If you have plateaued on your bench press, and at the same time you realize you are weak on push ups, start increasing push up repetitions. Push ups alone won't increase bench. So, no it doesn't replace bench. However, a combination of slow twitch muscle fibers and fast twitch muscle fibers will not only help you get stronger, but you'll get larger too! Also, changing your bench press reps from low reps to 8-12 reps will help you break through your plateau. Keep in mind that low to mid reps is always what makes you bigger. Overall time, muscles will adapt to low reps. So, you will need to challenge them doing higher reps so that you can continue to get stronger and bigger. Doing pushups on days you don't bench will be good for you.
I just tried this method today during my session. I feel it can help break through mini plateaus on the bench. Prior to adding this, I hit 230 for 15 reps. So I decided to super-set bench with push ups. Now I can get 20 reps in. May not seem like much of a increase, but it's an increase none the less.
Anybody who says push ups don't increase your bench press doesn't know what they're talking about. I only do push ups and currently bench 275 lbs and counting. I stopped weight training a long time ago because of family priorities. Because I still wanted to be strong, I decided to do short but intense 10 minute workouts (as I intensify my work outs I actually spend more around 5 minutes doing them). I do push ups rotating with sit ups one day, pull ups the next, then I rest on Saturdays. My bench only keeps improving.
How did you attain that kind of strength precisely? 100 push ups a day divided into sets? I currently am only able to bench 132 for 10 reps and maybe 150-160 for 1 rep max. If i dont bench at all and just do different types of push ups, 100-200 per day how long can I expect before I can bench 275? I am beginner again because I haven't trained in years.
@k1003944 I don't know if you read my last post or not, but I sent accidentally sent it before I was ready to. When I wrote that post 2 years ago, I was doing push-ups actually less efficiently. Yes, my goal was 100 push-ups in 10 minutes. If you can't do 100 in 10 minutes, try 80 or 60, then work your way to 100. I did do sets. I started out not having worked out for some years, so I did 20 push-ups every 2 minutes. Use a timer, like on your phone. When I graduated from 20 every 2 minutes, I pushed up to 25 every 2 minutes and completed 100 push-ups in 8 minutes instead of 10. I wanted to keep intensifying the work-out because that's the only way to get stronger, so once I completed 25 every 2 minutes, I took 1 push-up from the last set, and added it onto my first set. So, I was still doing 100 push-ups in less than 8 minutes, and it looked like this: 1st set - Start timer, do 26 push-ups, rest the remainder of time to start my next set at 2 minutes 2nd set - do 25 push-ups, rest until the 4 minute mark 3rd set - do 25 push-ups, rest until the 6 minute mark 4th set - do 24 push-ups, done I kept doing that until I was only doing a few sets and spending less than 5 minutes doing push-ups. Eventually, my rests became very brief, and I just wanted to do 100 push-ups before like the 2 1/2 minute mark. I didn't worry about my diet, except I wanted to include lots of protein. I consumed about around 200g a day (more than I needed). Find how many push-ups you can do at once. If you can only do 20, then try sets of 10. You'll probably have to do some experimentation until you figure out what your initial goal should be, whether it's a completion of 60 push-ups or what. I chose 100 push-ups because I knew it was something I could probably do. If you like numbers and seeing progression on paper, that's one way to do it. But the new way I work out is I do as many push-ups in a row until failure as I can, meaning I can't do another push-up. I rest for 4 minutes, do another set, wait 3 minutes, do another set, wait 2 minutes, do another set, wait 1 minute, and then do one last set. All the sets are done until failure. The reason I do that now is because I hit a plateau with the other work-out, and I knew I wasn't going until failure very much. My only goal was to complete 100 push-ups in as quickly of time as possible. Now, I don't care about reps, but going as hard as I can. The reason I take different rests is because I'm trying to increase my size and trim. Don't know if you've heard, but resting for longer periods increases your size and strength while shorter rests increases your trim and endurance. So I decided to do both. I take about 12 minutes to complete my work-out now as opposed to around 3 minutes, but 12 minutes, of course, is still quick, and when I get done, both my wife and I notice that I look bigger and more cut than I used to when I'd get done. I apply this same principle to pull-ups.
@k1003944 If you've trained before, it'll be easy to get the strength you had before you stopped training. I can't tell you how long it'll take you to bench 275. I'm 6'1", so depending on your height, you could get there slower or quicker than I did. I think it took me only about a year to get there though from when I started.

That is the proper form for powerlifting and it takes training to get there (rolling on a ball or tube), it also prevents shoulder injuries found in flat back bench training. Flat back is more for body building not powerlifting that said it is recommended to have a slight arch and properly rotated shoulder blades when doing bench to prevent rotator cuff and other shoulder injuries that are very common. Your body can handle more pushups than bench reps no matter how strong you are. More reps equals more strength and more endurance, it won't make you stronger, as in being able to jump to another plate, but it will increase your rep count by a few at least.

Possibly, but usually you need to practice what you're trying to get better at to be better. Like the more you bench the better you will be at it. But I agree, doing push-ups will help a little.
that might be true for beginners since they are lifting wights which are not very far from their own body weights but once you start lifting double your own body weight pushups wont help you getting any further you need to discover another way to strengthening your front deltoids and upper triceps to give them more explosive power also , the type of the muscle you are developing through pushups might not be the same type you need to perform One Rep Max in bench press

Interesting question however my honest response to that is to attack push ups the same as you would any strength exercise and work in reps and sets to failure. I know several people who have a lower failure when doing bench press but are able to do crazy amounts of push ups.
that guy at the beginning in the white tshirt, i've never seen such bad posture on a bench. keep your back flat, it concentrates on the pectoral major much more. arching your back like that too will have negative results when you grow older!

@mymusic, doing 100 pushups in a row does nothing for you other than hey I can 100 pushups. That would be like saying I can do 50 rep on the bench and call it a day, that's not how muscles work. You need to make it harder for your muscles if you want to get stronger, congrats on the 200% though.

Your body can handle more pushups than bench reps no matter how strong you are. More reps equals more strength and more endurance, it won't make you stronger, as in being able to jump to another plate, but it will increase your rep count by a few at least.

Your coworkers were right to laugh
can we get tips for those of us that are shoulder/triceps dominant
sweet! thanks for sharing, didn't know! something they didn't teach us in university haha
I lift weights 3 days a week and on the other 4 days I do pushups
#BEASTMODE
@@Criticalbench not really beat mode I'm 45 years old and i have been stuck at a 225 pound bench press for 12 to 16 reps for awhile, but I did not start lifting weights until I was 42 years old and when I first started I could only bench 175 pounds for 1 rep and my body weight is around 205 pounds. So no beast mode for me lol.😁
Gary Sharp i wish i could bench 225 ...i cant Progress in bench
@@garysharp8871 thats nfl level youre good
Thanks for the help
Happy to help
what if your chest is the wea point im shoulder dominant
I’m 400lbs, so doing push ups really helps with my bench press. Just need to work harder and smarter
i do the max 400 to over 500 pushups a day would that even help me get better at use in the bench press ?
Possibly, but usually you need to practice what you're trying to get better at to be better. Like the more you bench the better you will be at it. But I agree, doing push-ups will help a little.
@@Criticalbench thanks for the advice sir
that might be true for beginners since they are lifting wights which are not very far from their own body weights
but once you start lifting double your own body weight pushups wont help you getting any further
you need to discover another way to strengthening your front deltoids and upper triceps to give them more explosive power
also , the type of the muscle you are developing through pushups might not be the same type you need to perform One Rep Max in bench press
mymusicism you're telling me that doing pushups while wearing a heavy weight vest won't help? Seriously?
I do 200-500 pushups a day 100-200 pullups as well
Did it increase my bench press yesss!!!!!
I stopped lifting weights and at first I could only bench press 225 for 6 reps now I can do 225 for 17 reps
Whenever I have time instead of just pushups I will include dips
I don't like making excuses I have a 9-5 office jobs in sales I installed a pull up bar
And I do pushups there
You are strong i do 500 to 2000 pushups a day pullups my max is 115 in 10 sets
My coworkers laughed when I told them I would get ripped with "Smashing Ripped X", but then they saw the results. Google Smashing Ripped X to see their reaction.
powerlifting form bro
If my bodyweight is 150+ 145+ and my bench press max is 185lbs how many pushups should I do a day to equivalent that of my bench press?
Interesting question however my honest response to that is to attack push ups the same as you would any strength exercise and work in reps and sets to failure. I know several people who have a lower failure when doing bench press but are able to do crazy amounts of push ups.
Thank
You bet!
tell me more mr olympia
that guy at the beginning in the white tshirt, i've never seen such bad posture on a bench. keep your back flat, it concentrates on the pectoral major much more. arching your back like that too will have negative results when you grow older!
Yes it cane after lock down of covid19 I only did pushs up and was able bench press 165 after going back when repon now I cane bench press 195 covid19 help increase my work outs lol tbh
Hell yah they increase your bench 3 months ago I could only do 23 push ups in one set and now I can do 175 pushups in one set and my bench one rep max went from 195 to being able to rep that 6 times !!!!
Wow! Keep it up, C A 💪
strong tip
@mymusic, doing 100 pushups in a row does nothing for you other than hey I can 100 pushups. That would be like saying I can do 50 rep on the bench and call it a day, that's not how muscles work. You need to make it harder for your muscles if you want to get stronger, congrats on the 200% though.
Cool!
ha yea right
Jesus Christ is coming back soon so believe on his name and be saved from hell before it’s eternally too late if you haven’t already
