The fact that this train is shorter than more common European or Japanese models (TGV, ICE, Shinkansen, anyone?) doesn't make it look faster. But the Acela is very slow anyway. I hope that someday the United States will develeop better infrastructure than it has now. I am from the Netherlands myself, and I absolutely love trains. Seeing them arrive on their stations, depart with grace and rush through the countryside at their top speeds is truly amazing to watch. It just shows that trains simply do not belong in museums. They belong on the tracks, where they perform their duties. However, as we all know, the United States has a poorly maintained infrastructure when it comes to their tracks and trains. Amtrak owns only a very small portion of all the track it operates on, meaning the owners of the non-Amtrak rails will naturally lend the priorities to their freight trains. Whenever there is a freight train approaching, Amtrak train operators are told to park their trains in sidings, while the 2-kilometer long freight train passes by at the slowest possible speed. Normally, these non-Amtrak tracks are not powered by overhead electricity either, which means they are forced to utilize diesel engines for their passenger trains on those tracks, just like the freight companies that actually own the track. For this reason, high-speed rail travel across the US, even by diesel trains, is impossible on the track they do not own. The reason why the Acela is so slow on the Amtrak-owned track is because the track isn't upgraded. However, they are working on gradually upgrading the track they do own, which would eventually result in the trains being able to run at their top speeds. Avelia Liberty will have to wait, because upgrading the tracks is the first step to take. Without this crucial step, even the new Avelia Liberty would still only be chugging along at less than 125 miles per hour, just like the Acela Express. They could go faster on European tracks, but they don't, since the track is poorly maintained. How badly I wish the United States would be getting a good network of trains across the entire country... (Sorry if my English was bad) -Jack
Jack DvR we need to straighten the line more, the bends and turns keeps them slow. But since that would mean taking property from people, it would be much more complicated. I wish it was easy to do this, but since amtrak is govt owned, anything for it to upgrade would have to be fought over in the senate
150mph is actually damn impressive for hundreds of year old lines travelling on some of the busiest corridors in the world with mixes of commuter, freight, and Acela, and without their own dedicated right of way. That being said Acela ordered new Alstom Aveila Liberty trains that starting in 2021 will lean into turns and are going to be able to go 220mph on these same old congested lines.
220 mph? That would be 350 on old tracks. I don't have to tell you how hazardous this is, do I? HSR needs a fixed underground made from concrete slaps. It should run on dedicated tracks to avoid collisions. It needs a new type of signalling because older light - based signals are not cutting it for HSR. They need special electric cables and they need more space between the tracks and in tunnels. It would be ludicrous to think that you will be able to ride 220 mph on the same old network.
+Vaas Montenegro The Acela is just as fast as most high speed express trains in Europe, its top speed is 150mph, which is 241kph. Soon the speed limit will be raised to 165mph, or 265kph. Yes there are quite a few trains in Europe and Aisa that are faster, but the majority are the same speed as this. And it isn't really that much slower than the latest and greatest high speed trains that aren't a maglev. I think they travel at about 320kph/198mph. Its only a 35mph difference, and it gets the job done. That's the thing, everyone wants the US to build a "real" high speed train, but what it has does the job fine.
+Vaas Montenegro It still gets the job done. DC to Boston in 7 hour. Beets dealing with road traffic and trying to stay awake for 12 hours behind the wheel.
Impressive shots, Mike! Acela trainsets surely do look and sound amazing. If only the NEC could be improved and new high speed lines built so these monsters could show what they could really do!
Exactly. The top speed is already not bad. Anything above 125 mph is remarkable, not to say the top would increase to 160-165 mph. That's not that significant a difference than 180-200 mph from my opinions, especially given that NEC is literally town after town. The problem is we need to make sure that such high speeds is reached at most of the length. Right now there's only about 30 mi of 150 mph lines in MA/RI, and about the same length in NJ for 160 mph next year. We need literally all 500 miles of track and even some branches (like Springfield, Empire, Keystone and VA ones) to be reaching that standard. That would be impressive and world class.
I was planning on filming at North Elizabeth on the NEC today, which would've been the first time I'd ever seen an Acela in person. Unfortunately, my father and I didn't have time-if we'd gone, we'd have only been able to stay for about 20 minutes. Another day...
With my experiences on fast trains in the UK and France, at first I thought the US-xpress was not going that fast till 406 and 416, yep, that sucker definitely is hammering down in the 140 plus mphs. Mint captures.
To the people saying “oh that’s so slow compared to our European/Asian trains”, it ain’t a competition. And also, Amtrak is America’s most popular passenger railway that was founded by the US government as a for-profit organization and is ran like any other railway except its funded both by the people who ride it and the government. Amtrak has a specifically built route called the Northeast Corridor or NEC, this line is the only line in the USA that was specifically built for passenger rail. Most of Amtrak runs on other railway lines across the transcontinental railroad that was built and finished in the 1860s and by today is majority ran and operated by railway companies that run freight ops like Union Pacific, CSX, Norfolk Southern, BNSF and many more. Freight trains aren’t designed to go fast and the FRA states that freight trains in the USA can only go a max of 70-75 mph. Well if that’s the case, why would a railroad spend money on making it capable of high speed when they’ll never use it nor see profit from it. And I don’t think Amtrak nor the government wants to spend the possible billions or even trillions of dollars is would take to build a high speed electrified railway stretching the 2,700 some odd miles from NYC to LA with connections to multiple other US states. And considering that almost no one would use it except railroad enthusiasts since we have planes, it wouldn’t even be very profitable. Hell it’s amazing the California Zephyr is still around considering it’s tickets are almost level with a plane ticket except it takes 9 times longer (48 hours) stretching from Chicago, Illinois to Emeryville, California.
In India we have only one train which hits 100MPH, Gatiman Express. These are very fast trains. One reason also for our trains being not so fast is because of the number of coaches they pull. They pull around 17-18 coaches on average. And sometimes even 24-25 odd. Here what I can see is the number of coaches are far less. Maybe 7-8 max. Having lesser number of coaches also helps the engine to pull faster. Anyways now in a few years time we will get our first Bullet Train. It would hit 300-320kmph i.e around 190-200MPH. The Logo of which has been approved by the Government 2 days back. Feeling excited and happy about it.
sari bsunt - I do not know which country you belong to, but the truth remains India was always a rich country since ancient times. Had it not been for people of Greek, Iran, British, Dutch, Spanish invading and looting us, we would already have been a developed country and not a developing nation. Still, after all these invasions in a short period of 70 years we have covered such a distance in developing the nation which no other Nation could have fathomed, had they gone through so much plundering and destruction our great Nation has survived. So, rather than mock at us, by commenting as you have, think deeply as to why your country is lagging behind in getting things like Bullet trains etc. You may come to the conclusion that leaders and people of your country is not pushing themselves to achieve what they can achieve. We Indians have been mocked around by the world for too long a time and that's why the 21st Century is showing it our true strength. :)

I thought via was a high speed. Wait wasnt CN testing a high speed train like in tbe 50s or 60s?
I love this video from coasterfan2105 with metra Chicago commuter trains.
Happy 50th birthday to Amtrak!
(Sorry if my English was bad)
-Jack
Jack DvR we need to straighten the line more, the bends and turns keeps them slow. But since that would mean taking property from people, it would be much more complicated. I wish it was easy to do this, but since amtrak is govt owned, anything for it to upgrade would have to be fought over in the senate
lmfao damn. look closely at the guy in the distance on station platform at 2:41, airwave from the train passing blew his hat off.

@JetMechMA una mierda
It would be nice if Amtrak expanded Acela all over the nation🚄
Fantastic job capturing the Acela Express train!
I don't want these trains replaced. They're still new.....
YoImShepard 17 years old = new?
By new i mean young. 17 years is still a young age if you think about it.
dennis trident william I'm 16 years old. You calling me old?
thank you , am in Australia hope to get that side in the next 6 years...
If you traveled in Europe, you would be laughing at this.
That's the thing, everyone wants the US to build a "real" high speed train, but what it has does the job fine.
the title says "America's fastest train" not world's fastest train ._.
+Porsche Carrera GT Haha, exactly!
CoasterFan2105 :3
+Vaas Montenegro It still gets the job done. DC to Boston in 7 hour. Beets dealing with road traffic and trying to stay awake for 12 hours behind the wheel.

Yeah. Hopefully it geta adequate funding.
I love union pacific trains from fast desiel trains thank you!!

It is amazing that they could run in more than 150mph in existing rail. Greeting from China.

Sure is the best birthday! The Acela is expensive.

Lucky you! How was it?
I really enjoy these postwar train videos..
Stunning high speed videos!

I was planning on filming at North Elizabeth on the NEC today, which would've been the first time I'd ever seen an Acela in person. Unfortunately, my father and I didn't have time-if we'd gone, we'd have only been able to stay for about 20 minutes. Another day...

Superb shots !
Can you come to Long Island to film the Long Island railroad, also, the New York and Atlantic railroad for freight
Love the night time shots! These trains remind me a little of the BR class 91 and Mk4 sets, the body profile is quite similar!
What a beautiful Acela is!

Exactly. It never was a competition. It’s definitely an Express, you can just tell.
It’s fast for us
*Me casually putting it on X2 speed*
The whoosh sound as the train passes the camera is the best thing in the world
3:48 sounds like a simplex true alert doing continuous..

System6 Rail Productions yes it does lmao
Kaushik Basu why do you guys who can't afford adequate plumbing get a bullet train and not us?
sari bsunt - I do not know which country you belong to, but the truth remains India was always a rich country since ancient times. :)
The Acela is just fine! It gets the job done! We don't NEED crazy speeds like 200mph!
Hey dude lots of love to American rail fans from India.I am also a rail fan.I want to say that please be safe while the sexy beast 😍😘 on the track bcs of it's high speed it can pull u towards bcs a low pressure system is developed when the train at high speed running out of platform . And also there is a high risk while clicking a camera flash near high tension overhead wires .Bcs some times it can give a spark through the flash and can hit the photographer too. I'm not warning u but be safe bro we want some more vids from u 😎😎🤗😘🇮🇳🇮🇳🇺🇸🇺🇸
