about creating content on youtube about this, but in portuguese, because I m brazilian, and we don't have as much good material about MBTI. And both of your channels are really inspiring! I hope to see more of this series, the visual part of it is amazing! Congrats for the great work and effort you put into these videos!
Beautiful content!
I talk about study in my channel/Instagram, and I really wanna do some tips based on cognitive function. U r a huge inspiration for this! Thank you so much ❤️
☺️☺️ so happy to hear!!
Fascinating. I love how you explain things. Having this knowledge is actually pretty practical.
Thanks for being here!!
Loved this! Would love to see more videos on each of the functions
I can’t wait for more!!!!
thanks again, one more to save on my playlist of great content from other creators.
Really nicely done. Love the color metaphor and how you articulated the cognitive functions.
Thank you!
Looking forward to seeing more of your videos if you plan on it. I’ve enjoyed seeing how you watch other people in their videos to type them. I tend to believe that what people put on the outside is not their true self, which is a flawed tendency, to say the least. Practicing breaking those flawed mental assumptions though and it’s fun.
There’s no cognitive function that can explain the three thumbs down on this video
thank you so muchhh this is truly a gem, explanation of mbti without a stereotypes ✨❣️
Glad you liked it! Thanks for being here!
Your video is so well laid out. Congrats on the new channel! Here for the goods!
:) thank you so much Daniel! I really hope this content can help you see more clearly what you’re bringing to the table!
@@ThinkMoreDeeply I just did my personality test using the link you posted. It’s so eye-opening some of the things I read about myself. I’m an ISTP-A
You felt it was a match? Very exciting!
your content is really enriching
This is really helpful!
I really like your content, it helps me a lot🥰
Great video. Using color patterns to match usability of the Functions is genius. Literal blind spots lol. Also while I shouldn’t have to say this the view of people being nuanced and typed not being so separate from each other but instead combos that all connect while ignoring stereotypes is something not enough people say in this community
love your vids man!
PLEASE POST MORE ON THIS CHANNEL
liking the visuals :)
Great content!
this is so good
I’m an infp and honestly I don’t even know what I am lol
Your functions are FiNe SiTe :D
@@melamoonclover9213 hahaha
I am digging going deeper into this topic 😁
Thanks for being here!!
That was really good 😍👌
I really appreciate your content
So good, wow!
My brain currently feels like jumbled watching this I never knew how in depth it was, lol now I’m trying to evaluate myself... 😅
Great Content 👍
it's so interesting seeing an istp explain cognitive functions. abstract yet still very understandable. my dominant introverted intuition would never let me explain something like this lol.
I’m an INTP :) my lower introverted sensing with Ti def really helps me break things down into understandable grounded bits :)
haha i didn’t fully understand the dom Ni abstract pattern soup swimming and blurriness until I dated an INFJ haha it seems a pretty confusing haha
It’s so cool tho at the same time and let’s you guys do some amazing things!! Are you an INFJ OR INTJ?
@@ThinkMoreDeeply INTP!! sorry i knew that. I'm an INFJ (: I love ur purpose & mission for this channel and ur main channel, btw. you give amazing insight and encouragement. Especially for me since I get discouraged by the "abstract pattern soup swimming and blurriness" stuff that comes out of my own mouth most times lol.
Thank you so much! I’m so glad to hear it can resonate and help :)
Super helpful!!
ok but this cleared up so much
Te-rrific content, Eric Wen.
Great video! Really love how in depth you are getting on the topic. When I was in school, and having some difficulties, I was given a bunch of tests and one of them was the Myers Briggs. I remember taking the test but wasn't told what my results were. Luckily, I am pretty sure my mom has a copy of the test and my results. I am going to see if she can find it cause I am very curious now as to what the results said.
Let me know! I’m curious too!!
@@ThinkMoreDeeply Will do!
I subscribed so fast
Did anyone else come from the Olivia Rodrigo analysis
That I can think of, you are the only person who's said anything about my personality type and I don't remember what you said other than you were sure of what I was. 😅
Enfp - always thinking of new outside the box I deas and possibilities and connections and also listening deeply to what feels right to you- your authentic raw self and individuality
@@ThinkMoreDeeply Thanks! I'm really looking forward to learning more about all of this.
Thank you. Wow!
Im INFJ so that means i have introverted Intuition and extroverted feeling. Am i right?
Yup! Exactly! Those are your top two!
You have other ones you use as well too though :)
your videos are so fucking good

I made a test of cognitive funtion, in a random page. And I'm still the same
INTP 🙂
Great explanation. I like how you used color as a way to represent each cognitive function. However, it might best to remind MBTI beginners that the actual colors themselves don't carry significant meaning. It would be unfortunate if someone believed purple only meant Introverted Intuition for the rest of their lives haha
😂 fair point
Waiting for more videos
are you going to upload more on this channel or just on your main one? just curious :) i love the theory
I don´t really know if i´m an infp or a enfp, i use Fi and Ne for sure but i dont know in which order, I´m more of a introverted person and I´m rlly dreamy and stuff that describes the classic infp but somehow i just love enfp´s so much i wish i could be one
500th like!
Beautiful ☺️☺️☺️💖💖💖
This is awesome!
Edit: people usually say we are overly excited about everything, great at starting projects but not finishing them, I’ve seen us described as “manic pixies” before lol - does any of that give you a guess? 😂😂
Lol Enfp?
@@ThinkMoreDeeply you got it haha
So interesting...not sure what to say on what other people say about my personality 😜
Seems like there might be some clues to be discovered there! :)
@@ThinkMoreDeeply yeah lol
Surprised pple need this slow drawn-out explanation all of the information is in the cognitive functions & they are are arranged for you in your type ...
Are you going to make more of these videos?
Eric can you make a video please explaining the rules of the four cognitive functions, the function stacks to make a personality result
It’s on my Patreon!

Eric where are you? Pls continue the series : )
Great video! Very helpful and well-made. I have a question I've always been curious about. I'm ENFP (54% Extroversion, 66% Intuition, 67% Feeling, 57% Perceiving). Since my E is pretty balanced (I've gotten 51% before), some say it's close to INFP. This is slightly confusing because we have the same cognitive functions, but just different orders (ENFP: Ne, Fi, Te, Si and INFP: Fi, Ne, Si, Te). What does this mean? Do I just switch between using my Ne and Fi mainly? I'm wondering, when these percentages are pretty close (I know other people who have closer percentages in their results), what does it mean in terms of cognitive functions?
Also, since my P and J are pretty close too, it's confusing because ENFJ have opposite functions from ENFP. I generally try to be balanced and challenge myself to go out of my comfort zone of how I go about things to try to get better at using my other functions too. But sometimes I do struggle because it doesn't always work out lol
It's so weird for me to think that in an alternate universe, I am an ESFJ, like that's so odd and fascinating to think about as an INTP... I've met and befriended an unhealthy ESFJ before (which is rare to begin with) and let me tell you, when push comes to shove, they can act like a frazzled version of INTP, like for a split second I saw myself in them and thought, wow it's like an even messier version of me...
