      There’s a lot more contention too. I felt like it was super easy when it comes to the heroes. Spidey, Superman and Batman are not up for debate. The fourth one is up to you. I’m seeing different lists by everyone here. The only constant seems to be the Joker, rightly so

    • @tananatana4011

      Honestly I feel like Joker, Lex Luthor, Doctor Doom and Magneto is pretty definitively the correct list, I can't think of anyone else who could take anyone else's place here.
      The heroes MT whilst yes, it has a defined 3 quarters undoubtedly with Superman, Batman and Spider-Man, the fourth place is actually decently up for a debate, with Wolverine, Hulk, Flash, Wonder Woman, Captain America, you can make a pretty solid case for any of them. I can't envision an argument to get rid of any of those villains

    A great villain needs to be the perfect foil for the hero, the ying to his yang. Lex Luthor, who started out as your stereotypical mad scientist of the 30s pulps, has grown into the perfect foil for Superman, the polar opposite of him in many respects. Brain versus brawn. Merely human versus super human. Wealthy urbanite versus working class farm boy. Corruption versus incorruptibility. Egomania versus humble selflessness. Powerful elite versus journalist whose job is to expose the powerful elite. I could go on and on. And I love how Lex resents Superman's very existence as a kind of insult to human achievement, the kind of achievement Lex has exemplified. So, there's a psychological component to their rivalry. It's the perfect pairing of villain and hero.

    • @tananatana4011
      @tananatana4011 5 місяців тому +19

      Exactly, Superman represents hope, better tomorrow, but Lex is someone who completely misinterprets that lection. I always liked that Lex isn't overly cartoony egoistic and up his own ass, like Lex DOES genuinely respect other people, even if they're better than him in some way, because he appreciated and respects, to put it simply "the grind", no matter how much would he love to be number 1. Superman irritates him because it's a spit to the face, having someone who is automatically better than everyone BY DEFAULT? It's like a joke.
      Honestly Batman vs Joker and Superman vs Lex Luthor are such lighting in the bottle type rivalries, I can't BELIEVE DC nailed those two so well, easily my favorite rivalries in comic history

    Personally I would put Deathstroke in over Ra’s Al Guhl for the Bronze Age. The Judas Contract is often considered one of the best storylines in DC Comics history and cemented Deathstroke’s reputation as one of the most iconic DC villains. That’s not to say Ra’s never had great stories, but none of them have stood the rest of time to be adapted multiple times.

    • @billyboleson2830
      @billyboleson2830 5 місяців тому +18

      Ra’s pretty much peaked back then and then that’s really it outside of Batman begins making him more popular. He’s a product of when Batman was more “James bond esque” where as deathstroke is still MASSIVELY popular especially since Arkham origins … in fact I honestly think he’s too overused now

    • @FriendlyBatDoom
      @FriendlyBatDoom 5 місяців тому +12

      But that's the thing Deathstroke was too limited by the fact that he fought 13-year-olds. Ra's was always tested by the best of the best in Batman until he was kinda ruined by Arrow CW and TMNT/Batman.

    1) It's sort of funny that for like, half a century The Penguin was probably more known to the public than any villain outside the Joker or Luthor.
    2) I think if you split up the modern age further, the Green Goblin would have missed a Rushmore spot. Osborn was "dead" for more than twenty years, those twenty years being some of the most lucrative for the comic book industry. While his legacy was felt (See: Hobgoblin) I think he owed his renaissance to the "back to basics" mentality that happened in the wake of Kurt Busiek's and Alex Ross's MARVELS.
    3) When I was growing up, Sabretooth was sort of a bigger deal than Mystique. I think the movies definitely raised her profile, I also think it was the rise of the Gay Rights movement, where she was the one who most represented the X-Men's queer parallels.
    4) It's funny, Thanos feels like he's an outsized impact due to the movies (And seriously, he's sort of become a verb in the larger popular consciousness) but because the X-Men and Spider-Man "silos" were more high profile, you forget he wasn't exactly asleep at the wheel. He got to be in the cartoons, he got to be a final boss in video games, I think he might even be the only Marvel villain to get a card in every single Marvel wide series (Except for maybe Venom, who you disqualified).

    Honestly, some villains fit other heroes better, imo. Imagine if Galactus was the one who destroyed Krypton, or that Kingpin controls Gotham's surface just as Penguin rules underneath the city like in Batman Returns. Lex Luthor is iconic, but I've always felt that Superman constantly had to be nerfed (especially his intelligence) in order maintain their rivalry. Flash's rogues gallery has been praised for its variety, but most of them are quite random in my eyes. TMNT villains, on the other hand, are underrated. And perhaps there's too much team switching in X-Men.

    Good all Time list. I think Thanos would be on on my list solely due to the MCU. He was the most hyped up villains of any comic movie, and was practically the main character of infinity war. Infinity war and endgame were also some of the highest grossing films too. Not only that, but the infinity war storyline back in the day was pretty big and I feel like after infinity war, he got put more into the spotlight in the comics. And now that Kang ( or probably doom at this point) is going to be the big bad of the mcu, I hear a lot of people expecting a lot from them is since thanos set the bar so high.

    • @MasterTemplar781
      @MasterTemplar781 5 місяців тому +4

      I wouldn't say the infinity war was pretty big back in the day. It was a pretty forgetable comic. Mostly because Nebula just grabbed the gauntlet and killed thanos like it was nothing. But the film version made him more popular. Before the movies Thanos wasn't as popular as other villains. He only peaked in popularity when the MCU arrived and his small appearance in 2012's Avengers. That's when his popularity started to grow. So his impact right now on media didn't even really start in 2012's Avengers but i'll say that anyways meaning that Thanos peaked over the past 12 years. Which truly doesn't keep up with people like Joker who've been popular for like 50+ years. He doesn't make it on the list.

When Morlun shows up you know that Spidey is in for an absolutely brutal beatdown. Notable for being the first villain to successfully kill Spiderman (Doc Ock doesn't count because Peter still came back).
    Morlun is a relentless killer who doesn't even see Peter as an enemy, just another source of food for him. He's like the Terminator if he dressed in a 3 piece suit.

He might not be on the list but Green Goblin 18 out of the first 100 Spider-Man issues. These were the most common villains in each of these comics yet most of the time they do not show up. I think post-crisis there's at least three distinctive eras:
    1985-1999: Comics made a deliberate effort to tell more mature stories after being influienced by the works of writers such as Frank Miller, Alan Moore, etc. this resulted in darker and more pessimistic situations, the rise of antiheroes and specially during later years a notable focus on action and violence.
    2000-2009: Superhero media in general and not just comic books tried to become more realistic, and given the fact that cgi wasn't as advanced yet, characters tended to wear regular clothes (usually leather jackets) instead of costumes, their backstories/superpowers were considerably toned down most of the time, also making fun of old comic book tropes was a popular trend during this period.
    2010-Present???: Characterized by the dominance of nerd interests in pop culture, people started being far more accepting of fantastical elements such as aliens and magic. To reflect that the plot and costumes became more elaborate and faithful to their source, on the other hand the dialogue and characterization were exetremely focused on being relatable and down to earth.
    The last one could be divided even further if we include the shift to social justice issues and the desire to be inclusive of all demographics.
