  • Join Paul Johnston as he reviews the 2001 Suzuki Burgman - a large powerful scooter that will get you around town with the practicality and ease of a regular scooter, but still has the performance with it's 400cc engine to keep up with the traffic when you need it to.

Just bought one, after selling my Honda pan European ST1100 last year after 20 years of ownership due to shoulder problem, weight of the bike etc, I'm impressed with the the whole package, speed, seat height, handling, manouverability, agility, comfort and as an added bonus I can actually plant both feet on the floor and easily pedal backwards th park it up 😉

This is a an early version of the Burgman 400. I have a 2009 version of the 650 Executive. My advice is to forget any bike v scooter thing and judge this machine on its merits. I own a Kawasaki Voyage 1700 as well and I enjoy riding both. One thing is clear from the development of maxi scooters, you don't buy one to get into food delivery. It could certainly do that but it is a large bike for such a purpose. The maxi scooter is meant to be used for touring and getting out on the open roads and back roads. The 400 seems well equipped although I would assume there have been some improvements since 2001. The 650 is a better bike for the open road because it has a more powerful engine and thus a bit more grunt. Scooters have CVT which means twist and go - there is no clutch. The 650 has a manual mode for those who like to be in control and there is also a power button for extra revs when in auto mode. The 400 seems to have a good screen but the 650 has an electrically adjustable one giving better air flow at lower speed whilst keeping the wind off at higher speed. I assume the 400 has ABS as does the 650. I would hope that by 2019 Suzuki have added a few mod cons including traction control and cruise control. Both of these would be great even on the 400. They wold make a long day riding even better. I think the 400 would be a starter bike for someone who wants to get into big scooters and start touring.

Fantastic bikes, top brakes, handle well, clever practical design, 80 mph cruising all day, go a lot quicker than they feel.....this coming from someone who owns 600 and 750 gsx-r!

A great review even after all these years. Scooters are just so practical with their storage space, comfort and economy. Burger 400 is still one of the best.

I never, ever see anyone in my area of the US on a scooter. On average, I see only 5 or 6 motorcycles on my 55 mile daily commute through the ‘burbs. They don’t do public transportation either. Everyone has a car.

They're not your friends if they feel the need to make fun of you for not having a Harley. And if they think you're not being a man, ask them if they're such men why they don't ride their Harleys every single time they go out? Not just on weekends but commuting to work, short trips to the store, etc.

I have an older Burgman 250cc from 2002 - is it possible to turn off the clock completely? I have this feeling it's slowly draining the battery when I'm not riding the scooter since it's turned on at all times.

I've had several 400cc scooters to include the 07 & 09 Burgman 400 and an 07 Yamaha majesty. What I've noticed across the board with all three of them is that although they will get to 70 and sometimes a little over. It's not something you'd want to do for an extended period. I have had the 07 burgman to 78 while passing but it wasn't stable at that speed and wasn't much if any throttle left. The 09 and the majesty aren't any better as far as top end, they all seem to like to hover around the 60MPH range, as for touring I wouldn't say that you could run from say NC to MD at 70 before having problems. The scoots are great around town, but as far as what I've experienced although they do have highway capability I would say that you wouldn't want to go on a major interstate with a 70MPH speed limit for very long

1969jmac sorry but I don't agree , my burg has been used for long distances at 70 plus on the motorway and no problems what so ever .It is reving a little high but the engine is well within its limits at 70 and as for stability problems at 78 I have run it at 95 indicated on the motorway with no problems at all admittedly that is flat out ! but not bad with a high screen and top box. mine has now passed 36k miles and is used everyday come rain or shine .

I just bought one from 2001 here in Spain, but I have to say that there are some differences between my model and this one. I can put 2 big helmets sidewais inside the boot and still have some more space, its like double as this one because I just lift the seat, not the grey part with it. The handbrake is also different on mine, and the holder for the back of the passenger. I really like this machine very much after riding bikes like gs 500, bmw k75, suzuki gsx 600 f. I am getting old I guess.

As soon as I get my income tax refund I’m going to get myself a 650 Burgman. I’ve been watching all kinds of videos to learn about them. I’m 6’2” and weigh 260, that’s why I believe the 650 would be better for me than the 400.

This review has given me food for thought as I'll likely end up with one of about this age. Yes not exactly men and motors I know, kind of depends on how you look at it, but I just can't 'do' cars.

When brought out in the 60's it was Hondas biggest bike thus far, by the time mine was made it was kind of in the shade of the CB750 and 500/4/ But I do prefer singles and twins.

@@alwaysmanandwoman I used to own one! Rickman Polaris fairing and Krauser Star panniers - made it really practical (with good frontal weather protection), and even with all that on board, she could still cruise at 70mph effortlessly. My longest single trip was from Plymouth (UK) to Newcastle - did that in the one day (with breaks of course), and she did it with no problems at all! A bike in the same durability league as their rightly-famous CX500 (the "Courier Special"), also available as a far more potent 650 turbo version - which I STILL see occasionally on the road!

No ha dado un solo fallo aún, aun a pesar de que yo no la mimo sino que abuso bastante de ella y, como sabes, el tiempo aquí es 40 veces peor que en España (soy de Sevilla, pero vivo en Liverpool).
