In today's video, Zee and I unpack the basics of how Introverted Intuition (Ni) actually works as a mental process and explain exactly how and why it's super connected to Extroverted Sensing (Se).
When starting out, Ni can be really tough to understand and learn about on your own, especially with how it's described online. It's often referenced in a very abstract "magical" way - something to do with "visions" "symbols" or "patterns in the mind"...but more simply, how does it actually work? I hope today's discussion, visuals and examples given can help demystify Ni for you!

Yes! Thanks for making an explanation that doesn't make Ni seem like a magic prophet thing... So many problematic descriptions out there, which are confusing at best, and causing NJs to double down on problematic patterns that hurt them, at worst.
The best way I describe the NiSe and SeNi relationship is: Se collect data Ni draw conclusions.
Ni fill the gap in the data collected, because it's intuitive function, so we use when we don't have the full picture yet.
Heavy Ni users need fewer data to draw very specific conclusions. This doesn't mean they are accurate.
While heavy Se users, such as ESFPs, can't see beyong what they are sensing. They can't make a big picture well and are usually caught up trying to find all the necessary details to draw a simple conclusion.
Imagine a game where you have to guess the image of a puzzle.
Heavy Ni users will make guesses as soons as the pieces are starting to be put together.
Heavy Se users will wait untill there are few or none piece missing so they can tell what it is.
Spot on, except that in this analogy, heavy Se users will not "wait," they will go out of their way to find the extra pieces, not necessarily noticing that they're missing, but for the sake of gaining more information/data points.

Visualization is arguably the most used tool by an Ni dom, at least INFJ for me. For example when doing a project, let's say, renovating my home office, I would go into Pinterest and Instagram and spend hours finding inspiration. Then in my head, I would come up of an idea of how I would want it to look, a "plan". Until I could gather all my supplies, I wouldn't budge an inch, won't touch anything, won't do anything. A staggering and tedious curation of supplies ensues. I hate doing manual stuff, BUT obsessed with aesthetics. It has to be as perfect as it is in my head. From the desk width, to an off-white desk mat, and to white hydrangeas; everything has to fit. For my peace of mind. LOL. Then, I'll get stuck in a decision paralysis between choices. And I'll weigh EVERY possible pro and con until just deciding just buying both items. For my sanity again. And then, do this for every single item and every single step.
Interestingly, this is where I am actually patient. As long as the END is certain. As long as it is as perfect as it is on my head, I'm willing to wait.
It’s like I wrote your comment myself! It’s not hydrangeas though….I’m going to have tree branches in a large vase and they have to branch off in a specific direction and be the exact same color as my leather chair. And I’ll have zero furniture to sit on for the next six months till I find the perfect pieces. 😆
Hahaha, I'm in a similar place right now. I bought a washing machine some months ago but, unsure of where to put it or exactly how to use it, etc, started stacking preps (cases of food) and everyday needs on it. It's become quite the kitchen ecosystem by now.
Now I'm looking at smaller washing machines rather than going through the agony of undoing all that...
Today I just started looking at shelving for the kitchen.

You nailed it. As an Ni dominant, I get frustrated when I hear a lot of explanations of Ni which are inaccurate. The link to Se is real, and very important to understand. Thank you both. 😊
The INTJ roommate example about snoring made me realize, It's unreal that many predictions that I made as a teen about the evolution of relationships with the family played out exactly as I thought: the irresistible urge to micromanage and persuade would turn arguing into only style of communication, diplomacy would break down and communication would break down.
NI is a trouble shooter trying to prepare for every possibility of a situation. Funny thing is all those imagined scenarios rarely happen. Something out of left field is usually what actually happens. ☺️

I had to move out my uncles house because I knew that with how things were going I was not going to reach my goals or I’d reach them really really slowly which would cause me to resent him so I just moved out and now our relationship is still good - intj

I am exploring myself and this makes so much sense to me. It’s not magical, at least not for me but I get it now. My mind was so active as a child and youth, I fleshed out entire worlds in my mind, people with individual personalities and lives and they lived their lives inside my head. Sometimes the story just played out by itself. I thought everyone did this but I guess not. INFJ
I'm like the opposite of that, as a kid I considered growing up to be a writer but I can't create a fictional world that makes sense and it amazes me when people are able to. And being an ESTJ, Ni is my blind spot and I have trouble seeing the big picture in reality not to mention in a fictional world.
I have creative ideas using Ne, but they're usually connected to things that already exist rather than starting from scratch, for example I've written a bunch of parodies.
This is probably the best explanation of Ni I have heard so far, clear and precise.💛

your explanation of Ni is exactly the way I've learnt to understand it (A while ago I came to my own conclusions after hearing Ni users telling their stories & research). Ni is very grounded in reality contrary to the psychic/spiritual stereotype Lol.
I've experimented and actually tried to narrow down my Ne possibilities (when i'm in real life situations) in order to ''simulate'' Ni and the hardest part is thinking about things in a purely realistic way. My mind always goes to extremes or to lalaland 🤭

It's best to work on the four functions that you do use, so if your Ne ideas are being unrealistic when you don't want them to be you should try to work on your Ti or Te depending on which one you use (Te I'm guessing?).

I think I'm an Ni dom. I relate so much to this video expecialy the example with someone imagining how Japan would be like. I had exactly the same situation but with another country. I was doubting my type because I couldn't relate to the psychic stereotypes so now it's much more clear to me.

Love this! Especially the example with the roommate. That's pretty much what I do all the time- I play out the most likely scenario and where it leads. All the examples gave such a more realistic way Ni works without making it seem so woo woo 👍

I used to doubt that I was INTJ but that's because I didn't realize just how heavy of an Ni user I am. For example, a friend in my group chat could say something that makes no sense without context then another friend who knows what they're talking about would add on to the message without letting anyone else know.
With just those two out-of-context messages alone, I start to fill in the blanks and think of what the context behind them are until I finally narrow it down to why they sent such messages. It's also probably why people find it hard to hide things from me no matter how much they try to hide clues about their situation and all that.
That doesn't always mean I get it right, though.

You nailed it. Sometimes I imagine having a conversation about an idea or something in a book. Also, I really like to navigate through new areas of the city, to see how people in that environment live and interact with each other.

Thank you for explaining it so well. I find the comparison with 3D animation really useful to understand how Ni works because, in the same way, you use real-life information to reproduce it in an imaginary world and create potential situations from it. Like simulations of car crash accidents. Animators do many different scenarios to predict the potential damage taken. Ni works the exact same way to try to predict everything that could be or what will actually be. It's really good to have a deeper understanding of Ni through Se because many disrespectful people usually think Ni users are bringing imaginary ideas from nowhere while in reality, it takes the source directly from the real experience of life itself. That explains why Ni users CAN be right in advance without having the need to verify nor experience. It expands upon reality to say it clearly. Ne tends to be more trusted but they base their possibilities upon their memory/their internal sensory experiences of a real-life experience, not the experience directly which makes a difference.
What we need to remember is that high Se users have Ni too so it can also be used the other way around to help to act better with more meaning behind actions. What always baffles me is how people don't understand they daily use Ni in minor ways in their life. It's probably the vague understanding of what intuition is that makes people uncertain of this function. Ne is questioned less only because it doesn't dive as deep and precisely as Ni does and prefers being broad instead.

We're indeed not psychic. We're just quite good at putting 2 and 2 together. Or if it's longer 2, and 2 and 3 and 4. Still simple to understand but does require a certain ability of abstraction. To imagine what's not there yet.

Wow I loved this!! Particularly the three examples you gave in the final half of the video. The first of those is actually one of the qualities I love about my “brain”. Fantasizing and having a creative mind is something many types have. But the way I experience it is on a whole different level. While experiencing things, I always have a second experience of that experience going on in my head, it’s like there’s two layers to my experience just like you explained it earlier in this video. My sister (probably ENTP) always tells me she’s so annoyed by me when we’re travellin by bus or train. She says You sit there with your headphones, looking out the window and you look so happy while I’m dying of boredom. And I’m like Yeah that’s because I’m experiencing all these things inside my head while taking in the scenery that goes by and listening to the songs in my ears. I actually suspected this was an Si thing to do, for some reason. So I was torn between ISFJ and INFJ, although I lean more towards INFJ. But I always have my doubts even though I’ve been studying MBTI for more than 3 years now. I think this video just helped me decide once and for all that I AM an Ni dom and not Si dom. Going to watch your video with the INFJ talking about Ni now. Thank you for this video btw!

Great explanation! I finally have a good understanding of how dominant Ni looks like. I used to think it’s similar to how Ni normally shows up in us INFP, where you sit there and get a hunch about the future, but the visualization part truly took it to another level. I’ve actually had these very realistic and immersive visualizations only 3 times in my life, where you feel, see, smell every little detail of the scenario and let it naturally play out, these 3 experiences were so defining and life changing to me that it’s a little jarring to think someone can just do this on a daily basis.
Yes! I used to think I could understand or relate to some parts of Ni too as an INTP when I first heard about it but the more I learned about what it actually was, and how it works, especially the realistic visualizing parts I was like omg nope I never do that! My version of wondering about the future and speculating is way different!
As a lifetime INFJ (firmly entrenched in senior citizenship) I've come to the conclusion that I am a theoretical and philosophical mystic and the practicing skeptic.
Good description and examples. I take what I’ve observed with Se, that forms a pattern and I’m able to predict the most likely outcome. Sometimes the most likely outcome doesn’t occur, which makes sense. I try to keep this in mind and use my Ti to take a more scientific approach to not jump to conclusions. Of course if I really see it going 1 way, like the INTJ example, I’ll base my decisions off that.

I would like to give a more mechanical description of Ni from my view as well as a set of imagery granting a more experiential view of it, as someone who is an INFJ (NiFeTiSe 9w1 so/sx 952 LEVF RLOAI Melancholic-Phlegmatic)
Connecting data points or objects, subconsciously held and reflected upon, connecting them then extrapolating or abstracting outward from it into what it may project out to, beyond just the literal nature of the data itself,
Zooming out, revealing an underlying abstract theme or pattern in the data, an aphorism, let's say. How they tend to embody themselves is in the form of visual and very visceral imagery that embodies this pattern, a personal image of sorts.
There is an allusion to working memory, into long-term memory, because of the focus on time and things playing out across time.
What i mean by this is that Ni reflects upon information, whether concrete or abstract, for a longer period of time and doesn't care to switch between different datasets as much, reflecting on it further, whether directly in the immediate moment, but often in the back of the mind, over time.
This helps store it in long term memory. When I say 'data', I'm not just talking about past experiences necessarily, it can be but doesn't have to be, it doesn't really matter, it's moreso about how long that information stays in the mind.
What results from this are these future projections of sorts, these timeless aphorisms or observations, that end up compounding into actual visions, which are then only turn into some kind of hard conclusion and then actionable goal when evaluated by the judging or rational function axis.
I hope this description isn't too verbose though.
I see ni as a defensive and improvising tool against reality expectation. When I see my friend using ni child I want to beat him up. He said if I don't leave this school I would die ni child sometime are worst. Even I myself have a ni child I would just avoid risk of quitting something for the worst. Hope that help istp and isfp.

This is a pretty good Ni explanation, nice to see them.
I'm curious, what do you think of systems like Vultology and its companion system of CognitiveType?
I've followed Vultology too, down to learning how to type (self-taught and a little rusty since I haven't for a while). Eric is the only guy I know that types the right functions (thay align vultology-wise) the few times I watched his videos and compared with the database so I think he's got a good eye and sense of how to sense the functions in behaviour instead of body movements. Sometimes the stack order he ends up with is different though.
As a Ni tertiary user (ISTP) I have issues with disillusionment and expectations about how things will play out. It also makes me prone to making bad assumptions about what will happen.
I would really like to know if Ni users are more accurate at analysing people and guessing stuff... Are there any case study on this ?
As an INTJ with an equal emphasis as an INFJ, it seems difficult to see how Se can exist without Ni. Very similar to micro expressions in the face, a lot of what is true can be determined when a person speaks. However, this works best when that person has invested in the topic of discussion. Dictation doesn't carry this, so it can be harder. People reveal a lot more than they know.
I think I use Ni at work bc I’m always trying to get at the root - what’s the core or source of a thing. I do make a lot of value judgements and I use broad brushstrokes to categorize things and I drill down. Then once I have a door I focus my energy on that. I hate when people say “everything is a priority” - that’s bs to me as an ENTJ.

Is it an Ni thing to visualize everything when for example going on a vacation?? I can see it in my head so clearly that when the moment arrives i just compare it to my vision. Also my mum often says that I shouldn't be mad at her because she didn't say what I had expected her to. I didn't even realise how much I use my Ni until now😅
Sensing in general gives me an idea of word immersion, while intuition gives me an idea of inward exploration in a way that resembles putter world dissociation… I wonder how this idea could be explored. I would like some feedback. The functions are a bit too abstract and I’m looking for feedback and a way to simplify each function’s idea.

Try to explain that to a sensor to see some confusion. I think of it as a model world that I update constantly based on new information. Tweaking the model to get more insights and projecting possibilities into the future and working back from the best outcome. When your intuition is wrong, it's a delusion.
While I *get* it, that's definitely not my primary worry :P ideas are my bread and butter

What’s the difference between how an isfp uses ni and se verses an infj?
Too much to type into a text right now but maybe it could be a video topic in the future! I would say if you watch my latest video with Josh an INFJ tho, you can see how comfortable he is patterning ahead and trusting his hunches with very little concrete confirmation, context or details. He’s willing to trust his patterning and skipping over details or concrete observations which is more of an Ni Dom thing than ISP. ISP’s will read between the lines and guess ahead too but they still value getting a little more concrete information, hands on experience and verifying things more than INJ’s tend to do. Hope that helps?

Take-in sensory data isn't Se
Se cannot work in pair with Ni since both are LITERALLY THE OPPOSITE (I=/=E, N=/=S) + both are perceiving functions
So made it clear with Ni and Se and so on with other functions(Ti/Fe, Fi/Te, Si/Ne)
People who use Se, use Ni, and vice versa. They're interlinked. The level of confidence and reliance on each might change depending on their position in the function stack, but still, they work together.
Wait a minute not everyone thinks this way? Why would you not?
Wait wait wait... Whenever I meet some people I always get a very strong impression of what this person thinks of me etc. Whether they're honest or not etc. Even it's not shown or said directly. I always have some vision of how thinks will look and play out. Eg.: my friend invited me to his birthday, and I already had a vision where everybody's sitting etc. (obviously it was just my Vision which didn't turn out to be true), and I'm a daydreamer and a terrible driver. Does that mean that I use Ni? I thought everybody does these things tbh. I was sure that I'm an Si-Ne user bcus I'm very creative, (I love writing books, songs etc.) and I'm very regimented about routine, I love watching the same tv shows etc.
some of that sounds like Ni could definitely be a possibility worth considering! Not saying you are, but I'd stay open to it!
INFJ here. I think you should consider tgat and explore! I think the thing about routines is confusing some people. This is a behavior, which can have different reasons behind it. For example, INJs might not like making lots of changes and be very spontaneous because they're insecure about their ability to handle all the chaos in the moment, not knowing what to expect. Not because they're attached to their routines and what they mean to them, want things to stay the same/similar, insecure about having to make guesses, etc.
There's soo much to explore in MBTIland! The important thing is to keep asking yourself *why* you do the behaviors you do. What are the processes going in your mind that lead to it? (thoughts, perceptions, information processing...)

If you love watching the same tv shows for not having to choose, it can definitely be Ni. If you love rewatching the same episodes of the same tv shows though I doubt it because Ni users tend to not be attached to the past and generally are the least nostalgic people because their Si function is extremely low. Many parameters need to be considered though, not just this one obviously.
@@kyurei4478I’m INFJ and can be very nostalgic, not so much about my own past but you know when listening to a piece from the 70’s for instance. But for some reason I don’t like watching the same shows or movies again, I don’t like rereading the same books either. Although some times I want to because it was a good story, I’m like “meh, let’s watch/read something new instead, I’ve already been there done that, I need new information and new experiences”.
@@Seca95 Well, I didn't say a Ni users can't I believe. It's just supposed to be more atypical. When most people are nostalgic, they tend to be about their own past, even if it's to be more general. This is the classical type of nostalgia. And with time the weakest functions are supposed to develop. I see what you mean but I think it's more a Fe+Se thing then. Ah you see ? Me neither. It's because my memory of that is just way too accurate and I already remember the main principles. We desire new experiences because we have the Se function instead of reflecting on it because the Ni function has already done this reflective work on things. Types with Ne are the opposite I guess so since they have Si instead, they will like to reflect on the same things to assimilate it fully. At least that's just my theory, we should ask a high Ne user. I think the Ni users will tend to want to read, listen to, watch something again if: it was really exceptional to appreciate the quality once again, very old so it can reach personal feelings, very dense so they need to read it again to assimilate it fully or to put themselves in a present particular state.

Mm.... I think it's introverted thinking that is asking these questions, not ni.
Ni is subconsciously pattern gathering in an abstract way...introverted thinking is what makes any sense of introverted intuition
As an ESTJ who's "Ni blind", it annoys me when people with strong Ni make an illogical conclusion based on one observation. Ni helps you see the big picture which is something I'm bad at, but it also makes people jump to wrong conclusions where Ne is sometimes able to find the right answer by thinking outside the box. When people with Ni notice a pattern that "connects everything", well it doesn't actually connect everything, there are exceptions that seem obvious to me.

This generally happens with immature Ni doms who do not yet know how to integrate Se inf into the Ni dom and therefore conclude hastily. On the other hand, our ability to look at the big picture instead of paying attention to the details, leads us to be more objective and not go in circles.

@@willtravel2758 I would say that information isn't so good or accurate. Don't take my word for it though, check it and test it out for yourself in real life! If that pattern holds up for you, then...you can feel more sure about it for yourself!

Even as an INTP, I am perfectly capable of understanding people who take everything personally, even though I am the exact opposite of them.
But I have tremendous difficulty imagining the Ni-Se pair. Se is less mysterious because I understand that most people, unlike me, have this passion for movement, noise and external excitement. But I can't imagine REAL and PROBABLE consequences for anything. For me, all things are permanently open, there is no direction, there are no paths, just the chance of encounters. Anything could happen
And even when something DOES happen I'm not very impressed. I can imagine N-ways in which what exists could be different. The ability to simulate REALISTIC scenarios, where a set of concrete facts necessarily connect, simply escapes my imagination.

If I may share;
Yet, I myself as an INFJ, once I find out about MBTI, I didn't exact learn it for the first time, but was reminded of it.
What do I mean by that?
Well, I usually know things like a prophet because in a sense, that is actually true.
When I was a child, somewhere in up until I was 10 years old,
I dreamed of my entire future in chronological order of the events that would occur until I leave this world, which wouldn't be of old age.
As a child it was strange to be dreaming of mostly the same things repetitively, as if I was living 2 lives vividly, one awake and one asleep.
I assumed it was "just a dream" day after day rather than coming to the conclusion I am having a supernatural experience being a child who wouldn't even have a clue how or why.
Around the times I was dreaming of myself in my future, as if I was experiencing my life the exact same way through my eyes in throughout time, I could see, hear, taste and even smell what I would throughout time in my dreams, but I could not feel physical pain or touch.
I could even feel my future self their his/my emotions that I would have, but due to my knowledge still with me as a child, I could not comprehend the meaning of those until I relived them again.
It was 2003 when the dreams of my future ended which could've started in the early 90s but at least I know I was by 2001 until 2003.
Because in 2001 I had moved from one country to another and saw a video game from the 90s in real life, but in my dreams I saw another advanced version of that video game series that would be created and I would get to play it decades later in the 2020.
But it's difficult for me to know when I started dreaming of the future for sure because everything seemed a bit simple in my life in dreams until it got to the year of 2017 when I saw I would have a spouse, children, hear my favorite music that would be released near the end of my life, etc.
Those things stood out to me personally, and I saw I had a name that my mother did not give me.
I saw I would be called by that name and even saw myself often writing and drawing it and I had no access to internet to check its meaning until I became an adult.
Later on, I found out the word for that name meant "I saw, I forgot."

So as a child, I knew if this truly was my future, then time can prove it to me.
But I only began to even question if it was my future by the time I was dreaming of 2017.
Because it was then that there was certain music I would hear that would not my memory,
that myself had forgotten about the dreams completely,
because as most people who have dreams, we forget them usually or at least most the details of most dreams.
I did as well.
Therfore if I did not keep records I wouldn't have remembered and I could still have been reliving my life from dreams while not knowing it.
But since I wrote down my future name, my children's names,
and even drew a symbol that would obviously prove to me that I had heard my favorite music before-
which I drew a symbol that would prove to me I did hear it before it was created,
Then I was able to recall what I had forgotten and was able to know predict the future easily day by day to where I appeared as a know it all.
But I know why I know what I know is because I've already been through it and keeping those records and seeing them come to fruition decades later has proven to be undeniable and leaving me to have no doubt.
There's far more that could be explained about this,
But I'm honestly curious if INFJs actually don't just have this alone by Ni,
but what if they have also had dreams as children that ended when they were children,
and they had forgotten their future but yet reliving their lives they are able to subconsciously know what is going to happen at times because they are reliving it and is familiar to them at times, especially after more experience with the same things they'll also be able to use it to understand things more easily.
Or if this is just my own personal experience,
And that I may be quite good at knowing what will happen often because I'm extra aware that I know at times I have the variability to predict the future because somewhere in my mind I know I will still be able to recall moments every day,
waking up every day,
knowing I am only reliving what I've already saw I would live through?
Is this my own experience?
Can INFJs truly be sure they had not just seen their own futures and had forgotten them?
Whiich seems as if it could make sense having Si as our demon.
