My chest grow immensely when I start to take push up more seriously. By doing push ups and archer push ups all along with normal bench press and incline press , the benefits are unparalleled.
@@its_biles ...in certain instances, for specific muscle activation. It's not as simple as "this is the overall best" exercise to always perform. That's a noob way of thinking.
Resistance is resistance. The only thing we need to build muscle is muscle fatigue. It can be achieved with training to failure or close to failure regardless of rep range. we don't need bench press to build chest upto full potential.
Ring Push Ups and Deficit Push Ups off plyo boxes have been game changers for chest hypertrophy due to their extra ROM. Even with the deep stretch, shoulders still feel great too.
Bench press and dumbell press are still way better exercises is hypertrophy is your goal. Ring push ups are great too but it is harder to give your max strenght due to stability issues
Yeah not going to disagree there. Easier to progress and the better stability helps with really tiring out those pec muscles. Plus I have found the two calisthenics exercises I mentioned to be more exhausting due to the added core demands. Still though, they are nice change of pace from weights and the added ROM on both of them still gives a great stretch in the pecs.@@hl3616
They're different exercises. If you need to press heavy weights for some reason, go for bench. If you're working towards harder calisthenics skills, go for pushups. If you're trying to build muscle, try both.
I mainly do body weight as I have no reason to bulk up and my main goal is a strong heart, I Row 40 minutes a day then usually just rely on pushups which I use the sally up routine for, and I don't have loads of muscle but as of now a resting heart of 42 which I'm pretty proud about 😀 pushups are just convenient and I suppose I could always strap weight on me whilst doing them if it ever came to that, I do about 300 daily 4 sets of 50 and 3 x sally up challenge💪
Greatly appreciate how you present this. I’ve got different goals, but you elucidated the difference so well, that you gave me good information and allowed me to realize the what and why. Thank you
What do you think about banded push ups? I do ring push ups with like 5-6 bands (quite heavy resistance), I think they are also a very great way to progress instead of doing bench press. The strength curve is very similar.
I used to do barbell bench press for years. I got to the point where i was benching 120kg for 2x with 80ish kg. Never felt my chest but i got stronger on it. But with push ups i can feel my chest lot better doing push ups on dumbbells for more ROM is so much better than doing barbell bench press. Also i can move my scapula which feels so good on push ups. Also its easy to progress on it, just put plates on your back and you are good to go. Unless you are too strong. Because doing push ups with a 20kg on your scapula can be really challenging
Weighted pushups now feels better for me compared to normal barbell/dumbbell presses. But of course there always have to be a balance to avoid minimalism and dogma mindset. For barbell variations, I like the barbell Larsen press and incline dumbbell presses because I can't feel the upper chest with normal decline pushups. If I'm on a vacation and don't have access to normal gym equipment, pushups and dips are the key
I do both and like both but if I had to choose it would be push up’s because you can do them anywhere and when it’s too easy do one arm push-ups then do slower reps when that’s easy
both are great.. especially if you are following proper execution... I grew my arms and chest using push ups and I use the power of muscle contraction or muscle activation...
Bench press is amazing but push ups are so underrated I developed a lot of strength using bench press but I gain a lot of muscle on my chest doing push ups!
Bench press is better. Period. Im ~260lbs. I've been training powerlifting as a bench specialist for about 11 months and currently bench 420 lb. And i bench exclusively on a Smith machine which is inferior to a barbell bench. A couple months ago I tested how many push-ups I could do and I did over a hundred. There's no argument that you can make that push-ups are better in any regard than bench pressing if a person who's never even trained in calisthenics can progress more in less than a year than 99.9% of people who actually train calisthenics. Especially when you factor in my weight. If you disagree please show me the calisthenics athlete that trained for one year and benched 420 lb. They dont exist because the the variables at your disposal to progressively overload in calisthenics are ridiculously inferior to powerlifting. Ill give props to pullups though. They are probably the best exercise for pulling strength out there especially when they're weighted.
For powerlifting, but not necessarily for bodybuilding or other types of “fitness”. “Benching” on a smitty isn’t really benching. Herschel Walker, but that’s super rare. If your goal is chest pressing strength, not everyone’s is, then Bench Press is superior. I quit benching due to shoulder issues, moved to exclusively controlled dips and my chest grew 1 inch around. I am absolutely weaker on bench, but I got “bigger”. This could also be attributed to better sleep and or nutrition, more lat work. Etc.
Barbell Benchpress is a trash exercise. Zero range of motion, tricep dominant, no shoulder or chest stretch. 99% of people who benchpress all the time with a barbell have deliberating shoulder pain they have to do 35 minutes of warm-up just to get through.
Which one do you prefer?
Push ups is the winner everytime 💯💯💯

I prrfer pushups I have imbalances when benchpressing which is very annoying

dumbell press > push ups > dips > bench press.
Ring push ups >>>

@@dreadroberts5627 keep doing bench press then, i don't Care Bro
Tbh if u want to grow ur chest do both but the good thing is that pushups can be done anywhere unlike bench press
The perfect routine is association of both, weight lifting + calisthenics. Personally, I prefer doing Push-Up and use weighted vest.

Oh, so that's why all pro body builders and power lifters avoid bench press. smh
Phew, if only more people only understood that mixing the two together is best of both worlds!

You can do weighted press ups...
I mean thats why i really love the weighted ring push up.

How can the pushup position best be modified to hit the upper chest comparable to the inclined bench press?
Pike push ups and pseudo planche push ups both hit upper chest hard
Elevate feet.
Decline pushups
What do you think about banded push ups? I do ring push ups with like 5-6 bands (quite heavy resistance), I think they are also a very great way to progress instead of doing bench press. The strength curve is very similar.
I like both and I train both.
One finger arch pushups 😮😮
You can add weights to push ups to equal bench press
Prefer weighted pushups

You could put on weights during push-ups to increase difficulty

Funny noone talks about elastic banded/weighted pushups
Do it all
I do both and like both but if I had to choose it would be push up’s because you can do them anywhere and when it’s too easy do one arm push-ups then do slower reps when that’s easy
Just try a set of Weighted ring Pushups and tell me what you felt after that.

Meanwhile, AthleanX- "Stop doing push ups"😢
I would love to add bench press to my workout but is always full of people
Not gonna lie , I love push ups
Both :)
Bench press is amazing but push ups are so underrated I developed a lot of strength using bench press but I gain a lot of muscle on my chest doing push ups!
Full body muscle activation is more important for me
I do both in chest day.
I used to bench press but now I do pushups and dumbell press for chest
And dumbell flys
Push ups must be mastered before doing bench press.
Dumbbell bench press is the winner
I have no weights sooooo calisthenics it is then
Obviously the bench press is more precise, but push ups can do it anywhere
My chest grow on Full stretch and High volume so Deficit pushups and Rings are here to stay. Good bye Incline 😢
I just prefer push ups for the fact I need no weights/gym

Do them weighted with feet on a bench and use some pushup handles with fat grips, go as far down as you can. Feels amazing
