steelies without hubcaps, manual windows and locks, no tach, 5 speed, black door handles, and no cassette or CD (VE AND CE it had to be added at the dealer). That's as basic as it gets

Yep! Kinda like our 2000 F150. Except for it's an automatic.

When you think about a basic reliable car what do you think of? for me it is a Toyota corolla, particularly the 1998-2002 corolla which is the 7th generation, which is the best generation of corolla, the 1ZZ-FE engine in these cars was timing chain driven as opposed to the previous generation which was belt driven, and sure these engines were known to burn a bit of oil, but keep an eye on it and top it up when needed and they will run for ever, something the newer generations have not lived up to. Take care of it if you want to, or don't the 1999 corolla does not care, it will be there for you on your good days and bad days, if you have had a bad day and take it out on your 99 corolla it will still love you and still be happy to haul you around for many years to come. These cars are not exciting but they are great, you see them almost every day on the road despite them being over 20 years old why? They are basic cars to get from A to B. They are reliable and will never leave you stranded. Even when they do fail catastrophically it is cheap to fix. They just keep going and doing exactly what they were designed to do and that is be a basic A to B car that is good on gas and is reliable. And they will continue to do that for many years to come. I hate when people hate on old corollas because they are boring, they are a car that does not lie about it's personality. It is a basic corolla, that is all it ever was, all it will ever be and it is not pretending to be something it is not. It is a basic car to get you from one place to another, as long as you realize that the old corollas are just basic cars, you will get along fine, because there is not reason to hate on them because 20 years later they are still doing their job just as good as they did when they were new.

I have a 2001 Toyota Corolla 5 speed manual. People see me drive it and they ask me how much I want for it. Until they realize it is a manual transmission, they change their minds. Seems like everyone likes these cars, but automatic. I would rather drive my Toyota over any luxury or sports car out there. It's fun to drive and reliable.

@@strangeroamer3219 yeah, I wish mine had a stick in it. I used to have a mercury capri with a 5 speed as well as a Honda civic. Sadly I had to get the Corolla I have now in a hurry. Nobody has tried to buy mine. I used to drive a Volvo 244, and people were always trying to buy it.

@Brandon Gant Yes they all consume oil, not terrible though. 1 quart per 1500 miles ish. 99 with same manual 5 speed. Same bad ring design as later models I think.

I do, but I'd rather have an automatic for a daily driver. And I'd rather have stick on a muscle car. Such as a Mustang, Camaro, etc. (If I had a muscle car) Haha

Exactly it would be fun to try and mess with, seeing to it the parts would be cheap because one it wasn't a high end car and two it's a toyota

You can get a cassette with an aux Chord attached to it, or you can just buy a new cheap head unit with an aux jack or Bluetooth capability.
