Building my Sister her First Mountain Bike (and testing it)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 11 тра 2023
- If you remember my old Trek Hardtail, you might remember that I gave it to my sister. Well, I have another sister, and she recently asked me for a mountain bike recommendation. Let's build her one!
I used a Diamondback Sync'r Pro alloy frame, which we had converted into a single speed and used for various experiments. This bike was also my daily rider at one point, and had seen a lot of action.

"I wanna make it cool. I wanna make it personal. I wanna make it a business expense." Ha! Good on-ya for helping out how you can! Being a good brother!
The auditors can see this video as proof!
Oh the shenanigans!
It's not a business expense
@@RealMTBAddictit’s literally money spent for a video(his business). This is a cut and dry business expense.
@@yaboi3702 it's a gift.
For someone who doesn't seem to like to paint, Seth does a pretty damn good job painting frames lol
With the new house, new garage, 3D printer, mud room, etc? I'm sure Seth is starting to come around to painting lol
Best way to avoid painting is doing it correct the first time!
seriously a kick ass paint job. love the purple blue two tone
@@devincrighton4376 good yes, kick ass nah man
Nice color choice! I literally just used the same color on my sons bike a couple of weeks ago. Only suggestion I would have is to also use a clear coat to protect the paint from chipping especially a mountain bike.
Hey Seth wet sanding works better because the water is acting as a lubricant, so it’s less abrasive than dry sanding, and results in a smoother finish
😮
The water carries the dust out of the paper keeping the spaces between the grit clean. Makes for faster and smoother sanding.
@@dakshrokadia_MTB sanding paint dry clogs up the paper too bad.
it also allows the swarf (bits that the sandpaper removes) of the cured paint to act as an abrasive.
Adding just a dab of soap to the water works wonders
I work in a bike shop and the comment about how dropper posts work just office chairs is something I'm definitely going to use to explain how they work. Thank you.
I’ve used that was to describe them for a few years and I’ve never heard someone else say it
Watching your videos gave me the knowledge and confidence to fix, adjust and clean my parent's bikes as well as my sister's. I may not have the proper setup to true wheels, but I could make do with the brake pads and a ziptie and when they brought it to a bike shop, apparently, they were told there was not much to do with the bike. I discovered your channel in May this year when I was looking for a review for the Trek Marlin 5 and stumbled upon your flip bike for the 29er. I then proceeded to watch almost all of your videos just because of all the high quality content you make.
You keep saying you hope we learn something or at least find your videos entertaining. Let me tell you: it's always both.
Thanks Seth.
Same here,bro.
Keep waiting for a new video.
I don't know why... but the video just soothingly makes me relax,,,
As someone who bought a marlin 5 recently it rides nicely out of the box. Mine does need minor adjustments on the front derailleur but I am not concerned about it because I will be switching it out to a 1x drivetrain in the next few months. Also the saddle is not right for my butt major soreness after the first multi hour ride.
Sanding or sharpening with water makes it so the particulate coming off forms a slurry that helps with getting between the cracks/bumps of the surface (i think)
it also stops you from huffing paint.
Why do we often lubricate band saws, press drills, lathe's and equivalent metal working devices? Because the lubrication helps with -> preventing clogging by removing particles, aid with cooling and in some cases the slurry is indeed also abrasive.
If you wet sand with a more coarse paper it will be a more abrasive slurry because the particles will be bigger. The water will also de-clog the sandpaper more easily.
The biggest benefit of wet-sanding is therefore being able to use a really fine grid without it clogging up immediately.
I think...
@@MarvinWestmaas Nah, you got it
@@MarvinWestmaas and also those big particles clogging up the sand paper can cause it to be more abrasive with deeper grooves which you might not be able to buff out later - for paint that is.
Intuitively it feels like that's what's happening.
Great build. Your daughter clearly has an eye for color! It’s killer looking. Would you do a parts value breakdown of it similar to what you do for flip bike videos?
Copper or brass would have been far better, as he showed right before using the purple. It needed some contrast.
Sorry. I'm brutally honest.
That paintjob is actually amazing
Right? Actually surprising how good that looks. Need to find something to paint like this
Loic Bruni had that paint in 2017ish? Specialized used it for 2018-2019 models. Had it on my old Stumpy, it's better in person!
I want to know what color that is? Anyone know?
@michaelmay9728 it's in the video..purple blue shift..
As someone who switched to a SRAM 1x11 from a MicroShift 1x9, I can totally see the allure of the Advent setup. I have to adjust the SRAM every so often, but the MicroShift seemed to just stay put and was rock solid in operation the whole time it was on the bike. If you want simple and reliable the Advent 9 or 10 is amazing (not to mention inexpensive).
Nice job Seth! That color reminds me of my wife’s Liv Intrigue with the chameleon galaxy paint, love the color shift. I’m 100% confident your sister will be blown away by your efforts. I’d love to see a video of you and your sister going for a ride together.
Always good to go with the advice from your daughter. 🙌
That paint looks sick!! Hope to see more of it in the future Seth!! And that bike deserves to be ridden rather than sitting in a storage unit. Great video though!!
We probably won't see it and won't be in his unit he said he's sending it to his sister.
@@brandonwilson7651 He meant the paint
Perfect timing, quiet night at work. Much Love from Down under Seth.
I love how you kept this build battery free. Im sure your sis really appreciated that ❤
That paint job is fabulous! Great job Seth! Your sister is so lucky!
Not one to normally comment, but this deserves one. 100% think that the build you did is perfect, that 9spd Microshift drivetrain, CST BFT tyres, Shimano Brakes all super good, super reliable, your sister will be stoked. Oh also love the colour shift paint, so sweet.
Do you know what chain did he use?
@@chorito1 far as I can tell it's a KMC X10, a lower end one.
Purple was definitely the correct accent color! Bike looks great!
A mountainbiker will do everything to get their siblings in the sport! That's the true spirit! Great video!
That's a wicked bike!
I hope you start the flip bike series again, that was fun to watch.
Ahhh I remember it well when Seth got that Sync'r and retired the trusty Trek 4900. The 360 on that step up at the start of this video is iconic folks!
The spray-on automotive clear coat you briefly showed is AMAZING. I've used it for so many things. looks great and gives insane protection. I've even used it to clear coat custom videogame controllers for friends. I shoulda known that was what you use too
Hey Seth! To answer your question about wet sanding. To my knowledge adding water while sanding helps lower the temperature caused by the friction of the sandpaper. Dry sanding builds up a lot more heat and can actually melt the clear coat and create burn marks.
If you want to step up your paint job game you can try lightly wet sanding after the clear coat with 1000 grit followed by an automotive polish. Now that would really give it a glassy finish.
Great job on the content. I can't wait for more flip bikes!
I still remember his old videos back when he used to live in florida, and he torture tested a mongoose bike from Walmart ad his sister (Emily) was riding the og trek 4900, those were some good days 😄
Seth, I need to thank you. After watching your videos for a while I started looking for mountain bikes on eBay. Eventually, I found one for very cheap which was exactly the same model of the bike that was stolen from me 8 years ago, and I knew I had to get it right away. Better yet, the bike was in good condition but was clearly overdue for maintenance. I spent an entire weekend fixing the bike and replacing some parts, and you wouldn’t believe how happy I was to get my old bike back in perfectly working condition. I don’t really do a lot of mountain biking, but I like to go for bike rides in the evening while listening to a podcast and hitting a few obstacles like stairs and small jumps around my neighbourhood. It’s a new habit that I’m trying to build that adds a lot of value to my days. Thank you for inspiring me to get back a piece of my childhood that was taken away from me a long time ago.
I learned that you are really good at what you do, Seth. Both making video content and building bikes. I always learn something and I'm always entertained. Thank you.
Wet sanding is common on high grit paper, because the sand paper will load up too quickly, and stop actually sanding if it is dry. The water helps carry whatever your sanding, out of the grit of the paper.
Got my baptism of MTB 2 days ago and absolutely liked my evening. I proceed with the easiest trail then a fast one with nice little berm (did 3 nice run on it) then just went for a higher level one, of course I did avoid the drop and mostly pumped the jumps at the beginning but I started getting some height after a couple ones and took the berm like a champ. I will definitely work hard to get to a good level and build more confidence in my riding. Thanks for all the advices you gave through your videos and as a mechanic, you're a reference for certain hacks that I use myself personnally. Continue your great work and continue sending it like you're used to !
an actually sensible build, good job Seth.
That's awesome, seth your makeing your sis happy and geting someone new on the trail 🎉
Still the best Bicycling channel on youtube, been watching your channel since the Seth Bike Hack days.Well done!!!!
Great job Seth, paint job is excellent. Only thing missing is a Berm Peak emblem or at least sticker on the frame, be proud of your build. Great Video.
Awesome build 👏 have a good day!
Hey Seth really loved this video! The attention to the build and the lessons at the end. Keep it up!
That paint looks amazing
Wow. You have a great bike workshop. Hope your sister liked her new bike.
I believe the water used when wet sanding acts as a lubricant and helps evacuate the particles of paint from your sandpaper. So, it prevents your sandpaper from clogging up so that the sand can be more effective when cutting through the paint, while also lubricating it and making it a bit easier to sand.
I think it also evens the sanding because the particulates are dispersed in the water
@@jacobrick6515 Yep, I agree. Preventing build up on the sandpaper naturally evens the sanding since you don't have high spots on the sandpaper.
I've been following Seth's videos since way back in Florida and boy, has this guy evolved. From a nerdy car stereo fitter to a professional storyteller, bike mechanic, trail builder, businessman and the doer of good deeds. The most honest and straight forward guy I know in mountain bike business. If you get an advice from Seth or from his videos, you shouldn't get second thoughts, that's the best advice you can get, period. And helping others along the way, no matter if they are siblings or just random active people, that's so cool to see. Seth, you're doing all the right stuff, keep doing it!
I love that Seth can make things like this into a video for us to watch
Seth- another possible tip for your sister: is that a push shifter? Where you use your thumb to shift both up and down (vs the pointer finger on the other side of the grip).
the murder machine video was the one when i got to about this channel during covid and got me into MTB's
great to see how much you have grown now, murder machine will be missed
I have missed this type of vid. so nostalgic back to those og Seths bike hacks vids. love it!
Man i still remember the Videos of your old trek with your other sister back in FL like it was yesterday ! how time flies.
Painted an old Trek 24" bike with that colorshift paint for my daughter, and she got compliments wvery time we had it out at the trails.
She chose purple for all the hardware on it also.
We also ordered purple Trek decals for the headrube and downtube. It was so subtle, in certain light, you didn't notice them.
Cool build!
Wow what a trip down memory lane I remember when you posted that murder machine video and it was the reason I stared loving the “hardcore hardtail” scene. Sad to see it go but at least it’s going somewhere great!
That paint job is really cool.
Always entertaining, often informative and always a pleasure.
super nicely pulled together. Nice job Seth
Imaging calling your brother for help with a bike, and its Seth!! How amazing!
Congrats on that bike, from all bikes you work on, this is my favorite, that frame Paint, wat a DaVinci 😎 true artist.
Great choice with the Ergon saddle and grips!
The bike came out absolutely awesome and what a great thing to build a bike like that for your sister
Oh man! A piece of Berm Peak history is coming to California! 🤙
I never thought of using a cheap pop-up tent for painting in my garage too. That's a great idea.
Wow, you did a banger job on the paint! Nice!!
Sad to see it go. Hope to see it on the channel again!
I love that you had your advertising in such a way that you can still recommend parts from them after you have ended your partnership with them.
You are such an honest guy :)
And you make so great content :)
Thanks :)
This is awesome. I specially like that you went to the color expert fo advice.
I love your attention to detail, quality and practicality. Acts of Love are always to be encouraged :)
Thank you. It was great that you kept it in the family. Please stay safe.
No Berm Peak sticker??!? Fur reelz? Awesome build, especially the paint job - looks awesome.
Really nice job Seth your sis will super pumped.
good call on the micro shift. underrated kit right there.
Damn, the paint job on that frame looks sick, man! Good job!
That color shift paint is SICK!
I sure love the color!
The wet sanding is so good becouse it makes tiny scraches in your bike and the paint can easily cover them and it can also stick on the frame very well
Hi Seth. Here is explanation in short. Wet sanding works because water or any other liqiud keeps sandpaper from being clogged. also particles (ussually sanded paint) becomes abrasive together with sandpaper and its microscratching the surface, creating even but relativelly porous surface, which is best for adhesion of new paint. Great video as usual.
Hell yeah! I have the same Microshift drive train on my bike and it ROCKS. 9 speed is all I need for what I do and it rarely ever needs adjusting- I'm talking like at most once per year.
I love your build videos! I really miss the flip bike section, please make them more often!
Your daughter was right on the money with the purple accents
I didn't know you had a sister! She will be so happy with the bike. Great thing you did for her!
This guys garage is a literal cycling heaven
It's so beautiful, and awesome, I really love purple blue color shift paint!
Your PROPER use of the word "literally" at around 3:20 just reminded me why I'm a subscriber.
I can't thank you enough.
Great vid as always brother - see ya on the trails !
Loving the frame color"s". Great choice!
2:55 the bin full of ?how many? dropper posts is a great bike-guy flex. Love you, Seth!
Love the ethos and the videos, thanks for making them. 👍 colour looks great btw, reminds me of a 90’s TVR
Nice job you did on that bike Seth. Using that tent as a paint booth was brilliant!
That colour is gorgeous!
Seth great stuff mate,im certain your sister will absolutely love it.Nice bike.
From Murder Machine to Purple Machine. Love it.
really nice build keep up the work
Props on the paint. That's sick!
Thats a solid looking ride!!! love the videos Seth :D
Bike came out awesome!!! You are a great brother and so glad that beauty is going to a good home to be enjoyed as it should. New subscriber here😎
I could watch your videos all day! So much for mountain biking today 😂
The paint on this is just breathtaking 🙏🏼
What a great job! The bike looks excellent.
Seth , I'm only 1/2 way thru this and I'm sure your sister is going to love her new bike , she's got a cool brother , Seth , your cool
Remember her from ur old Florida vids, glad to see she's got her own bike now
Your Channel is awesome! You inspired me to go Mountain biking.
Seth,absolutely perfect job,thanks
Sweet build.
You should try VHS 2.0 chain stay protector. It has knobs with air pockets, so they dampen the noise. but it will do a great job at protecting the chain stay, and keep the noise down. it's secured by 3M VHB adhesive, so it's gonna stay put for a long time.
What an amazing build !!!! just love it!!!!
Love your paint tent!!
I love the closing montage throwback
Crazy paintjob! Like it a lot!
Dudes a wizard, I swear. I love that he has all those parts.
Awesome paint job 🔥
