Two things can’t be overstated- how much I enjoyed this video and how much I love my 2018 Burgman Exec. I’m fully aware of all the ‘baggage’ that goes with riding a scooter (my Ducati-snob brother never misses an opportunity to remind me it’s not a motorcycle). Here in Europe maxiscooters are very much beloved, being used even as tour bikes as well as by local police forces. I have a 125cc maxiscooter myself for my simole running about town. When I was diagnosed with MS I thought bikes would be a thing of the past especially with the mobility issues I have. But with a maxiscooter, I don't need precise feet or to sit in uncomfortable positions, and I still have room for a little shopping under the seat as well which I couldn't with a more traditional style bike.

I wouldn't call it a failed scooter. It sold reasonably well in Europe along Yamaha T-max, Honda Silverwing, KYMCO AK 550, or Aprilia SRV 850. Aprilia actually made a motorcycle version of SRV, called it Mana - which looked like a motorcycle but used a scooter engine and a CVT. Saw them regularly in Paris and London. Sure, 400 cc versions were more popular but flagships usually don't lead the sales charts.

After years of riding large (650 and up) motorcycles, and three Harleys towards the 'end' of my riding career (57 years and counting) I'm now riding a 2011 Burgman 650 Executive. I bought it with under 4k miles this past spring. Yep, they are still out there with low low miles, but they won't last forever. At 75yo I'm not able to 'throw a leg' over a large motorcycle like my last Harley, an Ultra Glide with a backrest (hard to clear that backrest!) so the Burgman works for me.
If you're thinking of getting a maxi-scooter (defined as 400-up CC) try out the other maxis first. You'll learn to appreciate the level of engineering that Suzuki put into this 'scooter' if you do. The BMW 650 scooter is quite good, the Honda SilverWing 600, not bad at all. And Kymco has a 550 that riders go nuts over, but they all pale in comparison to the well-engineered 650 Burgman. And if you're looking at an early model, from 2002-2005, don't be shy about buying one even if it has that notorious 'dieseling' sound. It's a relatively cheap fix for anyone with mechanical skills once you know. It's called the 'Polish bolt". The Burgman 650 is good for about 75k miles give or take before CVT problems creep up, and it isn't a cheap fix even for master mechanics.

The last scooter shown ( 9:04 ) is a Suzuki Burgman street 125. Though it sounds like a younger version in the series, it was designed particularly for Indian market as a pilot experiment to study the market's wide possibilities of touring scooters which India didn't have yet. It's basically Access 125 with a tuned engine. But it gives more power and comfort. I've been using it for 3 years now. Will definitely buy a higher version of the series when they release it in India.

I have had at least 40 motorcycles and my last was a Buell 1125CR (which I still miss).
At the moment I have 2 Burgman 650AN's. The older model and the last model.
It's very efficient, luxurious, reliable and it has loads of storage space.
Also it's fast and a blast to ride while you are well protected from the elements.
Even tough I'm 62 I sometimes get the urge to get something like that Buell again but never do it because i have everything I need and more right here.
Sad to see Suzuki discontinued it.

I had a 650 but not the "Executive" model. I added a burlwood kit and a vented, adjustable height windshield. I also added foot pegs from my Honda Nighthawk so I could stretch out my legs while riding. The upright seated position is only comfortable for so long. I liked the storage under the seat. Enough room for 2 full face helmets. A kid I worked with had a Kawasaki Ninja and was making fun of my "Scooter". We raced from one end of the parking lot to the other, and the scooter left him behind. 🙂 I should have gotten the Burgman 400 because it was lighter and more nimble, but I found the 650 for sale on the side of the road and couldn't pass it up.

I have in front of me a copy of "The Motorcycle" a British magazine dated May 1943. In it there's a detailed technical paper to the Society of Automotive Engineers written by illustrious engineer Edward Turner, of Triumph's widely copied Speed-Twin/Bonneville fame.
He was well known for having his finger on the pulse of the industry and what the public wanted.
In it he predicts and describes what the motorcycle of the future ought to look like and, surprise, surprise, it's a large feet-forward scooter with integrated luggage, weather protection, etc. Much like the 650 Burgman and similar. That was 80 years ago...He even included an artists impression of what it would look like.

My Dad rode a Burgman for about seven years. He put 60 to 70k miles on it and never had any major issues. He was along time BMW rider and did a LOT of touring. As he got older, BMW's got heavier, more complicated, and a lot more expensive. He downgraded to a 650cc twin (I'm blanking on the make and model as it wasn't a major brand) for a bunch of years and ultimately to the Burgman when he was having more and more trouble throwing a leg over a standard motorcycle when it's loaded up for a long trip. So the Burgman was the last bike he ever did any long term touring on. It was a perfect compromise until his riding days were over. I'm very grateful that I never had to fight him on that. He pretty much quit riding on his own as time went by.

When I see the Burgman again for years, all I want to say is: "I love you, dad."
It meant a lot back when we couldn't afford a van, and he drove me and my twin back from school to home. I dubbed it Space Station One and dad just went with it. No way we would miss Home Base when dad came to the rescue on any hot summer days in Maine.
Dad sold it to go for a nice Chevy on my graduation, but my heart still lingered for a Space Station One. I never want to trade my M50 Boulevard for anything but one of Suzuki lineups, and I know which one I'm going to get.

Great video - BMW c650gt is similar - it’s a bike you buy to impress yourself, not to impress others. If you like riding, having a bike that is capable of working in as many circumstances as possible gives you the opportunity to ride more often. The business man analogy is a good one, the under seat storage, weather protection and comfort means you can genuinely commute and travel for work on one. I’ve owned a lot of bikes, all sports bikes and the c650gt is the best bike I ever owned. Don’t knock it until you try it.

@@sk8moto I have the xmax since the Tmax was discontinued and replaced with it. Love it though. I own the NC750x and it was my first non-scooter bike and I like it for travel with it fully decked out with extras like side storage. A good workhorse.
I wonder what I will get next. I like the Honda wings but I forget why I decided not to get one. I know the goldwing is too big.
Too bad Burgman was given up on. It was really about marketing I guess, but maxi scooter models never seem to last long in general. Tmax didnt, Burgman, Xmax took years to get here from Europe, and is the silverwing even well supported? I was sure another model or 2 had died in the last 10 years :(

@@waltermh111 I am a big fan of the Tmax, a friend bought a Xmax, I didn't really like it, and he didn't either, he end up buying a Tmax also. They are two very different scooters. The NC700X is a nice bike, not the most exciting but reliable, my Tmax runs circles around it. I actually prefer the CVT to the DCT. I would like to get the Tenere 700, really like it from a short demo ride.

    • @sk8moto
      @sk8moto 2 роки тому +3

@@waltermh111 I disagreed that the lack of popularity for maxi scooters is simply about marketing, it's a cultural thing. Americans simply doesn't have a scooter culture and look down on scooters. We don't like to commute on 2 wheels, only weekend riding for fun. To Americans, a high $$ premium maxi-scooter is not a status symbol vs something like a HD cruiser or BMW adv bike. Most riders don't even know about these premium maxi scooters have a parallel twin engines that are in the chassis, so the ride is more like a motorcycle and rides much better than tradition scooter design. Maxi-scooters never did well here except the Helix/Reflex/Forza and Burgman 400 (which is still available). Honda already gave up on the Silverwing 600 and put its focus on the Forza 750 and Xadv 750. BMW recently stopped making the C650, just focusing on their C400 with the traditional engine in swingarm setup. Tmax was imported into USA twice but never sold well. Tmax has been the dominating big scooter in the Euro market for over 20 years and has a great reputation over there. Here, most motorcyclists never even heard of it. Kymco and Sym have recently copied the Tmax with the Ak550 and Maxsym TL500. (The BMW C650 sport was a Tmax copy also). Kymco did import the AK550 to the States last year. It looks nice, but not sure how well they are selling, since Kymco doesn't have that good of a reputation in the US.

I think since the marketing wasn't quite right from the manufacturer... this video should be seen by all, and we can start a petition for Suzuki to bring back the Burgman!
Another slight problem is the price. I think it was about 10grand here in the UK, and no matter how good it is... that is a lot of money for a scooter! The smaller 400 is still available though.

I've owned a Burgman 400 and 200. Both were outstanding machines and both had enormous storage (almost as much as the 650) so you hardly needed any top boxes or panniers. But the 200cc Burgman, though only for short legged riders, did 96 miles to the imperial gallon, could easily keep up with UK motorway traffic and had a screen and seat that enabled riding for 5-6 hour stretches with no need to rest. It was that comfortable. Only in the US and the UK is there a prejudice against big scooters. In Europe they are the norm. Great video as usual.
