    After owning a Mustang IIIv2 (sold now but still - I liked it) I came up with my favorite thing about good modeling amps. They give you the ability to tweak your sound with numerous pedal arrangements, cabinets, and amps. For someone who doesn't want to initially invest in a bunch of pedals it's a great way to find out what you really like before going out and buying the real thing. Novices can explore all these options without breaking the bank. In effect it's what you said - eventually you want to go buy the real thing. They serve well as a springboard to higher end gear. They also help when space is very limited.

      exactly, same with amp emulation on pc like amplitube, you have all the amps right there to experiment on a lower budget and practical but with this gtx you have that same (and more) ocean of choices without the limitations of pc emulation. You have the footswitch, the amp, invest time in setting up your sounds and use it for jamming alone or with a band, recording, silent or mic'd, very versatile for €400-€500. Sure the real deal is lovely when you figure out what you want in a setup but cumbersome and expensive.

      I completely agree.
      An alternative is buy an amp cheaper than Katana or GTX and also buy a multi effects pedal board. But the price is getting to that of a Katana/GTX...

      Um, they are so affordable now they unless you don't have space or desperate for money it's a good amp to have in your amp collection. I have one and intending to keep it. Paid £100 for it a few years ago, in mint condition.

    The real beauty of these gtx amps is that you are only a few seconds away from finding ideal sounds and effects configs that can be downloaded and used for any song you can imagine. Many folks are taking time to craft song specific settings that can be used and sequenced into a full sets of songs and they are all online for you to try. (in seconds!) Just one stomp on the switch and you can change dozens of parameters to support the next song for practice or gigging. No dinking around with many tiny dials and multiple switches between songs. Simply one click your way through an entire set list or practice sequence. I dont want it to sound like a twin reverb, peavey, marshall or vox...want it to sound like the tune I want to play and this thing does exactly that. I want to play, not fiddle fart with settings all day or in the middle of a set. Oh, and it was cheap!!! Like a couple of peadals cheap! No messing with batteries, cables, power supplies etc. Just clean.

    I think a lot of people are missing the point about modelling amplifiers - you MODEL things with these. The great thing about the Fender Mustang series is that you can virtually start from scratch and build what you want. For guitarists who are also composers this one aspect is giant. Now, that said, these amps are like a freaking swiss army knife too - they can do SO many things! And do them pretty damn well. Also, on the road they're light and very reliable, plus the direct outs work so well and when combined live in parallel with using a mic in front, the sound is really 3D and you can play small halls to very large venues. You really can't compare them to a vintage tube amp that is heavy and often very fragile and has one good sound - this is definitely no one trick pony. Yeah sure, if I'm gonna just sit on my couch in front of my amp and get THE sound, I'll probably go for an authentic tube amp (gonna be loud for the wife and neighbors though). Also they take pedals incredibly well, if you wanna go that route. These things are real work horses, but if you don't like to experiment with settings then this will NOT be your thing (I've never kept one single factory preset onboard). However, if you take the time and tweak you can get great sounds (and diverse) from these things and much more - YOUR sound with a more than acceptable tone.

      The 🎸 guitar mfgrs. At starting to put different sound options in the pots because before they scratched each other's backs by selling Pedals and 34 amps stacked on top of each other. Solid state became reality and that's cool. This way all you have to carry Is your Guitar and Amp!

      I'm currently using the VIP1 and I preordered the Spark and I'm waiting for delivery. I also like the options of playing the electric and acoustic guitar in the same amp which and with the Spark you can do your smaller recording without having to spend money on and interface. It's supposedly on its way from China.

      Yamaha came out with the THR series and they were ridiculously expensive because they had the advent of the lunchbox amps but Peavy came out with the first mod amp to play multiple instruments including bass acoustic 2 electric guitar presets and this allowed IE a LP or Strat and 129 dollars and I got one for my birthday and I was so happy. I still have it but I preordered the Spark and I'm waiting for the delivery. A modeling amp has different pedals and different amps and you can download more of these options. I don't know why they call practice amps because they are suitable for stage. I'm going to start a You Tube channel to cover all aspects where we learn ❤ together on budget guitars without modifying and Amps also. Look it up in the if your interested. I'm by no means a professional so we will learn together and and hopefully I can get enough subscribers maybe I can get donations but that's not what I'm after because it will be fun for everyone who tunes in on it. So hit the like button and hit the bell for notifications and subscribe 😆 LOL. Well you know the drill.

      We had gorilla amps to start out on. I think anyone that complains about gear now should be locked in a room with a Gorilla Amp, a Memphis guitar and a cassette player. They can get out when they figure out the song and manage to get a somewhat less than garbage sound.

    Thanks Ryan for your two cents worth and demo through the presets on this amp, great for the money, a starter or someone who can’t be carrying a tube amp, if your happy to spend time tweaking and developing your own tones and presets you can do a hell of a lot with these amps.
    I still use my Mustang 3 with a Princeton as a stereo setup, run my pedals through the Princeton and use various basic personal patches from my Mustang 3 doing the modulations, verbs and delays as well, I love my overall tone and sound created using as stereo amps, it has a lovely warmth, depth, overall fullness when used like this. It really works for me in my band setup, I’m happy and sounds so full and didn’t cost me a fortune, there are endless capabilities until one day maybe I’ll be able to afford to get a 65 Twin??? I’ll probably always just keep hold of the Mustang 3 as so useful for practice, tons of effects variations and sounds really great paired with another amp that’s driving and running your pedals through.

    I hope Fender reads the comments in your channel so they know its worth sending you gear. I trust your reviews/opinion when it comes to guitars/amps/gear. I've been watching you on and off for over a year now. Thank you for this very in depth review. I went out and ordered this from Sweetwater, it arrives tomorrow! As someone who lives in a 100 year old house with bad wiring and of course LED bulbs in every room and dimmer switches in most rooms I can't use a pedal board without excessive noise. As much as I want to be a tube amp player with boutique pedals. I'm a bedroom player only and having the FX built into the amp and the ability to line out to my PC is what I need. Thanks for all you do.

    You really went through a lot of settings. The gain sounds messy, as most digital modeling amps do, but some of the other tones were fantastic. It didn't quite get the tones of a Deluxe Reverb, but it would be great fun for a practice amp. Even though I may sound negative, your video honestly sold me on one. I will be getting one of these!

    One of the things that really makes this amp shine is sending it out in stereo to speakers. It sounds incredible. You really don't need another amp or pedals if you have this dialed in and know what you are doing. YES! YES! YES! The footswitch is everything to me. Probably use about 5 or 6 presets when playing a gig. I need the control under my foot. And it comes “free” ish with the amp. Wake up other manufacturers. Great demo. Love the honesty. PS. When you’ve finished with it, can you pop it over to me in the UK. Cheers.

    Lolol a Bassman with an outboard reverb is a perfect surf setup very similar sounding to a Dual Showman. Sometimes you say Show Man and sometimes you say Showman. I wonder how the direct outs sound. Could be a perfect gigging up. You’re my favorite demo guy because you like those surf tones.

    Good review Ryan thanks, yep presets are usually rather dodgy sounding, but if you take the time to dial in a specific patch you can get some great sounds out of these things. I still use my Mustang 3 amp in my stereo amp rig using Princeton amp as my core basis with a few modulation, delays and reverbs on one side so quite clean, then put my pedals mainly drives through my other Fender amp, and I love my overall warm full sound. You just gotta work with the gear you have and never expect the presets to be spot on or sound great.

    I bought the amp while my main tube I use with the band was in repair. I really like it. I actually sold a Blues Jr to by it. The fender tone app is really where it shines. Being able to see the amps and pedals you're modeling helped me to know what they were going for. Theres also a manual you can Download from fender that say specifically what amps they based the models on with out the copy right issues. There is a tube bias on most the amp model that does a really good job at dialing in a tube amp model. The biggest benefit I get out if is recording. I don't have enough money to buy all the gear I want so it's nice to have something that can model a Klon. Also prefer recording modulation off this amp opposed to my pedals. For example I use a univibe on my pedal board but the univibe on this amp has exact timing so if you want to match the modulation exactly with the rythm you dont have to screw with the knobs constantly. The biggest down side with this amp is the speaker. I play in lower tunings alot, C and D. If you play that low and pair a high gain amp with a big muff the amp sounds like it's flubbing. It's not a big issue for me though cause I mostly use it for recording or solo stuff that I don't need to play heavy for.

    I have had this amp for about 4 days now and I really like it. I got the 100 watt version. It's great. The amp modeling is not on and the selection is tremendous. It's amazing to change amps, cabs and effects by just touching a button. It sounds plenty rich and full in person. You may need to dial in a certain tone, but everything is tweakable. Don't go by the sound of a UA-cam video. Some of the presets are ridiculous, but to me, EVERY time is in there. The vintage Fender amps in particular are on point and sound really good.

    Video was worth it just for your “surf patch editing lesson”
    Interestingly, I have ordered the 50 watt version for my home 🏠 studio this morning prior to watching this . Also interestingly, the pedal does not come with it. Making the 100 watt version worth the extra 100 quid as it’s 85 quid for the pedal separately, unless I get the four button one, which apparently also works with the GTX models ( why did they choose to call the amp after a motor oil or 70’s Ford sub model 😂😂👍)
    Can’t wait to play with mine, when it comes.
    I own a few really nice amps. But wanted a Fender amp as I sold my Champ 12 a few years ago and wanted to replace it with something an amp I could use for Recording. And decided that it would be the “Only other amp I would need” especially if I wanted a few Fender amps. It does seem to do its own amps well.
    Paid a little over £300 quid. The 100 watt version in the UK is a bit over £400 quid.
    I won’t ever sell my Wem, and will hum and ha about my Marshall, depending upon how well I really get on with the GTX 50.
    Would it really make me buy a particularly Fender valve amp at a later date. Well, my Arthritis may well be the deciding factor there. As cannot carry much weight these days without it setting off a case of carpal tunnel again. Had a complete year of not being able to play guitar at all. So a nice light weight amp, with paired back equipment for gigging will definitely be my future, despite me being a Luddite who believes valve amps are king.

    I just picked the GTX50 with foot switch for $200. Going to be a Christmas present. I had picked up the Katana 100 mk2 for cheap about a month ago. Both amps are awesome. I happen to really love the Fender amps so even though I enjoy the Katana I couldn’t get the GTX out of my head. One thing people should know is how loud even the 50 watt can be. The Katana has the ability to use a .5 watt setting. I sold the Spark to get the GTX50. The guy that sold me the GTX50 said that the high volume and the tinkering was too much for him. He liked the simplicity of the Spark. I don’t really see the much of a difference when using my iPad for either the Mustang or the Spark. Another reviewer chose the Mustang because it can be used to play small gigs and has a better amp speaker. Someone commenting in that video also spoke of the Mustang volume in a bedroom practice setting being too loud. I couldn’t not buy it because I have the Mustang III V2 and I would rather have the ability to connect with my iPad rather than PC with Fender Fuse. Anyway, to each his own. Great amp and great review.

    I realize this review is pretty old now but I love this amp! My first amp was a new Fender LT-25 about a year ago and I own no pedals or effects and don't need them. I just bought this as possibly the last amp I'll ever need as it is good enough for gigging. You didn't get into the Tone software and that is one of the best features for me. On your computer you get a graphic pic of each pedal and amp and you can adjust every pot and switch on each device with your mouse. It's so easy to sit there and tweak each preset and sound until it is just as you like it and then rename and save it. It has bluetooth too so you can run it with your phone or tablet, they thought of everything.

    STL Tonality’s Tonehub or any of the 3 plugin suites of theirs would be a much, much better option for anyone with a laptop or PC setup. Can’t beat the price or the tones in my opinion.

    Fantastic amp, I've got the 50W version and it's much better than my dusty old Peavey tube amp for what I use it for. Got it "used" (practically brand new, film was still on the screen) for around 320$ at GC which was a total steal; only thing that sucks about the 50w is the lack of the foot pedal, which I bought but is exorbitantly overpriced imo. Shit, just the GTX50 and the foot pedal both bought new is the same price as buying the GTX100 which includes the pedal, which is dumb, but oh well, buyer beware I guess

    I'm a beginner and far from an authority on guitar gear. Anyway I've managed to acquire 3 tube amps and 2 solid state amps during the last 2 years, and I play all of them daily. I currently have a Marshall DSL20, a Vox AC10 a Boss Katana 50, and most recently a Mustang GTX50 that I exchanged a Pro Jr for. I love my tube amps but I think that the Mustang GTX is a great amp with endless capabilities. The Katana is good too but the new Mustang blows it out of the water. Sure there have been many crappy solid state and modeling amps during the last 3 decades and the tube amps for sure will sound better when dialed in right, with the right gain, the right tube saturation, and also with added pedals, but the technology has come a long way. There is definitely nostalgia when it comes to the tube amps but 90% of guitar players and 99.9% of the regular listeners in the audience won't be able to tell the difference between a tube amp and a good quality modeling amp such as this one.
    A big shout-out to Ryan! I really enjoy his videos and gear reviews! Cheers!

    Do you think this amp would work well with Universal Audio amp in a box pedals like the Dream 65? Is the amp’s speaker “neutral” enough to work well with the UA speaker/cabinet emulations offered in those pedals? Thanks!

    I feel like you get the best experience with this if you just believe that it's capable of delivering (which it totally is). I think the way to handle this amp is to skip past the patches and go straight into making your own. You can definently make your own great patches on this amp, and the footswitch is great too. For 500$ I do think it's very good, but it's just that the patches make it seem kinda bad lol. Too bad. Great modelling amp though.

    Can anyone say what backing tracks and other audio inputs sound like through this amp?? Understand it’s not an FRFR but some reviewers have said it’s “almost” full range. Also if it’s doing cab sims/IRs surely it has to be wider range than a standard speaker voiced solely for guitar??

    I'm in the process of trying to figure out which combo amp I want. I have a Spark MINI and it's great for noodling around. The portability is great too, but I've recently found a pretty big bug with their higher gain pedals and amps. There's a reverse gate effect when you have a little bit of gain and it gets worse as you add more gain. You can't hear it if you have delay, but it's very obvious if you don't.
    I'm considering either the Line 6 Spider V Mkii 120, BOSS Katana 100 Mkii and Fender GTX100. I know you've played at least the Katana and the GTX. Do you have a preference for either? I've read that the Katana has a more immediate feel to it than the Fender. Have you found this to be the case? Is it noticeable enough to choose the Katana over the Fender? My first amp was the Katana 50 Mkii. I hated it, but a lot of that had to do with the fact that I really didn't know much about amps or how to dial them in or the specific subtleties required to get a great tone out of the Katana.
    Anyhow, what are your thoughts on the two?

  • @MrLegion501st
    @MrLegion501st 2 роки тому

    I really loved this to check how it works or more likely, how it sounds, that just 10 minutes videos just switching rapidly and not checking carefully, as this amp is more complex compared to a Katana that is more straight forward.
    I think I will get a Mustang and a Katana. I like too much how the Mustang sounds with clean tones but not with overdrive or high gain, but the cleans for bluesy tones, rock 'n' roll and country like generes sounds absolutely beautiful to me; on the other side, I don't like Katana's clean tones, but is a huge difference a Katana for high gains with humbuckers is so cool, but I don't like that much high gain on the Mustang. I already seeing other video showing the Katana with a Strat trying to get straty tones from songs actually played on a Strat and not, it doesn't sound near to that tone.
    Like I said, I think I will have both to play at home and be switching depending on my mood. Thank you for this video!

      @Bryan Charles are these signal paths not up to the same speed as the katana, ect? I'm an intermediate as well and looking for my first decent amp but don't know if I should get this or the Katana, or save up the extra bucks and get one of those new Deluxe Reverb Tonemasters. (modeling) Just trying to see what would be most inspiring privately and usable live. I like that this Fender has so many models and effects built in, and accessible through an app not the computer like the Katanas.

    • @UNEAKinfluence
      @UNEAKinfluence 4 роки тому

      @Bryan Charles Wow. Thank you, thank you, and did I say, thank you!? Very useful information for me right now. Especially since you have experience with these amps. So Katana for better tone, Fender for more options. I hadn't even heard of the Blues Cube now I have another one to give an ear to!..and yes I saw intheblues review and he seems to like both for different reasons mostly the ones you've outlined. I'll have to get in store and take a listen if I can I think thats gonna be the best option

    • @UNEAKinfluence
      @UNEAKinfluence 4 роки тому +1

      @Bryan Charles I've considered tubes as well, like the blackstar ht20 mk2 and was weighing that against the blues junior and it seems a definite worthy competitor although I haven't played either just going off of videos I've seen. Ah, so many options! Haha I dig this Fender Gtx lineup because of the effects and pedal built in, and with a LOOPER. Just seems to make more sense to me because of what you get out of the box! Not having to pay a few hundred extra on pedals or an external looper is just great. Tubes are awesome but from what I've read they aren't the most practical, especially now with everything going to digital.

    I've had the 50 and 100 I agree with you if your a beginner or someone who just likes noodling around this Amp is perfect its an amp you can start with and play for 2-3 years and not out grow it as for the difference between the 50 to 100 is foot switch the rest is the same I even though volume wasn't much different I went with the 50 as the keeper as my legs dont work so footswitch wasn't beneficial to me or if you don't have the money for the 100 the 50 will keep you happy till you can spring for the peddle later

    12:30 Dick Dale -Break- Thank you for getting to important features & custom patch examples... I'm seriously considering a Buy on this Amp and no doubt, expect a long learning curve! My KEY reason for choosing GTX 100 over "Katana" or others? Dirt tones or Metal sounds are easy 100+ pedals for that stuff. But the amp to reproduce Fender cleans, is something no other modeling amp does as good as... Fender!

    • @faethe000
      @faethe000 2 роки тому

      I feel the same way. If you want Fender cleans, a Fender amp does it best. I paired this with an HX stomp to get better reverbs and dirty tones. And since the HX stomp also works with every other amp, it's not money wasted.

    Tip to those who have a Mustang. Put a simple eq at front of chain, and kill the 80hz freq., and change the Global EQ off of Flat. These amps are full range to accommodate the Bluetooth capabilities, if it wasn't full range your music that plays through Bluetooth would sound like crap. So you have to adjust for that or your speaker(s) will fart out on most settings at a high volume, same goes for the real high frequencies, electric guitar is not meant to be played through a flat response amp. Acoustic guitar is a different story, but that's cool because this makes a nice acoustic amp also!!

      Volume at 1 or all the way up, same sound with the exception of speaker movement dynamics. It is an advantage of Modelling Solid State amps. The footswitch is included with the GT100 as well which enables the looper.
